The Goal of Tuition
Help today should create less unnecessary help tomorrow.
Tuition begins because some form of help is useful. The deeper question is what that help is supposed to become.
The 50-Second Answer
If support only makes a learner better at waiting for support, the immediate problem may have been solved while a second problem was created.
The goal of tuition is to transfer learning operations back to the learner.
At first, the tutor may need to carry interpretation, method selection, sequencing, checking, confidence calibration or even the first move. As capability grows, those jobs should increasingly move back to the learner.
Independence is therefore not the absence of help. It is the learner taking over more of the thinking that help once had to provide—and knowing when a precise piece of help is genuinely useful.
A Good Tuition Lesson Can Look Almost Wrong
A student receives a Mathematics question.
The tutor says nothing.
The student reads the question. Pauses. Draws a representation. Crosses it out. Tries another route. Writes three lines. Stops. Checks the original wording. Continues.
Then the student asks one question:
“I think this route works. I’m only unsure whether this condition changes the sign.”
The tutor answers that narrow question. The student finishes the problem.
A parent watching might reasonably wonder why the tutor did so little.
But imagine the same learner six months earlier. The tutor may have needed to read the question with the learner, identify the important information, name the topic, choose the representation, supply the first step, notice the mistake and confirm the answer.
Now almost all of those operations are being carried by the learner.
The quiet lesson may be evidence that tuition is working.
What Tuition May Need to Carry at the Beginning
A blocked or fragile learner may not be missing only subject knowledge. The external support can be carrying several learning operations at once.

What diagram, structure, sentence or model makes the problem visible?

Which concept, method or evidence is relevant?
Begin
What is the first useful move when the learner feels stuck?

Does the answer fit the task, evidence and constraints?

What happens after the first route fails?
Good tuition may legitimately carry several of these at first. The mistake is assuming it should keep carrying them after the learner has become capable of taking them back.
The Handover Is the Point
Useful support is scaffolding. It carries weight while the structure is being built. But scaffolding is not successful because it remains attached forever.
A tutor is not trying to make human guidance obsolete. The goal is narrower and more practical: for every capability successfully transferred, the learner should no longer need the tutor to perform that learning operation for them.
Independence is the handover point: the learner recognises the task, chooses the route, acts, checks and knows what to do next without hidden prompting.
This does not happen once for the whole child. A learner may be independent in arithmetic and still be a novice in algebra. Independent in familiar comprehension and still need explicit modelling for literary analysis. Confident in one Science topic and blocked by a new experimental design.
Handover happens capability by capability.
Why the Right Amount of Help Must Change
There is no single amount of help that is always educationally correct.
A novice can need substantial explanation, modelling and worked guidance. Removing support too early can turn “independence” into abandonment. But assistance that was useful while knowledge was fragile can later become redundant—or even interfere with the learner doing the thinking independently.
A 2025 meta-analysis of the expertise reversal effect found this general pattern across many experimental studies: learners with low prior knowledge tended to benefit more from high-assistance instruction, while learners with higher prior knowledge tended to benefit more from lower-assistance instruction. The authors also report important moderation and caution, particularly across ages and subject domains.
The Education Endowment Foundation makes the same practical point in classroom language: scaffolds are temporary, and teachers can work from a “least amount of support first” principle—allowing pupils to self-scaffold where possible before adding prompts, clues, modelling or correction.
The correct question is not “How much help is good?” It is “How much help is useful now?”

Independent Does Not Mean “Never Ask for Help”
A learner who never asks a question can be independent. The learner can also be completely lost.
Mature independence includes knowing the boundary of one’s understanding. It includes recognising when another attempt is still productive, when a different representation should be tried, and when a narrow question can save thirty minutes of unproductive wandering.
“I don’t understand anything” hands almost the entire problem to the tutor.
“I can form the equation, but I don’t understand why this term changes sign when it moves across” is different. The learner has located the boundary, preserved what they can already carry and requested only the missing piece.
The destination is not NO HELP. It is BETTER JUDGEMENT ABOUT HELP.
Why Three Students Can Help Responsibility Transfer
A three-student class has an educational feature that is easy to overlook.
The tutor cannot—and should not—carry every learner’s thinking every second.
While one learner receives an explanation, another may have to begin independently. While one asks a question, another checks a completed route. While one receives correction, another has a few minutes in which the next move cannot come from the tutor immediately.
With close observation, those intervals become useful controlled independence tests.
Who starts?
Does the learner begin, or wait for the tutor’s attention?
Who checks?
Does the learner inspect the work, or look immediately for confirmation?
Who recovers?
When the route fails, does the learner freeze, guess, rethink or ask precisely?
This is not an argument for withholding teaching or leaving a child unattended. It is an argument for watching what happens in the moments when the tutor is no longer supplying the next move.
The Dangerous Lesson Is the One That Looks Smooth
“Just tell me the method” can produce a very efficient-looking tuition session.
The tutor identifies the topic. The tutor chooses the method. The learner executes. The tutor confirms. The worksheet fills with ticks.
Nothing about direct instruction is inherently wrong. Clear modelling can be exactly what a novice needs.
The trap appears when the learner becomes good at following the tutor’s route but never has to select a route independently. The class looks successful because part of the thinking has quietly remained outside the learner.
Correct with a prompt is not the same evidence as correct without the prompt.

Support Should Fade in Direction, Not on a Calendar
“Use less help over time” can itself become too simple.
A learner may need less support in a familiar area and then suddenly need more when the curriculum changes. Secondary school can expose a new abstraction. Additional Mathematics can make a previously confident Mathematics learner a novice again. A new writing genre, practical Science demand or examination format can increase the load.
So support is not supposed to decline in a perfectly straight line.
More external structure → shared control → guided independence → independent operation → precise help when genuinely needed.
A harder environment can temporarily move the learner left again. That is not failure. It is a new learning state.

Tuition Must Re-Earn Its Place
A useful intervention should periodically be judged by what is actually changing in the learner. That creates four legitimate decisions.
Continue
The learning job still exists and the current support is producing useful change.
Change
The evidence says the intervention is solving the wrong problem, using the wrong level of support or targeting the wrong weak link.
Reduce
The learner can now carry more of the job and no longer needs the same frequency, prompting or intensity.
Stop
The intervention has completed its present job and the learner can carry it adequately without tuition.
“Continue forever” is not an educational outcome.
Stopping one intervention does not mean the learner will never need teaching again. A later stage can create a new legitimate learning job. The important point is that tuition should respond to current need rather than become a permanent identity.
Marks Still Matter
None of this turns tuition into a philosophical exercise detached from school.

How We Can See Control Moving Back to the Learner
- The learner begins without waiting for a hidden cue.

- The learner retrieves a relevant idea instead of immediately requesting the formula or model answer.
- The learner can compare two possible approaches.
- The learner notices when an answer is implausible.
- The learner can locate the exact point of uncertainty.
- The learner recovers after a failed route instead of freezing.
- The learner asks a narrower, more useful question when help is needed.
- The learner can transfer the capability into a changed context.
- The learner increasingly checks, organises and revises without reminders.
None of these behaviours guarantees a particular grade on a particular day. Together they tell us something larger: more of the learning system now lives inside the learner.

But the student reads the problem and begins.
Months earlier, the tutor carried the next move. Now the learner carries it. When uncertainty appears, the learner can locate it. When a route fails, the learner can recover. When help is needed, the question is smaller and more precise.
Tuition earns its place when help today creates more capability tomorrow.
At first, the tutor may carry the next move.
Then they carry less of it.
Eventually, for something that once needed teaching, the learner looks at the problem and begins.
That is not the tutor disappearing. That is the teaching arriving.
