I think there is a dangerous moment in tuition.
It happens when the lesson goes well.
The student is answering.
I am explaining.
They are nodding.
A difficult question appears.
We work through it.
Eventually the student says:
“Ohhh.”
Wonderful.
That sound is very satisfying.
As a tutor, it feels like something has happened.
The parent may hear the same thing when the child comes home.
“How was tuition?”
“Good.”
“Understand?”
“Yes.”
Excellent.
Everyone can go to sleep.
Except I am no longer sure we have enough evidence.
Because there is a difference between:
understanding while somebody is helping
and
being able to operate after the help disappears.
And unfortunately, both can look almost identical during a lesson.
I Can Make a Student Look Better Than They Are
That sounds terrible.
But I think every tutor can.
Not deliberately.
Simply by being present.
I know the topic.
I know where the question is going.
I know which word in the question matters.
I know which previous concept the student has forgotten.
I can see when they are about to make the wrong move.
So I do tiny things.
I pause.
I emphasise a word.
I ask:
“Are you sure?”
I point at a line.
I say:
“What did we do in the previous question?”
Sometimes I do not even speak.
Perhaps my face changes slightly.
And the student corrects themselves.
Good.
Except now I have a problem.
Who solved the question?
The student?
Me?
Or some temporary machine created by the two of us sitting together?
That distinction matters enormously.
Because only one of those will enter the examination room.
Tuition Can Create a Very Convincing Illusion
Imagine a student working beside an experienced tutor.
The tutor knows exactly when to intervene.
The student therefore rarely remains lost for long.
Five seconds of confusion.
Small prompt.
Continue.
Another error.
Tiny correction.
Continue.
At the end of ninety minutes, perhaps twenty questions have been completed.
It looks productive.
It may genuinely have been productive.
But the number of completed questions does not tell me how much independent capability was built.
The tutor may have been acting like invisible power steering.
The car moved beautifully.
But we do not yet know what happens when the steering assistance is removed.
This is why I am becoming suspicious of lessons that are too smooth.
Not because struggle is automatically good.
It isn’t.
A child can struggle uselessly for an hour.
But if nothing ever breaks—
if the student never has to orient themselves,
never has to choose a route,
never has to recover,
never has to notice their own error—
then I may be observing my competence more than theirs.
That would be an expensive misunderstanding.
Maybe “Understands” Is Too Large a Word
Parents sometimes ask me:
“Does she understand?”
It sounds like a simple question.
But I am increasingly uncomfortable answering it with:
“Yes.”
Understand what?
Under what conditions?
With how much prompting?
Today?
Tomorrow?
In the same format?
In an unfamiliar problem?
Under time pressure?
After learning three other chapters?
There are many versions of “understand.”
A student may understand my explanation perfectly.
That is something.
They may then reproduce the method immediately.
That is more.
They may return two days later and still perform it.
Better.
They may recognise when the method applies in a different-looking question.
Better again.
They may notice when it does not apply.
Now we are getting somewhere.
They may recover when their first attempt fails.
That is another level entirely.
So perhaps:
“The student understands”
is not really a measurement.
It is a temporary description.
We still need to ask what the understanding can survive.
Learning Should Leave Something Behind
This may be the simplest idea in the article.
A useful lesson should alter what the student can do afterwards.
Not merely while the lesson exists.
Afterwards.
That gives me a much cleaner test.
Before the lesson:
the student cannot reliably do X.
After the lesson:
something should be different.
Maybe they can now begin X.
Maybe they can complete X.
Maybe they make fewer errors in X.
Maybe they need one prompt instead of five.
Maybe they can explain why X works.
Maybe they can recognise X inside an unfamiliar question.
Maybe they can notice when X has gone wrong.
The evidence does not always have to be a higher mark immediately.
Learning is often slower than that.
But there should be some change in capability that reality can detect.
Otherwise I have to remain open to a slightly uncomfortable possibility:
perhaps the lesson felt useful more than it actually was.
This Is Where Homework Becomes Interesting
I have never loved homework simply because it is homework.
The student already has schoolwork.
Sometimes a large amount of it.
Adding twenty more questions does not magically make the education better.
But homework can perform one extremely useful job.
It removes me.
That changes everything.
In tuition, I am nearby.
At home, the student opens the question and there is silence.
No face.
No hint.
No:
“Look carefully at the second line.”
No rescue.
Suddenly we receive new information.
Can the student start?
Can they remember?
Can they choose?
Can they continue?
Where exactly do they stop?
Ah.
Now homework is not merely practice.
It is a sensor.
It tells us what survived the lesson.
That makes me see unfinished homework differently too.
Sometimes an unfinished question is more useful than a beautifully completed page.
Because the point where the student stopped may tell me exactly where independence ended.
That is valuable information.
If we erase that evidence by immediately supplying the answer, we may lose the most useful part.
A Wrong Answer Can Be Better Evidence Than a Correct One
This sounds backwards.
But suppose a student completes a question correctly after three prompts from me.
Correct answer.
