CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent began in 1938, decades before its move to Sengkang in 2000. Its own 80th-anniversary publication follows the school from a rented Flower Road house through Hillside Drive to its newer campus. The school’s contact page lists its Sengkang address as 62 Sengkang East Way.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Origins and milestones

1. A small beginning in 1938

Back to contents

The anniversary history records a private school at Flower Road with 21 pupils, one IJ nun and two teachers. Following the war, it reopened in 1945 in a bungalow lent by a neighbour.

The modest scale makes the beginning easy to picture: a school community took shape in borrowed and rented spaces. Its later campus is one stage in that development, while the founding date belongs to the earlier institution.

2. The Hillside Drive chapter

Back to contents

The school’s account describes the move to 11 Hillside Drive, an initial wooden classroom building and a new two-storey block in 1954. It records the gradual phasing out of its primary section and its development into a fully secondary school by 1974.

Those changes show that school history includes more than relocation. The ages taught, classrooms used and organisation of learning can all change over time. Keep such milestones labelled so they remain understandable to readers unfamiliar with older school arrangements.

3. Moving to Sengkang and opening officially

Back to contents

The anniversary publication dates the Sengkang move to 2000 and the official opening to 2003. It also describes the introduction of a home-room arrangement in which teachers had assigned classrooms and students moved between them.

These are distinct events: the school could already be operating in its new home before an official-opening ceremony. A timeline with separate entries for 1938, 2000 and 2003 gives a clearer account than using “opened” for every stage.

4. A living school in the neighbourhood

Back to contents

The school’s history can be explored through its published material without entering its campus. For open houses, visits or enquiries, use its current official channels and follow the school’s arrangements.

For students, try comparing the earliest learning space with the later classroom model. What changed physically, and what might that change have meant for a school day? This is a historical introduction; current admissions, subjects and programmes should be checked separately.
