How to Learn Advanced English (Chinese Edition) | 高级英语进阶学习

Your English may already be good. Now make it precise.
你的英语可能已经不错。现在,要让它更准确、更自然、更有力量。

You do not need to start again. You do not need to collect thousands of difficult words. You do not need to sound complicated.

你不需要从头开始。你不需要先背几千个“高级词汇”。你也不需要故意把英语说得复杂。

Advanced English is not English with more decoration. It is English with better control.

高级英语,不是“装饰更多的英语”。真正的高级,是控制更好:意思更清楚,用词更准确,语气更合适,句子更稳定,阅读更深入,表达更自然。

This course is for Mandarin Chinese speakers who can already use English but want to move toward strong C1 and C2 performance in study, work, reading, writing and serious conversation.

这套课程面向以普通话为主要语言、已经能够使用英语,但希望进一步达到高水平 C1–C2 能力的学习者。你可能需要英语来学习、工作、阅读复杂文本、写作、讨论问题、做演讲,或者只是希望自己的英语真正进入“高级使用”阶段。

Start with these four lessons | 先从这四课开始

Do these four lessons in order if you are not sure what to improve first. The language inside the lessons will be advanced, but the instructions will stay clear. Chinese will be used as a bridge when it helps.

如果你已经学了很多年英语,却不知道下一步应该练什么,请先按顺序学习这四课。课程内容会进入高级英语,但教学指令会保持清楚。需要时会用简体中文搭桥,但目标始终是让你逐渐直接使用英语。

What does “advanced English” mean? | “高级英语”到底是什么?

At an advanced level, the question is no longer only, “Is this sentence grammatically correct?” A sentence can be correct and still be weak. It may be vague. It may use the wrong register. It may contain an unnatural collocation. It may be too direct for the situation. It may hide the main idea. It may sound translated. It may be technically accurate but rhetorically clumsy.

到了高级阶段,问题不再只是“这句话语法对不对”。一句话可以语法完全正确,却仍然不够好。它可能太模糊,语域不合适,搭配不自然,语气过重,重点不清,像从中文翻译出来,或者虽然没有明显错误,却不符合英语真实使用习惯。

The Council of Europe’s CEFR describes C1 learners as able to understand demanding long texts, recognise implicit meaning, express ideas fluently, and use language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes. At C2, the learner can understand almost everything heard or read, combine information from different sources, and express fine shades of meaning with precision.

欧洲语言共同参考框架(CEFR)把 C1 描述为:能够理解较长、较难的文本,识别隐含意义,比较流畅地表达,并能在社会、学术和专业场合灵活使用语言。C2 更进一步:能轻松理解几乎所有听到或读到的内容,把不同来源的信息整合起来,并准确表达细微的意义差别。

That gives us a useful target. Advanced English is not a bag of “advanced words”. It is a system for understanding, choosing, combining and adapting language under real conditions.

所以,我们可以把目标说得更简单:高级英语不是一袋“高级单词”,而是一套在真实场景中理解、选择、组合和调整语言的能力。

The advanced-English gap | 为什么“英语已经不错”却还是上不去?

Many advanced learners reach a plateau. They can read news, watch videos, hold conversations and write essays. Yet progress becomes slow. This usually happens because the learning target has changed but the study method has not.

很多高级学习者都会遇到“平台期”。新闻基本能读,视频大多能听懂,日常交流没有大问题,作文也能写,但能力就是很难再上一个台阶。常见原因不是“你没有语言天赋”,而是学习目标已经变了,学习方法却还停留在中级阶段。

At beginner and intermediate levels, large gains come from learning common words, core grammar and useful sentence patterns. At advanced levels, improvement often comes from depth:

  • knowing which words naturally go together
  • hearing differences in tone and stance
  • recognising implication rather than only explicit meaning
  • choosing a formal, neutral or conversational register
  • controlling tense, aspect and reference across long stretches of text
  • compressing an idea without losing precision
  • expanding an idea without becoming repetitive
  • reformulating when the first expression is not exact
  • reading argument structure, not only vocabulary
  • using feedback to repair repeated personal errors

