How to Learn Advanced English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.007 | Speak Clearly With Intelligibility, Stress, Rhythm and Intonation | 第007课:用可懂度、重音、节奏与语调说清英语

Series ID: EDKS-ADV-ZH-0007 · How to Learn Advanced English (Chinese Edition) · Lesson No.007 · C1 → C2

Speak Clearly With Intelligibility, Stress, Rhythm and Intonation | 用可懂度、重音、节奏与语调说清英语

Advanced pronunciation is not the art of hiding where you come from. It is the art of making meaning easy to receive.

高级发音,不是把自己的语言背景“藏起来”。真正的目标,是让别人更容易接收到你的意思。

A learner can know excellent vocabulary, use sophisticated grammar and construct strong arguments, yet still make communication unnecessarily difficult if key sounds disappear, word stress shifts unpredictably, important words receive no prominence, long sentences are not divided into thought groups, or intonation signals a stance different from the one intended.

一个学习者可以词汇很好、语法高级、论证也很清楚,但如果关键辅音消失、单词重音不稳定、重点词没有突出、长句没有意群分组、语调传递出错误立场,听者仍然可能需要付出很大努力才能理解。

So this lesson does not ask, “How can I sound native?”

It asks better questions:

  • Can the listener identify my words easily?
  • Can the listener tell which information is important?
  • Can the listener hear where one idea ends and another begins?
  • Can the listener distinguish my certainty, contrast, politeness and stance?
  • Can I remain clear across different topics, speeds and audiences?

所以,本课的核心不是“像不像某个母语者”,而是:

我的声音系统,能不能稳定地把意义送到对方那里?

Before we begin: pronunciation is now its own controlled system | 开始之前:发音需要独立系统

Lesson 005 trained the ear to hear fast English. Lesson 006 trained real-time speaking. Lesson 007 isolates the pronunciation layer so that speech remains intelligible while the learner is also thinking, interacting and planning.

第 005 课训练“听见真实语流”,第 006 课训练“实时表达”。第 007 课把发音独立出来,让它在你同时思考、互动和规划时仍然稳定。

Existing eduKate pages remain canonical owners for school-stage oral work and general oral communication:

1. The target is intelligibility | 第一目标:可懂度

The Council of Europe revised its phonological competence descriptors to move away from an unrealistic native-speaker model. The newer framework emphasises overall phonological control, sound articulation and prosodic features such as stress, rhythm and intonation, with intelligibility as a central concern.

CEFR 新版 phonological competence 的重要变化,是不再把“母语者口音”当作唯一标准,而是关注:

  • overall phonological control
  • sound articulation
  • stress
  • rhythm
  • intonation
  • intelligibility

这对全球英语学习者非常重要。你的目标不是消灭身份,而是减少不必要的理解成本。

2. Intelligibility, comprehensibility and accent are not the same | 可懂度、理解难度、口音不是同一个概念

TermQuestion中文版
IntelligibilityDid the listener correctly identify the message/words?听者到底听对没有?
ComprehensibilityHow much effort did understanding require?听懂有多费力?
AccentednessHow different does the speech sound from a particular reference accent?口音差异有多明显?

A speaker can have a noticeable Mandarin-influenced accent and still be highly intelligible. Another speaker can imitate surface features of an accent but remain difficult to follow because stress and information grouping are unstable.

所以:“有口音”不等于“说不清”。

3. Pronunciation should protect meaning, not identity performance | 发音训练先保护意义,不做身份表演

Ask:

  • Which sound differences change words?
  • Which errors repeatedly make listeners ask for repetition?
  • Which stress errors hide familiar vocabulary?
  • Which intonation habits cause unintended tone?

Do not spend equal time on every detectable accent feature.

高级训练必须有优先级。

4. Build a baseline recording first | 先做发音基线录音

Record four tasks:

  1. one minute reading aloud
  2. two minutes spontaneous speaking
  3. one technical/professional paragraph
  4. one interaction with another speaker if possible

Why four?

