Problems | Education | Reflective | Preparing for Examinations: Why Studying Skills Need to Change

I think one of the biggest mistakes we make before examinations is assuming that studying is one skill.

It is not.

The way a child studies when first learning something should not be the same as the way they study one month before an examination.

And the way they prepare one week before an examination should probably change again.

Yet many students keep doing the same thing all the way through:

read notes,

highlight,

redo worksheets,

memorise,

do more questions,

repeat.

Sometimes that works.

But examinations are not asking only:

Have you seen this before?

They are asking something much harder:

Can you retrieve it, recognise when it is needed, use it under pressure, and do all of that without the teacher standing beside you?

That means the studying has to change as the examination gets closer.


Learning And Examination Performance Are Related, But They Are Not The Same Thing

When a topic is new, the student may need a lot of support.

Explanation.

Examples.

Guided practice.

Time.

The goal is to build the capability.

But an examination does not provide those conditions.

The paper does not say:

Here is the method you should use.

It does not say:

This is a fractions question.

Or:

Use inference here.

Or:

This Science question is testing heat transfer.

The student has to identify the problem.

Retrieve the relevant knowledge.

Choose.

Execute.

Check.

All while time continues moving.

So there is a transition:

LEARNING MODE
What is this?
How does it work?
Show me.
Let me practise.
EXAMINATION MODE
What is this testing?
What do I know?
Which method fits?
Can I execute it now?
Can I check it quickly?

The second mode needs different preparation.


Early Study Is About Building

At the beginning, I want the learner to slow down.

Understand.

Ask questions.

Make mistakes.

Use diagrams.

Compare methods.

Explain.

Return to foundations if necessary.

There is no point training speed on top of confusion.

If the learner does not understand, the first job is not examination technique.

It is construction.

UNDERSTAND
CONNECT
PRACTISE
STABILISE

This may take time.

And that is fine.

Because early study should be expensive.

We are building something new.


Later Study Should Become Less Comfortable

This sounds strange.

But once a student knows something, I don’t want every practice session to keep making retrieval easy.

The notes should begin to close.

The examples should disappear.

The chapter title should stop telling the student which method to use.

Because the examination will remove those supports anyway.

If the learner always practises with the answer nearby, they may become very good at recognising an answer they could not have produced independently.

That is not the same capability.

So preparation has to move from:

SEE
RECOGNISE

toward:

RETRIEVE
RECONSTRUCT
USE

The Examination Mixes Everything Together

This is another major change.

During learning, topics are often separated.

Fractions today.

Percentage tomorrow.

Ratio next week.

Science: Heat.

Then Light.

Then Electricity.

English: comprehension.

Then composition.

This separation is useful when learning.

But examination papers mix the world back together.

Now the student has to decide what they are looking at.

A Mathematics question may combine:

ratio,

percentage,

algebra,

geometry,

and language.

A Science question may require:

content knowledge,

graph interpretation,

comparison,

causal reasoning,

and precise language.

So examination preparation should eventually become mixed too.

Otherwise the student learns:

When I am on the fractions worksheet, use fractions.

That is not a very difficult decision.

The examination asks:

Which part of everything you know belongs here?

That is a different skill.


Studying Has To Move From Chapters To Retrieval

This is where I think revision often goes wrong.

A student reads Chapter 1.

Then Chapter 2.

Then Chapter 3.

Everything feels familiar.

And familiarity feels like knowledge.

But familiarity is dangerous.

Looking at something and thinking:

Yes, I know this.

is much easier than closing the book and producing it.

So I prefer questions such as:

What are the three things you need to remember here?

Explain this without the notes.

Draw the model.

What is the formula?

Why does it work?

What would a common mistake look like?

What question could I ask you that would expose whether you really understand this?

Now the learner has to pull information outward.

That is closer to examination conditions.


Then Retrieval Needs To Become Selection

But even retrieval is not enough.

A student may know five methods perfectly.

The examination still asks:

Which one should I use?

That is selection.

And selection is often where students lose marks.

They have knowledge.

But they cannot identify which knowledge belongs to the situation.

This is why I like changing the surface of questions.

Different wording.

Different diagrams.

Different numbers.

Different contexts.

Same underlying structure.

If the learner can still recognise what matters, the capability is becoming more robust.


And Then Selection Has To Become Execution

There is another uncomfortable transition.

A student can know exactly what to do and still perform badly.

Because examination execution has its own problems.

Time.

Carelessness.

Writing.

Checking.

Working memory.

Panic.

Question order.

Getting stuck.

Recovering after a difficult question.

These are not necessarily knowledge failures.

They are performance failures.

So by the final stage, studying has to include the conditions under which the knowledge will actually be used.

KNOW
RECOGNISE
SELECT
EXECUTE
CHECK

A student can fail at any one of those gates.

And the repair is different depending on which one failed.


This Is Why Doing More Papers Is Not Always The Answer

Practice papers are useful.

Very useful.

But only if we know why we are doing them.

If a student does ten papers and keeps making the same mistake, then the papers are not repairing anything.

They are measuring the same weakness repeatedly.

That can create the illusion of hard work.

At some point, stop.

Find the pattern.

Repair the weak link.

Then return to the paper.

The examination paper is a probe.

Not merely a punishment device.


Every Wrong Answer Should Change The Next Study Session

This is one of the most important examination habits.

A mistake should not simply become a red cross.

It should become information.

