There is something slightly strange about teaching three students at the same time.
I can give what appears to be the same lesson.
Same topic.
Same explanation.
Same worksheet.
Same ninety minutes.
And three completely different things can happen.
One student flies.
They understand quickly, connect the idea to something they already know, complete the questions, and are ready for something harder.
The second student seems to understand too.
Then makes mistakes.
Then gets it.
Then loses it again.
Good today.
Weak next week.
Strong on one question.
Uncertain on another.
And the third student needs much more time.
More examples.
More repetition.
Perhaps several lessons before the idea becomes stable.
Same lesson.
Three students.
Three outcomes.
That is odd.
And I think it tells us something important about education.
Perhaps There Was Never Really One Lesson
From the tutor’s side, it looks like one lesson.
I stood at the same whiteboard.
I explained the same concept.
I used the same words.
But teaching is only one side of the event.
There is also the learner receiving it.
So perhaps what actually happened was:
ONE EXPLANATION ↓STUDENT A ↓connects rapidlyONE EXPLANATION ↓STUDENT B ↓connects partiallyONE EXPLANATION ↓STUDENT C ↓not enough structure yet
The input looked similar.
The receiving systems were different.
That means the lesson was never really identical.
It only looked identical from my side of the table.
The Student Who Flies
Let us start with the student who does tremendously well.
It is tempting to say:
Very smart child.
Perhaps.
But that description does not tell me very much about what actually happened.
Maybe the student already had strong foundations.
Maybe the new idea connected neatly to something learned before.
Maybe their retrieval was fast enough that working memory remained available for the new problem.
Maybe they had encountered a similar representation elsewhere.
Maybe the language of the question was easy for them.
Maybe they simply happened to be ready.
The important thing is that the new lesson found somewhere to attach.
NEW IDEA↓existing knowledge↓connection↓rapid understanding
The child appears fast because much of the road underneath may already exist.
The Fluctuating Student Is More Interesting
Then there is the student who seems to know it.
And then does not.
This can be frustrating.
Tuesday:
excellent.
Thursday:
mistakes everywhere.
Next week:
excellent again.
It is easy to call this careless.
Sometimes it is.
But fluctuation can mean many things.
Perhaps the idea is understood but not yet stable.
Perhaps retrieval is slow.
Perhaps the student can do it when the question looks familiar but not when the surface changes.
Perhaps one prerequisite works sometimes and collapses under load.
Perhaps attention changes.
Perhaps the child understands the concept but execution is unreliable.
So this learner may not need to be taught everything again.
They may need:
UNDERSTANDING↓RETRIEVAL↓VARIATION↓REPETITION↓STABILITY
That is a different teaching problem.
Then There Is The Student Who Needs More Time
This is the learner adults can become impatient with.
We explained it.
Then again.
Then another example.
Still not stable.
Why?
The dangerous answer is:
This child is weak.
That may describe the output.
It does not explain the mechanism.
Perhaps the learner is missing something underneath.
Perhaps the representation I am using does not connect to what they already know.
Perhaps there are too many steps being held at once.
Perhaps vocabulary is interfering.
Perhaps an earlier misconception is competing with the new explanation.
Perhaps the learner simply needs more encounters before the pattern becomes visible.
The slower learner may not need a louder version of the same explanation.
They may need a different route.
This Creates A Problem For The Tutor
What do I do now?
Student A is ready to move.
Student B needs stabilisation.
Student C still needs construction.
If I teach only for Student A, the other two are abandoned.
If I keep reteaching for Student C, Student A becomes bored.
If I aim for the middle, perhaps nobody receives exactly what they need.
This is the oddity of the small group.
Three students sounds simple.
But it creates three moving states.
STUDENT AREADY TO STRETCHSTUDENT BREADY TO STABILISESTUDENT CSTILL BUILDING
And they can swap positions next week.
That matters too.
The fast student in fractions may be the slow student in geometry.
The fluctuating English student may suddenly become the strongest in oral discussion.
These are states.
Not permanent identities.
So The Solution Cannot Be “Teach Three Students The Same”
This is where I think small-group tuition can easily become a miniature classroom.
