I think we have accidentally ended up with a cycle.
Not a metaphorical one.
A real one.
We started with tuition.
Then learning.
Then the tutor.
Then construction.
Then ways of studying.
Then examination craft.
Then A1.
Then death.
Then rebirth.
And now the obvious problem is:
What happens after rebirth?
Well.
Life.
Again.
Which means education is not a straight line at all.
It loops.
That suddenly makes the whole thing look less like a ladder and more like the water cycle.
Or a biological cycle.
Or really, any system that has to remain alive over time.
Something accumulates.
Something changes state.
Something is released.
Something returns.
Something begins again.
I Think We Draw Education Wrong
We normally draw education like this:
P1↓P2↓P3↓P4↓P5↓P6↓PSLE↓S1↓S2↓S3↓S4↓O-Level↓NEXT
Very tidy.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure learning actually experiences itself that way.
That is an administrative map.
Years.
Levels.
Examinations.
Certificates.
But inside the learner, something else is happening.
They encounter.
They build.
They practise.
They fail.
They repair.
They stabilise.
They perform.
Something ends.
They inherit what remains.
Then the world changes.
And the cycle begins again.
So perhaps education is closer to:
ENCOUNTER↓BUILD↓STABILISE↓USE↓TEST↓FAIL / SUCCEED↓DECOMPOSE↓KEEP / REPAIR / RETIRE↓REBUILD↓NEW CAPABILITY↓NEW ENVIRONMENT↓ENCOUNTER
Round again.
That feels much more honest.
Water Is Quite a Good Teacher Here
Water does something interesting.
It does not travel from:
Sea → Cloud → Rain → Finished.
Rain is not graduation.
Rain returns somewhere.
Into soil.
Rivers.
Reservoirs.
Plants.
Animals.
Groundwater.
Eventually much of it reaches the sea again.
Then energy acts on it.
And the cycle restarts.
The water may change state.
Its location changes.
Its role changes.
But it remains inside a larger circulation.
Education might work the same way.
Knowledge doesn’t simply enter a child and remain neatly stored.
It moves.
It changes form.
It is represented.
Used.
Forgotten.
Recovered.
Connected.
Compressed.
Expanded.
Transferred.
Sometimes it disappears from conscious access and returns years later because a new context gives it meaning.
Learning is far messier than filling a tank.
It circulates.
Maybe Forgetting Is Part of the Cycle Too
That feels uncomfortable.
Education usually treats forgetting as failure.
And obviously, if every lesson disappears immediately, something has gone wrong.
But complete permanent retention is not how humans work either.
Some things fade.
Some details disappear.
Some knowledge gets compressed into larger structures.
Sometimes we forget the steps because we have automated the process.
Sometimes we retain the principle but lose the examples.
Sometimes something we thought we had forgotten becomes accessible again when the right cue appears.
So perhaps learning contains something analogous to evaporation.
Material disappears from one visible state.
That does not necessarily mean it has ceased to matter.
The question is whether the learner can reconstruct what they need when conditions demand it.
That is much closer to capability.
Life Cycles Are Even More Interesting
A biological life cycle is not simply:
Make one organism bigger forever.
At some point growth changes character.
There are transitions.
Egg.
Larva.
Pupa.
Adult.
Seed.
Plant.
Flower.
Fruit.
Seed again.
The next stage is not always a larger version of the previous stage.
Sometimes the architecture changes.
That is exactly what we discovered when study methods stopped fitting the next stage.
A Primary 3 learner cannot simply become an excellent Secondary 4 learner by becoming:
Primary 3 Student × 4
At some point the way the learner studies, reasons and responds has to change.
The environment changes.
Therefore the organism must adapt.
Which means education has cycles inside cycles.
The Strange Thing Is That Success Can Trigger the Next Problem
The pattern is almost self-renewing.
A learner solves one problem.
Great.
That creates capability.
Capability allows entry into a harder environment.
The harder environment creates a new problem.
The new problem forces further learning.
So:
PROBLEM↓LEARNING↓CAPABILITY↓ACCESS TO HARDER WORLD↓NEW PROBLEM
That’s funny.
Education succeeds by creating the conditions for its next failure.
A Primary 1 child learns addition.
Excellent.
Now we can give them subtraction.
Then multiplication.
Then fractions.
Then algebra.
Every successful construction opens a door into a world where the learner is once again partially incapable.
That sounds almost cruel.
But perhaps that is what growth is.
Competence Keeps Producing New Incompetence
I quite like that sentence.
Not because the learner becomes worse.
Because the horizon moves.
A child who cannot read sees one problem.
Teach them to read and suddenly they can encounter thousands of problems that were previously inaccessible.
Reading solved something.
And created an enormous new world of difficulty.
Mathematics does this constantly.
You learn numbers.
Then operations.
Then fractions.
Then variables.
Then functions.
Every representation gives you access to a larger landscape.
So the cycle is not:
BAD↓GOOD↓DONE
It is:
INCAPABLE↓CAPABLE↓NEW WORLD OPENS↓PARTIALLY INCAPABLE AGAIN↓BUILD↓CAPABLE↓LARGER WORLD
That’s a very different philosophy of education.
Which Means Failure Changes Meaning Too
If this is cyclical, then failure is not always evidence that the whole educational process failed.
Sometimes failure is evidence that the learner has entered a new envelope.
A skateboarder who has mastered balancing eventually tries an ollie.
Suddenly they fail again.
That doesn’t mean balancing was useless.
Balancing is what made the new failure possible.
An advanced Mathematics student can encounter problems that would have been completely unintelligible to their younger self.
They may fail.
But it is a higher-order failure.
The learner has moved into a more demanding part of the landscape.
This matters because otherwise education becomes obsessed with eliminating failure entirely.
