LTA announced the first two of 25 new third-generation two-car vehicles, made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Mihara, Japan. The initial deployment was on Punggol’s East and West loops, with performance monitoring before broader weekday operation.
That location matters. A milestone for the combined Sengkang–Punggol system should not be retold as proof that those first vehicles immediately ran on a particular Sengkang loop.
The announcement described clearer passenger-information screens, LED lighting, door-closing light strips and improved air-conditioning. It also identified inter-car doors intended to support evacuation.
For a young observer, this is an approachable design question: what information does a passenger need, and when? Finding a stop, understanding a warning and moving comfortably all depend on details inside the vehicle.
The 2025 release said the remaining new vehicles would arrive and enter service progressively after testing. It set out a planned fleet of 33 two-car vehicles by the end of 2028, including retained second-generation vehicles.
The 2028 figure was a target in that announcement, not a completed outcome in 2025. Fleet renewal is a sequence of manufacture, delivery, testing and deployment. Keeping those steps separate helps explain why change takes time.
On an ordinary journey, notice the information displays and warning signals without obstructing other passengers. Afterwards, discuss which feature was most useful and why. There is no need to seek out a particular vehicle to ask a good design question.