Three students.
One worksheet.
Everybody does Question 1.
Then Question 2.
Then Question 3.
Smaller class.
Same architecture.
That gives more attention.
But perhaps it wastes the biggest advantage of being small.
With three students, I can let the lesson branch.
We can begin together.
Then separate.
Then return.
COMMON IDEA ↓CHECK EACH STUDENT ↓A → stretchB → stabiliseC → reconstruct ↓RETURN TOGETHER
Now the group has a shared lesson without requiring identical journeys.
That feels much closer to what three students are for.
One Topic, Three Tasks
Imagine we are learning percentage.
After the common explanation:
Student A understands immediately.
So perhaps I give:
What happens if the percentage change happens twice?
Or:
Can you solve this backwards?
Or:
Can you find another method?
Student B can calculate correctly but makes occasional errors.
So perhaps the job is:
Do these mixed questions without prompts.
Check each answer.
Tell me where your mistake happened.
Student C still does not see the relationship.
So perhaps we return to:
100 squares.
Fractions.
Decimals.
Part-whole relationships.
The three children are still learning percentage.
But they are not doing the same educational work.
That distinction is important.
The Group Can Rejoin At The Concept
This is something I like about small groups.
Individualisation does not have to mean three completely separate private lessons happening in one room.
There can still be a common centre.
A shared idea.
A discussion.
A problem.
Then the students work at different edges of that idea.
Afterwards, they come back together.
Student A may explain something.
Student B may expose a common error.
Student C may ask the question everyone else had silently skipped.
Now the differences become useful.
The Strong Student Should Not Simply Get More Work
This is another trap.
Student A finishes.
So:
Here are ten more questions.
That is not always stretch.
Sometimes it is merely quantity.
If the capability is already stable, perhaps the better move is:
different representation,
harder transfer,
explanation,
generalisation,
counterexample,
unfamiliar problem.
Do not punish speed with more of the same.
Use the available capacity to move sideways or deeper.
The Fluctuating Student Needs Evidence Of Stability
Student B is easy to misread.
Because there are good days.
We think:
Solved.
Then the problem returns.
For this learner, I want repeated evidence.
Can you do it now?
Can you do it after another topic?
Can you do it next week?
Can you do it when I change the wording?
Can you do it without being told which method to use?
Fluctuation tells me that capability may exist but is not yet dependable.
So the goal is not necessarily more explanation.
It is making the performance survive change.
The Slower Student May Need Us To Go Down Before Going Forward
Student C creates another difficult decision.
The class is learning a Secondary topic.
But the missing piece may be Primary-level.
Do we stop?
I think sometimes we should.
Not forever.
Just long enough to rebuild the bridge.
If algebra keeps collapsing because fractions are weak, continuing with more algebra may be inefficient.
We go down.
Repair.
Then return.
This can look like slower progress.
But perhaps it is the first real progress the learner has made in some time.
Pace And Progress Are Not The Same Thing
This distinction matters enormously.
Student A covers ten questions.
Student C covers three.
It looks obvious who progressed more.
But suppose Student A already understood the idea before the lesson and gained one small extension.
Student C finally understood the relationship that had blocked them for six months.
Who made the larger educational movement?
Question count does not tell us.
Page count does not tell us.
Syllabus speed does not always tell us.
Progress has to be measured relative to the learner’s starting state.
Fairness Does Not Mean Identical Treatment
Children notice differences.
Why does she get that question?
Why do I have to redo this?
That is a useful conversation.
Fair teaching does not always mean everyone receives the same worksheet.
If one child needs challenge and another needs repair, identical treatment may actually be unfair.
The common standard can remain.
But the route can differ.
SAME DESTINATION≠SAME NEXT STEP
That may be one of the central ideas in tutoring.
But We Should Be Careful Not To Freeze Students Into Types
There is a danger here too.
The fast one.
The careless one.
The slow one.
Once adults assign these identities, we start seeing everything through them.
That can become self-fulfilling.
I would rather say:
Student A is currently stable here.
Student B is currently variable here.
Student C currently needs more construction here.
