Before we ask how to educate, we should ask why.
Education matters because it enlarges what a person can understand, choose, do, repair and carry forward.
It gives a new human access to knowledge they did not personally discover, then helps them turn that inheritance into judgement and capability. At its best, education does not merely prepare someone to pass a paper. It prepares them to enter a world already in motion, recognise what is happening, contribute responsibly and continue learning after the lesson has ended.
The quick answer
Why education? Because one lifetime is too short to rediscover the accumulated world, information is not the same as capability, freedom requires judgement, society requires people who can understand one another, and civilisation survives only when knowledge can be received, tested, improved and passed forward.
This is a different question
What Is Education? asks what education is. What Is Education’s Reason for Existence? asks why some form of education becomes necessary once human experience accumulates beyond what one person can rediscover.
This article asks something more immediate.
Why is education worth the years, effort, attention, frustration, money, practice and patience we ask of a human being?
That question matters because education can easily become surrounded by its machinery. Timetables, classrooms, homework, examinations, grades, admissions and qualifications are visible. The deeper changes inside a person are harder to see. When the machinery becomes tiring, it is natural to wonder whether the whole enterprise has lost its point.
Sometimes it has lost its point. A worksheet can become activity without learning. A lesson can become explanation without understanding. An examination can become a target so large that it blocks the life it was supposed to prepare. A tuition programme can become more work when the learner actually needed a better diagnosis.
So “Why education?” should not be answered with “because school says so”. It deserves a stronger answer.
Education changes where a person begins
Every child enters the world late. Language is already here. Numbers are already here. Stories, medicines, machines, maps, laws, scientific models, musical forms, institutions and mistakes are already here. The child did not discover them, but will eventually be expected to live among them.
Without education, each person would depend far more heavily on direct experience. Direct experience is powerful, but it is slow. It can also be expensive, dangerous and incomplete. A child does not need to touch every fire to learn that fire can burn. A student does not need to reinvent algebra before using it. A new doctor does not begin by rediscovering anatomy. A society does not ask every generation to design language from the beginning.
Education moves the starting line.
It allows one person to begin with some of the work already completed by other people. That is not laziness. It is one of the ways human beings make a finite lifetime large enough to enter an accumulated civilisation.
The inheritance problem is explored more fully in Every Child Arrives Late. The essential point here is simple: education gives the learner a better starting position, but it must still help them make that inheritance their own.
Education enlarges the possible world
A person can only choose among possibilities they can recognise.
Someone who can read has access to instructions, arguments, contracts, histories, stories and voices beyond the immediate room. Someone who understands number can compare quantities, detect implausible claims, plan resources and see relationships that remain hidden in words alone. Someone who understands science can ask what evidence supports an explanation and what conditions might change the result. Someone who understands history can see that the present did not arrive fully formed.
Education does not guarantee that a person will use these capacities wisely. It does something more modest and more important: it makes more intelligent action possible.
The uneducated mind is not an empty mind. It contains experience, intuition, memory, culture and intelligence. But education can add representations, vocabulary, tested methods, comparison cases and disciplined forms of reasoning. It gives the mind more handles with which to hold the world.
The result is not simply “knowing more”. It is being able to see more of what is already there.
Information is not yet capability
We now live with extraordinary access to information. That makes an old distinction more important, not less.
A formula is not a mathematician. A dictionary is not a fluent speaker. A scientific paper is not scientific judgement. A search result is not understanding. An AI answer is not automatically a good decision.
Something has to happen between the representation and the person.
INHERIT → UNDERSTAND → PRACTISE → RETRIEVE → APPLY → JUDGE → CORRECT → CONTRIBUTE → PASS FORWARD
Education occupies that passage. It helps information become usable under conditions that are not identical to the lesson. It builds the ability to recognise the right idea, select a method, carry it out, inspect the result and revise when the world refuses to cooperate.
This is why good teaching cannot be measured only by how much was explained. The stronger question is: what can the learner now do, understand or repair that was not possible before?
Education creates agency
Agency is the capacity to take part in shaping one’s own action rather than being moved entirely by impulse, habit, authority or circumstance.
