Chapters 3–4: Connections and exploring
NLB’s historical account describes a first section between the PIE and Elias Road opening in 1987, followed by the section to Lorong Halus in June 1989. The final phase extended the connection towards the SLE and CTE junction.
That is why 1996 should not be read as the first day anyone used any part of the TPE. A road can have several opening milestones as its reach grows.
The NLB account dates completion of the original expressway construction to 1996. Its final phase included bridges across Sungei Serangoon and Sungei Punggol.
Rivers are helpful clues when reading a transport map. A line drawn across water represents a real engineering connection, not just ink. For a child learning geography, locating the rivers can make the route easier to understand.
NLB’s 2018 expressway overview identifies Sengkang among the housing estates served by the TPE. Its significance therefore extends beyond the estate in its name.
Our interpretation is that neighbourhood history becomes richer when it includes outward connections. Homes and local amenities explain daily life within a town; regional roads help explain how that town fits into a larger network.
Trace the TPE on a map and identify the rivers and expressways named in the historical account. Then compare that regional route with a local street or a pedestrian journey. They solve different movement problems.
Use current navigation and transport information when planning a real trip. This article is a historical introduction, not a driving guide. Observe road infrastructure from lawful public places, and keep learning activities away from expressway carriageways.
