Transport Sengkang | Sengkang Transport Options to Tampines MRT, Our Tampines Hub, Tampines Mall and Century Square by Bus 27 and MRT

There are two practical ways to travel from Sengkang to the Tampines town centre. If you live near Buangkok, Compassvale Road or Compassvale LRT, SBS Transit service 27 goes directly towards Tampines MRT and Century Square. If you begin at Sengkang MRT, take the North East Line to Chinatown and the Downtown Line to Tampines (DT32), with one rail interchange. Another rail route via Serangoon and Paya Lebar is possible but uses two changes.

Tampines is not one building. Tampines MRT serves the East–West Line (EW2) and Downtown Line (DT32), while Tampines Mall, Century Square, Tampines 1 and Our Tampines Hub have different entrances and pedestrian connections. The best bus stop or train exit depends on whether you are shopping, attending an event, visiting a clinic or reaching the community facilities at Our Tampines Hub.

This guide gives the correct 2026 bus-27 stop names, two MRT choices, town-centre exits, a comparison table and return instructions. Departure times and fares are variable, so check the live operator information on the day you travel rather than relying on a fixed promise.

Sengkang to Tampines: quick answers

  • Bus 27 from Compassvale: board on the Buangkok–Compassvale–Punggol Road side travelling towards Changi Airport; alight at Opp Tampines Stn/Int (76149) or Opp Century Sq (76139).
  • Bus 27A: a supplementary limited-route service from Block 203B, Sengkang East Avenue towards Opp Century Square, not a replacement for 27 at every time of day.
  • Direct MRT starting at Sengkang: NEL towards HarbourFront → Chinatown → DTL towards Expo → Tampines DT32.
  • Alternative MRT: NEL to Serangoon → Circle Line to Paya Lebar → EWL towards Pasir Ris → Tampines EW2; two interchanges.
  • Our Tampines Hub: use Tampines DT32 and exits F/G for the precinct, with the exact community venue at 1 Tampines Walk.
  • Tampines Mall and Century Square: the Downtown Line station guide identifies Exit C for the malls, and Exit D also serves the Tampines town centre.
  • Return on bus 27: check the side of Tampines Avenue 4 and board the Hougang-bound service, not the airport-bound service.

How to take bus 27 from the Sengkang corridor

SBS Transit’s official route for service 27 begins at Hougang Central, travels via Buangkok and Compassvale, then uses the TPE into Tampines before continuing to Changi Airport and looping back. It is not a bus that begins at Sengkang Bus Interchange, even though it serves useful Sengkang neighbourhood stops. That difference matters: do not stand at a town-centre interchange berth simply because a guide says ‘27 goes from Sengkang’.

On the outward side, service 27 serves Buangkok Station Exit A (67609), Blk 203B (67261), stops along Compassvale Road including Blk 203 (67209) and Blk 259C (67249), Compassvale Station Exit B (67259) and Blk 298A (65061). These are location references, not recommendations to board at every one; choose the legal, closest stop that serves your direction.

  1. Find the nearest appropriate bus 27 stop along your road, and confirm that the bus is heading towards Tampines and Changi Airport.
  2. Board and monitor stop announcements. The route passes the IKEA Tampines/TPE area and Tampines Avenue 9 before reaching the town centre.
  3. For Tampines MRT and the interchange area, alight at Opp Tampines Stn/Int (76149) on Tampines Avenue 4.
  4. For Century Square, consider the following stop Opp Century Sq (76139), then use the correct crossing.
  5. Cross only at designated pedestrian crossings and follow the mall, DT32 station or Our Tampines Hub signs.
  6. For the trip home, use the operator’s current stop list for the Hougang-bound side of bus 27; on Tampines Avenue 4 the return route lists UOB Tampines Ctr (76131) and Tampines Stn/Int (76141).

Note that the 27 route is a loop: after reaching Tampines it continues towards Changi Airport Terminals 3, 1 and 2 before returning through Tampines. Staying aboard after your shopping stop can carry you to the airport instead of your intended mall. The right service number and direction are only half the answer; the alighting stop matters.

What is bus 27A and should you use it?

SBS Transit lists service 27A as a short-working service from Blk 203B (67261) along the Sengkang/Compassvale corridor towards Opp Century Square (76139). The published service information shows a concentrated morning pattern, rather than a regular all-day service identical to 27. If your app shows 27A, it may be ideal for the Tampines town centre. If you are going to the airport or travelling outside its operating period, check regular service 27 instead.

A short-working service is not a promise of a direct bus from every Sengkang stop. Its starting point, end point and operating hours are limited. Your decision should be based on the actual departure offered at your nearest stop.

One-change MRT option: NEL to Chinatown and DTL to Tampines

  1. At Sengkang MRT (NE16), enter the North East Line platform towards HarbourFront.
  2. Alight at Chinatown (NE4/DT19) and follow the signs to the Downtown Line.
  3. Board the Downtown Line towards Expo and remain on the train until Tampines (DT32).
  4. Choose your Tampines exit for the actual destination: malls, bus interchange, Our Tampines Hub, town-centre offices or another venue.
  5. To return, take the Downtown Line towards Bukit Panjang to Chinatown, then the NEL towards Punggol Coast for Sengkang.

This rail route is attractive because it needs one transfer and begins directly at Sengkang MRT. The Downtown Line travels around the south and east of the island, however, so the one-change route is not automatically the quickest door-to-door option. For some departures, the two-change Serangoon–Paya Lebar rail route or a nearby bus 27 may be more suitable.

