What is Education | Every Child Arrives Late

A Question About Inheritance

Every child arrives late.

Not late for school.

Late to humanity.

By the time a child is born, the world has already been running for a very long time.

Language is already here.

Numbers are already here.

Roads, medicine, music, electricity, laws, stories, machines, science, maps, money, agriculture, computers.

The child had nothing to do with any of it.

They simply arrive.

And somehow we expect them to catch up.

That sounds obvious when written down.

But I don’t think I had ever really looked at education this way before.


Imagine arriving now

Suppose you were born today.

You would enter a civilisation containing things that took humans thousands of years to build.

But you would not know what any of them meant.

A traffic light would just be coloured light.

A book would be marks on paper.

Money would be pieces of material or numbers on a screen.

A multiplication sign would mean nothing.

An airport would be an enormous confusing building filled with noise.

Even something as simple as:

2 + 2 = 4

would not be obvious.

Someone has to show you what 2 means.

Then what + means.

Then what = means.

Then why the entire expression is useful.

There is an enormous distance between:

being surrounded by civilisation

and

being able to participate in civilisation.

Education lives somewhere inside that distance.


The world does not restart when a child is born

This may be the strange part.

The child’s development starts at zero-ish.

Civilisation does not.

Civilisation keeps moving.

So at birth there is already a huge gap.

And the catch-up begins.

Not necessarily a race against other children.

A race against accumulated history.

The child has perhaps twenty years to become reasonably functional inside a world that took thousands of years to assemble.

That is absurd when you think about it.

Yet we do it so routinely that it appears ordinary.


A Primary 1 classroom is a time machine

Take a seven-year-old learning multiplication.

The child is not rediscovering multiplication from first principles.

Humanity already did that work.

Instead, something remarkable happens.

Thousands of years of accumulated mathematical development are compressed into a sequence that a child can enter.

Count this.

Group these.

Add repeatedly.

Now multiply.

Later:

fractions.

ratio.

algebra.

functions.

calculus.

The child is moving through an enormously compressed historical landscape.

Not historically, of course.

We don’t make them relive the actual history of mathematics.

We construct a shortcut.

That may be one of education’s greatest inventions:

the child does not have to take the same route humanity took.

We give them a much shorter one.


Imagine the alternative

Suppose we removed that shortcut.

Every generation would have to rediscover everything.

A child wants to build something.

First rediscover geometry.

Then measurement.

Then materials.

Then structural principles.

Then tools.

Then manufacturing.

Then electricity.

Perhaps spend a few centuries getting there.

Obviously impossible.

So civilisation has developed another method.

Instead of requiring each new human to rebuild the entire world, we leave behind compressed routes.

Humanity learns something
simplifies it
represents it
teaches it
new human starts much farther ahead

That is an enormous time advantage.


Education may actually be borrowed time

I like this way of thinking about it.

A student learning something in an hour may be receiving the result of work that originally took humanity decades, centuries or longer.

The student is borrowing the time already spent by everyone before them.

Someone discovered it.

Someone tested it.

Someone improved it.

Someone found a better explanation.

Someone wrote it down.

Someone organised it into a syllabus.

Someone taught it enough times to know where beginners get stuck.

And eventually:

“Turn to page 42.”

Five words.

Behind them may sit centuries.

That is astonishing compression.


Which makes a textbook very strange

We usually see a textbook as information.

Maybe it is more than that.

It is a shortened route through time.

Someone has tried to remove:

  • dead ends,
  • failed experiments,
  • unnecessary repetition,
  • historical accidents,
  • thousands of intermediate steps.

And produce something a new human can traverse.

A good textbook effectively says:

You don’t need to rediscover everything. Start here.

A teacher does something similar.

A teacher says:

Don’t fall into this hole. People have fallen into it before.

Or:

This idea looks difficult from here. Come around this side.

Education is full of these tiny temporal shortcuts.


But there is a problem

The world keeps moving while the child catches up.

That changes everything.

A child born in 1900 had to catch up with one world.

A child born in 2000 inherited a larger one.

A child born now inherits something larger still.

More science.

More technology.

More systems.

More vocabulary.

More digital systems and tools.

More specialisation.

More interfaces between specialised fields.