Education contributes to agency because choices improve when a person can understand alternatives, estimate consequences, interpret evidence and recognise manipulation. A choice made without access to relevant knowledge may still be sincere, but it is not equally informed.
This does not mean education produces perfect independence. Nobody becomes independent of language, community, institutions or other people. It means a person can participate more consciously in the forces acting upon them.
- They can ask what a claim means.
- They can compare one explanation with another.
- They can notice when evidence is missing.
- They can recognise when they do not yet know enough.
- They can seek help without surrendering all judgement.
- They can change their mind for a reason.
Education does not remove dependence. It can make dependence more visible, more deliberate and less exploitable.
Education teaches us how to be corrected
One of the least glamorous purposes of education is learning how to survive being wrong.
A weak learning system treats an error as a verdict. A stronger one treats it as information. Where did the reasoning turn? Which representation failed? Was the concept missing, the method poorly selected, the execution careless, or the answer never checked?
This matters far beyond school. People who cannot revise in response to evidence become fragile. They must defend every position because correction feels like humiliation. People who have practised correction can separate their dignity from the temporary state of an answer.
That does not make them passive. It makes them harder to deceive and more capable of improving.

Education lets people live together without becoming identical
Human beings do not only need private capability. We also need ways to coordinate with people who know different things, want different things and see the world differently.
Language, shared references, historical knowledge, civic understanding and the ability to interpret another person’s position all help make cooperation possible. Education can widen the circle of people with whom a person is able to think, work and disagree.
The aim is not sameness. A healthy education should not produce identical minds. It should provide enough common ground for difference to become discussable rather than merely hostile.
This is one reason empathy belongs beside critical thinking. Critical thinking without empathy can become clever dismissal. Empathy without critical thinking can become easy persuasion. Education at its best develops the ability to understand another position without being required to surrender judgement.
Education prepares a person for work—but it must not shrink to job training
Work matters. A person needs ways to contribute, support themselves, cooperate with others and carry responsibility. Education can provide knowledge, habits and disciplinary skills that make such work possible.
But a job description is not a complete description of a human life.
Occupations change. Tools change. Institutions change. A person may need to learn a new system, move between roles, care for someone, interpret a contract, make a health decision, understand a public issue, repair a relationship or teach a younger person. Education that produces only a narrow procedure can become obsolete when the procedure changes.
Stronger education builds both competence and adaptability: the ability to learn again without returning entirely to zero.
Education gives examinations their proper size
Examinations are not meaningless. They create constraints, demand retrieval, reveal some weaknesses and provide signals used by schools and institutions. For a student, the result can affect real opportunities.
But an examination is still a measurement event. It is not the whole purpose of education.
A high mark may reflect real capability. It may also hide fragility that appears later. A disappointing mark may reveal a genuine gap. It may also compress many different causes into one number: misunderstanding, poor retrieval, misreading, anxiety, pacing, careless execution or a mismatch between what was learnt and what the paper demanded.

Education should make examination performance more truthful—but examination performance should not be allowed to define the whole person.
Education becomes more important when answers are abundant
It is tempting to think that easy access to search engines and AI reduces the need for education. In one narrow sense, access does reduce the need to memorise every retrievable detail. In the larger sense, it increases the need for judgement.
Someone still has to decide what question to ask. Someone has to notice when the answer addresses the wrong problem. Someone has to distinguish a current source from an obsolete one, evidence from performance, confidence from correctness and explanation from persuasion.
A tool can extend capability. It can also extend confusion.
Education prepares a person to use powerful tools without mistaking access for mastery. It develops the background knowledge, vocabulary, scepticism, ethics and self-correction needed to work with answers that arrive faster than understanding.
Education does not guarantee goodness
An educated person can still be selfish, dishonest, cruel or destructive. Knowledge can enlarge the reach of bad judgement as easily as good judgement. Technical skill without responsibility can make harm more efficient.
So education cannot end with competence.

- Critical Thinking — to test claims, examine reasons and revise when evidence changes.