Because pronunciation can look strong in careful reading but weaken in spontaneous speech.

一个人在 reading aloud 里发音非常清楚,不代表实时交流中仍然能保持相同控制。

5. Diagnose listener problems, not only “wrong sounds” | 诊断听者遇到的困难,不只找“发错音”

Listener symptomPossible source
asks “what word?”segment / word stress
understands words but loses sentencethought grouping / prominence
misreads attitudeintonation / stance
hears one word as anothercontrast, final consonant or vowel
speech sounds rushedweak chunking / insufficient prominence
speech sounds unusually heavytoo many equally stressed syllables

6. Do not begin with every English phoneme | 不要一开始把所有音素重新学一遍

A C1 learner usually does not need a beginner course from /p/ to /z/ unless diagnosis shows a broad problem.

Start from repeated communication failures.

例如,如果听者总把你的 rice 听成 lice,这就是值得修的 contrast。如果某个极少使用的词里有一个不完美元音,但从不影响理解,它的优先级可以低很多。

7. Mandarin-speaking learners are not one pronunciation type | 中文母语学习者不是同一种发音模型

Mandarin is itself diverse by region, individual history, bilingual background and exposure. Learners also differ in age of acquisition, schooling, other languages and English input.

所以不要看到“中国学习者”就自动假设每个人都有完全一样的问题。

Use common cross-linguistic patterns only as a watchlist, then confirm them with actual speech.

8. A useful Mandarin→English watchlist | 一个实用中英发音观察表

Possible areas worth checking include:

  • /r/–/l/ distinctions for some speakers
  • /v/–/w/ distinctions for some speakers
  • /θ/ and /ð/
  • final consonants
  • consonant clusters
  • plural /s, z, ɪz/ endings
  • past /t, d, ɪd/ endings
  • English lexical stress
  • reduction of unstressed syllables
  • sentence-level prominence

但每一个都必须用真实录音确认,不做先验贴标签。

9. Final consonants can carry grammar | 词尾辅音常常带语法意义

Final consonants are not only pronunciation details.

They can carry:

  • plural: book / books
  • third-person agreement: work / works
  • past: walk / walked
  • lexical identity: rice / rise

If final consonants disappear, both vocabulary and grammar can become harder to hear.

10. Do not add a vowel to every final cluster | 词尾辅音群不要自动加元音

Learners sometimes make clusters easier by inserting a vowel:

asked → something like ask-ed when the intended form has a more compressed ending.

But do not overcorrect by forcing an unnatural cluster at full speed immediately.

Build:

  1. final consonant
  2. short word
  3. word + following vowel
  4. phrase
  5. spontaneous sentence

11. Clusters are better trained in useful words | 辅音群要放进高频词训练

Train words relevant to your life:

  • asked
  • tasks
  • projects
  • months
  • world
  • strengths

不要把大量时间花在没有实际使用价值的舌头体操上。

12. /θ/ and /ð/ matter—but priority depends on intelligibility | th 音重要,但优先级取决于理解影响

Words such as think, three, this, those are high frequency. If your substitutions repeatedly cause misunderstanding, targeted work is justified.

Use three levels:

  • sound in isolation
  • high-frequency word
  • phrase: I think that… / those three things

最终必须回到句子和互动。

13. /r/ and /l/ should be trained as meaning contrasts | /r/ 和 /l/ 要当“词义区别”训练

Do not practise only tongue position.

Practise lexical contrasts:

  • right / light
  • road / load
  • correct / collect

Then move into phrases and spontaneous speech.

14. /v/ and /w/ can create lexical ambiguity | /v/ 和 /w/ 可能造成词义混淆

  • vine / wine
  • vest / west

But again: diagnose first. Some learners have no meaningful difficulty here.

15. Vowel length alone is not the full system | 元音不能只按“长短”理解

English vowel contrasts involve quality as well as duration.

For example:

  • ship / sheep
  • full / fool

If you reduce the difference to “one is longer”, the acoustic model may remain incomplete.

