What is PG2 in Sengkang | Sengkang Education PSLE Foundation Subjects, AL Grades and 2027 Posting Eligibility

Three secondary students learning together in a small-group tuition setting

Can a pupil who takes PSLE Foundation subjects enter a PG2 secondary school in Sengkang? Yes, if the pupil’s official overall PSLE Score qualifies for Posting Group 2. Foundation-level subjects are graded A, B or C, then mapped to equivalent Achievement Levels (ALs) for the four-subject PSLE total: Foundation A maps to AL6, B to AL7 and C to AL8. The final score, not the Foundation label by itself, governs Posting Group eligibility.

For the 2027 Secondary 1 intake, the established score bands are 21–22: choose PG2 or PG3; 23–24: PG2; 25: choose PG1 or PG2, subject to current MOE instructions. A student with Foundation Mathematics A and Foundation Science A can therefore have a PG2-eligible total when combined with the other PSLE subjects. Families should calculate only from the official results, not from school trial papers or private predictions.

For parents in Compassvale, Rivervale, Anchorvale and Fernvale, the practical next step is to check each subject’s reported grade, find the equivalent AL for each Foundation subject, add the four AL values, verify the resulting Posting Group choice, then compare eligible secondary schools on the correct PG2 SchoolFinder entry. PG2 is an admission group; G2 is a subject level. The difference still matters after the pupil is posted.

The mapping is published in MOE’s PSLE scoring guide. It recognises that Foundation and Standard subjects have different curriculum and assessment demands. A Foundation A does not mean Standard AL1. It is mapped to AL6 for the calculation of the overall PSLE Score. The grade descriptions should not be used to claim that two different subject papers had the same questions or difficulty.

How the total PSLE Score is calculated

The overall PSLE Score is the sum of four subject AL scores. For Standard subjects, use the actual AL1–AL8 shown on the result slip. For Foundation subjects, use the mapped values 6, 7 or 8. A smaller sum is a stronger overall score. Higher Mother Tongue Language has separate results and arrangements; it does not become a fifth AL added to this ordinary four-subject sum.

Worked example A: one Foundation subject and PG2 eligibility

PSLE subjectLevel / resultAL used in total
English LanguageStandard AL55
MathematicsFoundation A6
ScienceStandard AL77
Mother TongueStandard AL66
Overall5 + 6 + 7 + 624

This fictional Sengkang pupil’s overall score is 24, which ordinarily places the pupil in PG2. The family should not describe the result as ‘Foundation equals PG1’ or ‘Foundation students cannot enter PG2’. The four-subject score is the relevant admission measure. The pupil’s actual Secondary 1 subject levels must later be confirmed with the receiving school.

Worked example B: two Foundation subjects and an option at score 25

PSLE subjectLevel / resultAL used in total
English LanguageStandard AL77
MathematicsFoundation A6
ScienceFoundation B7
Mother TongueStandard AL55
Overall7 + 6 + 7 + 525

This fictional pupil scores 25. Under the current Full SBB framework, a score of 25 ordinarily provides a choice between PG1 and PG2. It is not a demand that every school offer both groups. The family must select a permitted Posting Group according to MOE’s current S1 application process, then build a six-school list from schools accepting that group.

Worked example C: a strong Foundation result cannot be counted as Standard AL1

Suppose a student earns Foundation Mathematics A, alongside Standard English AL6, Standard Science AL5 and Standard Mother Tongue AL7. The total is 6 + 6 + 5 + 7 = 24. Replacing Foundation Mathematics A with Standard AL1 to produce a fictional score of 19 is incorrect. The mapping reflects assessment differences; there is no shortcut that turns an A printed on a Foundation result into AL1.

Can four Foundation subjects still lead to PG2?

Purely as arithmetic, four Foundation A grades would map to 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24. That number is within the PG2 score band. It illustrates why Foundation subjects should not be mistaken for an automatic PG1 verdict. Whether an individual pupil takes four Foundation subjects and how specific curriculum and admission conditions apply are matters for the Primary school and MOE; the example is not a recommendation to take all subjects at Foundation level.

Foundation provision exists to strengthen fundamentals for pupils who benefit from a different pace and curriculum demand. Parents should work with teachers when making Primary 5 and Primary 6 subject-level choices, rather than optimise the child’s paper combination solely to fit a hypothetical total. Once the PSLE result is confirmed, admissions decisions should follow the official score and eligibility shown.

What does PG2 mean after the child is admitted?

PG2 is Posting Group 2, a Secondary 1 admission grouping. It is different from G2, which names the curriculum and assessment level for an individual secondary subject. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, different subjects may be taught at G1, G2 or G3 according to entry eligibility and later school decisions. The student should not buy a ‘PG2 Science’ book without first checking whether the actual subject is G1, G2 or G3 Science.

A Foundation Mathematics pupil may need explicit support with number relationships, fractions, algebraic symbols and mathematical language when entering secondary school. That does not mean every Foundation Mathematics pupil has the same gaps. Ask the child to explain one actual problem and show the working. The teacher’s assessment of the current task is more informative than a broad admissions label.

