I have been thinking about something that happens almost every day when I teach.
Every student seems to carry a different problem.
One is fast, but careless.
One understands today and somehow loses it next week.
One takes much longer to form the idea.
One reads well but cannot translate the words into Mathematics.
Another can calculate beautifully but struggles to explain what they know.
Sometimes I look at three students sitting in front of me and wonder:
How can three children sitting through the same lesson have three completely different problems?
And perhaps I have been looking at that the wrong way.
Maybe the problems are not interruptions to the lesson.
Maybe the problems are the lesson.
The Problem Is Always Hanging Over Us
As a tutor, there is always somewhere I am supposed to go.
There is a syllabus.
A chapter.
A test coming.
An examination.
Something the student needs to complete.
So when I discover a problem underneath the lesson, there is an awkward feeling.
We were supposed to be doing algebra.
Now I discover fractions are unstable.
We were supposed to be practising Science.
Now I realise the student cannot quite explain cause and effect.
We were supposed to be preparing comprehension.
Now vocabulary is blocking the passage.
There is an overhang.
The lesson we planned is still sitting above us.
We cannot pretend it disappeared.
But the student cannot simply jump over what is missing either.
That is the strange tension in teaching.

What do we do?
We Cannot Stop The Whole Education Every Time We Find A Problem
At first, the logical answer seems to be:
Stop.
Fix everything underneath.
Then continue.
Sometimes that is necessary.
Some weaknesses are simply too important to ignore.
But I have started wondering whether education can really work that neatly.
Because students always have something.
Nobody arrives perfectly complete.
There will always be:
a weak foundation,
an unstable skill,
something forgotten,
something misunderstood,
something still developing.
If teaching stops every time we encounter imperfection, perhaps we never move at all.
So maybe the better question is not:
How do I remove every weakness before continuing?
It is:
How do I keep this student moving while using the weakness itself to make them stronger?
That feels very different.
A Problem Changes The Route
Imagine we are walking somewhere.
The road ahead is damaged.
We could stand there staring at it.
We could complain that the road should never have been damaged.
We could spend the rest of the afternoon discussing whose fault it was.
But eventually, if we still want to arrive somewhere, we have to move.
Perhaps around.
Perhaps over.
Perhaps more slowly.
Perhaps by another route.
And while doing that, we learn something.
How to recognise danger.
How to choose another path.
How to recover.
How to continue when the obvious route disappears.
Maybe students need to learn this too.
Because the world is not going to provide them with perfectly paved roads forever.
Perhaps The Weakness Is Teaching Something Bigger
Suppose a child finds word problems difficult.
I can think:
This is preventing us from doing Mathematics.
But perhaps the difficulty itself gives us the real lesson.
How do you respond when you do not immediately understand the question?
Do you panic?
Guess?
Give up?
Or can you slow down?
Find what you know.
Draw something.
Separate the information.
Try another representation.
Test an idea.
Return.
Now we are teaching Mathematics.
But perhaps we are also teaching something larger:
what to do when the route is unclear.
That capability may eventually be worth more than this particular question.
Without Problems, What Actually Gets Stronger?
This is the part I keep coming back to.
We naturally want learning to go smoothly.
Correct answer.
Correct answer.
Correct answer.
Good lesson.
But if everything is already easy, what is changing?
Perhaps the student is practising something they already know.
Useful.
But growth often appears at the place where something stops working.
The difficult question exposes the edge.
The mistake reveals the weak connection.
The hesitation shows us where knowledge stops being stable.
Without that moment, we may never have known where the edge was.
So perhaps:
PROBLEM↓EDGE BECOMES VISIBLE↓STUDENT HAS TO ADAPT↓NEW CAPABILITY FORMS
The problem is not pleasant.
But it creates the possibility of becoming more capable.
Maybe We Should Not Remove Difficulty Too Quickly
Tutors like helping.
I certainly do.
A student struggles.
I can see the answer.
I know exactly what to say.
It is very tempting to rescue them immediately.
But perhaps sometimes the rescue removes the lesson.
The student needs a moment to meet the problem.
Not forever.
Not until frustration takes over.
But long enough to ask:
What can I do?
Perhaps:
What do I already know?
What can I try?
Which part is actually confusing me?
Can I represent it differently?
If I supply every next step, the student gets through the question.
But I may have done the navigating.
The problem disappeared.
The learner did not necessarily become stronger.
We Need To Divert, Not Carry
I think this is an important distinction.
When a learner meets a weakness, I do not always want to carry them past it.
I want to help them find a route.
Perhaps the student’s strength is visual.
Use a diagram.
Perhaps they are good verbally.
Talk it through.
Perhaps they understand concrete examples.
Start there.
Perhaps numbers make sense before words do.
Use the numbers to reconstruct the language.
We move through what works.
Then we approach what does not.
STRENGTH↓MOVEMENT↓CONNECTION↓APPROACH WEAKNESS↓REPAIR↓RETURN TO MAIN ROUTE
That is not avoiding the weakness.
It is teaching the student how to get around an obstacle without surrendering to it.
And That Skill Can Become Part Of The Student
This may be where the lesson becomes much larger.
At first, the tutor does the diversion.
I say:
Let’s draw it.
Or:
Let’s simplify the question.
Or:
Tell me what you know first.
But perhaps after enough repetitions, the student starts doing it themselves.
They see difficulty and think:
I don’t understand this yet.
Then:
Let me draw it.
Or:
Let me break it apart.
Or:
Let me find the part I do understand.
Now something important has changed.
The student did not merely learn how to solve one difficult problem.
They learned how to behave when they meet difficulty.
That is a much more transferable capability.
The Strong Student Has Problems Too
This is easy to forget.
A student doing tremendously well still needs problems.
Perhaps their problem is that everything has become too predictable.