在初级和中级阶段,学常用词、核心语法和句型会带来明显进步。到了高级阶段,进步更多来自“深度”:你要学会词语怎样搭配、语气怎样变化、隐含意义怎样出现、正式和口语怎样切换、长段落中的时态和指代怎样保持稳定,以及怎样把复杂想法说得既简洁又准确。

Do not learn “hard words”; learn live English | 不要只学“难词”,要学真正活着的英语

An advanced learner may know the dictionary meaning of issue, approach, significant, substantial, critical, address, maintain and account. That is not enough. You also need to know what usually comes before and after the word, what tone it carries, which meanings are common in which fields, and what would sound strange.

高级学习者可能认识 issue、approach、significant、substantial、critical、address、maintain、account 这些词,也能说出中文意思。但这还不够。你还要知道它们通常跟什么词搭配,在不同领域里常用什么意思,语气偏正式还是口语,哪些组合自然,哪些虽然“每个词都对”,合在一起却很奇怪。

Compare:

  • big problem → correct, general
  • serious problem → common and natural
  • pressing problem → urgent and formal
  • persistent problem → continues over time
  • underlying problem → deeper cause beneath the visible issue

中文里都可能被粗略翻译成“问题很严重/很大”,但英语真正高级的地方在于,你能根据意思选择正确的搭配,而不是只寻找“更难的词”。

This is why advanced vocabulary learning should move from single words to collocations, chunks, connotation, register, grammatical pattern and discourse function.

因此,高级词汇学习要从“单词”升级到“搭配、词块、感情色彩、语域、语法搭配和篇章功能”。

A word has more than one kind of knowledge | 一个词,不只有“中文意思”

What you need to knowExample中文理解
Core meaningconduct = carry out核心意义
Collocationconduct research / conduct an investigation自然搭配
Grammar patterncapable of doing; responsible for doing语法搭配
Registerkids / children / minors口语、中性、正式或专业语域
Connotationslim vs skinny感情色彩
Discourse functionhowever, nevertheless, by contrast在篇章里做什么
Pronunciationrecord noun vs record verb stress发音与重音
Frequency and fieldrobust evidence; robust system常见领域与使用频率

If you only memorise “conduct = 进行”, you own a translation. If you can use conduct research, conduct an interview, conduct an investigation, understand its formal register and avoid unnatural combinations, you are beginning to own the English word.

如果你只背“conduct = 进行”,你拥有的是一个翻译。如果你知道 conduct research、conduct an interview、conduct an investigation,知道它偏正式,也知道哪些组合不自然,你才真正开始拥有这个英文词。

Mandarin is a bridge, not a template | 中文是桥,不是英语模板

Your first language is not an enemy. Mandarin gives you concepts, knowledge, memory, reasoning and a powerful way to compare systems. But English should not be built by making a Chinese sentence first and replacing each part with English.

中文不是敌人。普通话给你概念、知识、记忆、推理能力,也能帮助你比较两种语言。但是,高级英语不能靠“先造中文句子,再逐块换成英文”来完成。

Mandarin and English often package information differently. Mandarin can rely more heavily on context, topic continuity and lexical time expressions. English often marks information through articles, tense, agreement, explicit subjects, clause structure and grammatical reference. Research on Chinese learners of English has repeatedly shown that tense and aspect can remain difficult even at high proficiency because the two languages organise temporal information differently.

普通话和英语“包装信息”的方式经常不同。中文可以更多依靠语境、话题延续和时间词;英语常常需要通过冠词、时态、主谓一致、明确主语、从句结构和语法指代来表达关系。有关中国英语学习者的研究显示,即使水平较高,时态和体仍可能是难点,因为两种语言组织时间信息的方式不同。

1. Articles | 冠词

Chinese has no direct equivalent of the English article system. Advanced learners often know the rules but still make unstable choices in fast writing.