16. Use minimal pairs selectively | Minimal pairs 选择性使用

Minimal pairs are useful when a specific contrast causes confusion.

But pronunciation should not become 45 minutes of disconnected pair drilling.

Use:

  1. hear the contrast
  2. produce the contrast
  3. recognise in words
  4. use in phrases
  5. use in spontaneous speaking

17. Perception comes before stable production for many learners | 很多时候先听出差别,才更容易稳定说出

If two sounds are not reliably distinguished in perception, production practice can become guesswork.

Lesson 005 already built listening diagnosis. Reuse it:

hear → identify → produce → record → compare.

18. Record word stress as part of the word | 单词重音是词汇的一部分

Do not store:

analysis = 分析

Store:

a-NA-ly-sis + audio + phrase.

Word stress affects both recognition and intelligibility.

19. Chinese EFL research repeatedly identifies stress challenges | 中国 EFL 研究长期发现重音是高价值难点

Research on Chinese EFL learners has reported difficulties including misplaced lexical stress and insufficient acoustic contrast between stressed and unstressed syllables.

这非常重要,因为英语重音不是“把那一拍说大声一点”这么简单。重读音节可能在:

  • duration
  • pitch movement
  • vowel quality
  • intensity

多个维度上更突出。

20. Unstressed syllables matter as much as stressed ones | 非重读音节和重读音节一样重要

If every syllable remains equally full and equally prominent, English rhythm can become heavy and word recognition can become harder.

高级训练不只是“把重音说重”,还要学会让非重读音节自然减弱。

21. Word families may shift stress | 词族会移动重音

  • PHOtograph
  • phoTOGraphy
  • photoGRAPHic

Never assume a derived word keeps the same stress.

22. Suffixes can influence stress patterns | 后缀会影响重音

Advanced vocabulary learning should notice families containing endings such as:

  • -ic
  • -ity
  • -tion
  • -graphy
  • -ical

Do not memorise a giant rule table first. Notice high-frequency families in your own vocabulary.

23. Stress errors can hide advanced words you already know | 重音错,会让“熟词变生词”

If the stressed syllable shifts unpredictably, a listener may need extra processing even when every consonant and vowel is recognisable.

高级词汇必须拥有声音版本。

24. Sentence stress is information architecture | 句子重音是信息建筑

Compare:

We need the FINAL report.

WE need the final report.

We NEED the final report.

The words remain the same. The information focus changes.

25. Prominence tells the listener where to look | Prominence 告诉听者“哪里最重要”

A listener cannot give equal attention to every syllable. The speaker helps by highlighting important information.

Prominence often falls on:

  • new information
  • contrast
  • correction
  • key content

26. New information and given information sound different | 新信息与旧信息通常突出程度不同

Question:

Who approved the proposal?

Answer:

SARAH approved it.

The new information is Sarah.

If the question is:

What did Sarah approve?

Answer:

Sarah approved the PROPOSAL.

语法一样,信息焦点不同。

27. Contrastive stress is a precision tool | 对比重音是精准工具

I said FIFTEEN, not fifty.

We need the OLD version, not the new one.

在真实工作、数字、日期和纠错场景里,重音能直接减少误解。

28. Do not stress every content word equally | 不要把每个实词都读得一样重

A sentence with five equally strong stresses can sound harder to process than one with a clear hierarchy.

高级口语要有“重点中的重点”。

29. Function words often become weaker | 功能词通常更弱

Words such as:

  • a
  • the
  • to
  • of
  • and
  • can

often reduce when unstressed.

Do not force every function word into a full dictionary form during fluent speech.

30. But do not swallow words deliberately | 但不要故意“吞音”

Reduction is a natural consequence of stress and rhythm, not a performance trick.

If the listener misses important grammar, you have reduced too far.

31. Rhythm grows from relative prominence | 节奏来自“相对突出”,不是绝对快慢

Classroom descriptions sometimes call English “stress-timed”. Real speech is more variable than a simple label suggests.

Use a practical definition:

English rhythm depends heavily on how prominent syllables and weaker syllables are organised across thought groups.

