eduKate Sengkang is an education site, but education does not happen in isolation from place. Children walk through the same neighbourhoods, take the same LRT loops, revise in the same libraries, train at the same sports facilities and grow up beside the same river. Sengkang at a Glance

HDB describes Sengkang as a town whose name means “prosperous harbour” in Chinese, reflecting a past of fishing settlements as well as rubber and pepper plantations. Its newer housing and public spaces repeatedly return to nautical and river themes. The result is a town that is intensely modern but still organised around water, movement and neighbourhood identity.
What Is Changing in Sengkang Right Now
- Sengkang West LRT works: the West Loop inner direction via Cheng Lim is closed from 19 April to 18 October 2026 while tracks are connected to the expanded Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot. The outer direction via Renjong continues to operate, with bus alternatives available.
- A much larger LRT depot: LTA is expanding the Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot from 3.5 hectares to 11.1 hectares. The expanded depot is due to support a larger fleet, with completion of the depot works targeted for 2027.
- A future one-stop Sengkang Town Centre hub: URA’s Master Plan 2025 material identifies Sengkang Town Centre as a location under study for an integrated community hub bringing commercial, healthcare, sports and recreation uses together with direct connection to Sengkang MRT.
- Outram Secondary School in Anchorvale: from 2026, Outram Secondary School is operating an Anchorvale Campus at 48 Anchorvale Crescent as part of its transition to Sengkang.
- Ageing-in-place infrastructure: HDB has identified Fernvale Plains for a future Community Care Apartments project, combining senior-friendly homes with community spaces and care support.

Start Here: Understanding Sengkang
Sengkang makes more sense once you stop treating it as one continuous housing estate. The town is a network of neighbourhoods joined by two rail scales: the North East Line connects Sengkang outward to the rest of Singapore, while the LRT loops distribute people around the town itself. Roads, parks, schools, malls and community facilities then reinforce those neighbourhood identities.
The river is equally important. Sengkang Riverside Park, Punggol Reservoir and the floating wetland create a north-south landscape through Anchorvale that works simultaneously as recreation space, water infrastructure, habitat and a classroom for environmental learning. At the other end of daily life, Sengkang MRT, Buangkok MRT, Compass One and Sengkang Grand Mall form two major urban centres for transport and errands.

Sengkang Neighbourhoods
HDB’s town design framework uses Rivervale, Compassvale, Anchorvale and Fernvale as the principal neighbourhood names. Residents also commonly orient themselves through the transport nodes and malls that sit inside or beside these areas. Understanding these names makes property listings, school locations, LRT stations and everyday directions much easier to read.
Compassvale and the Town Centre
Compassvale is closely associated with Sengkang’s central transport core. Sengkang MRT/LRT station, Sengkang Bus Interchange, Compass One and Sengkang Community Club make this the part of town most visitors encounter first. It is the natural interchange point between the North East Line and the LRT loops, and it is where many errands can be completed without travelling farther into the estate.
Rivervale
Rivervale occupies the eastern side of Sengkang and is served by the Sengkang LRT East Loop. Names such as Kangkar, Rumbia and Bakau help residents orient themselves within the neighbourhood. Rivervale Plaza and Rivervale Mall are familiar daily-use centres, while the eastern edge of the town connects toward the Serangoon Reservoir corridor and Punggol.
Anchorvale
Anchorvale is where some of Sengkang’s most recognisable recreational and civic spaces come together. Sengkang Sport Centre, Anchorvale Community Club, Sengkang Riverside Park and the floating wetland form a strong river-and-sport identity. Sengkang General Hospital is also nearby, and the new Outram Secondary School Anchorvale Campus adds another major education anchor to the area.
Fernvale
Fernvale is the north-western neighbourhood, served by the West Loop and centred increasingly on The Seletar Mall, Fernvale Community Club and Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market. It has grown substantially with newer housing and schools, and HDB’s planned Community Care Apartments at Fernvale Plains will add another layer to the neighbourhood’s role across different life stages.
Buangkok and the Southern Sengkang Node
Buangkok is useful to think of as Sengkang’s southern gateway. Buangkok MRT, Buangkok Bus Interchange, Sengkang Grand Mall, the hawker centre, community club, childcare and public spaces are integrated around one node. For households living around Compassvale Bow and the southern part of Sengkang, this has become a second centre of everyday gravity rather than merely a station on the way to Sengkang MRT.

Things to Do in Sengkang
Sengkang is not a conventional tourist district, which is exactly why its best activities feel local. A good day here is often a combination of river walking, cycling, swimming, sport, playground time, food and a stop at one of the neighbourhood malls rather than a queue for a major attraction.
The strongest outdoor route is around Anchorvale. Start around Sengkang Riverside Park, follow the water, cross toward the floating wetland, and connect into the wider park-connector network. PUB’s floating wetland is not only scenic: it is an engineered ecological system that improves water quality while creating habitat for birds and fish, with boardwalks that allow people to experience the wetland closely.

Food and Eating Out
Sengkang’s food map is no longer just a collection of coffee shops and mall food courts. The town now has three major social-enterprise hawker centres distributed across different neighbourhoods: Fernvale Hawker Centre & Market, Buangkok Hawker Centre and Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre. That gives the town a useful food spine from west to south to central-west, alongside established neighbourhood eateries and mall restaurants.
For family meals and errands together, Compass One, The Seletar Mall and Sengkang Grand Mall remain the obvious anchors. For residents, however, the most useful food guide is usually more granular: what is open before school, which stalls work for a quick weekday dinner, where to find supper, and which places are easiest with children or elderly family members.

