Knowing the topic and converting that knowledge into marks are related skills. They are not identical.
A student can understand the concept, explain it accurately and still lose marks when the paper adds wording, time, mixed topics, mark constraints and the need to recover from difficult questions.
The subject supplies the capability. The examination asks the learner to deploy it under conditions.
The question may be misread before the knowledge is used
In English, a student may know the passage but answer a different question from the one asked. In Mathematics, the learner may know the formula but choose it for the wrong relationship. In Science, a memorised concept may be applied without attending to the changed variable in the setup.
The knowledge exists. Interpretation is the weak link.
Execution can fail after the method is correct
Arithmetic slips, incomplete units, imprecise phrasing, missing evidence, omitted steps or an unfinished conclusion can all remove marks after the main idea is understood.
Repeated late-stage errors need a different repair from conceptual weakness.
Time changes decision quality
Under a clock, learners have to decide how long to persist, when to skip, how much working to show and what to check.
A student who performs well untimed but deteriorates under realistic timing may need examination execution rather than another full round of content teaching.
Mixed papers remove helpful cues
Chapter practice tells the learner what family of method is likely to apply. An examination mixes topics and removes that cue.
The student has to recognise the relationship before executing the method.
Recovery matters after one difficult question
A student can know the next five questions and still lose them if one early problem consumes time or confidence.
Examination craft therefore includes recovery: knowing when to leave, reset attention and return later.
What should parents look for?
- Can the child explain the concept outside the paper?
- Are marks lost early in interpretation or late in execution?
- Does untimed performance differ sharply from timed performance?
- Do mixed questions cause more difficulty than chapter practice?
- Does one hard item disrupt the rest of the paper?

Parents can often narrow the problem by locating the stage at which knowledge stopped becoming marks. The purpose is not to diagnose the whole paper at home. It is to avoid reteaching content when the evidence points somewhere else.

The content-versus-deployment comparison
Choose one concept from the paper and ask for a calm explanation or a representative untimed task. If the learner cannot explain or use the concept there, content repair is a plausible first job. If understanding is strong outside the paper but performance degrades only under mixed, timed or unfamiliar conditions, deployment deserves more attention.
Do not use “exam technique” as a catch-all
“Exam technique” is useful only when it names a real operation: question selection, pacing, mark allocation, checking, interpretation or recovery. If the learner cannot explain the underlying concept at all, technique is not the first weak link.