- Responsibility — to understand that capability creates obligations as well as opportunities.
These values do not guarantee virtue. They give education a direction. The question is not only whether a learner can do something, but whether they can understand the consequences of doing it.
At the scale of a civilisation, education is renewal
Civilisations do not continue merely because their buildings remain standing. They continue because enough people can understand, operate, question, repair and improve the systems inside those buildings.
Roads require engineering knowledge. Courts require legal knowledge and public trust. Medicine requires scientific knowledge, practical judgement and institutions capable of correction. Language requires speakers, readers and writers. Democracy, administration, trade, art, care and community all depend on capabilities carried by living people.
When education works, the next generation does not become a copy of the previous one. It receives enough of the inheritance to inspect it. Some parts are preserved. Some are rejected. Some are repaired. Some are extended into forms the previous generation could not see.
That is why education is both conservative and revolutionary. It conserves accumulated capability, then gives new people the means to change it.
Public institutions already point beyond grades
The broader purpose is not only a private educational philosophy. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights places education within human development, rights and participation. Singapore’s Desired Outcomes of Education are organised as developmental outcomes across stages, while the Singapore Curriculum Philosophy connects education with future-readiness, contribution, community and living life fully. UNESCO’s Reimagining Our Futures Together frames education as a shared social undertaking for just and sustainable futures.
These documents do not settle every philosophical question. They do show that serious public accounts of education already reach beyond marks, admission and employability.
What should good education leave behind?
A good education should leave more than completed content. It should leave a person increasingly able to:
- read and listen for meaning rather than merely receive words;
- represent a problem in more than one way;
- retrieve important knowledge when it is needed;
- apply an idea outside the exact example in which it was taught;
- recognise uncertainty and ask a better question;
- distinguish evidence, inference, opinion and persuasion;
- notice an error and repair the underlying model;
- work with other people without surrendering judgement;
- use tools, including AI, without outsourcing responsibility;
- continue learning when the teacher is no longer present;
- contribute something useful and pass it forward.
No single lesson can produce all of this. Education is cumulative. It is built from thousands of small encounters in which a learner notices, attempts, fails, understands, practises, retrieves and tries again.
What this means for a learner in Sengkang
For a child in Sengkang, education is not an abstract civilisational project every morning. It is a spelling word, a mathematics question, a Science explanation, a composition, a timetable, a friendship, a mistake, a teacher’s comment and an examination that seems much closer than adulthood.
The larger purpose should not make the immediate work disappear. It should help us teach the immediate work properly.
When a student learns to explain why condensation forms, the goal is not only one Science mark. They are learning to connect observation with mechanism. When they revise a paragraph for clarity, they are learning to inspect the relationship between intention and effect. When they solve an unfamiliar mathematics problem, they are learning to move from representation to method under uncertainty.
The small school task is where the larger capability is practised.

Education is not all of these things
- Education is not identical to school. School is one organised method for making education happen at scale.
- Education is not identical to information. Information must become understanding, judgement and capability.
- Education is not identical to examination. Examinations measure selected performance under selected conditions.
- Education is not identical to obedience. A mature education should develop the ability to understand and question responsibly.
- Education is not identical to employment. Work is important, but human responsibility extends beyond an occupation.
- Education is not a guarantee of virtue or success. It enlarges capacity; values and decisions still matter.
- Education is not finished at graduation. A changing world repeatedly exposes the limits of what was learnt earlier.
So—why education?
Because a child should not have to begin from nothing.
Because access to information is not enough.
Because freedom without understanding can be shallow, and capability without responsibility can be dangerous.
Because human beings need to cooperate with people they do not fully agree with.
Because the systems we inherit require living people who can operate, question, repair and improve them.
Because the next generation deserves more than our stored information. It deserves the means to make that information usable, testable and capable of becoming something better.
Education is how a human being becomes able to inherit a world without being trapped by it.
That may be the deepest answer I have for now.
We educate so that what humanity has already learnt can become alive again inside a new person—and so that the new person can eventually add something we did not know how to leave behind.