  • a problem — one non-specific countable problem
  • the problem — a problem already identifiable in the context
  • problems — plural general reference
  • information — uncountable in standard English, not “an information”

高级阶段不要只问:“这里要不要加 the?”要问:“听者是否已经能确定我指的是哪一个?这个名词在这里是可数、不可数,还是抽象类别?”

2. Tense and aspect | 时态与体

Chinese often expresses time with context, adverbs and aspect markers. English also grammaticalises time and viewpoint through verb forms. The advanced task is not merely choosing “past” or “present”. It is choosing how the speaker wants the event to be viewed.

  • I lived there for five years. — completed period
  • I have lived there for five years. — connects the period to now
  • I had lived there for five years before I moved. — locates one past period before another
  • I was living there when the policy changed. — background process around another event

高级学习者要把时态当作“意义系统”,而不是填空题规则。不要只记形式,要练习时间关系、说话视角和篇章连续性。

3. Subject and reference | 主语与指代

Mandarin can omit subjects when context keeps the topic clear. English usually requires an explicit grammatical subject. In long writing, English also expects reference chains to stay easy to follow.

中文在语境清楚时可以省略主语;英语通常需要明确的语法主语。写长文时,还要保证 he、she、it、this、that、these、those、which 等指代不会让读者迷路。

4. Topic vs sentence architecture | 话题结构与英语句子结构

Chinese can organise a sentence around a topic and then comment on it. English can also use topic structures, but formal English often expects a clearer grammatical relationship between subject, verb, complement and clause.

所以,不要只问“中文这句话怎么翻”。先问:“英语里最自然的主语是谁?动作是什么?信息重点在哪里?旧信息放在哪里?新信息放在哪里?”

Advanced grammar is meaning control | 高级语法不是更多规则,而是更好的意义控制

At C1–C2, grammar becomes a choice system. Different structures let you change emphasis, certainty, distance, politeness, time, responsibility and information flow.

到了 C1–C2,语法不再只是“对错系统”,而是一套“选择系统”。不同结构能改变重点、确定程度、距离感、礼貌程度、时间关系、责任归属和信息流。

Meaning jobExamples中文理解
Hedge a claimmay, might, appears to, tends to降低断言强度,避免说得过满
Increase commitmentclearly, demonstrates, strongly suggests提高立场强度
Shift focusWhat matters is… / It was X that…改变信息焦点
Distance the writerIt has been argued that…建立学术距离
Compress informationnoun phrases, participle clauses压缩复杂信息
Show relationshipalthough, whereas, despite, therefore明确逻辑关系

Do not study an advanced structure only as a form. Ask: “What meaning job does this structure do?”

不要只记结构形式。每学一个高级语法点,都问一句:“这个结构在意义上帮我完成什么任务?”

Collocation: the hidden engine of natural English | 搭配:自然英语的隐藏发动机

Advanced learners often have enough vocabulary to express an idea, but not enough collocational control to express it naturally. British Council materials for advanced learners emphasise that collocation is a key part of moving beyond intermediate English. Cambridge materials likewise treat collocation, register, connotation and style as central to vocabulary depth.

很多高级学习者不是“词不够”,而是“词不会一起工作”。英国文化教育协会和剑桥的高级英语资源都强调,搭配是从中级走向高级的重要部分。

  • make progress, not normally “do progress”
  • pose a threat, not usually “make a threat” when describing a risk
  • reach a conclusion, not “arrive a conclusion”
  • raise awareness, not “increase awareness” in every context
  • compelling evidence, mounting evidence, anecdotal evidence — different meanings and registers

Do not record only the target word. Record the phrase.

不要只记一个目标词。请把常见搭配一起记下来。

Register: choose English for the situation | 语域:根据场景选择英语

Advanced English changes with the situation. A message to a friend, a university essay, a workplace report, a presentation and a formal complaint should not sound the same.

