eduKateSengkang · Neighbourhood history
Follow the local story
Compassvale’s mosaic murals bring Sengkang’s fishing heritage into everyday residential spaces. PA’s neighbourhood guide identifies sea-creature murals around Blocks 244–256 Compassvale Street. NLB also documents a dolphin mosaic at Block 266D Compassvale Bow in a photograph dated 2025—an example at a separate address.

PA describes the Compassvale Street murals as references to the area’s fishing-village past. Their residential setting matters: people can encounter a reminder of local history during ordinary journeys through the neighbourhood.
Rather than beginning with a long timeline, begin with a shape. What creature can you recognise? What details make it recognisable? A visual clue can open a conversation about the older landscape behind today’s housing estate.
NLB’s 2026 BiblioAsia account explains that HDB used a “Town of the Seafarer” theme, incorporating marine motifs into Sengkang’s infrastructure. It places void-deck sea-creature mosaics alongside other design references to fishing and marine life.
That does not make every depicted animal a record of a local catch. These are designed references to heritage. The useful connection is between a town’s remembered past and the visual vocabulary chosen for its newer streets and buildings.

3. Two addresses, two kinds of evidence
Keep Compassvale Street and Compassvale Bow distinct in your notes. PA gives a block range for the former; NLB supplies a dated dolphin-mural photograph for the latter. Neither cited account provides a complete installation chronology for every mosaic.
A photograph dated 2025 tells us when that image was taken, not necessarily when the mural was created. That small distinction helps students avoid turning an image caption into a false construction date.
CHAPTER 4 OF 4 · Local connections and learning
4. A considerate neighbourhood art walk
If you look for the murals, use public access routes and respect residents’ space. Keep lift lobbies and walkways clear, avoid photographing homes or identifiable residents without permission, and follow current signs.
Try making a small illustrated record: block number, street name, creature and observation date. Finish with one sentence explaining how the motif connects with the documented seafaring theme. The best result is a careful local observation, even if you only find one example.
