Are you or someone nearby in immediate danger from violence, a crime or a threatening person in Sengkang? Call 999 for Police emergency assistance. If speaking would put you in danger, the Singapore Police Force provides emergency SMS at 70999. Move to safety if you can do so without increasing the risk. The action list comes first.
Quick action plan: crime and personal safety
- Protect life first: put distance, a locked door or other safe barrier between you and a threat where possible. Avoid confronting, following or physically restraining a suspect.
- Call 999 if there is an ongoing assault, forced entry, threat to life or other situation requiring immediate police intervention.
- If you cannot safely speak, SMS 70999. Include your exact location, what is happening and that you cannot call. Watch for the Police acknowledgement if safe.
- Give the exact location: Sengkang HDB block, floor and unit; MRT/LRT station, entrance, platform, mall level, bus-stop number or a distinctive nearby landmark.
- Report injuries and other risks. If someone is seriously hurt or needs urgent medical care, call 995 too, or tell the Police dispatcher so the correct responders can be coordinated.
- After you are safe, preserve evidence such as messages, screenshots, times and descriptions, without risking your safety to record an incident.
Which number should you call?
- 999 — Police emergency: for immediate police assistance where safety or security is at risk. Singapore Police Force official contact list.
- 70999 — Police emergency SMS: when it is unsafe to make a voice call or you cannot speak. This is 70999, not the older 71999 number, which was replaced in October 2024.
- 995 — SCDF: for a life-threatening medical emergency, fire or rescue situation.
- 1800 255 0000 — Police hotline: for providing crime-related information in non-immediate situations. It is not a replacement for 999 during danger.
- 1799 — ScamShield helpline: the 24-hour line for scam-related support. If money has been transferred, also contact the bank immediately through an official channel.
How to choose between an emergency and a non-emergency police report
If a dangerous incident is happening now or somebody may be injured, trapped, threatened or at risk of immediate harm, 999 is the correct starting point. The operator can ask follow-up questions and coordinate assistance. You are not required to establish whether a particular criminal offence has occurred before requesting help.
For an incident that has ended and presents no immediate danger, the Police offer online reporting and other e-services. The hotline 1800 255 0000 is used for providing crime-related information. Use the official SPF website to find the applicable reporting path; avoid following unknown links sent to you by someone claiming to be an officer.
The difference is urgency, not importance. A frightening incident from last night may still need a report and follow-up, but it need not be handled through the emergency line if everybody is presently safe.
What to say to 999 in Sengkang
Start with the incident and location, not a lengthy history. Sengkang contains many similar-looking residential blocks, multi-level walkways and transport exits; a caller who gives a precise access point helps police find the right scene.
- Where: ‘I am at Block [number], [street], [floor or unit], Sengkang,’ or the station/venue and entrance.
- What: ‘Someone is trying to force the door,’ ‘I am being threatened,’ or ‘A person is injured after an assault.’ Use direct facts, not speculation.
- Who is at risk: people inside, children, people with disabilities and anybody who cannot safely leave.
- What is happening now: whether the person is still present, left recently, may have a weapon, or is preventing someone from calling.
- How to contact you: your phone number, whether a callback would be unsafe, and any special communication need.
Do not publish someone else’s home address or live location on social media during an incident. Give sensitive details directly to the emergency operator.
How emergency SMS 70999 works
The Police SMS 70999 service is designed for situations where it is unsafe to call 999 or a caller cannot speak. The Police say the caller should send a brief message stating the nature of the emergency and the location. An acknowledgement is sent if the message is received, and operators may request further details.
A useful message format is: ‘Police help needed. Sengkang Block [number], street [name], floor [number]. [What is happening.] Cannot speak safely.’ Give a unit number if that is relevant and safe to share. Normal SMS charges may apply. If speaking becomes safe, calling 999 normally provides more direct communication.
Do not confuse the two SMS numbers: 70999 is Police emergency SMS; 70995 is SCDF emergency SMS for the deaf, hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired community. In a dangerous situation where you can safely call, use the correct voice emergency number first.