What about Standard AL grades and more-demanding subjects?

MOE’s Full SBB arrangements recognise specific subject strengths as well as the overall posting score. A pupil who qualifies for a more demanding level in a particular subject may receive a school offer for that subject, subject to the applicable individual-grade criteria and school arrangements. Do not infer that a Foundation A automatically qualifies for G3. The entry criteria for G3 and the mapping from a Foundation grade answer different questions.

At the start of the school year, keep the receiving school’s subject-level allocation letter and its current booklist. If the school offers a subject at a different G level from the pupil’s usual starting profile, check the deadline for accepting the offer and the effect on textbooks, class movement and workload. Later subject-level changes should be discussed with teachers using sustained evidence, not a parent’s interpretation of the old PSLE grade alone.

Why the same PSLE total can hide different learning profiles

Consider two fictional pupils with score 24. Pupil A has strong reading and needs support with mathematical representations; Pupil B works confidently with numbers but finds long English texts demanding. Their overall admission result is the same, but their teaching needs are different. Under Full SBB, parents should identify the level and learning demand of each subject rather than ask for a single generic ‘PG2 revision plan’.

In English, a diagnostic might test whether the student can select a sentence as evidence for an inference. In Mathematics, it might test whether the child understands what x represents in 3x = 21. In Science, it might test whether the learner can connect an observation to a mechanism. A small set of carefully chosen tasks can establish a better starting point than a large stack of papers not matched to the pupil’s subject levels.

School choice in Sengkang: what the Foundation grade cannot tell you

Sengkang is not one tiny catchment. Families may consider schools in the broader Compassvale, Anchorvale, Rivervale and Fernvale area, plus sensible schools just outside the town. But the right shortlist depends on the actual Posting Group offered by each school, the current MOE score range, the child’s interests, school programmes, and the real morning and post-CCA journey.

A previous year’s school cut-off is historical evidence, not a guarantee for the next cohort. Read the MOE SchoolFinder entry with the correct Posting Group; a PG3 cut-off cannot be copied into a PG2 comparison. The choice of six schools should include a sensible range of previous indicative score outcomes and genuine preference order. Never claim to know the 2027 cut-off before the posting exercise finishes.

A six-step parent worksheet after receiving results

  1. Write the four subjects. Record which were Standard and which were Foundation.
  2. Translate only Foundation grades. Replace Foundation A with 6, B with 7 and C with 8 for the aggregate.
  3. Check the sum. Add the four mapped/Standard AL values and verify against the official overall score.
  4. Read the actual eligibility. Use the official MOE letter and current-year instructions, especially for score 21, 22 or 25.
  5. Choose appropriate schools. Check their individual PG2 availability and published previous score range, then compare fit and travel.
  6. Prepare for the transition. Ask the receiving school about actual subject levels and support, then purchase only the appropriate materials.

A low-pressure first month in secondary school

The family’s work does not end at a school posting. Students need to learn how to read a timetable, find classrooms, check announcements and ask for help. Make one small routine visible at home: the student checks the next day’s lessons, packs the necessary books, and writes down one homework item without relying on a parent to monitor every message. Reduce adult reminders as the routine becomes reliable.

Where Foundation subject learning needs persist, choose one precise target. For instance, ‘explain why 3x = 21 gives x = 7’ is more useful than ‘fix all of Maths this month’. A teaching cycle of attempt, inspect, repair, retry and transfer can reveal progress in one fortnight. This reflects the underlying logic of the immutable Clementi teaching reference without copying an unrelated commercial promise into an independent PG2 admissions guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does Foundation A mean AL1?

No. For the overall PSLE Score and Secondary 1 posting, Foundation A maps to AL6. Foundation B maps to AL7 and Foundation C to AL8.

Can I get PG2 if I take Foundation Mathematics?

Yes, if the sum of the four official mapped/Standard subject ALs qualifies for PG2. The Foundation label alone does not decide the Posting Group.

Is PSLE Score 24 PG2?

Under the established Full SBB score bands, 23–24 is PG2. Confirm the current instructions printed with the child’s actual result.

What about a PSLE Score of 25?

The framework provides a choice between PG1 and PG2 at score 25. This choice applies to school posting eligibility, not to selecting each subject level individually.

Are the raw marks of Foundation and Standard papers directly comparable?

No. Their syllabuses and assessment demand are different. MOE uses the published grade-to-AL mapping to determine the PSLE total for posting.

Will my child be limited to G2 forever because of Foundation subjects?

No. Actual subject-level options under Full SBB are determined by eligibility, school assessment and readiness. A pupil’s original PSLE subject level does not become a permanent identity or promise of a later subject-level change.

Which Sengkang school will accept Foundation pupils?

The useful admissions question is whether the school currently offers places in the pupil’s eligible Posting Group. Check MOE SchoolFinder and the receiving school’s current information. Do not infer admission from proximity or the Foundation label.