Why was it wrong?

Did I not know the content?

Did I forget?

Did I misread?

Did I choose the wrong method?

Did I calculate badly?

Did I rush?

Did I fail to check?

Did I run out of time?

Those are different problems.

So the error log should not only contain:

Question 17 — wrong.

It should contain:

Why did Question 17 fail?

Then the next revision session can respond to the actual failure.


Examination Preparation Should Narrow The Unknowns

Early in the year, there are many unknowns.

That is normal.

Closer to the examination, I want fewer surprises inside the learner.

Not necessarily fewer difficult questions.

Fewer unknown weaknesses.

The student should increasingly know:

What I am strong at.

What remains weak.

Which mistakes repeat.

Which topics require repair.

Where I lose time.

What happens when I panic.

How I check.

Which questions I should return to later.

That self-knowledge is part of examination preparation too.

A student who understands their own failure patterns is much easier to prepare than one who simply keeps doing more work.


The Final Weeks Should Not Look Like The First Weeks

This is where studying skills really need to change.

Perhaps the progression looks something like this:

EARLY
Learn
Understand
Ask
Build
Connect
MIDDLE
Retrieve
Mix topics
Explain
Vary
Repair weaknesses
LATE
Timed execution
Selection
Paper strategy
Error control
Checking
Recovery
FINAL
Protect what is stable
Repair only important gaps
Sleep
Calm
Enter the examination able to perform

Doing the same thing in every phase wastes time.

The learner has changed.

The demands have changed.

The preparation should change too.


There Is A Point Where More Learning Can Hurt Performance

This is another thing students often struggle with.

One week before an examination, they discover a new difficult topic.

Panic.

Now they try to rebuild everything.

Study later.

Sleep less.

Add more material.

But examinations require a functioning learner.

Not merely a learner containing the maximum possible number of facts.

There is a point where the objective should shift from:

Add more.

to:

Protect the system.

Stable sleep.

Known routines.

Targeted revision.

Confidence based on evidence.

No unnecessary chaos.

The final stage is not the best time to redesign the entire learner.


Calm Is An Examination Skill Too

I use the word calm a lot.

Not because examinations are relaxing.

They are not.

But panic is expensive.

It consumes attention.

A difficult Question 4 can damage Questions 5, 6 and 7 if the student carries it forward emotionally.

So examination preparation should also teach recovery.

I don’t know this yet.

Move.

Mark it.

Return.

One question is not the whole paper.

That sounds simple.

But it has to be practised before examination day.

We cannot ask a student to become calm for the first time when the clock starts.


The Tutor Has To Change Too

This is important.

The tutor cannot teach the same way throughout the year either.

At the beginning, I may explain a lot.

Closer to the examination, I should explain less.

The student needs to produce more.

If I keep rescuing every difficult question, I may make the lesson feel successful while weakening examination readiness.

Eventually:

That transfer has to happen before the exam.

The examination will remove me whether I am ready or not.


Preparing For The Exam Means Removing The Teacher

That may be the uncomfortable truth.

A lot of tutoring is built around helping.

But examination preparation eventually requires us to practise not helping.

Give the paper.

Stay quiet.

Watch.

Let the student decide.

Then afterwards, analyse what happened.

Where did the student get stuck?

What did they do when uncertain?

Did they recognise the question?

Did they check?

Did they manage time?

That tells us far more than doing another guided worksheet together.


The Examination Is A Different Environment

Perhaps this is the simplest way to understand it.

Studying happens in one environment.

The exam happens in another.

Good preparation gradually makes the first environment resemble the second.

Not immediately.

A beginner needs support.

But closer to the examination:

less prompting,

less chapter labelling,

less open notes,

more mixing,

more timing,

more independent decision-making.

We are not making learning harsher.

We are making transfer more realistic.


The Student Should Arrive With A Working System

Not just knowledge.

A system.

When I do not know, what do I do?

When I make an error, how do I detect it?

When time is running out, what matters?

When a question looks unfamiliar, how do I begin?

When I am unsure between two methods, how do I decide?

When I finish, what do I check?

These are studying skills too.

Perhaps more accurately:

performance skills.

And they need to be built before the performance.


So Why Do Studying Skills Need To Change?

Because the job changes.

At first:

Build knowledge.

Then:

Retrieve knowledge.

Then:

Choose knowledge.

Then:

Use knowledge.

Then:

Use it reliably under examination conditions.

A student who keeps studying the same way may become very knowledgeable and still underperform.

Not because the studying was useless.

Because it stopped evolving.


Coming Back To The Learner

This is another place where we cannot use one universal revision plan.

One student still has major content gaps.

They need repair.

Another knows the content but cannot retrieve quickly.

Another retrieves well but misreads questions.

Another loses marks through careless execution.

Another knows everything and collapses under time pressure.

Same examination.

Different preparation.

So when someone says:

My child needs to study more.

I think the next question should be:

Study what, in what way, for which failure?

That is much more useful.


The Last Stage Of Learning Is Letting Go

Perhaps that is what examination preparation really is.

The teacher builds.

Guides.

Corrects.

Supports.

Then gradually removes themselves.

The student takes ownership.

And eventually the learner walks into the examination room alone.

At that point, the question is no longer:

Did I teach this?

The question becomes:

Can the learner carry it without me?

That is why studying skills have to change.

Because eventually the support disappears.

And what remains has to belong to the student.
