I think we may have missed a subject.
Not Mathematics.
Not English.
Not Science.
Not Humanities.
Something else.
And strangely, it might be an important body of capability for a Secondary 4 student to develop.
I am going to call it:
Examination Craft.
The name sounds slightly ridiculous at first.
Which is exactly why I think we have a problem.
Because if I say:
Bushcraft
everyone understands roughly what I mean.
You are going into the wilderness.
So perhaps you should know how to:
make shelter,
start a fire,
keep warm,
stay dry,
find clean water,
manage food,
navigate,
recognise danger,
deal with injury,
and somehow remain functional until you get home.
Nobody says:
Why would you need all that? Just be good at camping.
That would be absurd.
But I think we do something remarkably similar with examinations.
We spend years teaching students Mathematics, English, Science and everything else.
Then examination season arrives.
And essentially we say:
Okay. You know the subjects. Off you go.
Wait.
Do they know how to survive the examination?
I Don’t Mean Exam Tricks
This is important.
When I say Examination Craft, I do not mean:
Guess the topic.
Memorise ten model answers.
Look for shortcuts.
Learn secret tricks.
Predict what SEAB is going to ask.
That is not what I am interested in.
I mean something much more basic.
Suppose a student genuinely knows the subject.
What additional capabilities are required to convert that knowledge into performance under examination conditions?
That question suddenly opens a much bigger door.
Because an examination is not merely:
Question → Answer.
It is an operating environment.
There is limited time.
Limited attention.
Limited working memory.
Fatigue.
Uncertainty.
Pressure.
Multiple subjects.
Unexpected questions.
Errors.
Bad decisions.
Recovery.
And eventually, consequences.
That sounds less like a worksheet.
And much more like survival.
Knowing Mathematics Is Not the Same as Knowing How to Sit a Mathematics Examination
This feels obvious once I say it.
But I don’t think I had separated the two properly before.
A student might know how to solve simultaneous equations.
Good.
But what happens when they cannot solve Question 4?
Do they keep fighting it for fifteen minutes?
Do they abandon it?
Do they mark it and return?
Do they panic because the first difficult question has appeared earlier than expected?
Do they realise that the next five questions may be easier?
Do they know how much time they have already spent?
That is not simultaneous equations anymore.
That is Examination Craft.
A student may know the Science.
But what happens when the first page feels terrible?
Can they prevent that feeling from changing how they operate on the next page?
A student may know how to write an essay.
But can they decide how long to plan?
When to stop polishing one paragraph?
How much time must remain for the final section?
Again:
different capability.
I think we have been bundling these things together and calling all of it:
exam technique.
That phrase suddenly feels much too small.
Bushcraft Is Easy to See Because the Wilderness Is Visible
Maybe that is why we understand bushcraft so easily.
The dangers are visible.
Rain.
Cold.
Darkness.
No water.
No shelter.
Lost.
Injured.
Hungry.
We can imagine the environment fighting back.
An examination room looks harmless.
A table.
A chair.
A paper.
A clock.
Silence.
Nothing is trying to eat you.
So perhaps we underestimate what the environment is doing.
But it can consume resources continuously.
Every question consumes time.
Every decision consumes attention.
Uncertainty can consume working memory.
Every mistake may require recovery.
Every panic response can alter the next decision.
And the student has a fixed amount of time before the environment closes.
That sounds like a resource-management problem.
Perhaps the Examination Has Its Own Survival Skills
If I take the bushcraft analogy seriously, something interesting happens.
Bushcraft might include:

Examination Craft might include:

Ah.
Now I can see a subject.
Not one chapter.
A whole bundle of capabilities.
And I am not sure we teach them systematically enough.
“Just Manage Your Time”
This is a wonderful example.
We tell students:
Manage your time.
Okay.
How?
That is almost like telling someone in a forest:
Manage your water.
Correct.
But what is the craft?
How much water do I have?
How long must it last?
Where are the high-consumption periods?
What happens if I use too much early?
When do I conserve?
What happens if my original plan fails?
Now apply the same thinking to time.
How much time is available?
How much should be allocated per section?
Which questions deserve more?
When does persistence become waste?
How much reserve should remain?
When do I return to an unfinished problem?
What is the emergency procedure if I am twenty minutes behind?
That is no longer the slogan:
Manage your time.
That is a skill.
“Don’t Panic”
Another excellent piece of advice.
Don’t panic.
Wonderful.
I am sure the student had not considered that.
But again:
what is the craft?
If I encounter a question I cannot do, what exactly should I do next?
Look away?
Take ten seconds?
Move?
Write something?
Skip?
Re-read?
Return later?
How do I stop one difficult question from infecting the rest of the paper?
If the first paper went badly, how do I stop it infecting tomorrow’s paper?
This is starting to sound very much like first aid.
Not:
Never get injured.
But:
When damage occurs, know what to do next.
That is a completely different philosophy.
Maybe the Expert Candidate Is Not Calm Because They Are Naturally Calm
This connects back to our beginner versus expert discussion.