这比死背“每个重音之间时间完全一样”更准确。

32. Speak in thought groups | 用意群说话

Sentence:

Although the first option is cheaper / I’d still choose the second / because it is more reliable.

Thought groups make syntax and reasoning audible.

意群就是把“句法结构”变成听得见的结构。

33. Thought-group boundaries should match meaning | 意群边界要跟意义走

Bad grouping can distort:

Let’s eat / Grandma.

vs

Let’s eat Grandma.

The comic example is extreme, but the principle is real: grouping controls interpretation.

34. Long sentences need hierarchy, not breathlessness | 长句需要层级,不需要一口气冲完

Advanced speakers sometimes believe that pausing makes them sound less fluent.

The opposite can be true.

Well-placed pauses improve comprehensibility and allow important information to stand out.

35. Use slashes when practising | 练习时可以用斜线标意群

Mark:

The evidence suggests / that the policy may help in the short term / but the long-term effect remains uncertain.

Then remove the written marks and reproduce the grouping spontaneously.

36. Intonation does not have one meaning per contour | 语调不是“一种线条 = 一种固定意思”

A falling tone does not always mean “finished”. A rising tone does not always mean “question”. Intonation interacts with grammar, discourse, stance and speaker intention.

所以不要把语调学成五条死公式。

37. Falling intonation often supports completion and certainty | 降调经常支持“完成感”和确定感

Examples may include:

  • final statements
  • firm decisions
  • completed list items at the end

But context still controls interpretation.

38. Rising intonation can signal openness | 升调经常表示“还没关上”

Possible functions:

  • yes/no question
  • checking
  • continuation
  • inviting response
  • uncertainty in some contexts

不要把升调只绑定到问号。

39. Fall-rise can carry qualification | 降升调常用于保留、修正或暗含“但是”

Example:

It’s GOOD…

with a fall-rise may imply: good, but not entirely good.

这种细微立场是 C1–C2 语用的一部分。

40. Intonation can soften disagreement | 语调可以把反对变得更外交

Words:

I’m not sure I agree.

Prosody can make the line:

  • tentative
  • firm
  • irritated
  • polite

Lesson 002 handled register; pronunciation makes that register audible.

41. Intonation can accidentally sound rude | 语调可能让你“无意中听起来很冲”

A grammatically polite phrase can sound impatient if delivered with abrupt prominence and compressed timing.

所以礼貌不是只选 could you。声音也是关系的一部分。

42. Record the same sentence with four stances | 同一句话录四种立场

Sentence:

That’s interesting.

Produce:

  • genuine interest
  • polite acknowledgement
  • doubt
  • irony

Then ask a listener to identify them.

43. Prosody is meaning, not decoration | Prosody 不是装饰

The CEFR C2 descriptor explicitly connects prosodic control with conveying fine points of meaning.

到了 C2,语音韵律是精准表达系统的一部分。

44. Connected speech should emerge from fluency | 连读应该从流利中产生

Linking, assimilation and elision are important for listening and natural production, but do not turn them into an accent theatre performance.

先保证:

  • clear word identity
  • correct stress
  • thought grouping

Then allow connected speech to become more natural.

45. Linking can make speech smoother | 连读可以让语流更平滑

Practise phrases as units:

  • an idea
  • take it
  • turn it off
  • one of them

But never sacrifice clarity for “maximum linking”.

46. Contractions belong in ordinary advanced speech | 缩约属于正常高级口语

  • I’m
  • we’ve
  • they’d
  • it’s
  • can’t
  • wouldn’t

Using contractions appropriately can make spontaneous speech less stiff.

47. Weak forms belong to grammar and rhythm together | 弱读同时属于语法和节奏

Example:

I CAN do it. — contrast/emphasis.

I can DO it. — ordinary function-word reduction plus content prominence.

The same word can be strong or weak depending on meaning.

48. Do not imitate reduced speech you cannot perceive | 听不出来的弱化,不要急着模仿

Perception first. Then production.

