Sometimes the most obvious things are the easiest things to forget.

An engineer engineers.

A doctor heals.

A teacher teaches.

It sounds almost silly when I write it down.

Of course a teacher teaches.

What else would we be doing?

But the longer I teach, the more I wonder whether we sometimes become so occupied with everything surrounding education that we quietly forget the main job.

We mark.

We prepare worksheets.

We complete chapters.

We analyse examination papers.

We give corrections.

We assign more practice.

We prepare students for tests.

We track scores.

We tell them where they went wrong.

All of these things can be useful.

But none of them automatically means:

teaching happened.

And that distinction is beginning to bother me.


The Exam Script Is Visible

A student brings me an examination paper.

63 marks.

Good.

At least now I have something concrete.

Question 3.

Wrong.

Question 7.

Careless.

Question 12.

Misunderstood.

Question 18.

Could not complete.

I can see the output.

Perhaps I can even see exactly why the answer is wrong.

The student divided when they should have multiplied.

They misread the word.

They gave an effect when the Science question asked for a cause.

They used the wrong tense.

They forgot a step.

That part can be relatively easy.

The mistake is sitting there in ink.

Visible.

But then comes the harder question.

How did this mistake come to exist?

That is much less visible.


The Mistake Did Not Begin On The Examination Paper

This seems obvious too.

But I think we often behave as though the examination created the problem.

It did not.

The examination revealed it.

The wrong answer may have taken two minutes to write.

But the weakness underneath it may have been developing for two years.

Perhaps longer.

So when I look at:

WRONG ANSWER

I should probably be asking:

Where did this begin?

Not merely:

How do I correct this answer?

Those are very different jobs.


The Visible Error Is Only The End Of The Story

Suppose a Mathematics student gets a percentage problem wrong.

I can show them the correct method.

Easy.

They copy it.

Then:

Do another one.

They get it right.

Wonderful.

Patch complete.

Maybe.

But perhaps the original failure chain looked like this:

weak part-whole understanding
fraction relationship never stabilised
decimal conversion learned procedurally
percentage treated as another procedure
word problem changes surface
student cannot reconstruct relationship
wrong method chosen
wrong answer

The exam only showed me the last line.

If I repair only the last line, I may simply be painting over the crack.

The crack remains underneath.


Where Was The Break?

This is the question I think teaching has to keep asking.

Where was the break?

Not:

Which question did the student get wrong?

But:

At what point in the learning did the route become weak?

Perhaps learning something has many stages.

Not literally twenty identical stages for every child, but imagine the chain becoming increasingly detailed.

Maybe something like:

1. Encounter
2. Notice
3. Attend
4. Decode
5. Understand the representation
6. Connect to prior knowledge
7. Form an initial model
8. Try
9. Make an error
10. Receive correction
11. Reconstruct
12. Practise
13. Retrieve
14. Repeat later
15. Vary the question
16. Select independently
17. Transfer
18. Execute under pressure
19. Check
20. Maintain

Now imagine the student fails at Stage 18.

Examination pressure.

But perhaps the weakness began at Stage 6.

The new idea never connected properly to what was already known.

Or Stage 10.

The correction was received but never reconstructed.

Or Stage 14.

The learner could do it that afternoon, but retrieval was never revisited.

Or Stage 16.

The learner knows the method but cannot decide when to use it.

Same final wrong answer.

Completely different educational history.

That is the hard part.


The Teacher Has To Work Backwards From The Evidence

Perhaps this is one of our jobs.

The examination gives us:

OUTPUT

Teaching has to infer:

PROCESS

The student says:

I was careless.

Maybe.

But “careless” is sometimes a convenient word covering many different mechanisms.

Did they rush?

Did they fail to read?

Did they not know what to check?

Was too much attention consumed elsewhere?

Was the method unstable?

Did they assume the question was familiar?

Did they lose track halfway through?

Calling all of this careless may tell us almost nothing.

The visible mistake is information.

But it still has to be interpreted.


This Is Where Teaching Becomes Strange

The thing I am trying to change exists somewhere I cannot directly see.

I can see the child.

I can hear the answer.

I can read the script.

I can watch the working.

But I cannot directly see:

understanding.

Retrieval.

Connections.

Misconceptions.

Confidence.

Mental representations.

The moment a concept becomes stable.

The exact point where a wrong rule was installed.

All of that is hidden.

So perhaps a large part of teaching is:

trying to make the invisible visible.


We Need Return Signals

This connects to something I wrote earlier about students speaking.

Ask.

Probe.

Change the question.

Listen.

The student’s output gives me a window.

Not a perfect one.

But something.

I ask:

Why did you do this?

The student says:

Because bigger numbers mean divide.

Interesting.

Now something invisible just became visible.

There is a rule in there.

A wrong one.

Excellent.

Now I can teach.

Before that sentence, I only had a wrong answer.

After that sentence, I have a possible weak link.

That is much more useful.


But Sometimes We Forget To Teach

This is the uncomfortable part.

A student makes a mistake.

We correct it.

Then say:

Do it again.

They make another mistake.

Again.

Another.