Alternative rail route: Serangoon, Paya Lebar and Tampines

Take the NEL from Sengkang towards HarbourFront to Serangoon (NE12/CC13), change to Circle Line towards Paya Lebar, then take the East–West Line at Paya Lebar towards Pasir Ris and alight at Tampines EW2. This requires two MRT interchanges. It can be worth comparing when services are delayed or when a commuter already knows the Circle and East–West Line connections.

The Downtown Line and East–West Line station platforms at Tampines belong to an interchange network but do not share identical exits. When changing lines at Tampines, follow official signs and payment-system instructions. Do not assume an underground entrance beside a mall is the same as the elevated platform entrance.

Tampines MRT: which exit should you use?

SBS Transit’s Downtown Line station guide lists Exit C for Tampines Mall and Century Square. Exit D also serves those destinations, the bus interchange and the East–West Line side. Exits F and G list Our Tampines Hub among nearby destinations. For a traveller needing a street-level lift, the DTL guide lists lifts at Exits D and E, and a lift between concourse and platform, so use signed barrier-free routes rather than assuming the closest stair exit is accessible.

A visitor attending a class at Our Tampines Hub should read the event entrance and floor. Tampines Regional Library, sports facilities, community services and eateries may be distributed through the integrated development. The useful answer is an actual address and room number, not simply ‘the hub’.

Our Tampines Hub: sports, library and community appointments

Our Tampines Hub is at 1 Tampines Walk, Singapore 528523. The People’s Association’s published hub guide shows a pedestrian route from Tampines MRT and bus stops along Tampines Avenue 4 and 5, plus taxi arrival areas. Its address and precinct map are more useful for a first visit than a shopping-centre directory belonging to one of the other malls.

If you are travelling to a swimming facility, library programme, sporting session or community appointment, use the facility’s own opening and registration instructions. An event at Our Tampines Hub may not be open merely because the main development is accessible all day. Facilities have their own operating times and possibly ticketing arrangements.

A family with young children should also choose a sheltered meeting point that all members can identify. If someone arrives at the bus interchange and someone else at the North Arrival Plaza, ‘meet at the hub’ is not precise enough.

Tampines Mall, Century Square and Tampines 1: three names, three meeting places

Tampines Mall is at 4 Tampines Central 5. CapitaLand describes it as part of the Tampines Regional Centre near Tampines MRT and the bus interchange. Century Square and Tampines 1 occupy nearby but distinct sites. The malls are walkable between each other, yet their entrances, lift lobbies and shop floors differ.

For shopping, save the individual store or restaurant, not simply the centre name. A clinic booking in a mall is different from meeting friends at the ground-level main entrance. For a parent managing a stroller or an older relative using a walking aid, a slightly longer accessible path can be better than the shortest steps.

How do fares and travel time compare?

Service 27 uses standard Singapore public-bus fare rules, subject to the chosen fare product and transfers. MRT travel uses distance-based fares and relevant concessions. An ordinary public bus and an MRT trip have different boarding, road-exposure and interchange trade-offs; it is misleading to declare one universal fixed fare or exact journey time for every Sengkang starting point.

LTA’s free morning off-peak rail initiative is relevant to qualifying commuters who tap in at Sengkang or designated northeast LRT/MRT stations before 7:30am or between 9:00am and 9:45am on weekdays excluding public holidays, subject to the scheme’s full conditions. That does not turn bus 27 into a free service or make the entire journey free by default.

Three real Sengkang scenarios

A Compassvale resident shopping at Century Square

They locate a southbound bus 27 stop on the published Compassvale route and alight at Opp Century Square. The journey involves no rail interchange. Before returning, they check the Hougang-bound stop on Tampines Avenue 4; they do not ride through the Changi Airport leg by mistake.

A Sengkang parent visiting Our Tampines Hub with a toddler

The parent compares an accessible MRT trip with the effort of reaching bus 27. If starting from Sengkang MRT, the single-change Chinatown route is easy to describe. At Tampines, they follow the hub signs and choose an accessible entrance. A stroller makes the last-level and lift choice as important as the line map.

A student attending an assessment in Tampines

The student reads the exact building, floor and arrival deadline on the appointment. They choose rail or bus based on that destination, leave a practical buffer, and do not treat a predicted arrival at Tampines MRT as a guarantee they have reached the exam venue. That is how to protect the important part of the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is bus 27 direct from Sengkang to Tampines?

Yes, from its served Buangkok/Compassvale corridor. It does not start at Sengkang Bus Interchange. Check the correct stop and the Changi Airport-bound direction.

Is 27A the same as 27?

No. 27A is a short-working morning service ending at Opp Century Square, not an all-day airport loop.

Can I reach Tampines MRT from Sengkang with one train change?

Yes. NEL to Chinatown, then Downtown Line towards Expo to Tampines DT32. This is one interchange.

Which DTL exit is best for Tampines Mall and Century Square?

SBS Transit lists Exit C for both malls and Exit D as another connection to the town-centre side.

Which DTL exits serve Our Tampines Hub?

Exits F and G are listed in the official station vicinity guide. Follow on-site accessible route signage if lifts are needed.

Should I use bus 27 to go to the airport after shopping?

Service 27 does continue to Changi Airport, but the bus passes different stops in a loop. Always check the direction and terminal order before boarding.
