Seng Kang Secondary School was established on 4 January 1999. Its official history identifies it as the first secondary school in the Sengkang housing estate and records an initial temporary home before the move to 10 Compassvale Lane. An anchor in its crest provides another link with the neighbourhood’s harbour past.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Beginnings and campus journey

1. A new secondary-school community

Back to contents

The school began with 283 students in seven Secondary One classes, led by first principal Mdm Ng Shok Yan. Its history records four heads of department and ten teachers at the start.

These are founding-year figures, not a current profile. They help us picture the scale of the first intake and the people who began building a school culture in the growing estate.

2. From temporary premises to Compassvale Lane

Back to contents

The school initially used the former Hai Sing Girls’ High premises at 1192 Upper Serangoon Road. Its history says it remained there until 12 March 1999 before moving to the Compassvale Lane site.

A temporary campus is part of the history, even if it occupied only a short period. In your notes, attach the operational beginning to January 1999 and identify the March transition separately.

3. The official opening in 2001

Back to contents

The official-opening ceremony took place on 14 July 2001, officiated by then Minister for Information and the Arts Lee Yock Suan. The school’s account recalls student projects and an Arts Fiesta among the celebrations.

That ceremony marked a public milestone after teaching had already begun. A timeline that separates establishment, campus move and official opening tells a clearer story than a single date labelled “opened”.

4. An anchor that connects school and place

Back to contents

The school explains its crest’s anchor through Sengkang’s former harbour identity and its own commitment to its beliefs. It describes the anchor and rope as combining to form the school’s initials.

Try reading the crest as a small historical document: identify the shape, read the official explanation and connect it to the place name. Use the school’s published material for this exercise; do not assume campus access. Current learning opportunities and admissions are separate enquiries.