If you imitate a blurred acoustic impression without understanding the structure, you may create unstable pronunciation.

49. Use transcript marking | 用文字稿标声音组织

Mark:

  • CAPS = prominence
  • / = thought-group boundary
  • underline = difficult segment
  • circle = reduced function word

Then shadow and reproduce without the text.

50. Shadowing should preserve meaning | Shadowing 要先理解,再模仿

Do not shadow incomprehensible audio.

Sequence:

  1. understand
  2. mark structure
  3. listen closely
  4. shadow
  5. record
  6. compare
  7. transfer to your own sentence

51. Shadowing is not accent copying | Shadowing 不是复制身份

Copy:

  • prominence
  • timing relationships
  • thought grouping
  • intonation function

Do not obsess over copying every regional vowel feature.

52. Reading aloud is useful—but limited | Reading aloud 有用,但不够

Reading aloud can train:

  • word stress
  • phrasing
  • pace
  • prosody

But it does not fully test spontaneous planning. Always add a no-script transfer task.

53. Read aloud, then paraphrase aloud | 朗读后立刻改述

Sequence:

  1. read paragraph aloud
  2. close text
  3. explain it in your own words

This forces pronunciation control to survive outside the written script.

54. Use sentence pairs to practise prominence | 用句子对练信息焦点

Question:

Did Sarah approve the old plan?

Answer 1:

No, MAYA approved it.

Answer 2:

No, Sarah approved the NEW plan.

Answer 3:

No, Sarah REJECTED it.

同一句框架,重点不同。

55. Use correction drills | 用纠错场景练对比重音

  • Tuesday, not Thursday.
  • Fifteen, not fifty.
  • The blue file, not the black one.

This is highly transferable to real work and study.

56. Use numbers and names | 数字和人名要单独练

High-stakes clarity includes:

  • 13 / 30
  • 14 / 40
  • 15 / 50
  • dates
  • addresses
  • names
  • reference numbers

Slow slightly when necessary. Communication is not a speed contest.

57. Spell when needed | 需要时直接拼写

Advanced communication includes repair strategies:

That’s Chen—C-H-E-N.

That’s fifteen, one-five.

清楚确认比“假装一次说对”更专业。

58. Use listener feedback | 用真实听者反馈

Ask listeners to mark:

  • words they misheard
  • phrases they had to reconstruct
  • places where focus was unclear
  • places where tone sounded unintended

Pronunciation should be evaluated through communication, not only self-perception.

59. Native-speaker feedback is not automatically superior | 母语者反馈也不是自动“最准”

Different listeners have different accent familiarity, expectations and tolerance. Use multiple listeners where possible.

Global English means your listener may be from Singapore, India, China, the UK, the US, Europe or elsewhere.

60. Train for global listeners | 为全球听者训练

Your speech should remain clear across listeners who do not share your exact linguistic background.

That makes:

  • key consonants
  • word stress
  • prominence
  • thought groups

especially valuable.

61. Do not overfit to one teacher’s accent | 不要只适应一个老师的口音

Pronunciation models should come from multiple speakers.

Choose a stable intelligibility target, not one celebrity voice.

62. Build a small pronunciation corpus | 建立个人发音语料库

TargetMy versionListener issueRepair
projectsfinal cluster weakheard “project”final /ts/ phrase drill
analysisstress misplacedrecognition slowa-NA-ly-sis + phrase
fifteenstress unclearheard fiftycontrast drill
polite disagreementintonation too abruptsounded irritatedstance recording

记录“听者出了什么问题”,比只记录 IPA 更有价值。

63. Prioritise recurring errors | 反复出现的问题才值得进入主课程

If one issue appears once, note it.

If it appears repeatedly across tasks, promote it into your next training cycle.

这就是第一弱点原则在 pronunciation 的应用。

64. The first weak link table | 发音第一个薄弱环节

SymptomLikely weak linkNext move
specific words repeatedly misheardsegment / lexical stresscontrast + phrase work

65. Train one sound inside one phrase | 一个音放进一个短语

Do not isolate forever.