So perhaps the distance between:

NEW HUMAN

and:

CURRENT CIVILISATION

keeps changing.

And education has to keep finding ways of compressing the journey.

That might explain a lot of what we currently experience as educational pressure.

We keep adding.

Another skill.

Another subject.

Another technology.

Another competency.

Another programme.

Another thing young people supposedly “need for the future.”

But a human childhood has not suddenly become 200 years long.

We are trying to move more civilisation through roughly the same human developmental window.

That is a real constraint.


Maybe this is why education keeps compressing

First we teach an idea slowly.

Eventually we create terminology.

Then notation.

Then formulae.

Then diagrams.

Then standard methods.

Then calculators.

Then software.

Increasingly, AI.

Every stage can shorten some part of the route.

What once took an expert hours may become a button.

What once required a library search may become a few seconds.

What once required years of accumulated memory may become externally available on demand.

And that raises a difficult question:

If machines can carry more of the accumulated world for us, what exactly must the child still carry?

I don’t think we know the complete answer yet.

Memorising everything cannot be the answer.

Outsourcing everything cannot be the answer either.

Somewhere in between lies the capability required to navigate, judge, reconstruct and use what civilisation has made available.


Every child arrives late — but we want them to leave early

Perhaps this is the lovely contradiction inside education.

The child begins behind.

But eventually we hope they don’t merely catch up.

We hope they move ahead.

At some point, the learner becomes a contributor.

The student who inherited mathematics becomes the engineer who extends it.

The child who learnt language becomes the writer who changes it.

The student who learnt medicine becomes the doctor who discovers something new.

Education has succeeded particularly well when the future stops merely receiving the past and begins adding to it.


So what is the Reason for Existence?

Perhaps education exists partly because of one unavoidable problem:

Every new human arrives after civilisation has already accumulated far more than that human could independently rediscover.

Education provides a compressed route into that inheritance.

It helps a new person catch up sufficiently to participate.

And, if things go well, eventually contribute something worth handing to whoever arrives late next.

That gives us a very simple loop:

THE CHILD ARRIVES LATE
inherits a world they do not yet understand
EDUCATION
reconstructs enough of that world
CAPABILITY
the person acts, changes, discovers
leaves something behind
ANOTHER CHILD ARRIVES LATE

And around we go.

Perhaps that is one reason education feels so permanent.

The problem never disappears.

No matter how advanced civilisation becomes, the next baby still arrives knowing none of it.

That might be education’s oldest problem.

And perhaps its most beautiful one.

The strange question is:

If every child arrives late, what would a child who arrived early look like?

That question marks the boundary of this article. From here, the inquiry shifts from the inheritance problem to the origin question: what has to be true before something like education needs to exist?

Imagine a Child Arriving Early

There is another way to test the thought.

If every child arrives late, imagine the opposite.

Imagine a child arriving early.

What child would that be?

Not a child born earlier in the morning.

Earlier than civilisation.

Earlier than schools.

Earlier than textbooks.

Earlier than mathematics lessons, libraries, examinations and universities.

Take almost everything away.

No classroom.

No curriculum.

No written language.

No internet.

No encyclopedia.

No accumulated scientific literature.

No educational system waiting with:

“Welcome. Here is what humanity knows so far.”

What happens to education then?

That question interests me because perhaps it lets us photograph education before it became the thing we now recognise as education.


The child before the school

Imagine, only as a thought experiment, a child entering a very early human world.

There is no Primary 1.

There is no timetable.

There may not even be writing.

But an older human knows something.

Where water can be found.

What is dangerous.

What can be eaten.

How to make something.

How to recognise a sound.

How to behave around other people.

How to use a tool.

And the child does not know it.

There.

That tiny difference may be enough.

does not

We have not built a school yet.

But the Reason for Existence of education may already have appeared.

Because now there is a choice.

The child can rediscover everything independently.

Or something already learnt can be carried across.


Perhaps no child really arrives early

And this is where the thought experiment becomes slightly strange.

Even that very early child is still late.

Late to the experience of the people who came before.

If an adult has already discovered:

that plant makes you ill,

the child can either learn from the adult—

or conduct the experiment again personally.

The second method could be rather expensive.

So one human says, in whatever form was available:

Don’t eat that.

