When the examination becomes the main job, tuition should change the conditions of practice—not suddenly abandon the subject.
The learner still needs knowledge. But the work now has to ask whether that knowledge can be recognised, selected, executed, checked and recovered under realistic paper conditions.
The closer the examination, the more the question shifts from “Can you learn this?” to “Can you deploy it when the paper does not help you?”
Mixed work becomes more important
Chapter practice supplies useful cues. Examination papers remove them. The learner now has to decide which concept or method applies before using it.
Timing becomes part of the capability
Students need to learn how long to persist, when to move on, what deserves checking and how to protect marks from one difficult item consuming the rest of the paper.
Practice papers become measurements, not trophies
The useful cycle is paper → inspect the response trace → repair the highest-impact weakness → retest under comparable conditions.
Simply collecting paper scores can create activity without improving the mechanism that produced them.
The priority list should become shorter
Close to an examination, trying to repair every historical weakness is often unrealistic. The tutor should identify the small number of changes most likely to improve reliable performance while protecting secure areas.
Recovery needs deliberate practice too
A learner should practise what to do after getting stuck: leave a mark, move on, reset attention, return later, or use a checking strategy. Examination performance includes managing imperfect moments.
What should not disappear
Exam preparation should not become blind memorisation of model answers, endless paper volume or tricks detached from subject understanding.
If the foundation is genuinely missing, no amount of examination technique can permanently substitute for it.
An examination-mode switch: what should change, and what should stay?
The move toward examination preparation should follow learner state rather than a calendar alone. The closer the assessment becomes, the more expensive it is to spend time on work that does not improve reliable paper performance—but content that is genuinely missing still has to be taught.
| Current evidence | Likely priority | What tuition should change |
|---|---|---|
| Important concepts are still missing even in calm untimed work | Subject repair remains primary. | Teach the missing capability, then reconnect it quickly to examination-style use. |
| Chapter work is secure but mixed questions are unreliable | Recognition and transfer. | Remove topic cues, mix question families and require the learner to select the route. |
| Untimed work is strong but timed papers deteriorate | Examination execution. | Increase realistic timing, pacing, question-selection and checking practice. |
| One difficult item disrupts several later questions | Recovery. | Practise leaving, resetting attention and returning rather than solving every problem in one uninterrupted route. |
| Most capabilities are stable and errors are now narrow | Protect strengths; target the small expensive failures. | Shorten the priority list rather than reopening the entire syllabus. |
What should stay unchanged
Good examination preparation should preserve the learner’s ability to explain, recognise relationships and reason accurately. The paper mode changes the operating conditions; it should not replace understanding with memorised performance theatre.
A useful weekly receipt
Ask whether the most recent examination-style work revealed a smaller, clearer set of weaknesses than the previous one. If every paper produces a completely new list and none of the old patterns reduce, the programme may be collecting evidence faster than it is converting evidence into repair.
When not to switch fully into paper mode
If the learner cannot yet perform a load-bearing capability outside the paper, repeated full papers may simply rehearse the same failure under pressure. In that case, step out of the paper long enough to repair the dependency, then return to realistic conditions to test whether the repair converts.
The parent decision
The parent does not need to manage examination strategy. The useful question is narrower: is tuition still teaching missing subject capability, or has the main job become reliable deployment under paper conditions? Once that distinction is clear, the deeper Examination Craft system can own the execution details.
What this page does not mean
The “examination becomes the main job” point differs by learner, subject and timing. There is no universal week when every lesson should switch into paper mode.