What to do in common Sengkang situations
A person is following you between the LRT and home
Move towards a staffed or busy public location if it is safe, avoid leading the person to your home, and call 999 if you feel there is an immediate threat. Give the station, exit or nearby business rather than only saying ‘near Sengkang LRT’. Ask nearby staff for help without confronting the person.
Someone is trying to enter your flat
If safe, move everyone away from the door to a protected room or other safe location and call 999. Do not open the door to investigate, argue through the gate or attempt to film at close range. Describe what you can hear and whether the person is still outside.
You witness an assault in a common corridor
Call 999 from a safe place, state the block, floor and unit or corridor location, and describe injuries. Do not insert yourself into a violent confrontation. If somebody is seriously injured and it is safe to provide assistance, call 995 and follow instructions.
A stranger claims to be a police officer and demands money
Do not transfer money, give passwords or disclose OTPs. End the suspicious conversation and verify only through official channels. The Police and hospitals do not need you to pay an unknown caller to cancel a police case. If funds have been transferred, immediately contact your bank’s fraud hotline using an official number, then seek Police and ScamShield assistance.
You find possible theft after returning home
If you suspect an intruder could still be inside, do not enter: move away and call 999. If the scene is safe and no immediate threat remains, preserve the scene and use the appropriate Police reporting route. Make a list of missing items after safety is secured.
If you have been scammed: the first steps
- Stop further payments and contact your bank immediately through the official app or phone number to report suspected fraud and request urgent protective action.
- Secure your accounts: change exposed passwords from a trusted device, revoke unauthorised access and check recent transactions.
- Call ScamShield at 1799 for scam guidance. A crime report may still be needed; use the official SPF reporting route.
- Preserve evidence: transaction references, conversations, usernames, URLs, payment details and a timeline.
- If threats or coercion are happening right now, call 999. Do not wait until you have collected every screenshot.
Recovering money is not guaranteed, and time can matter. Avoid ‘recovery agents’ promising to retrieve funds in exchange for advance fees; they may create a second scam.
After the immediate danger ends
Take practical care of people first. Seek medical attention for injuries, even when outward signs appear minor. Where appropriate, write down the sequence of events while memories are fresh; distinguish what you directly saw from what you heard from someone else.
Keep originals of relevant messages and receipts. If you share evidence with investigators, use official Police channels rather than broadcasting private recordings that could expose victims or witnesses. If you need a case reference for insurance or other follow-up, ask Police how to obtain it through the proper channel.
For ongoing fear at home or repeated harassment, discuss the risk with Police and trusted local support services. Your immediate safety plan should be specific: who can be contacted, which place is safe, and what to do if the person returns.
Prepare a simple safety plan for your household
- Save 999 and the Police emergency SMS number 70999 in accessible places, and tell family members which is which.
- Teach children and older relatives to state the block, street, unit and floor rather than assuming a phone call shows the address automatically.
- Agree on a safe place to meet after an incident; do not choose a location that is itself part of the danger.
- Do not share home addresses, gate codes, travel schedules or one-time banking codes with unfamiliar callers.
- Know how to report a scam to your bank and keep its official fraud support number available.
- If someone cannot safely speak, consider how they will send a clear location message without drawing attention to themselves.
Frequently asked questions
Is 999 only for violent crimes?
No. Use 999 when you require immediate police assistance, including an active threat or other urgent security danger. For non-immediate reports, use the official SPF channels.
Can I SMS the Police instead of calling?
Use 70999 when it is unsafe to speak or you are unable to do so. The Police encourage calling 999 if safe because direct communication can speed clarification.
Is 71999 still the Police emergency SMS number?
No. The Police announced the change from 71999 to 70999 effective 1 October 2024. Current official Police contact pages use 70999.
Can I report a crime without knowing the suspect’s name?
Yes. Report accurate observations, the time and location and any available description. Do not guess an identity or put yourself at risk trying to discover one.
Who should I call if an incident causes serious injury?
Call 995 for urgent medical help. If there is an active crime or threat, call 999 as well or tell the operator about both issues so responders can coordinate.