Now suppose another student attempts the question alone, chooses a sensible method, performs most of it correctly, then makes one arithmetic error.
Wrong answer.
Who is in the stronger position?
The mark alone may say:
first student: correct.
second student: wrong.
But for teaching, I may prefer the second piece of evidence.
It tells me the machinery is largely present.
There is one repair.
The first student may still be dependent on an external navigator.
That is a much larger problem hidden inside a prettier answer.
So perhaps we should be careful about celebrating correctness too early.
The question is not only:
Was the answer right?
It is also:
What produced the answer?
That may be one of the most useful distinctions a parent can keep.
This Changes What I Want to See During Tuition
If the purpose of tuition is eventually independent capability, then the tutor cannot occupy every second of the lesson.
There have to be spaces where the student owns the problem.
Read it.
Think.
Choose.
Try.
Get something wrong.
Notice—or fail to notice.
Recover—or fail to recover.
Those moments can feel less efficient.
A tutor could have solved the blockage immediately.
But solving the blockage immediately may also destroy the measurement.
Sometimes I need to remain quiet long enough to discover what the student actually has.
That silence is not neglect.
It can be diagnostic space.
This is especially important with three students.
While I work with one, another student may be solving independently.
That sounds like the tutor is doing less.
Perhaps.
But I may be seeing more.
I can observe what remains when I am not standing over the student.
That is much closer to the state we eventually care about.
Parents Can Use This Without Becoming Teachers
I do not think parents need another complicated educational system to run at home.
That would defeat the point.
A parent can ask something much simpler.
Instead of:
“Did you understand tuition?”
try:
“What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?”
The child may not have a perfect answer.
That is fine.
Or after a week:
“Which part can you now do without help?”
That question points toward independence rather than attendance.
And if the answer is:
“I still need the tutor for everything,”
that is useful information too.
It does not automatically mean the tuition is bad.
Some problems take time.
But now we know what to look for.
Over weeks, the amount of external support should change somewhere.
A prompt disappears.
A mistake disappears.
A starting step becomes automatic.
A previously frightening question becomes ordinary.
Something should move.
Perhaps This Is How We Should Measure Tuition
This is difficult because tuition is usually measured using visible things.
Hours.
Worksheets.
Chapters.
Homework.
Test marks.
All useful.
But they are mostly inputs and outputs.
Between them is the thing we actually care about:
capability.
Suppose a student attends twelve lessons.
That tells me twelve lessons happened.
Suppose they finish 300 questions.
That tells me 300 questions were attempted.
Suppose the mark rises from 55 to 68.
That is stronger evidence.
But even then I want to know why.
Was it a familiar paper?
A favourable topic mix?
More marks from one memorised procedure?
Or has the underlying learner genuinely become more capable?
The answer matters because only the last one is likely to travel reliably into the future.
So perhaps the most useful tuition question is not:
How much did we cover?
It is:
What can the student now carry without us?
Reality Has to Be Allowed to Disagree With the Lesson
This is the RFE problem.
I may believe I taught beautifully.
The explanation was elegant.
The examples were excellent.
The student nodded at exactly the right times.
None of that gives me the right to declare success.
Reality has to be allowed back in.
Give the student another question.
Change the wording.
Wait a day.
Remove the prompt.
Put the idea beside another topic.
Add time pressure later.
See what remains.
If the capability disappears immediately, the lesson was not necessarily useless.
Perhaps we installed the first layer.
But we should not pretend the final layer exists.
That honesty helps everyone.
Tutor.
Parent.
Student.
Because now we know what the next lesson is for.
Not:
“Do more.”
But:
strengthen the part that failed to survive.
That is a much smaller and calmer instruction.
The Best Evidence May Be That Nothing Happens
There is a lovely stage in teaching when a formerly difficult thing becomes boring.
The student used to stop.
Now they begin.
They used to ask:
“Is this right?”
Now they continue.
They used to need me to remind them of the first step.
Now I hear nothing.
They used to become upset when the question changed shape.
Now they simply adjust.
No celebration.
No dramatic breakthrough.
Nothing particularly visible happens.
And that may be the evidence.
The tutor has disappeared from that part of the student’s operation.
The machinery has moved inside.
Perhaps that is what successful teaching often looks like at the end.
Not a student who can perform wonderfully while we are beside them.
A student who no longer notices that we are absent.
So After the Next Good Lesson
The student understood.
Good.
The lesson went smoothly.
Good.
The worksheet was completed.
Good.
I would keep all of that.
But I would add one more question.
A small one.
What evidence will remain when the lesson is gone?
Tomorrow will help answer it.
The next unfamiliar question will help answer it.
The next mistake will help answer it.
Silence will help answer it.
And if the evidence is weak, that is not failure.
It is information.
We know where to return.
If the evidence is strong, something important has happened.
A piece of the tutor is no longer required.
And perhaps that is the strange direction good tuition should always be travelling.
Not toward a child who becomes better at receiving lessons.
Toward a child who can increasingly continue—
after the lesson has left the room.
