What to Do and Who to Call in an Emergency in Sengkang | Suspicious Package, Bomb Threat and Security Alert

Two commuters keep distance from an unattended bag at a Sengkang transit concourse while security is contacted safely.

Found a suspicious unattended package, received a bomb threat, or noticed a possible security hazard at a Sengkang MRT/LRT station, mall, HDB block or public place? Move away, do not touch or open the item, keep others from approaching and call 999 from a safe location. Tell the Singapore Police Force precisely where the item or threat is located. If speaking is unsafe, the official Police emergency SMS number is 70999; the SGSecure app is another official reporting route.

A forgotten shopping bag is not automatically a bomb. But an item with genuinely suspicious circumstances should be handled by trained authorities rather than inspected or carried away by the public. Alert station, building or mall security when safe; do not let a private search delay urgent Police notification. If anyone is injured, there is fire or an explosion has occurred, call 995 for SCDF emergency rescue and medical help.

  • Suspicious parcel, threatening message or security danger: Police 999 or emergency SMS 70999 if not safe to speak.
  • Do not touch, open, shake, move or attempt to dispose of a suspicious item.
  • Leave the immediate area safely: avoid crowding near the object and follow Police or venue staff directions.
  • Tell staff: exact station, HDB block, level, entrance or location; do not create panic.
  • Injuries, fire or explosion: call 995 for emergency rescue and ambulance response.
  • Check official instructions: SGSecure security-warning guidance and SPF’s emergency numbers.

The first minute: what to do without making danger worse

  1. Keep a safe distance. Do not approach merely to examine labels, look inside or take a close photograph.
  2. Do not touch or move the item. Leave any suspicious package, container or vehicle undisturbed.
  3. Warn people nearby without causing a rush. Tell them to stay away and use an alternative safe route.
  4. Contact Police on 999 from a safe place. Report the location, what appears suspicious and whether the situation is changing.
  5. Alert authorised staff. At a rail station or mall, notify security or the control room so they can guide commuters and communicate with Police.
  6. Follow directions. Police or authorised security personnel may establish an exclusion zone or decide an evacuation is necessary.
  7. Call 995 if medical or rescue needs arise. Do not delay treatment of an injured person, but do not enter the danger area to attempt an unsafe rescue.

Who to call in Sengkang

  • 999 — Singapore Police Force: urgent suspicious package, credible threat or immediate policing emergency. SPF Contact Us.
  • 70999 — SPF emergency SMS: for immediate Police help when speaking is not safe; give exact address and threat details.
  • SGSecure app: official reporting pathway for suspicious items, behaviours and security threats. SGSecure reporting guidance.
  • 995 — SCDF: for fire, explosion, major injury, urgent rescue or severe smoke exposure.
  • Mall or rail station security: the nearest authorised control point can help keep people away and direct responders; it is not a substitute for 999.
  • 1800 255 0000 — Police Hotline: to provide non-urgent crime-related information, not the substitute for 999 during an immediate threat.

When should an unattended item be treated as suspicious?

Context matters. A school bag left at a table may simply be forgotten. An unattended object deliberately hidden near a restricted area, an unusual parcel with concerning external features, or a package associated with a threat creates a different concern. SGSecure’s 2026 indicators describe unusual placement, odours and other circumstances as examples that deserve attention.

You are not expected to determine whether an object is dangerous. Do not open it to look for a label, lift it to assess its weight or attempt to move it to the bin. A safe report includes what you actually observed, where it is and why it concerned you.

Avoid accusing the nearest commuter or passer-by of terrorism simply because they were near the object. Report specific observable behaviour if relevant and allow Police to assess it.

What to tell the 999 operator

  • Exact location: Sengkang MRT concourse, LRT station, mall level, HDB block, unit floor, car park or bus stop.
  • Object: bag, parcel, container or vehicle, and a simple external description from a safe position.
  • Time: when it was first noticed and whether anyone was seen leaving it.
  • Threat: whether anybody said or wrote that it was dangerous, using their exact words if safely available.
  • People: whether a crowded route, shop, childcare facility or accessible exit is nearby.
  • Immediate danger: unusual smoke, noise, injury or a person apparently threatening others.
  • Contact: your safe callback number and whether venue staff have already been alerted.

If a bomb threat arrives by phone

Stay calm and alert Police and the responsible building management promptly. If the caller remains on the line and it is safe, note the words used, the time and any information voluntarily given. Do not attempt to interrogate the caller or make provocative statements. Arrange for another person to contact Police if you are occupied with the call.

Preserve the call details, telephone number or recordings only as permitted and safely available. Do not make up what you think the caller meant. A factual record of the exact phrase, possible location and time can help investigators.

Do not announce a self-organised search of the building or invite colleagues to inspect bins. Follow Police and building security instructions on whether and how occupants should leave.

If a threat arrives by email, text or social media

Do not delete a threatening message, forward it widely or click suspicious attachments. Report it to Police with the account name, timestamp, exact words and available evidence. A screenshot can be helpful, but only when capturing it does not delay emergency contact or expose somebody to another risk.