A tiny piece of accumulated history just moved into another human.

That might be education in almost its smallest visible form.

Not schooling.

Not curriculum.

Not even necessarily language as we know it.

Just:

EXPERIENCE
retained
represented somehow
received by another human
changes future behaviour

That is already something.


So who is the truly early child?

Perhaps the only child who could genuinely arrive early would have to arrive before there was anything useful to inherit.

No prior experience.

No accumulated solution.

No established route.

No one who had already encountered the problem.

Such a child would not be entering civilisation.

They would be helping to create its beginning.

Everything would have to be discovered against reality.

And then something very important happens.

The moment that discovery is successfully passed to another person:

DISCOVERY
ANOTHER HUMAN

we have changed the problem.

The second person no longer starts where the first person started.

They start slightly farther forward.

That may be one of the smallest possible beginnings of education.


One person discovers. The next person inherits.

Imagine:

Person A spends ten years learning something.

Person B receives enough of it in ten minutes to avoid repeating the ten years.

That is already extraordinary.

The numbers are only illustrative.

The mechanism is the interesting part.

Something happened to time.

The second human borrowed part of the first human’s past.

That might be education before we gave it buildings.


And then the stack begins

One generation passes something forward.

The next generation does not merely receive it.

They begin from it.

Then perhaps they discover something else.

discovers 2
GENERATION C
inherits 1 + 2
discovers 3
GENERATION D
...

Now the child starts arriving later and later.

Not chronologically.

Informationally.

The inheritance becomes larger.

Eventually there is so much accumulated material that informal transmission becomes difficult.

Perhaps then we need specialists.

Teachers.

Writing.

Books.

Schools.

Curricula.

Libraries.

Universities.

Examinations.

None of those has to be the origin of education.

They may be later structures built because the original problem became larger.


That changes the way I see a school

A school might be a very late-stage answer to a very old problem.

The original problem may have been tiny:

How can the next human avoid starting again from zero?

Then civilisation accumulated.

And accumulated.

And accumulated.

Until:

"Don't eat that plant."

eventually became something like:

YEARS OF
structured learning and education

That is quite a journey.

The visible educational system became enormously complicated.

But perhaps somewhere inside it, the original reason for education is still there.


Take the Photograph Before the System Existed

This is why I like imagining the child arriving early.

It removes almost everything we currently associate with education.

Remove the school.

Remove the teacher as a profession.

Remove MOE.

Remove examinations.

Remove grades.

Remove textbooks.

Remove tuition.

Remove universities.

Remove even writing if necessary.

What refuses to disappear?

This:

One human has acquired something from reality that another human does not yet possess, and there is an advantage if that capability can cross between them.

That may be the origin pin.

Everything else can grow outward from there.


And now return to the child arriving today

The difference is scale.

Our imaginary early child may have inherited:

fire
tools
food
danger
language
social behaviour

A child arriving today encounters:

language
mathematics
science
history
medicine
engineering
law
economics
technology
computing
institutions
culture
global systems
and much more

Same underlying problem.

Enormously different load.

Which gives Every Child Arrives Late another meaning.

Children did not suddenly become worse at catching up.

There is simply much more past waiting when they arrive.


Perhaps that is the beginning of the education problem

The first useful discovery creates an advantage.

The first successful transmission preserves that advantage.

The next discovery adds to it.

Then another.

Then another.

Eventually:

Accumulated human capability ≫ what one new human can independently rediscover.

And once that inequality becomes large enough, some form of education is no longer merely useful.

It becomes structurally necessary.

Because without transmission, accumulation repeatedly collapses back toward rediscovery.


What the Inheritance Problem Reveals

We can now ask education before looking at education:

What problem would cause something like education to need to appear?

Perhaps:

A new human begins with less accumulated experience than the humans and civilisation already around them.

And the solution begins:

Carry some of what has already been learnt across.

Everything after that—stories, apprenticeship, writing, teachers, schools, books, curricula, universities, recordings, digital systems—may be increasingly sophisticated answers to the same expanding problem.

Which leads to a rather lovely conclusion.

The first child to arrive truly early would have almost nothing to learn from civilisation.

But the moment that child discovered something worth passing on—

the next child would already be late.

And education would have a Reason for Existence.