More practice.

This can absolutely help.

Practice matters.

Repetition matters.

Retrieval matters.

The learner may gradually patch the behaviour.

But I think there is a danger.

Are we teaching, or are we waiting for practice to teach the student for us?

Those are not always the same thing.


Practice Is Not Teaching

Practice is part of learning.

A very important part.

But practice assumes something exists to practise.

If the representation underneath is wrong, repeated practice can stabilise the wrong thing.

If the student has no idea why a method works, twenty repetitions may create a procedure.

That may be useful.

But perhaps the concept is still missing.

If the student has misread the relationship entirely, telling them:

Try another ten.

may simply create ten more failures.

So perhaps:

TEACHING
creates or repairs the structure
PRACTICE
strengthens the structure
STUDYING
helps the learner retrieve, organise and maintain it
LEARNING
is the change that survives inside the learner

They interact.

But they are not interchangeable.


We Can Confuse Patching With Learning

This happens a lot before examinations.

Student gets Question 5 wrong.

Show the correction.

Do Question 5 again.

Correct now.

Good.

Student gets Question 8 wrong.

Show correction.

Try again.

Correct.

Marks improve.

Excellent.

That patching process has value.

Especially close to an examination.

But perhaps we should ask:

What was actually repaired?

Did the student understand the concept?

Did they memorise a local pattern?

Did they learn to recognise that exact question type?

Can the solution travel?

Will it survive next month?

The patch may be enough for the immediate job.

But if we confuse a successful patch with deep learning, the weakness can reappear later.


Studying Has A Different Job Too

Students sometimes say:

I studied for five hours.

That tells me something.

But not enough.

What happened during those five hours?

Read notes?

Copied notes?

Watched videos?

Did questions?

Retrieved from memory?

Compared mistakes?

Reconstructed ideas?

Practised under time?

Five hours is time.

It is not yet a learning description.

The same is true for teaching.

I taught this for two lessons.

Again:

what changed?

The clock does not answer that.


Maybe Our Jobs Are Different Parts Of The Same Chain

I have been thinking about it this way.

The teacher has a job.

The student has a job.

Practice has a job.

Assessment has a job.

They are not supposed to substitute for one another.

TEACHER
makes structure visible
builds connections
diagnoses breaks
chooses representations
STUDENT
attends
thinks
constructs
attempts
explains
PRACTICE
stabilises
retrieves
varies
automates
ASSESSMENT
reveals what survives
under changed conditions
TEACHER
reads the return
and teaches again

That feels more complete.


The Examination Is Not The Teacher

This may be obvious, but sometimes we use examinations as though they will somehow generate learning.

Give more tests.

More timed papers.

More corrections.

Eventually the student will improve.

Sometimes they do.

Because testing creates retrieval and reveals errors.

But an assessment is primarily telling us something.

It is a probe.

If the same weakness keeps returning, the paper is no longer telling us:

Do more papers.

It may be telling us:

Teach something.

That is our job.


The Worksheet Is Not The Teacher Either

Same problem.

A worksheet is a tool.

It can provide:

practice,

variation,

evidence,

repetition.

But the worksheet cannot always see why Question 4 went wrong.

The student may do another worksheet.

And another.

The weakness remains hidden.

The teacher’s advantage is that we can ask:

Stop.

Show me what you thought.

Why that step?

What does this mean?

Can you draw it?

What happens if I remove this number?

Now we are inspecting the machinery.

That is teaching.


Perhaps We Sometimes Outsource Too Much To The Student

This is another thought I am uncomfortable with.

We say:

Go home and practise.

Revise more.

Study harder.

Do corrections.

All reasonable instructions.

But sometimes the student does not yet know what they are supposed to learn from the correction.

They know the answer was wrong.

They know the correct answer.

The gap between the two remains mysterious.

And we tell them to repeat.

Perhaps we are asking the learner to diagnose a system they do not yet understand.

That may work for a mature student.

But perhaps another student needs us to make the break visible first.


A Teacher Should Be Able To Say More Than “Wrong”

Wrong is only the beginning.

If I say:

Wrong. Try again.

I have returned the problem to the student.

Sometimes that is exactly right.

They made a simple execution error and should catch it.

But if they repeatedly fail, I need to change jobs.

Now I am not merely marking.

I need to ask:

What does this error tell me?

That is where teaching starts becoming diagnostic.


The Weak Link May Be Far Away From The Visible Failure

Suppose the student cannot write a good Science explanation.

The visible correction may be:

Use the correct keyword.

But perhaps the actual chain is:

observed phenomenon
poor mental model
causal relationship unclear
language becomes vague
keyword omitted

Then teaching the keyword may improve the answer without repairing the explanation.

Again, useful patch.

But perhaps incomplete learning.

Or Mathematics:

word problem
language misunderstood
wrong relationship represented
calculation perfectly executed
wrong answer

The child may have excellent calculation.

More arithmetic practice would solve nothing.

We have to locate the break.


This Is Why The Stages Matter

I keep imagining the learning process as a long chain because it prevents me from jumping straight from:

wrong answer

to:

more practice.

