The short answer: Sengkang LRT is a neighbourhood distribution system around the central Sengkang MRT interchange. The East Loop serves Compassvale and Rivervale. The West Loop serves Anchorvale and Fernvale. Together with Sengkang station itself, the network has 14 stations.
In 2026 there is one important temporary change: the Sengkang West Inner Loop via Cheng Lim is closed from 19 April to 18 October 2026 while LTA connects new reception tracks to the expanded Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot. The West Outer Loop via Renjong remains in service, supplemented by bus options.

How the East Loop Works
The East Loop is the more compact of the two neighbourhood loops. It leaves Sengkang station and circulates through the eastern housing areas before returning to the interchange. In practical terms, it serves Compassvale and Rivervale addresses and gives residents a short rail connection to the North East Line.
Rumbia is useful for Rivervale Mall, while Kangkar preserves one of the older local place names associated with Sengkang’s pre-new-town river economy. The East Loop is also the simplest way to understand how Sengkang’s transport design follows its neighbourhood geography.
How the West Loop Works
The West Loop is larger and reaches farther into Anchorvale and Fernvale. Farmway and Kupang are useful for the Sengkang Riverside Park corridor. Fernvale station serves The Seletar Mall and the central Fernvale area. The loop then continues through Layar, Tongkang and Renjong before returning to Sengkang.
Because the West Loop covers a larger residential area, direction matters. A trip that is short in one direction can take longer if you ride most of the loop the other way. Checking the current service direction before boarding is therefore useful, especially during the 2026 works.
The 2026 West Inner Loop Closure
LTA announced that the West Inner Loop, defined as the direction from Sengkang toward SW1 Cheng Lim, is closed from 19 April to 18 October 2026. The closure is required to modify track, connect new depot reception tracks and install and test signalling equipment.
During this period, commuters can continue using the West Outer Loop via SW8 Renjong, regular buses and peak-hour shuttle buses. LTA’s live train information page was still showing this planned service adjustment on 24 September 2026.
If you depend on Cheng Lim, Farmway or other West Loop stops for school or work, leave additional time until the works finish and check LTA before travel.
Why the Depot Is Being Expanded
LTA says the Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot is being expanded from 3.5 hectares to 11.1 hectares to support a larger fleet. By the end of February 2026, seven new two-car light rail vehicles were in passenger service, with another 18 to be deployed progressively after the depot expansion is completed. The expanded depot is targeted for completion in 2027.
This matters because the current inconvenience is part of a capacity project. Sengkang and Punggol have grown substantially since the original LRT system was built, and the network now needs more vehicles, workshop space and reception tracks.
Sengkang LRT and the North East Line
Sengkang station is the hinge between neighbourhood travel and island-wide travel. The LRT brings residents from Rivervale, Anchorvale and Fernvale into the central interchange; the North East Line then carries them toward Punggol, Hougang, Serangoon, Dhoby Ghaut, Chinatown and HarbourFront.
Buangkok MRT is separate from the LRT network, which is why households in southern Sengkang may choose to walk or take a bus to Buangkok rather than travel north to Sengkang station first.

- Check whether your destination is on the East or West Loop before boarding.
- On the West Loop, check the current direction because the 2026 closure changes normal movement.
- If travelling to the south of Sengkang, compare the LRT route with a direct bus or Buangkok MRT route.
- For family outings, choose a destination near one station rather than trying to cross the whole town repeatedly.
- Use live LTA information for temporary closures and planned engineering works.
Why Sengkang Has an LRT at All
HDB describes Sengkang as the first satellite town where major public-transport amenities were built in tandem with the main public-housing development. The LRT was developed as housing blocks were going up in the late 1990s.
That history explains the network’s shape. It is not trying to act like another cross-island MRT line. It is a local circulator designed to connect neighbourhoods with the central MRT and bus interchange.