We often watch a strong examination student and say:
Very composed.
Perhaps.
But maybe there are practised routines underneath the composure.
They have encountered difficult papers before.
They know what being stuck feels like.
They have a route for it.
They know that one bad question does not define the paper.
They know when to move.
They know what to return to.
They know roughly how much time remains.
They have practised recovery.
So the calmness may not be a personality trait.
It may partly be prepared behaviour.
That is important.
Because prepared behaviour can be taught.
There Is Another Strange Thing
A student can spend four years learning Secondary School Mathematics.
But how many hours have they spent explicitly practising:
What do I do when my first method fails under timed conditions?
Or:
How do I recover when I discover an error six lines back?
Or:
How do I choose which question to return to with eight minutes left?
Or:
How do I decide whether checking this answer is worth the remaining time?
Those are real examination decisions.
And yet they often appear only accidentally.
The student encounters them in an exam and improvises.
That seems odd.
We practise solving the content.
But the operating conditions of the final performance are sometimes left to instinct.
Perhaps Mock Examinations Have a Bigger Job Than I Thought
This changes how I see mock papers too.
A mock examination is not merely:
another chance to measure marks.
It can be a training environment.
We can deliberately observe:
When does the student get stuck?
What do they do next?
Do they know where they are in the paper?
Do they notice the clock?
Do they protect easy marks?
Do they spend eight minutes rescuing one mark?
Do they verify answers?
Do they become less accurate when rushed?
What happens after an unexpected question?
Do they recover?
Ah.
Then mock examinations are not only assessing subject knowledge.
They are training performance under examination conditions.
That is much more interesting.
This Is Probably Why Some Students “Know It” But Still Don’t Score
I think we often become confused by this.
The student can do the work in tuition.
They understand when we discuss it.
They can complete homework.
They seem capable.
Then the examination result arrives.
Lower than expected.
And everyone says:
What happened?
Maybe we are looking for a knowledge failure when there was an operational failure.
Perhaps:
- too much time disappeared early,
- difficult questions were not bypassed,
- an error went unchecked,
- fatigue reduced accuracy,
- panic changed decision-making,
- familiar methods were used where they did not fit,
- the paper was navigated badly,
- or the student simply could not recover once something went wrong.
That does not mean content is irrelevant.
Obviously not.
Without the subject capability, there is nothing to perform with.
But perhaps:
SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE≠EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE
Something sits between them.
Ah. There It Is.
This may actually be the missing bridge after all the A1 articles.
We spent all that time asking:
How does an A1 happen?
We opened the tutor.
We opened the learner.
We opened studying skills.
We opened practice.
We opened transfer.
We finally said:
A1 is not magical.
It is the downstream result of many connected capabilities working together.
Good.
Then we ask the student to carry all those capabilities into an examination.
And apparently assume those capabilities will coordinate themselves.
That is the missing piece.
CAPABILITY
↓
EXAMINATION CRAFT
↓
USE UNDER CONDITIONS
↓
PERFORMANCE
↓
GRADE
Now the chain looks more complete.
And Secondary 4 Makes This Much Bigger
Because a Secondary 4 examination is not just one paper.
This is where I think the survival analogy becomes even more serious.
A student is not simply surviving:
2 hours of Mathematics.
They are surviving an examination season.
Paper after paper.
Subject after subject.
Recovery after recovery.
The skills required to survive one paper may not even be the same as the skills required to survive the whole period.
That means Examination Craft probably has levels.
Something like:
CRAFT OF THE QUESTION↓CRAFT OF THE PAPER↓CRAFT OF THE EXAMINATION DAY↓CRAFT OF THE EXAMINATION SEASON
That last one is much larger than I first thought.
And that probably deserves its own article.
I Think We Have Been Teaching the Tool But Not Enough of the Operating Craft
Maybe that is another way to say it.
We teach the formula.
The essay structure.
The vocabulary.
The scientific concepts.
The solving methods.
All necessary.
But knowing how to use a tool is not the same as knowing how to operate in the environment where it must be used.
Bushcraft understands this immediately.
You can own the best knife in the world and still get lost.
You can know how to light a fire and still run out of water.
You can have food and still choose the wrong route.
Survival depends on the coordination of multiple capabilities across changing conditions.
An examination may be much the same.
So Maybe Examination Craft Is a Real Subject After All
Not an examinable subject.
That would be funny.
Imagine:
Examination Craft Paper 1.
But a teachable capability.
A body of operational knowledge.
How to enter.
How to orient.
How to allocate.
How to choose.
How to continue.
How to abandon.
How to recover.
How to verify.
How to finish.
And later:
how to wake up the next morning and do it again.
That sounds like a craft to me.
And once I see it that way, something else becomes obvious.
We shouldn’t wait until the real examination to discover whether the student has it.
Because that would be like teaching someone how to start a fire—
and finding out in the wilderness that nobody taught them what to do when it rains.
Maybe we should teach the operating craft before the real examination asks for it.