Example target /θ/:

  1. three
  2. three things
  3. those three things
  4. I think those three things matter.

最后进入自己的句子。

66. Train one stress pattern inside one sentence | 一个重音放进一个句子

Target:

reLIAbility

Phrase:

system reliability

Sentence:

The main concern is system reliability.

然后把句子放进真实讨论。

67. Train one intonation function across many sentences | 一个语调功能,用多句训练

Function: polite reservation.

  • I’m not completely sure.
  • That might be difficult.
  • I can see the point, but…
  • I’d want to check the cost first.

不要只背一条“语调曲线”。

68. Slow practice is useful only if it returns to natural timing | 慢练必须最后回自然速度

Slow speech helps establish articulatory control.

But final practice should return to ordinary conversational timing.

否则你会只拥有“慢速正确发音”。

69. Overarticulation can be a temporary tool | 夸张发音可以暂时使用

Exaggerate a contrast briefly to feel the difference.

Then reduce the exaggeration into natural speech.

训练动作和真实沟通不是同一个版本。

70. Use mirror or camera only when it helps | 镜子和摄像头只是工具

Visual feedback may help for lip or tongue positioning, but do not turn pronunciation into facial performance.

最终标准仍然是声音和听者理解。

71. Use audio waveform/spectrogram tools sparingly | 声学工具选择性使用

Advanced learners sometimes enjoy seeing pitch, duration or waveform differences. These tools can help specific diagnoses, especially stress and timing.

But do not replace listening with graph watching.

72. Compare your recording with a model | 把自己的录音和范本比较

Compare:

  • where stress falls
  • where pauses occur
  • which words are weak
  • intonation movement

不要只问“我的声音像不像”。问“意义组织方式一样吗”。

73. Use model diversity | 用多个范本避免模仿过度

Listen to several proficient speakers expressing the same function.

You will discover that clear English has multiple legitimate pronunciations.

74. Pronunciation should survive emotional load | 发音要能经得住情绪和压力

People become less controlled when:

  • excited
  • angry
  • nervous
  • rushed
  • interrupted

Occasionally practise high-energy speaking so the system does not exist only in calm recording conditions.

75. Pronunciation should survive cognitive load | 发音要能经得住思考负荷

Discuss a difficult topic while monitoring only one pronunciation target.

Do not monitor six targets at once.

高级 automaticity 是逐步建立的。

76. Use a rotating focus | 用“轮换焦点”降低认知负担

Week 1: final consonants.

Week 2: lexical stress.

Week 3: thought groups.

Week 4: intonation.

Keep older targets on a light watchlist rather than making every task a full pronunciation exam.

77. Keep a watchlist, not an obsession list | 建立观察表,不要建立焦虑表

A known fragility should be monitored without becoming the centre of every conversation.

This aligns with eduKate’s broader watchlist principle: known weaknesses stay visible, but do not hijack the whole learning system.

78. Transfer from reading aloud to spontaneous speech | 从朗读迁移到即兴口语

Use the same phrase in three stages:

  1. read it
  2. say it from memory
  3. use it inside an unplanned answer

只有第三步才证明它进入实时系统。

79. Transfer from shadowing to your own voice | 从 shadowing 迁移到自己的声音

After shadowing:

  1. keep the meaning function
  2. change the vocabulary
  3. say a new sentence

你不是复制声音,而是在吸收声音组织规律。

80. Transfer from minimal pairs to conversation | 从 minimal pairs 迁移到对话

If you practise light/right, later discuss:

the right way to design a light system

The contrast must survive inside meaningful speech.

81. Intelligibility under speed | 语速提高时可懂度不能崩

Increase speed only after clarity is stable.

Measure whether:

  • final sounds disappear
  • stress flattens
  • thought groups vanish
  • listener effort increases

如果这些发生,速度超过当前控制能力。

82. Intelligibility under complexity | 句子变复杂时可懂度不能崩

Long sentences increase planning load.