If a message contains a link or file that you do not recognise, avoid opening it. The Police can decide how to preserve evidence. Public sharing of threatening screenshots may spread misinformation or disrupt an ongoing response.

Do not assume that every hoax-looking message is harmless. Threat credibility is for the proper authorities to assess.

If the suspicious object is inside a rail station

Stand clear and alert station staff immediately. Do not attempt to carry an unattended bag to the Passenger Service Centre, or place it on a train so it can be ‘checked elsewhere’. Keep children with you and stay clear of platform edges and crowded escalators.

The station operator may close an entrance, redirect passengers or provide transport alternatives. Follow instructions from the operator and Police, rather than the route suggested by an unverified message in a commuter group.

For ordinary train delays without a security hazard, see the Sengkang MRT/LRT disruption guide. It is different from a security emergency.

If a suspicious package is in an HDB corridor

Move away from the object without touching it and alert Police if the circumstances are genuinely suspicious. Do not send an older resident, child or neighbour to investigate. If there is a credible immediate threat, inform the responsible building or estate staff so they can support Police access and resident directions.

An HDB town council can assist with common-area management, but it is not the primary responder to a credible bomb threat. Police 999 is the appropriate urgent security contact. Avoid gathering at the exact door or stairwell where the object is located.

What if the package is at a shopping mall?

Report the location to the mall’s security control and Police. Give the floor, closest shop or entrance and whether there are children or mobility-impaired shoppers nearby. Do not create a crowd to look at the item or insist that a shop assistant open it.

If staff direct an evacuation, move calmly to the announced safe route. Do not go back for a dropped bag or shopping purchase. Keep the path clear for security and emergency responders.

What is Run, Hide, Tell?

The SGSecure Run, Hide, Tell guidance is intended for an active violent or terrorist attack. Run away from the danger by a safe route; if escape is impossible, hide, stay out of sight and silence the phone; tell Police on 999 or SMS 70999 when safe.

This is distinct from an unattended bag with no active attack. For a suspicious item, the first actions are to avoid touching it, move clear and report it. Do not automatically perform an active-attacker response when there is no attacker.

Should residents photograph an unusual parcel?

A photograph may help investigators in some circumstances, but never approach to obtain a better angle, touch or reposition the item, or put others at risk. Report a concise description first and follow any directions from Police about evidence.

Do not publish the image together with speculation naming an individual, business or ethnicity. That can stigmatise innocent people, spread panic and complicate response work.

If someone begins to feel unwell near an object

Move to a safer area as directed and report symptoms accurately. If there is an actual chemical release, severe breathing difficulty, collapse or injury, call 995 and alert Police about the suspected source. Avoid touching powders, liquids or damaged containers.

The underlying hazard might not be an explosive device. Bystanders should not attempt to diagnose it by smelling, touching or tasting unknown material. Trained responders determine safe handling and any required protective measures.

How to avoid spreading an unfounded rumour

  • Check whether a claimed threat comes from an official Police or SGSecure announcement.
  • Do not repost an old station closure photograph as a current emergency.
  • Separate observed facts from someone else’s speculation.
  • Keep confidential personal information out of group chats.
  • Share official reporting and safety instructions when appropriate, not accusations.
  • Do not use an emergency hotline merely to ask whether a forwarded rumour is true.

Four Sengkang examples

A parcel is left behind at a crowded LRT concourse

Remain away, notify station staff and call 999 if the placement or circumstances raise a genuine security concern. Give the exact entrance and location without touching the parcel.

A message claims there is an explosive device in a mall

Treat the threat seriously, preserve the message and notify Police and mall security promptly. Do not organise your own investigation or spread a screenshot as confirmed fact.

A commuter notices a bag but sees its owner return

A temporarily unattended item may have an ordinary explanation. If no suspicious circumstances remain, notify staff if appropriate rather than making unfounded accusations. If a specific threat remains, Police should assess it.

A security incident escalates to an armed attack

Follow Run, Hide, Tell: escape by a safe route, hide if escape is impossible, and notify Police when safe. If anyone is severely injured, SCDF emergency assistance may also be required.

Frequently asked questions

Is 999 the correct number for a genuinely suspicious package?

Yes. SGSecure directs reporting of suspicious security threats to Police by calling 999, SMS 70999 or its official app.

Should I take the parcel to station staff?

No. Do not touch or move it. Alert staff and Police while keeping clear.

Does every unattended bag indicate a bomb?

No. Context and observable concerns matter. Staff and Police assess the report; do not diagnose or accuse someone without evidence.

Can I use emergency SMS if I cannot safely speak?

Yes. Police emergency SMS is 70999, distinct from SCDF’s separate emergency SMS service.

Should I evacuate the entire building myself?

Move away from the immediate danger and follow Police or authorised management instructions. Do not direct a large uncoordinated crowd into an unsafe route.