They can execute.
Fine.
Then give them something that does not immediately reveal the method.
Now they have to choose.
Generalise.
Explain.
Find another route.
Defend an answer.
Their problem is different.
But without that problem, they may simply continue performing what is already easy.
The challenge reveals their next edge.
Again:
the problem becomes the lesson.
The Fluctuating Student Has Another Lesson
The student who gets it today and loses it tomorrow teaches me something different.
Perhaps their lesson is not understanding.
Perhaps it is stability.
Can you retrieve this later?
Can you use it when the question changes?
Can you catch your own mistake?
Can you recognise when you are uncertain?
Their difficulty tells us what needs strengthening.
So we should not simply say:
You already learned this.
Perhaps the learner understood it.
But the capability has not yet survived enough variation.
That is the lesson now.
The Student Who Takes Longer Has Another Route Again
And then there is the learner who needs more time.
Perhaps their lesson is patience.
But not only patience.
Maybe they need to learn that taking longer does not mean the route is closed.
Try.
Fail.
Change representation.
Try again.
Connect one small part.
Return tomorrow.
Something that takes another learner ten minutes may take this learner three lessons.
That does not make the three lessons empty.
Perhaps those three lessons contain another education entirely:
difficult does not mean impossible.
That is worth building too.
Maybe Strength Is Built From Repeated Recovery
I used to think strength meant knowing more.
I still think knowledge matters enormously.
But perhaps educational strength also comes from something else.
Repeated recovery.
You meet something you cannot do.
You investigate.
You adjust.
You eventually manage it.
Then another problem appears.
This time you know:
I have been stuck before.
I know how to begin.
That changes the learner.
PROBLEM↓STRUGGLE↓ADAPT↓RECOVER↓MEMORY OF RECOVERY↓GREATER RESILIENCE AT NEXT PROBLEM
Perhaps that is one of the ways confidence should actually be built.
Not by repeatedly telling children:
You can do it.
But by giving them evidence:
You encountered something difficult, changed your approach, and eventually found a route.
The Problem Should Not Become An Identity
There is a danger here too.
If I keep saying:
You are weak at English.
You are bad at fractions.
You are careless.
then the problem becomes attached to the child.
I would rather say:
We have a reading problem here.
This representation is not stable yet.
Your checking loop is not working reliably.
Now the problem is something we can examine.
It is outside enough to be worked on.
The student is not the pothole.
There is simply a pothole on this part of the road.
That seems psychologically and educationally healthier.
Sometimes The Lesson Plan Needs To Lose
This is hard for teachers.
We prepare.
We know what we wanted to accomplish.
Then five minutes into the lesson, a student’s answer reveals something much more important.
Now I have a choice.
Protect my lesson.
Or teach the student.
Perhaps the planned worksheet has to wait.
The problem that appeared may be more educationally valuable than everything I intended to cover.
That is not always easy.
Especially with examinations approaching.
There is still the overhang.
But perhaps teaching means constantly negotiating between:
WHAT THE SYLLABUS NEEDSandWHAT THE LEARNER JUST REVEALED
We cannot ignore either.
This Is Why I Need More Than One Tool
The problem appears.
Now what?
If my only answer is:
More explanation.
I am limited.
Sometimes the student needs:
a different example,
a diagram,
a question,
a simpler problem,
a harder problem,
more time,
less help,
a return to an earlier concept,
an analogy,
a conversation,
practice,
or simply the opportunity to try again.
The problem tells me which tool might be useful.
Perhaps that is what diagnosis actually means.
Not labelling the child.
Choosing the next useful move.
Teaching Is Perhaps A Series Of Detours
The more I think about it, the less teaching looks like a straight line.
We imagine:
P1↓P2↓P3↓P4↓P5↓P6
But perhaps the actual learner travels like this:
forward↓stuck↙back↓repair↗forward→sideways↓connect↗forward again
Messier.
But perhaps more realistic.
The important thing is not that the learner never leaves the straight road.
It is that they become increasingly capable of finding their way back.
The Problem Can Become The Curriculum For A Moment
I think this may be the sentence I was looking for.
The moment we see the problem, that problem becomes the curriculum for a moment.
Not forever.
The syllabus does not disappear.
The examination does not disappear.
But right now, the most important educational object may be the thing that just failed.
Why did it fail?
What can we use?
How do we route around it?
How do we repair it?
Can the student recognise this type of failure next time?
Then we return.
The detour itself becomes part of the Voyage.
Perhaps This Is What I Really Want Students To Learn
Obviously I want them to learn English.
Mathematics.
Science.
I want them to perform well.
Examinations matter.
But underneath that, perhaps I want something else to accumulate.
When the student eventually leaves tuition, I cannot follow them through every future problem.
There will be university.
Work.
Relationships.
Money.
Technology.
Mistakes.
Things neither they nor I know yet.
There will be potholes.
So perhaps part of education is teaching:
A problem is not only something that stops you.
Sometimes it tells you what you need to learn next.
That is quite a different relationship with difficulty.
Coming Back To My Three Students
I look at the room again.
One flies.
One fluctuates.
One needs longer.
Perhaps I should not ask:
How do I make all three move identically?
Maybe that was never the right problem.
Instead:
What problem has appeared for each one?
What does that problem reveal?
Which strength can carry them forward?
What route can we build?
What repair needs to happen?
What can the student learn about handling the difficulty itself?
And then:
keep moving.
Because problems will not disappear when school ends.
If anything, they become less tidy.
No chapter title.
No worked example.
No answer key.
Perhaps the deepest preparation we can give a child is not a life without potholes.
It is the ability to encounter one and think:
Something here isn’t working.
Let me understand it.
Let me find another route.
Let me repair what I can.
Then let me continue.
Maybe that is not the interruption to education.
Maybe that is education.
