Prompt Dependence | Marie Curie Series | When Correct Work Is Not Yet Independent

A student can produce correct work and still not fully own the process that produced it.

The teacher points to one line. The student remembers the method.

The tutor asks, “What did we do in the previous question?” The learner restarts.

A worked example sits beside the exercise. The student follows the same shape successfully.

All of this can be useful scaffolding.

The Curie question is what happens when the scaffold is gradually removed.

Prompt dependence exists when performance remains substantially supported by cues that the learner cannot yet recreate independently.

The One-Sentence Answer

A prompt is successful when it helps build a capability that later survives without the prompt; if the same cue remains permanently necessary, the performance may be stronger than the independence underneath it.

Prompts Are Not Bad

It would be a serious mistake to interpret this article as “never help the student.”

Learning often requires support before independence is possible.

  • A P1 learner may need the teacher to model how to segment a sentence.
  • A Mathematics student may need a representation before the abstraction becomes meaningful.
  • An English learner may need a question stem to learn how evidence supports inference.
  • A Science student may need a structured observation-to-explanation sequence before reconstructing it alone.

This is scaffolding.

The educational problem is not the existence of scaffolding. It is forgetting to check whether the scaffolding is becoming less necessary.

The Tutor Can Become Invisible Power Steering

In a smooth Tutorial, the adult often knows exactly when to intervene.

A pause. A raised eyebrow. A finger on the relevant line. A short reminder. A question asked at precisely the right moment.

The student continues.

This can make the lesson look highly productive. It may genuinely be productive.

But our existing reflection A Good Lesson Should Leave Evidence raises the uncomfortable question:

Who solved the question — the learner, the adult, or a temporary system created by both of them together?

The answer matters because only one of those enters the examination room.

Prompts Come in Many Forms

The last one is easy to miss. A worksheet labelled “Quadratic Equations” has already told the learner something an examination may not tell them: what family of method to consider.

Ask What the Learner Actually Owns

Suppose a student gets the final answer correct.

We can still ask:

  • Did the learner identify the problem type?
  • Did they choose the representation?
  • Did they retrieve the method?
  • Did they sequence the steps?
  • Did they detect the error?
  • Did they decide when the answer was complete?

If the adult supplied three of those six operations, the correct answer is still useful evidence — but it is evidence of supported performance, not yet full independence.

A Prompt-Fading Ladder

Support can be reduced gradually rather than removed abruptly.

  1. Model: the teacher demonstrates the complete process.
  2. Guide: the teacher asks structured questions through the process.
  3. Cue: the teacher provides only the first useful signal.
  4. Pause: the teacher waits before helping, allowing the learner to orient.
  5. Independent attempt: the learner owns the route.
  6. Transfer: the learner repeats the capability when the surface changes.

The ladder is not rigid. A learner can move up or down depending on the topic and developmental stage.

The important direction is toward increasing ownership.

Removing Help Too Early Can Be Just as Unhelpful

Independence is not produced by abandonment.

If a learner does not yet have the representation, vocabulary, prerequisite or procedure needed to begin, simply saying “try harder on your own” does not create the missing capability.

The right amount of support is therefore dynamic.

Give enough support to make construction possible, but not so much that the support permanently performs the operation the learner is meant to acquire.

The Need for a Prompt Is Itself a Sensor

The Curie Series turns prompting into evidence.

Instead of merely recording correct or wrong, we can notice:

  • no prompt needed;
  • orientation prompt needed;
  • method prompt needed;
  • step-by-step prompting needed;
  • error-detection prompt needed;
  • or full modelling needed.

We do not need to turn this into a complicated score. The qualitative distinction is often enough to understand where independence currently ends.

Repeated Prompt Need Matters More Than One Prompt

Everyone needs help sometimes.

A prompt in a new topic may be exactly right.

The more informative pattern is when the same capability repeatedly requires the same external cue after teaching and practice.

That can suggest:

  • the prerequisite remains weak;
  • retrieval is not stable;
  • the learner recognises the method only after classification is supplied;
  • the explanation did not become a usable internal representation;
  • or the practice never included independent orientation.