Shopping, Malls and Daily Errands
Sengkang is unusually legible through its malls. Compass One serves the town-centre population around Sengkang MRT. Sengkang Grand Mall serves Buangkok and the southern part of the town through a genuinely integrated development. The Seletar Mall serves Fernvale and the north-west. Smaller centres such as Rivervale Mall and Rivervale Plaza handle neighbourhood-scale errands.
Sengkang Grand Mall is especially important to the way the town has evolved. The development combines retail, a hawker centre, community club, childcare, residences, public space and Buangkok transport connections. URA describes this type of integrated development as a community intersection: daily services are deliberately stacked and connected so residents can complete multiple tasks in one trip.

Getting Around: MRT, LRT, Bus, Walking and Cycling
Sengkang’s transport system has two scales. The North East Line carries residents outward through Sengkang and Buangkok MRT stations. The LRT then distributes passengers around the four neighbourhoods. HDB’s current town design guide identifies 14 LRT stations on the East and West loops, supported by bus interchanges at Sengkang and Buangkok.
The LRT matters because Sengkang was planned with rail woven into the housing pattern rather than added much later. HDB notes that Sengkang was the first satellite town where major public-transport facilities were developed in tandem with the main public-housing development. The LRT began taking shape while the new town itself was still being built in the late 1990s.
For 2026, one temporary change is particularly important: the Sengkang West LRT inner loop via Cheng Lim is closed through 18 October while depot-connection works are carried out. The West Loop outer direction via Renjong remains available, supplemented by bus options.
Cycling is increasingly useful for short local journeys and recreation. The river corridor around Sengkang Riverside Park links into the broader Park Connector Network and the eastern side of Singapore’s Round Island Route, making Sengkang a convenient launch point for longer rides toward Punggol, Seletar and beyond.

Choosing a home in Sengkang is partly a question of which everyday system you want closest: the town-centre transport hub in Compassvale, the river and sports facilities in Anchorvale, the neighbourhood feel of Rivervale, the newer north-west growth around Fernvale, or the integrated Buangkok node around Sengkang Grand Mall.
That is more useful than treating every Sengkang address as interchangeable. A five-minute walk to an LRT station, direct access to an MRT station, proximity to a primary school, a sheltered route to groceries or the ability to reach the river without crossing major roads can change daily life more than a small difference in straight-line distance.

Schools, Preschools and Education
Sengkang’s school network grew with the new town. Seng Kang Primary School began in 1997 and describes itself as the first school in Sengkang Town. Seng Kang Secondary School followed in 1999 as the first secondary school in the estate. Since then the education landscape has expanded across all four neighbourhoods, with schools including Anchor Green Primary, Nan Chiau Primary, Nan Chiau High, Compassvale Secondary, North Vista Secondary, Sengkang Green Primary and others.
One of the major 2026 changes is Outram Secondary School’s new Anchorvale Campus. The school is operating across Anchorvale and its historic York Hill campus during a transition period, with the Sengkang campus serving new cohorts and adding capacity in the north-east.
For parents, location is only one part of the education problem. The larger question is what a child needs at each stage: foundations in Primary 1 and 2, greater subject complexity in Primary 3 and 4, PSLE preparation in Primary 5 and 6, the Secondary 1 transition, and progressively more specialised work through Secondary 4.

Sengkang has a unusually strong healthcare cluster for a residential town. Sports and Fitness
Sengkang Sport Centre at 57 Anchorvale Road is one of the town’s strongest community anchors. SportSG lists a swimming complex, gym and other facilities at the site, which is co-located with Anchorvale Community Club. The swimming complex includes a sheltered pool and feature-pool attractions, while the wider centre is also associated with hockey and community sport.
For runners and cyclists, the river corridor provides a different kind of sports infrastructure: long, relatively continuous routes that connect green spaces rather than confining exercise to a single facility. That makes Anchorvale particularly useful for families who want both organised sport and informal outdoor activity.

Parks, Nature and the Waterfront
If Punggol is commonly understood as a waterfront town, Sengkang is better understood as a river town. Sengkang Riverside Park is built around the Punggol Reservoir corridor and contains a constructed wetland with aquatic plants that filter rainwater naturally and create habitat. NParks’ trail material also highlights fruit trees and biodiversity through the park.
The Sengkang Floating Wetland extends that story. PUB describes it as a water-quality and habitat project inside Punggol Reservoir, connected by boardwalks to Sengkang Riverside Park, Anchorvale Community Club and Sengkang Sport Centre. It is one of the best examples in the town of infrastructure doing several jobs at once: water management, ecology, education, recreation and connection.

History and Heritage
The modern HDB town can make Sengkang feel new, but the landscape has a much longer story. HDB records fishing villages as well as rubber and pepper plantations in the area. School heritage records also describe pineapple cultivation and the two-river setting between the Serangoon and Punggol rivers.
Kangkar is one of the names that preserves this earlier river economy. National Heritage Board material on north-east Singapore records a fishery at Kangkar that later moved as urban development transformed the area. The name survives today in Sengkang through Kangkar LRT station and other local references.
That continuity is important. Sengkang’s contemporary nautical naming is not decorative alone; it is a planning language that keeps a memory of water and harbour life inside a town built mostly from the 1990s onward.

What Comes Next for Sengkang
Sengkang’s next stage is less about building a new town from nothing and more about strengthening an established one. The Master Plan 2025 direction is toward better integrated everyday amenities, stronger recreation and wellness options, and continued transport improvement.
The most significant long-range proposal is the integrated community hub under study at Sengkang Town Centre. URA’s published concept brings commercial, healthcare, sports and recreation facilities together with Sengkang MRT. Because it remains a planning proposal, the details should be treated as evolving rather than fixed.
Transport capacity is also being strengthened. The expanded Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot and larger two-car LRT fleet are intended to meet growing demand, while the continued development of walking and cycling networks gives residents more options for short local trips.
