North Vista Secondary School’s history reaches back to 1956, well before its Sengkang name. The school’s official account follows earlier identities through Thomson Secondary School to the relocation on 15 December 2000, when the English name became North Vista. The move changed its setting while retaining a link with its past.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Beginnings and campus journey

1. The earlier names

Back to contents

The school traces its beginnings to Gan Eng Seng Government Chinese Middle School in 1956 and the name Thomson Government Chinese Middle School in 1958. It records a Thomson Road campus and the later merger with Thomson Vocational School to form Thomson Secondary School.

Names make this timeline easier to follow, but they need careful labels. An earlier institutional name is not a reason to assume that another school with a similar name shares every part of this history.

2. The Sengkang move in December 2000

Back to contents

The official history dates Thomson Secondary’s relocation to Sengkang Town to 15 December 2000. It records the new English name, North Vista Secondary School, and Lim Lai Chuan as its first principal under that name.

That is a relocation and renaming milestone, rather than the beginning of the entire institutional story. The distinction explains why a school in a newer town can have a history stretching back several decades.

3. A name carried forward

Back to contents

The school says the Chinese name 德新中学 was retained to preserve historical links. It dates North Vista’s official opening to 8 July 2003, with then Education Minister Teo Chee Hean attending.

Here, continuity appears in both language and chronology: an older name remained, while a new campus had its own opening. A student can place the English and Chinese names beside the timeline to see what changed and what was carried forward.

Begin with the school’s published photographs and historical account. Choose one early image and one later image, and note what the captions actually establish about the date, place and people shown.

This is a useful way to explore Sengkang’s history without assuming everything in the neighbourhood began at the same time. For visits, programmes or admissions, consult current official arrangements. Historical photographs are a route into the story, not an invitation to enter school grounds.
