Problems | Education | Reflective | More Work Is Not Always More Learning

There is a very understandable reaction when a child is struggling.

We add work.

Weak in Mathematics? More questions. Weak in comprehension? More passages. Examinations coming? More papers. Too slow? More practice. Cannot remember? More practice again.

I understand the instinct because I use practice constantly. Students do need repetition. Skills do need rehearsal. There are periods before examinations when substantial volume is unavoidable.

But the phrase “do more” has started bothering me for one simple reason.

It assumes we already know what needs more.

And sometimes we do not.


Twenty questions can be one mistake repeated twenty times

A student is struggling with algebra, so we give twenty algebra questions.

The worksheet fills. The pencil moves. Answers appear. From the outside, it looks productive.

But suppose Question 1 contains exactly the same misconception as Question 20.

The numbers changed. The layout changed. The student was busy for forty minutes. Yet the important thing did not move.

In that case, we did not create twenty separate opportunities for improvement. We may simply have given one unresolved idea twenty opportunities to reproduce itself.

That is the difficulty with educational work: activity is visible, learning is less so.

Parents can see completed worksheets. Teachers can count questions. Students can count hours.

Those things matter. They show effort, exposure and practice. They just do not automatically tell us what changed inside the learner.


Sometimes more is exactly right

I want to be careful not to make a fashionable argument against practice.

There are moments when the diagnosis really is simple: not enough repetitions yet.

A child understands multiplication but is slow. Practice helps. A student knows an algebraic procedure but still has to think through every tiny step. Practice can make the process more fluent. A student has learnt vocabulary but cannot retrieve it readily. Repeated retrieval matters. A student understands the examination format but cannot yet execute at examination speed. Timed practice matters.

There is nothing sophisticated about refusing useful repetition.

If repetition is what the learner is missing, repetition is exactly what the learner should receive.

The useful question comes just before that decision:

Is repetition actually the missing thing?


Sometimes the student does not need another question yet

Suppose a student cannot solve a particular kind of problem.

The first question fails. I explain. The second fails. I explain again. The third fails in much the same way.

At that point, another ten questions may not be the most useful thing I can give.

I should probably become curious.

What exactly is repeating?

Perhaps the student cannot identify which information matters. Perhaps one prerequisite from two years earlier is shaky. Perhaps the Mathematics is fine but the language of the question is not being decoded. Perhaps the child understands each step when shown but cannot decide which step should come first.

Those are different problems.

Giving ten more questions before finding out which one we are dealing with may make the lesson longer without making it better.


“Careless” can hide several different problems

I think “careless” is one of the most overloaded words in education.

A student loses six marks and we call all six careless. But perhaps one came from copying a number wrongly, one from an insecure negative-number rule, one from rushing because time was running out, one from misreading the question, one from holding too much mental arithmetic in mind, and one from a genuine random slip.

Calling all six “careless” turns several different causes into one personality description.

The child hears, “I am careless.”

But a more useful observation might be, “Your working becomes unreliable when too many steps stay in your head.”

That is smaller. We can do something with it. Write one more line. Slow one transition. Reduce the amount that has to be mentally carried. Then see whether the error becomes less common.

I much prefer repairing a working habit to trying to repair a child’s personality.


Hard work and useful work are not always the same thing

This is especially painful when a child really is trying.

The parent sees the effort. Homework is done. Practice papers are completed. Hours are spent. Yet the mark hardly moves.

Eventually everyone becomes frustrated.

The parent thinks, “How much more can we possibly do?”

The child may quietly conclude, “Maybe this is simply my limit.”

Sometimes that conclusion is reached far too early.

Effort and direction are different things. A person can work extremely hard against the wrong bottleneck.

If the problem is conceptual understanding, another timed paper may not repair it. If the problem is examination timing, another untimed worksheet may not repair it. If the student can handle familiar questions but not changed ones, twenty near-identical examples may make familiar performance look stronger while leaving the real difficulty untouched.

The work happened. The missing capability was somewhere else.


Three students can need three completely different kinds of practice

This becomes obvious in a small group.

Imagine three students all score poorly on the same chapter.

One has not understood the core idea. One understands it but executes unreliably. One can execute perfectly in familiar questions but struggles when the problem looks different.

The chapter heading is identical. The mark might even be identical. The useful work is not.

The first student needs the idea rebuilt. The second needs repetition until the process becomes stable. The third needs variation so the idea can travel beyond the form in which it was learnt.

If I give all three the same fifty questions, I am treating the worksheet as the intervention.

I would rather treat the student’s difficulty as the thing that decides the worksheet.


Parents do not need to diagnose the whole learning process

I do not want a parent reading this and thinking they now need to become an educational diagnostician.

That would simply create another kind of work.

The home version can be much smaller.

If a child has been doing a great deal of work without improving, pause before adding another pile and ask: “What part keeps going wrong?”

If nobody can answer clearly, that itself is useful information. Perhaps the next conversation with the teacher or tutor should be about locating the difficulty rather than adding volume.

And if the answer is clear—“She knows exactly what to do; she just isn’t fast enough yet”—then excellent. Now more repetition may be precisely right.

The point is not to avoid work.

The point is to make the work earn its time.


A child’s evening has a cost

This matters because a child does not possess infinite evenings.

School takes time. Homework takes time. Travel takes time. Sleep takes time. Family, friends, exercise and simply being young take time too.

Every additional hour of work comes from somewhere.

That does not mean every hour must be perfectly optimised. Childhood is not a factory and learning is not a production line. Some practice will be redundant. Some exercises will turn out not to matter much. That is normal.

But when we repeatedly add work, I think it is fair to ask what we believe the extra work is supposed to change.

If we cannot answer that at all, perhaps the pile has become reassuring to the adults rather than useful to the learner.


Examination season makes quantity especially seductive

As examinations approach, anxiety tends to make quantity look like control.

Three papers feel safer than one. Five revised chapters feel safer than two. A timetable packed from morning to night can look serious and reassuring.

Sometimes that volume is necessary. There genuinely is a lot to cover.

But there is also a point where additional work begins to damage the quality of the work already there. Corrections become superficial. Mistakes are glanced at rather than understood. The student becomes tired. Sleep shortens. The next day’s learning becomes weaker.

Then weaker performance produces more anxiety, and more anxiety produces more work.

That loop is worth noticing.

The answer is not automatically “study less”. It is to protect the work that is genuinely moving the learner forward.


Practice should be allowed to report back

Suppose we think a student needs ten more questions. Fine. Give some.

Then look.

Did the targeted failure become less common? Did the method become faster? Did the student need fewer prompts? Did the idea survive a slightly different question?

If yes, the practice is earning its place. Continue.

If thirty questions later the same failure appears in the same way, Question 31 may not be the obvious next move.

Perhaps we need to reconsider what the student is actually struggling with.

That is not an argument against practice. It is an argument for listening to what practice tells us.


Perhaps “work harder” needs one more sentence

I still believe in hard work.

There are subjects that demand it, seasons that require it and skills that simply do not become reliable without repetition.

I just think “work harder” is sometimes an incomplete sentence.

Work harder at what?

At retrieving? At explaining? At writing? At timing? At checking? At one missing prerequisite? At handling unfamiliar forms?

Once the effort has a destination, we can see whether it is actually getting us there.

And perhaps that is the quieter standard I want for tuition.

Not less work as a philosophy. Not more work as a reflex.

The amount and kind of work required by the problem in front of the child.

I would rather see ten questions change something than fifty questions whose main achievement is becoming fifty completed questions.

And if fifty are what it takes to create that change, then fifty may be exactly right.