高级英语会随着场景改变。给朋友发消息、写大学论文、写工作报告、做演讲、写正式投诉,不应该使用完全相同的语言。

IdeaConversationalNeutralFormal / academic
startkick offstartcommence / initiate
showpoint outshowdemonstrate / indicate
helpgive a handhelpfacilitate / support
big changehuge changemajor changesubstantial / significant change

“More formal” does not automatically mean “better”. The correct question is: “What does this situation need?”

“更正式”不等于“更高级”。真正高级的选择是:这个场景需要什么?

Reading: stop reading only for information | 阅读:不要只读“发生了什么”

At advanced level, reading is not only extracting facts. You must also read the writer.

  • What is the writer claiming?
  • What evidence supports the claim?
  • What assumptions are left unstated?
  • What does the writer treat as certain, probable or merely possible?
  • Which words reveal approval, doubt, distance or criticism?
  • What is excluded from the argument?
  • How does one paragraph change the meaning of the previous paragraph?
  • What is implied but not directly stated?

高级阅读,不只是找事实。你还要读出作者的立场、证据、假设、语气、隐含关系和篇章结构。

When you read an article, mark four things: claim, evidence, qualification, consequence.

读高级文章时,可以先标出四种信息:主张、证据、限制条件、后果

Listening: hear the language between the words | 听力:听见“单词之间”的英语

Advanced listening is not solved by knowing every word on a transcript. Real speech contains reduction, linking, stress, hesitation, reformulation and implied attitude.

高级听力不是把听力稿里的每个单词都背会就能解决。真实英语里有弱读、连读、重音、停顿、改口、修正和隐含态度。

  • Listen once for the main position.
  • Listen again for stressed words.
  • Notice where speakers slow down, correct themselves or add a qualification.
  • Compare the audio with the transcript.
  • Mark reductions and linking.
  • Shadow one short section.
  • Retell the idea in your own words.

不要把“听懂”理解成“每个词都听见”。真正的目标是:即使有词没听清,你仍然能跟上意思、立场、逻辑和变化。

Speaking: fluency is not speed | 口语:流利不等于说得快

Fast English can still be weak English. Advanced speaking is the ability to develop an idea, choose language quickly, repair yourself, adjust tone and remain precise under pressure.

说得快,不代表说得高级。高级口语是:你能把一个想法展开,快速找到合适语言,在表达不准确时自己修正,根据对象调整语气,并且在压力下仍保持意思清楚。

Useful advanced speaking moves include:

  • Framing: “The main issue is…”
  • Qualifying: “That is generally true, although…”
  • Reformulating: “Let me put that another way.”
  • Narrowing: “More specifically…”
  • Contrasting: “That said, the opposite can occur when…”
  • Conceding: “I accept that point, but…”
  • Checking precision: “By ‘efficient’, I mean…”

这些不是“高级句型表”。它们是思考动作的语言表达。学的时候,要把表达和它的功能一起学。

Writing: control the reader’s path | 写作:控制读者怎样理解你

Advanced writing is not a competition to make sentences longer. It is the art of making complex thought easy to follow.

高级写作不是“谁的句子更长”。它真正考验的是:你能不能把复杂思想写得让读者容易跟上。

A strong paragraph usually has a controlled path:

  1. Point — What is the paragraph doing?
  2. Development — Explain the mechanism or reasoning.
  3. Evidence / example — Give support.
  4. Qualification — Show limits or exceptions when necessary.
  5. Return — Connect the paragraph back to the larger argument.

一个强段落通常有清楚路径:观点 → 展开 → 证据或例子 → 必要的限制条件 → 回到全文主线。

Before editing grammar, ask whether the logic is visible. A perfectly grammatical paragraph can still fail if the reader cannot see how one sentence leads to the next.

