Pei Hwa Secondary School was established in January 2005 and officially opened on 28 July 2007. Its Sengkang story also reaches into an older educational tradition through the Pei Hwa Foundation and the former Pei Hwa Public School. The connection is one of inspiration and alumni support, with each institution’s dates kept distinct.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Origins and milestones

1. The older educational inspiration

Back to contents

The school’s “Our Inspiration” page traces Hwa Keow School to a Yio Chu Kang village setting in 1934 and records the Pei Hwa Public School name in 1936. The older school ceased operations in 1990; its alumni subsequently formed the Pei Hwa Foundation.

That is why the earlier dates should not be presented as the founding year of today’s secondary school. An educational legacy can be carried forward through people, names and support while a later institution has its own beginning.

2. January 2005 and July 2007

Back to contents

Pei Hwa’s “Our Story” page records establishment in January 2005, followed by the official opening on 28 July 2007. During that ceremony, a time capsule was sealed with early school memorabilia, including a uniform, handbook, school-song score and newsletter.

A time capsule turns everyday school objects into future historical evidence. Imagine choosing only four objects to explain your own school years: which would tell a future reader how students dressed, learned, communicated and belonged?

3. Preserving neighbouring history

Back to contents

The official account says the school launched the Jalan Kayu Heritage Trail as part of its opening. It also describes later place-based learning at Punggol River, connecting learning with the surrounding environment.

This gives the school a place in neighbourhood history in two ways: it has a story of its own, and it has helped students investigate nearby places. Reading a community can become part of learning rather than something reserved for a distant museum.

4. How to explore the story today

Back to contents

Start with the school’s history pages and distinguish established milestones from future plans. Its published account proposes opening the capsule during the silver jubilee in 2030; that remains a planned event rather than an event already completed.

Check current school announcements for visits, programmes and any future capsule arrangements. For a family discussion, compare the older public school, the Foundation and the secondary school: what did each contribute to keeping an educational tradition alive?
