Springdale Primary School began operations in January 2013, according to its official history. Its first-year archive adds something especially useful: examples of what pupils were doing as the school community took shape. Bilingual storytelling and a Primary One artwork give the founding year a human scale beyond the date on a timeline.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Starting points and dated milestones

1. Beginning in January 2013

The school’s history places the operational start in January 2013 and records Mrs Lee-Koh SC as its first principal, serving from 2013 to 2018. It describes a commitment to working with parents and community partners.

A school begins with people as well as premises. For a local-history notebook, identify the operational year and early leadership, then look for dated records that show how pupils participated in that first year.

2. A first-year storytelling record

Springdale’s 2013 archive records a Primary One pupil’s participation in the National Bilingual Storytelling Competition on 27 July 2013. The account identifies NLB and the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism as organisers.

That gives a concrete example of learning beyond an ordinary lesson during the school’s first year. It is a historical participation record, not a current competition announcement or a promise of identical opportunities today.

3. Primary One art reaches an exhibition

The same archive records a group of Primary One pupils creating Our Kaleidoscopic World for the Singapore Youth Festival 2013 Art Exhibition. Its explanation connects the work with a world of different cultures and races.

An artwork can preserve the questions young pupils were exploring at a particular time. You do not need to reproduce the image to discuss the idea: ask how colour, pattern and different viewpoints might help communicate diversity.

4. Combining milestones with pupil experiences

The official history supplies the beginning; the dated archive supplies examples of school life. Reading both gives a fuller introduction than a founding date alone.

For a family exercise, make one timeline entry and one short activity note for 2013. Keep the source and year beside each. Check the school’s present official information for visits, admissions and programmes; the first-year archive describes the past.