修改语法之前,先检查逻辑是否可见。一个段落即使每句话语法都对,如果句与句之间的关系不清楚,仍然会失败。

Pronunciation: intelligibility, rhythm and information | 发音:重点是清晰、节奏与信息

Advanced pronunciation does not require erasing a Chinese accent. The goal is reliable intelligibility and control of the sound features that carry meaning.

高级发音的目标不是“消灭中国口音”。更重要的是稳定可懂,并学会控制那些会影响意义的声音特征。

  • final consonants
  • consonant clusters
  • vowel length and quality where contrast matters
  • word stress
  • sentence stress
  • weak forms
  • linking
  • thought groups
  • intonation for stance and contrast

Do not practise isolated sounds forever. Move from sound → word → phrase → sentence → real message.

不要永远停留在单个音素练习。要从“声音 → 单词 → 短语 → 句子 → 真实信息”逐步转移。

Use a corpus and a learner dictionary | 学会用语料库和高级学习词典

At advanced level, “Does this sentence sound right?” should not depend only on intuition. Check real usage.

到了高级阶段,“这句话听起来对不对”不应该完全靠感觉。你要学会查真实用法。

  1. Look up the word in a good learner dictionary.
  2. Read more than the first definition.
  3. Check grammar labels and example sentences.
  4. Notice collocations.
  5. Check whether the word is formal, informal, approving, disapproving or field-specific.
  6. Search authentic examples when uncertain.
  7. Record the full phrase, not only the word.
  8. Write one sentence connected to your own real life or field.
  9. Return to it later without looking.

一个高级学习者最有价值的习惯之一,就是从“查中文意思”升级到“查真实英语行为”。

The advanced vocabulary notebook | 高级词汇本应该怎么记?

FieldExample
Word / phraseraise concerns
Meaningcause people to become worried about an issue
中文引发担忧
Typical patternsraise serious concerns; raise concerns about
Registerneutral to formal
Contrastexpress concern / address concerns
Your sentenceThe new policy has raised concerns about access.
Sourcearticle, lecture, book, dictionary

这样记录,比“concern = 担心”强得多。你的目标不是让单词本变厚,而是让可用语言网络变密。

The first weak link at advanced level | 高级学习者也要找“第一个卡点”

Do not say only, “My English is not advanced enough.” Find the first place where performance breaks.

不要只说“我的英语还不够高级”。要找出表现最先在哪一步断掉。

SymptomLikely first weak linkRepair
I know many words but sound unnatural.Collocation / registerRecord chunks, compare authentic examples.
I read well but speak simply.Passive-to-active retrievalRetell, reformulate, repeated speaking.
I understand grammar tests but make errors in essays.Real-time grammar controlEdit personal error patterns in full paragraphs.
I understand facts but miss writer attitude.Stance / implicationAnnotate hedging, evaluation and contrast.
I can speak fluently but vaguely.PrecisionDefine terms, narrow claims, choose exact collocations.
I write long sentences that are hard to follow.Information structureControl clause hierarchy and sentence focus.
I forget new language after a week.Retrieval / spacingDelayed recall and spaced reuse.

Repair the earliest failure, then move forward. Do not attack ten symptoms at the same time.

先修最早出现的问题,再往后走。不要一次同时修十个症状。

A daily C1–C2 learning loop | 每日 C1–C2 学习循环

You do not need a three-hour session every day. You need repeated high-quality contact with difficult but understandable English.

你不需要每天学三小时。你需要的是:持续接触“有挑战但仍可理解”的高质量英语,并且反复提取和使用。

TimeTask中文
10 minRead or listen to one demanding text.读或听一份有挑战的材料。
5 minCollect 3–5 useful chunks.记录 3–5 个真正有用的词块。
5 minNotice one grammar or discourse pattern.观察一个语法或篇章模式。
10 minRetell or summarise without looking.不看原文复述或总结。
10 minWrite 100–150 words using the new language.用新语言写 100–150 词。
5 minCheck, correct and record one repeated error.检查并记录一个重复错误。

Forty-five focused minutes can be more useful than two hours of passive watching.

