Readiness Is Always Bounded
A learner can be ready for independent factorisation on familiar expressions but not yet ready to select factorisation inside an unseen A-Math problem. A P6 learner can be ready to solve a ratio problem independently under ordinary conditions but not yet under the time and integration load of a full paper.
“Ready” should name the capability and conditions. It should never become a global label attached to the person.
A Practical Readiness Review
- State the exact capability being reviewed.
- List the strongest observed evidence.
- Identify which supports were still present.
- Identify the conditions under which the evidence was produced.
- Ask what transfer or delay evidence exists.
- State what remains unknown.
- Choose whether to proceed, hold one boundary, reconfigure or collect one more piece of evidence.
A Mathematics Example
A Secondary 4 learner has improved in trigonometry. Recent evidence shows accurate topical work, successful mixed-question selection and one delayed retrieval check. However, the learner still relies on a diagram annotation prompt in unfamiliar three-dimensional problems.
The readiness conclusion should therefore be precise: ordinary trigonometric route selection may be ready for greater independence, while three-dimensional representation remains under review.
What a Readiness Review Should Prevent
- Premature release: recent success is mistaken for durable independence.
- Permanent support: evidence is strong but adult control never reduces.
- Global labels: one weak condition becomes “not ready for Mathematics”.
- Evidence blindness: decisions follow habit or timetable despite changed learner work.
- Perfectionism: progress is blocked until every possible condition has been tested.
Readiness Does Not Require Certainty
Education rarely offers complete certainty. The purpose of review is not to eliminate all uncertainty. It is to make uncertainty visible enough that the next step is proportionate.
A learner may be ready to proceed with a bounded next task while one secondary question remains under observation. This is often stronger than either reckless progression or indefinite holding.
The Curie Check
The Curie lens asks what evidence is genuinely visible. Marks, working, explanations, changed-condition attempts and delayed retrieval are signals. None is a complete diagnosis alone.
A readiness review therefore keeps observed, inferred and unknown separate. That makes the decision more correctable when later evidence returns.
The Tutor Interface
The learner should experience readiness as a change in responsibility, not as a hidden score. “You have shown that you can start these independently, so I am going to stop naming the method” is educationally useful language.
This turns the review into a handover that the learner can understand.

Can readiness be revised?

Should parents wait for perfect scores?
No. Perfect scores are neither necessary nor sufficient. The more useful question is whether the relevant capability is sufficiently independent, transferable and stable for the next step.

As learners mature, readiness review should become increasingly self-directed. They learn to ask whether they really know a topic, what evidence they have, which supports they still use and whether the capability survives outside the practice environment.