Maybe the failure happened during:

first encounter,

attention,

interpretation,

connection,

representation,

retrieval,

selection,

execution,

checking,

maintenance.

I need to know which.

Not perfectly.

Teaching will always involve uncertainty.

But better than assuming every mistake belongs to the same stage.


Sometimes The Problem Was Installed By Us

This is perhaps the hardest possibility.

Maybe the student learned the wrong thing because of how we taught it.

A shortcut was introduced too early.

A rule was oversimplified.

An example accidentally became the definition.

We rewarded speed before understanding.

We supplied too much scaffolding.

We corrected the answer without correcting the model.

The student’s error may be carrying a trace of an earlier lesson.

Possibly mine.

That is why teaching requires humility.

The learner’s mistake is not always evidence about the learner alone.

It can be evidence about the teaching too.


The Break Can Happen After Good Teaching

And sometimes nobody did anything wrong.

The student understood.

Practised.

Performed well.

Then months passed.

Retrieval weakened.

Another concept interfered.

The environment changed.

Capability decayed.

Learning is dynamic.

So “I already taught this” is not a complete argument.

Perhaps I did.

Perhaps it genuinely worked.

But the current student state is what matters now.

Again:

what is here today?


Knowing Our Job Means Looking Past The Paper

The exam script matters.

Marks matter.

Corrections matter.

But the script is the surface.

If my job is teaching, I need to keep trying to see beneath it.

VISIBLE
63 marks
wrong answer
blank response
careless step
----------------
INVISIBLE
missing connection?
unstable retrieval?
wrong representation?
misconception?
language failure?
overload?
poor checking?
transfer failure?

Somewhere between those two layers is the teaching problem.


And Then We Have To Build

Diagnosis by itself is not enough either.

It is easy to become fascinated by the problem.

We can analyse.

Label.

Discuss.

But at some point:

teach.

Find a representation.

Build the missing link.

Let the student attempt.

Listen.

Correct.

Change the conditions.

Return later.

See what survived.

The purpose of diagnosis is movement.

Not description.


Perhaps Teaching Is A Reconstruction Job

A student gives me the end product.

Wrong answer.

I work backwards.

What sequence of thinking could have produced this?

Where did their path diverge from a useful one?

Then I try to reconstruct the missing route.

OUTPUT
TRACE BACK
FIND BREAK
REBUILD
STUDENT TRAVELS ROUTE
REMOVE SUPPORT
RETEST

That feels much closer to what I think teaching actually is.


The Student Has To Own The Reconstruction

But even then, I cannot do all the work.

If I reconstruct everything while the student watches, the understanding may remain inside me.

So eventually:

Explain it back.

Show me another way.

Do the next one without me.

What would happen if I changed this?

The learner has to run the route.

Otherwise I have repaired my model of their problem.

Not necessarily their capability.


The Teacher Teaches

I keep returning to the simplicity of the phrase.

A doctor does not merely point at the scan and say:

There is the problem.

The diagnosis matters because something follows.

An engineer does not simply observe:

The bridge is weak there.

Something has to be designed, reinforced, changed.

Likewise, perhaps the teacher should not stop at:

You got this wrong.

Our job begins there.

Why?

Where?

What is missing?

What representation would make this visible?

What does the learner need to do next?

Did the repair work?

That is teaching.


Maybe We Need To Remember Our Jobs More Often

Parents have a job.

Schools have a job.

Examinations have a job.

Students have a job.

Tutors have a job.

Sometimes these boundaries become blurred.

The student is told to fix something they cannot diagnose.

The examination is expected to create learning.

The worksheet is expected to teach.

The tutor becomes a marker.

The teacher becomes a scheduler.

Everyone is busy.

But the weak link remains.

So perhaps once in a while I need to stop and ask myself:

What is my job in this moment?

If the student needs practice:

give practice.

If the student needs independence:

step away.

If the student needs correction:

correct.

But if the student does not understand:

teach.


The Break Is The Lesson

This connects to the idea I have been circling around in these reflections.

The moment a problem becomes visible, it changes the lesson.

We were teaching Chapter 6.

Fine.

But now we have discovered a break at Stage 8 of the student’s learning.

For a moment, that break becomes the lesson.

Not because the syllabus disappears.

But because nothing useful happens if we keep moving while pretending the bridge is intact.

Find it.

Make it visible.

Repair it.

Then continue.


Coming Back To The Exam Script

The student puts the paper on the table.

  1. 63.

I can circle the mistakes.

That is easy.

I can show the right answers.

Still relatively easy.

But perhaps my real work begins with the question:

What had to happen inside this learner for this particular mistake to appear here?

I may not know immediately.

So I probe.

Listen.

Test.

Go backwards.

Change the question.

Find the first place where the structure becomes unstable.

Then:

teach there.

Maybe that is the simplest reminder.

An engineer engineers.

A doctor heals.

And a teacher?

A teacher takes something invisible inside another person, finds enough evidence to understand where the connection broke, and tries to make that structure visible enough for the learner to rebuild it.

Then we step back.

And see whether it holds.

That is our job.