45 分钟高质量训练,往往比两小时被动刷视频更有效。

The input → notice → retrieve → transform → use loop | 输入不是终点

  1. Input — Meet good English in a real text.
  2. Notice — Identify a useful pattern, phrase or decision.
  3. Retrieve — Close the text and recall it.
  4. Transform — Change the topic, tense, audience or register.
  5. Use — Put it into your own speaking or writing.
  6. Feedback — Check what broke.
  7. Return — Use it again after a delay.

高级学习最常见的问题之一,是输入很多,输出很少。看了很多文章、视频和课程,却没有把语言真正提取出来使用。解决方法不是再加更多输入,而是给输入加上“注意、回忆、转换、使用、反馈、延时复习”。

Repeated speaking: one topic, three versions | 同一个话题,说三次

Choose one serious topic: education, technology, family, health, finance, work, cities, culture or science.

  1. Speak for two minutes. Record it.
  2. Listen. Find three weak places.
  3. Look up better collocations or framing language.
  4. Speak again, keeping the same core idea.
  5. Wait one day.
  6. Speak a third time without notes.

不要每次都换新题。高级流利度需要“重复同一任务但提高语言质量”。第一次主要完成意思,第二次修语言,第三次检查能否自动化。

Repeated writing: draft, diagnose, rebuild | 高级写作不要只“写完就算”

  1. Write the first draft quickly.
  2. Underline the main claim of every paragraph.
  3. Circle vague nouns: thing, issue, aspect, factor, situation.
  4. Check collocations around key words.
  5. Check tense and reference across the whole paragraph.
  6. Remove sentences that repeat without adding meaning.
  7. Add one qualification where the claim is too broad.
  8. Rewrite the weakest paragraph from memory.

高级写作能力不是靠“多写几篇”自动出现,而是靠“写 → 诊断 → 重建 → 再写”的循环形成。

Learn to paraphrase without losing meaning | 练习改写,但不要把意思改掉

Paraphrasing is a core advanced skill because it forces you to separate the idea from the original wording.

改写是高级英语的重要能力,因为它迫使你把“意思”和“原句形式”分开。

  • Change vocabulary but keep the claim.
  • Change sentence structure but keep logical relationships.
  • Change register for a different audience.
  • Compress a paragraph into one sentence.
  • Expand one sentence into a paragraph.
  • Explain the same idea to a child, a colleague and an expert.

如果改写后意思变了,那不是高级表达,而是意义失控。先保持意义,再追求风格。

Build a personal error corpus | 建立你自己的错误语料库

Advanced learners often repeat a small number of personal errors for years. General grammar study will not always remove them.

很多高级学习者多年反复犯同一小批错误。继续从头学一本通用语法书,不一定能解决。

Your sentenceRepairCategoryWhy
People can get many informations.People can get a lot of information.Countabilityinformation is uncountable
This policy will bring a big influence. This policy will have a major impact.Collocationhave an impact is natural here
Although it is useful, but it is expensive.Although it is useful, it is expensive.Clause linkingavoid double marking
Yesterday I go there.Yesterday I went there.TenseEnglish marks past time on the verb

Every week, sort your errors. Which category is growing? Which one is shrinking? That gives you a real curriculum.

每周给错误分类。哪一类还在增加?哪一类正在减少?这就是你的个人课程表。

The four-input rule | 高级输入要有四种来源

Do not learn from one type of English only.

  • Long-form reading: essays, serious journalism, books, reports
  • Spoken English: interviews, lectures, discussions, documentaries
  • Field English: material from your work or academic area
  • Literary / cultural English: fiction, memoir, criticism, speeches

不要只看一种英语。如果你只看考试材料,真实语言范围会太窄;如果你只看娱乐视频,正式读写能力又可能不足。高级学习需要多种输入互相连接。

Read one text four times | 一篇文章读四遍

  1. First read: What is the text about?
  2. Second read: How is the argument built?
  3. Third read: Which language choices are worth learning?
  4. Fourth read: Can you reproduce the core argument without looking?

