What We Build in Primary 1 Discovery Science
Careful Observation
Young children are naturally observant, but scientific observation is more deliberate. We ask: what can you actually see, hear, feel or measure? Which detail changed? Which detail stayed the same? Can you describe it without immediately guessing why?
Comparison
Comparison teaches the child to use a basis. Instead of “these are different”, we ask: different in what way? Colour, texture, size, shape, material, movement or another observable feature?
Classification
Classification is an early reasoning skill. The child learns that a group needs a rule and that the rule should work consistently. If we group objects by material, colour is not the deciding property. If we group by whether something is living, we need observations that support that decision.
Prediction
A prediction is not merely a guess. We encourage the child to say what they think will happen and give a simple reason. Later, formal Science will ask students to connect predictions to evidence and concepts; P1 can begin with the habit of reasoning before the result is known.
Explanation in Complete Sentences
Science eventually depends on language. We help children move from one-word answers to simple explanations: “I put these together because they are both made of metal,” or “I think this will move farther because the push was stronger.” Precision grows gradually.

What We Do Not Want
We do not want Primary 1 Discovery Science to become a race through Primary 3 chapters. We do not want long lists of keywords memorised without experience. We do not want model answers before the child has anything meaningful to explain.
The early years should preserve the child’s willingness to ask “why?” while gently improving the quality of the observation and the explanation.
Why Three Students?
A small group is particularly useful for Discovery Science because children reveal their reasoning aloud. One child may classify an object by colour; another by material. The tutor can ask both to explain the rule, compare the choices and test whether the rule still works with a new object.
The activity remains social and curious, but there is enough visibility to hear each child’s reasoning rather than only watch the group produce an answer.
