This is a starting model, not an official allocation. If a learner repeatedly loses summary marks but finishes Section A very early, the budget should move. Time should follow evidence, not symmetry.
Listening: do not invent a speed strategy
Paper 3 is delivered through the official listening sequence. The learner cannot freely redistribute the total duration in the way they can within a written paper. Preparation therefore focuses on attention, note discipline, reset between items and not allowing one uncertain answer to contaminate the next audio task.
Oral: use the preparation time deliberately
For G1, G2 and G3 English, the oral paper is approximately 20 minutes per candidate including 10 minutes of preparation. The preparation task differs by level. The learner should use the preparation time to build a small structure, not a memorised speech.
The SEC English stop rule
A written paper is a finite marks system. When a low-value item has stopped producing new evidence, mark it and move. The learner should not spend five minutes rereading one line while a large writing or comprehension section remains unfinished.
How to calibrate a personal English budget
- Sit one fresh paper or representative section without changing the usual pace.
- Record where the learner actually finishes each section.
- Classify time loss: reading, retrieval, planning, writing speed, answer construction or checking.
- Adjust one section by 5–10 minutes.
- Retest on fresh material.
- Keep the change only if total mark conversion improves without creating a new unfinished section.
The G1/G2/G3 distinction matters
SEC does not mean that every subject has three identical papers with different labels. The subject level defines the syllabus and assessment route. Parents should therefore avoid saying “the SEC English paper” as though one format applies to everyone. Use the learner’s actual G1, G2 or G3 syllabus code.
When timing is not the real problem