第一遍读意思,第二遍读结构,第三遍读语言,第四遍读“自己能不能重建”。这样一篇好文章可以变成四种训练,而不是读完就丢掉。

Do not confuse recognition with ownership | “看得懂”不等于“会用”

You may recognise a phrase instantly when reading and still fail to produce it when speaking. Recognition is easier than retrieval.

你可能阅读时一眼就懂某个短语,但说话时完全想不起来。识别比主动提取容易。

To move language from passive to active use:

  • close the book
  • recall the phrase
  • say it aloud
  • change one part
  • use it in a new topic
  • use it again after a delay

高级语言的“拥有权”来自可提取、可变化、可迁移,而不是“我以前见过”。

How to use Chinese translation correctly | 高级阶段怎样正确使用中文翻译

Chinese translation can save time when the concept is difficult. But the translation should disappear from the final production stage.

  1. Read the English first.
  2. Use Chinese to confirm meaning if necessary.
  3. Return to the English immediately.
  4. Notice the English grammar and collocation.
  5. Cover the Chinese.
  6. Explain the idea in English.
  7. Use the English in a new context.

中文可以帮助你快速确认概念,但最终输出阶段要逐渐离开中文。否则你会一直练习“翻译”,而不是练习“直接组织英语”。

A 12-week advanced-English progression | 12 周高级英语进阶路线

WeeksMain focusOutput
1–2Diagnosis, C1–C2 baseline, personal error corpusTwo recordings + two writing samples
3–4Collocation, chunks, register, connotationDaily phrase retrieval + 3 short essays
5–6Tense, aspect, articles, countability, clause controlError-repair writing + retelling
7–8Deep reading, stance, implication, argumentAnnotated texts + oral summaries
9–10Advanced speaking, reformulation, pronunciation, listeningRepeated two- to five-minute talks
11–12Integrated writing and transferLong essay/report + presentation + reflection

12 周不是“学完高级英语”。它是建立高级学习系统的第一轮。之后继续循环,但材料更难,标准更高,个人弱点更具体。

A 30-day challenge | 30 天高级英语挑战

  • Read 20 serious articles or book chapters.
  • Listen to 10 long interviews, lectures or discussions.
  • Collect 100 useful collocations or chunks.
  • Write 12 short pieces and 2 long pieces.
  • Record 12 spoken responses.
  • Re-record four of them after correction.
  • Build a list of your 20 most repeated errors.
  • Repair the top five errors deliberately.
  • Summarise five difficult texts from memory.
  • Explain one complex idea to three different audiences.

重点不是完成数字,而是建立循环:输入 → 观察 → 提取 → 使用 → 反馈 → 修复 → 再使用。

What should you read? | 高级学习者应该读什么?

Choose texts that are difficult enough to contain new language, but clear enough that you can still follow the main argument.

  • quality newspapers and magazines
  • long-form essays
  • popular science
  • history and biography
  • well-edited nonfiction
  • academic articles in your field
  • literary fiction
  • speeches and interviews with transcripts
  • reports from credible institutions

不要为了“高级”故意选完全看不懂的材料。最好的材料通常是:大意能跟上,但每页都有一些值得学的语言和思想。

What should you listen to? | 高级听力应该听什么?

  • long interviews
  • university lectures
  • panel discussions
  • documentaries
  • news analysis
  • professional presentations
  • podcasts with transcripts
  • debates and public talks

至少一部分材料应该有文字稿。文字稿不是作弊,它是诊断工具:帮助你发现到底是“单词不认识”,还是“认识却没听出来”,还是“句子听见了却没跟上逻辑”。

Do not collect idioms just to sound advanced | 不要为了“高级感”大量堆成语

Idioms can be useful, but advanced English is not measured by how many colourful idioms you can force into a sentence. Many formal contexts need precise, plain language.