Use:

  • clear clause boundaries
  • prominence on key terms
  • pauses at logical points

越复杂越要给听者路标。

83. Intelligibility under unfamiliar vocabulary | 生词多时更要保护重音

Technical words should be pronounced with stable lexical stress and introduced clearly.

If necessary:

  • slow the first mention
  • define it
  • repeat in normal flow

84. Names deserve special care | 人名地名要特别保护

Names often lack contextual predictability.

Say them clearly and spell when needed.

85. Presentation pronunciation is not conversation pronunciation | 演讲发音与聊天发音不同

Presentation speech often benefits from:

  • slightly wider thought groups
  • clearer prominence
  • more controlled pace
  • strong signposting

But avoid sounding mechanically over-rehearsed.

86. Conversation pronunciation must stay responsive | 对话发音要能实时响应

In interaction, you need:

  • rapid turn entry
  • clarification
  • contrast stress
  • repair
  • stance intonation

这和第 006 课直接连接。

87. Academic discussion pronunciation | 学术讨论的声音任务

You need to make distinctions audible:

  • correlation vs causation
  • possible vs probable
  • description vs evaluation
  • agreement vs reservation

Prosody helps listeners track intellectual structure.

88. Professional meeting pronunciation | 职场会议的声音任务

Protect:

  • numbers
  • deadlines
  • names
  • action owners
  • final decisions

重要信息可以刻意放慢、重读和确认。

89. Public-facing pronunciation | 面向公众时要减少听者负担

If speaking to a broad international audience:

  • avoid excessive speed
  • use clear grouping
  • repeat key terms
  • define jargon

高级演讲不是“展示自己能说多快”。

90. Accent identity can remain | 口音身份可以保留

A Singaporean, Chinese, Indian, British or American speaker can all be highly proficient English users.

Pronunciation teaching should increase communicative range, not demand cultural erasure.

91. Choose your own target accent exposure | 选择适合你生活的口音输入

If you live/work in Singapore, include Singapore English alongside international English.

If you study in the UK, increase UK exposure. If your company works heavily with India or the US, include those voices.

Your pronunciation listening model should match your world.

92. But keep global robustness | 但也要保持全球可迁移性

Do not become understandable only to one small speech community.

High-value global clarity includes:

  • word identity
  • stress
  • thought groups
  • meaningful intonation

93. A 20-minute daily pronunciation routine | 每天 20 分钟发音训练

TimeTask

96. Seven-day pronunciation cycle | 七天发音循环

  1. Day 1: diagnosed segment/final sound.
  2. Day 2: lexical stress.
  3. Day 3: prominence and new/given information.
  4. Day 4: thought groups and pace.
  5. Day 5: intonation and stance.
  6. Day 6: connected speech + shadowing.
  7. Day 7: spontaneous benchmark + listener feedback.

98. Monthly benchmark | 每月发音基准测试

Use the same four task types:

  1. 60-second reading
  2. 2-minute spontaneous answer
  3. 1-minute explanation with numbers/technical terms
  4. 3-minute interaction

Ask listeners to rate only communication-relevant dimensions:

  • word recognition
  • listener effort

Choose a 90-second spontaneous speaking task on a topic you know well.

选择一个你熟悉的话题,即兴说 90 秒。

Complete this chain:

  1. Record the first attempt.
  2. Ask a listener to mark any word or phrase that required extra effort.
  3. Choose only three high-impact pronunciation issues.
  4. For each issue, practise word → phrase → sentence.
  5. Mark the transcript for prominence and thought groups.
  6. Listen to one strong model for a similar communicative function.
  7. Shadow 20–30 seconds for stress, grouping and intonation.
  8. Hide the transcript.
  9. Speak again on the same topic, using your own words.
  10. Wait 48 hours and repeat without notes.

Then ask:

Did I sound less like myself?

That is not the main question.

Did the listener receive my meaning faster, with less effort and fewer repairs?

That is the question.

高级发音的终点,不是“没有口音”。是听者不需要为你的声音额外工作,就能把注意力放在你的思想上。