Maybe the healthier target is:
Keep producing useful failures at increasingly capable levels.
That sounds strange.
But I think it is right.
The Examination Is Just One Compression Point in the Cycle
This also puts examinations back into proportion.
Before, examinations looked like endpoints.
Then we realised they die.
Then we realised a learner is reborn after them.
Now they look more like compression chambers.
The learner accumulates capability.
The examination places it under pressure.
A result comes out.
That result is highly compressed.
Then the compressed result has to be opened back up.
What happened?
What survived?
What failed?
What needs rebuilding?
Then onward.
So:
LEARNING↓ACCUMULATION↓COMPRESSION↓EXAMINATION↓RESULT↓DECOMPRESSION↓INTERPRETATION↓RECONSTRUCTION↓NEXT LEARNING CYCLE
Now A1 is no longer the end.
It is a signal returned by one turn of the cycle.
The Tutor Is Inside the Cycle Too
This changes the tutor again.
I keep doing this to the poor tutor.
Teacher.
Builder.
Navigator.
Diagnostician.
Transition engineer.
Now the tutor is also maintaining a cycle.
Observe.
Intervene.
Test.
Observe what comes back.
Adjust.
Again.
That sounds less glamorous than “inspire young minds.”
But it might be more useful.
A tutor cannot construct the student once and declare:
Finished.
Human capability is not a completed building.
It changes with use.
It decays.
It strengthens.
It transfers.
It encounters new conditions.
So the tutor is helping the learner maintain circulation.
Maybe Education Fails When the Cycle Stops
This is where the water analogy becomes slightly more serious.
A stagnant pond behaves differently from a flowing system.
Learning can become stagnant too.
A student memorises.
Produces.
Gets the mark.
Then never reconnects the knowledge to anything else.
The information existed.
But did it circulate?
Another student learns something in Science.
Uses the idea in Mathematics.
Sees it in Geography.
Recognises it years later in a news article.
Uses it to make a decision.
Explains it to someone else.
That capability circulated through the person.
Now it is alive in a much more meaningful sense.
Maybe the important distinction is not merely:
Did the student learn it?
But:
Did the capability remain in circulation?
Knowledge Has to Keep Finding New Hosts
That may sound odd.
But a word lives because people keep using it.
A mathematical idea survives because generations keep reconstructing it.
Music survives because someone learns to play it again.
A scientific method survives because someone can still perform it.
Education is therefore not simply an individual process.
It is one of the ways civilisation carries usable capability forward.
The past produces representations.
Books.
Equations.
Stories.
Procedures.
Maps.
Laws.
The present learner reconstructs them into capability.
Then eventually that learner contributes, teaches, uses, modifies or transmits something onwards.
So the cycle gets larger:
WORLD↓EXPERIENCE↓LEARNER↓CAPABILITY↓ACTION↓WORLD CHANGES↓NEW EXPERIENCE↓NEXT LEARNER
Now education is not merely preparing a child for an examination.
It is one of the ways a society keeps capability alive.
Death Is Necessary in a Cycle
This was the part I didn’t expect.
We usually treat educational endings as sad or celebratory.
Graduation.
Last day.
Last paper.
But cycles need endings.
Old stages have to stop claiming time, attention and identity.
Study methods that no longer fit have to be retired.
Old assumptions have to die.
Some identities need to disappear.
“I am bad at Mathematics.”
“I can only learn if someone tells me exactly what to do.”
“I just memorise.”
“I am an A1 student, therefore my current method must always work.”
Those can all become dead weight.
Perhaps education requires repeated small deaths.
Not of the person.
Of obsolete versions of the person.
Then something else becomes possible.
Rebirth Is Not the End Either
Which is funny, because the last article made Rebirth sound almost like the culmination.
It isn’t.
Rebirth lasts about five minutes.
Then the new learner meets the next world.
And immediately the cycle starts again.
That’s the whole point.
A learner isn’t reborn into paradise.
They are reborn into the next problem.
That may actually be the nicest definition of educational progress I have found so far:
Progress is gaining access to better problems.
Not no problems.
Better ones.
Problems the previous learner could not even reach.
So What Is the Cycle of Education?
Maybe this:
WORLD↓ENCOUNTER↓CURIOSITY / NEED / FAILURE↓LEARNING↓CONSTRUCTION↓PRACTICE↓CAPABILITY↓ACTION↓TEST↓RETURN↓SUCCESS / FAILURE↓DECOMPOSITION↓INHERITANCE↓RETIREMENT↓RECOMBINATION↓REBIRTH↓LARGER WORLD↓ENCOUNTER
And round again.
Not a perfect circle.
More like a spiral.
Because ideally we return to something familiar from a different height.
The child meets numbers again.
But now as algebra.
Language again.
But now as argument.
Science again.
But now as systems.
Failure again.
But now with better tools.
The same kinds of problems return in new forms.
And the learner is no longer quite the same person.
Perhaps Education Is a Spiral, Not a Ladder
I think that is where I end up.
A ladder suggests there is a top.
Climb enough steps and education is finished.
A cycle suggests we go nowhere.
Neither feels right.
A spiral does.
We return.
But changed.

Encounter.
Learn.
Build.
Test.
Fail.
Repair.
Succeed.
Release.
Rebuild.
Again.
Each turn hopefully carries more capability than the last.
Until formal education ends.
And then—
the cycle continues anyway.
New job.
New technology.
New relationship.
New responsibility.
New failure.
New skill.
New version of ourselves.
Perhaps school was only the place where we first learned how to run the cycle.
And if that’s true, then the real product of education was never merely knowledge.
It was never merely A1.
It wasn’t even merely the learner we constructed.
Maybe the deepest thing education can build is:
a person capable of continuing the cycle without us.
That would be a rather good place for the Voyage to lead.