The word currently matters.
Because learning changes.
The point of teaching is to change the state.
Three Students Give Us A Natural Comparison
There is another strange advantage to the group.
If all three students misunderstand the same explanation, I should probably look at the explanation.
If only one does, perhaps I should inspect that learner’s prerequisites.
If one student finds a completely different method, the others gain another representation.
The group gives the tutor information too.

That can be very useful diagnostically.
The Tutor Has To Run Three Loops
Perhaps that is the real oddity.
I am not really teaching one ninety-minute lesson.
I am running three feedback loops inside one shared environment.
STUDENT Ateach → observe → stretch → observeSTUDENT Bteach → observe → stabilise → retestSTUDENT Cteach → observe → repair → rebuild
The loops intersect.
But they are not identical.
This is why three students can still require enormous attention.
Small group does not automatically mean personalised.
The tutor has to actually use the information the small group makes visible.
Sometimes The Best Thing Is To Let One Student Wait
This sounds inefficient.
But learning does not have to be continuous teacher attention.
Student A may need ten minutes of independent challenge.
Good.
Student B may need quiet practice.
Good.
That gives me time to sit beside Student C and probe more carefully.
Then I return.
Student A explains what they discovered.
Student B shows me where the errors happened.
Student C tries the reconstructed concept independently.
The lesson breathes.
It does not have to be tutor-talk for ninety minutes.
And Students Can Help One Another Without Becoming Tutors
I am also careful here.
I do not want the strongest student spending the whole lesson teaching everyone else.
They deserve their own learning.
But brief explanation can be powerful.
When Student A explains an idea in their own words, they have to reconstruct it.
Student B hears a different representation.
Student C may hear language closer to their own.
Then I check.
Because peer explanation can also transmit mistakes.
Again:
active learning is useful because the thinking becomes visible.
The Real Unit Is Not The Lesson
This may be the deeper conclusion.
Schools and tuition centres often organise around lessons.
One lesson.
Ninety minutes.
Topic completed.
But the learner’s unit may be different.
Perhaps it is:
capability acquired.
And those boundaries do not match the timetable neatly.
Student A may acquire the capability in twenty minutes.
Student B may need three lessons before it stabilises.
Student C may need five lessons plus an earlier repair.
The clock is shared.
Learning time is not.
That is one of the unavoidable oddities of education.
So How Do We Solve It?
I don’t think there is one elegant trick.
The answer is a loop.
Start together.
Give the shared concept enough structure that everyone can enter.
Probe early.
Do not wait until the end of the worksheet to discover who is lost.
Separate the states.
Who needs construction?
Who needs stability?
Who needs transfer or stretch?
Branch the work.
Same broad topic, different immediate job.
Rejoin.
Let students compare, explain and see the larger structure.
Retest.
Especially the student who appeared to understand quickly.
Especially the fluctuating student.
Especially the learner who needed repair.
Then change the plan again.
That is the work.
Maybe This Is Why Three Is Interesting
With thirty students, this degree of continuous branching is extraordinarily difficult.
With one student, everything can be perfectly individualised, but there is no sideways information from peers.
Three creates an odd middle.
Enough difference to reveal that learners are genuinely different.
Small enough that the differences can still be followed.
It is not automatically ideal.
The tutor still has to manage it well.
But it creates the possibility of something I find useful:
COMMON LEARNING+INDIVIDUAL STATE+SIDEWAYS OBSERVATION+CONTINUOUS ADJUSTMENT
That is more interesting to me than simply saying:
Small groups give more attention.
What The Three Students Really Teach Me
Perhaps the students are teaching me something too.
They keep proving that teaching cannot be judged only by what I delivered.
I can give the same beautiful lesson three times at once.
One child flies.
One fluctuates.
One crawls.
The lesson did not enter an empty room.
It entered three different histories.
Three different foundations.
Three different patterns of attention.
Three different networks of knowledge.
So maybe the question after a lesson should not be:
Did I cover the topic?
It should be:
What changed in each learner?
That is a much harder question.
But if I only have three students in front of me, perhaps I have a reasonable chance of finding out.