The Evidence Loop then helps us distinguish these possibilities.

Prompt Dependence Across Subjects

English

A learner answers an inference question only after the tutor asks, “Which sentence gives you the clue?” The answer may be correct, but evidence-location is still externally cued. The next developmental job is to internalise that question.

Mathematics

A student can solve the equation after being told which method applies. Execution may be stable while classification and method selection remain dependent.

Science

A learner gives a strong explanation after the tutor asks for the observation, then the evidence, then the mechanism. The reasoning chain exists, but the learner may not yet initiate it independently.

Additional Mathematics

A learner handles differentiation once the chapter is obvious but struggles inside a mixed paper where the method must be recognised from structure. The mathematical procedure is present; route selection still needs to move inside the learner.

Tutorial Needs Deliberate Diagnostic Silence

Inside a Tutorial, the adult sometimes needs to remain quiet long enough to see what the learner actually does.

This silence can feel inefficient.

The teacher could solve the blockage faster.

But immediate rescue can erase useful evidence. Does the learner reread? Draw something? Check an example? Try a different representation? Notice the error? Give up immediately?

The room becomes informative when the learner is given enough ownership to reveal the current structure.

Why a Three-Student Tutorial Can Help Reveal Independence

In a three-student class, the teacher cannot hover over every learner every second.

That can be educationally useful.

While one learner receives direct attention, another has to orient independently. The tutor can later inspect what happened during that space: where the learner started, where they stopped, what they tried and what they did without help.

Small-group structure can therefore create both support and carefully bounded independence inside the same Tutorial.

What Tutor Should Show

The Tutor dashboard does not need a secret dependence score.

Reader-safe language is enough:

  • Independent: begins and continues without external route cues.
  • Lightly supported: one cue restores the route.
  • Guided: several prompts are still needed.
  • Modelled: the process still needs to be shown before the learner can reproduce it.

These are temporary learning descriptions, not identities.

Voyage Changes How Much Support Is Appropriate

The Voyage Series gives the prompt developmental meaning.

A young learner may appropriately need much more modelling and adult regulation. As the learner moves through Primary and Secondary school, more of the planning, checking, retrieval and route selection should gradually transfer inward.

So the aim is not “zero prompts as soon as possible.”

It is developmentally appropriate transfer of responsibility.

Darwin Asks Why the Prompt Became Necessary

Sometimes prompt dependence appears because the learner is genuinely missing a foundation.

Sometimes the environment changed.

The Darwin Series asks whether a previously adequate strategy stopped working because the new stage demands more abstraction, transfer or independent choice.

That distinction matters. Repeating the old prompt forever is not adaptation.

What Parents Can Do at Home

Parents often help because they can see the child is stuck.

One useful change is to delay the answer and reduce the size of the cue.

  1. Ask the child to show where they became uncertain.
  2. Ask what they already know about the problem.
  3. Offer one orientation question rather than the next step.
  4. Let the child continue.
  5. Later ask whether they can do a similar task without the same cue.

This keeps help available while preserving ownership.

Boundaries

  • Needing help does not mean a learner is weak.
  • New material naturally requires more scaffolding.
  • Prompt fading should be gradual when the capability is still forming.
  • Emotional reassurance is not the same as supplying an academic answer.
  • Ordinary educational prompt patterns should not be turned into unsupported medical or psychological claims.

The RFE of Prompt Dependence

Use support to construct capability, then reduce the support carefully enough to discover whether the learner can now recreate the missing operation independently.

How do I know whether a prompt is helping or creating dependence?

Watch the direction over time. Helpful scaffolding should make the same cue less necessary as the capability stabilises.

Should a tutor let a student struggle?

Only when the struggle is educationally useful. Diagnostic space can reveal what the learner owns, but prolonged confusion without a plausible route is not automatically productive.

What is the strongest sign that prompt dependence has reduced?

The learner begins, selects, checks or recovers independently in a similar but not identical task, without waiting for the familiar external cue.
