Examination Craft | When Learning Has to Perform

Learning and examination performance are related, but they are not the same thing.

A student may understand the subject and still lose marks because the capability cannot be accessed reliably under time pressure. Examination Craft is the layer that handles that conversion.

What Examination Craft does

  • read the actual demand of the question;
  • select the correct knowledge or method;
  • allocate time according to marks and difficulty;
  • express the answer in the form the examination can reward;
  • check high-risk points efficiently;
  • recover when a route fails;
  • continue functioning after an error instead of allowing one question to destabilise the paper.

The handover from learning to performance

Voyage asks: Where is the learner on the journey?

Darwin asks: Why must the learner or method evolve here?

Examination Craft asks: Can the capability now survive the examination environment?

A practical examination loop

Test → classify the lost mark → isolate the cause → repair → targeted retest → recombine → perform again.

This prevents full papers from becoming blind repetition. Each paper should return information that changes the next piece of preparation.

The construction model

A useful way to think about examination readiness is construction: Pillars → Structural Frame → Rooms → Walls and Partitions → Services and Wiring → Finishes → Fit-out → Occupancy → Live Operations → Renovation and Extension.

Late in the examination cycle, there is less time to rebuild the whole structure. The work shifts towards making the existing structure reliable, accessible and usable under load.
