A Question About Education
I have been thinking about education again.
Which sounds odd.
After all, education is not exactly a mysterious word.

We go to school.
We learn things.
We sit for examinations.
Some of us continue to university.
We acquire knowledge, qualifications and eventually, hopefully, enough ability to make our way through life.
That is education.
Or at least, that is the version I have carried around for most of my life.
Lately, I am not completely satisfied with it.
Not because it is wrong.
Because I think it may be describing what education looks like, rather than why it exists.
And those are slightly different questions.
Looking Back
When I first started teaching, education was much easier to see.
There was a student who did not know something.
I explained it.
We practised.
The student became better at it.
Simple enough.
There is something quite comforting about that model.
TEACHER↓LESSON↓STUDENT↓LEARNING
And much of education can still be understood this way.
But after enough years, little problems start appearing around the edges.
A student can learn without a teacher.
A student can learn from a book.
From a friend.
From a parent.
From making a mistake.
From watching someone else.
From trying something repeatedly.
Today, increasingly, from an AI.
So perhaps education cannot simply be:
someone teaching somebody else.
Then perhaps education is the acquisition of knowledge.
That sounds better.
Except there is another problem.
Having information and being able to use it are not the same thing.
I can give a Primary 1 student a Secondary 4 mathematics textbook.
Technically, the information is now sitting in front of the student.
Very little education has happened.
Something else has to occur.
The Strange Problem of a Textbook
A textbook is a rather peculiar object.
It can contain years, sometimes centuries, of accumulated human thought.
Mathematics.
Science.
Language.
History.
Diagrams.
Methods.
Definitions.
Ideas.
All compressed into pages.
Yet the book does almost nothing by itself.
Put it on a table and leave it there.
Nothing happens.
Someone has to be able to read it.
Then understand it.
Then connect what it says to things already understood.
Then practise.
Then retrieve it later.
Then perhaps use it somewhere the book never demonstrated.
Only then does the information start becoming capability.
That makes me wonder whether we have been concentrating too much on the information itself.
Perhaps education is partly about something much stranger:
developing the human capability to use the information.
Every Child Arrives Late
This inheritance problem has its own article: Every Child Arrives Late. Here, I only need the central idea: every new human enters a world that has already accumulated far more than they personally discovered.
Every child is born very late in human history.
They arrive in a world already filled with things other humans spent centuries figuring out.
Language already exists.
Numbers already exist.
Writing exists.
Medicine exists.
Engineering exists.
Music exists.
Law exists.
Science exists.
Computers exist.
The child arrives knowing almost none of it.
That is quite an extraordinary situation.
Civilisation has accumulated an enormous amount.
The new human has accumulated almost nothing.
And yet, within perhaps twenty years, we somehow expect that person to acquire enough of the accumulated world to function inside it.
That might be one of the most remarkable things education does.
It compresses time.
A Child Does Not Have to Rediscover Mathematics
Imagine if every generation had to begin again.
No multiplication tables.
No geometry.
No scientific method.
No accumulated language.
No written history.
No engineering manuals.
Every child would have to independently rediscover whatever they needed.
Civilisation would barely move.
Instead, we do something very different.
One generation leaves things behind.
Words.
Books.
Methods.
Examples.
Stories.
Tools.
Procedures.
Institutions.
The next generation receives them.
But receiving them is not enough.
They must somehow be made usable again.
Perhaps this is one of education’s deeper jobs.
Not merely:
preserving what humanity knows.
But:
turning what has been preserved back into something a living person can do.
That is quite a different idea.
Information Is Not Capability
This distinction feels increasingly important to me.
A formula can survive for hundreds of years.
But a formula is not a mathematician.
A medical textbook is not a doctor.
A musical score is not a musician.
An engineering drawing is not an engineer.
A dictionary is not a fluent speaker.
Something has to happen between the representation and the person.
Education lives somewhere inside that gap.
INFORMATION↓understanding↓practice↓connection↓judgement↓capability
And perhaps that is why education takes so long.
We are not simply transferring sentences from one place to another.
We are rebuilding structures inside people.
Then Why Do We Have Schools?
This also makes schools easier to think about.
A school may not be education itself.
A school may be one of civilisation’s methods for making education happen reliably.
That distinction matters.
Because once we confuse the institution with the function, strange things happen.
We can begin thinking:
school attendance = education
or:
completing a worksheet = learning
or:
passing an examination = capability.
Sometimes they line up.
Sometimes they do not.
The deeper question remains:
What has become possible in this person that was not possible before?
That seems a much harder question.
But perhaps a more useful one.
And Examinations?
Examinations also look slightly different from here.
They matter.
They create targets.
They force retrieval.
They require students to perform under constraints.
They give us information about what has or has not been learnt.
But perhaps an examination is not the reason education exists.
It is a checkpoint.
One important checkpoint among many.
The larger job is still happening before and after it.
A student learns to read long before an examination asks them to.
And hopefully they continue using that ability long after the paper has been submitted.
So perhaps:
EDUCATION↓CAPABILITY↓EXAMINATION
rather than:
EDUCATION↓EXAMINATION↓END
That small change in direction makes quite a difference.
The Question I Keep Coming Back To
A fuller void test belongs in What If Education Was Removed?. Here, the shorter question is enough: what remains if the structures of education disappear but the need to carry capability forward does not?
Imagine a society that stopped educating its young.
Not just schools.
Everything.
No teaching language.
No passing down methods.
No apprenticeships.
No books being explained.
No skills demonstrated.
No stories handed forward.
No one showing the next person how anything works.
The buildings would remain for a while.
The machines would remain.
The books would remain.
The computers would remain.
But gradually, something else would begin disappearing.
The ability to operate them.
Repair them.
Understand them.
Improve them.
Eventually perhaps even the ability to understand why they were built in the first place.
That thought gives education a very different Reason for Existence.
Perhaps Education Is a Continuity Mechanism
For now, this is the version I find most useful:
Education is one of the ways humans carry usable capability forward.
Not simply information.
Usable capability.
One generation learns something.
It leaves behind representations of what it learnt.
The next generation encounters them.
Education helps that new generation reconstruct enough understanding to use, test, alter and extend them.
Then that generation leaves something forward again.

Perhaps education has always been part of that loop.
We simply became so accustomed to classrooms, timetables and examinations that the larger purpose became harder to see.
Which Leaves Me With a Different Question
I started with:
What is education?
I am beginning to think the more interesting question is:
What has to survive from one generation to the next for the next generation to remain capable?
Information certainly matters.
But information alone may not be enough.
Someone must still be able to understand it.
Use it.
Question it.
Repair it.
And eventually teach or represent it again.
That may be where education sits.
Somewhere between what humanity has already learnt—
and what the next human is still capable of becoming.
And I suspect there is quite a lot more hiding inside that gap.