英语习语当然有价值,但高级英语不是“谁会用更多花哨 idiom”。很多正式场合需要的是准确、克制、直接的语言。

Learn idioms when they are frequent, useful and appropriate to your goals. Learn collocations and discourse patterns first.

优先顺序通常是:常用搭配 → 词块 → 语域 → 语篇表达 → 再补充真正高频、合适的习语。

Advanced English for study | 学术英语:不是把句子写得更长

Academic English needs evidence, structure, qualification and accurate reporting of other people’s ideas.

  • distinguish claim from evidence
  • show how strong the evidence is
  • avoid absolute language when the data do not justify it
  • summarise sources accurately
  • paraphrase without changing meaning
  • use citation language carefully
  • connect paragraphs into one argument
  • define key terms when necessary

学术英语的高级感来自“证据和控制”,不是来自“长句和难词”。

Advanced English for work | 职场英语:清楚、可靠、可行动

Professional English often values clarity over literary elegance. Your reader may need to make a decision from your message.

  • state the purpose early
  • separate facts from recommendations
  • show risk and uncertainty accurately
  • use headings and structure
  • avoid unnecessary jargon
  • make responsibilities and next actions explicit
  • change tone for seniority, client relationships and disagreement

职场高级英语的标准经常很简单:别人能不能快速理解、正确判断、采取行动?

Advanced English for serious conversation | 高级对话:能表达复杂而不是只表达强烈

When discussing difficult topics, advanced English helps you separate disagreement from hostility.

  • “I see the distinction, but I would question…”
  • “That depends on what we mean by…”
  • “There are at least two issues here.”
  • “I agree with the diagnosis but not the proposed solution.”
  • “The evidence supports a narrower claim.”
  • “That may be true in one context, but not necessarily in another.”

真正高级的对话能力,不是把立场说得更猛,而是能把复杂关系说得更清楚。

A simple C1–C2 self-check | C1–C2 自检

  • I can read a long article and explain its argument, not only its topic.
  • I can notice when a writer is hedging or distancing a claim.
  • I can summarise two sources and show where they agree and disagree.
  • I can speak for several minutes without losing structure.
  • I can reformulate when my first sentence is not precise.
  • I can choose different language for casual, professional and academic settings.
  • I can use collocations naturally rather than translating word by word.
  • I can control tense and reference across a long paragraph.
  • I can edit my own repeated errors.
  • I can explain complex ideas in simpler English without making them inaccurate.

如果这些项目有一半做不到,不代表你“不高级”。它只是告诉你下一轮训练应该从哪里开始。

The advanced learner’s weekly review | 每周复盘

  1. What new language did I actually use?
  2. Which mistakes repeated?
  3. Which phrases moved from passive recognition to active use?
  4. Which text was difficult because of ideas, and which because of language?
  5. Where did Chinese-to-English transfer cause trouble?
  6. What became easier?
  7. What is the next first weak link?

每周复盘的重点不是“我学了多少页”,而是“什么能力真的变强了”。

Recommended advanced books | 高级英语参考书

Books are tools, not the whole course. Use them to solve specific problems.

不要试图从第一页一直背到最后一页。最好把书当作“工具库”:诊断到什么问题,就用对应章节训练。

Research notes for Mandarin Chinese speakers | 面向普通话学习者的研究基础

Advanced learners need individual diagnosis; not every Mandarin speaker has the same difficulties. However, research gives us useful recurring areas to watch.

这些研究不是为了给中国学习者贴标签,而是帮助我们知道哪些语言系统值得特别检查:时态与体、搭配、实时加工、长期形成的母语迁移模式等。

Where this fits inside eduKate | 这套课程在 eduKate 英语体系中的位置

This Chinese Edition is a learner-entry and progression lane. It does not replace the canonical mechanism pages already developed across the eduKate ecosystem. When a specialist page already owns a mechanism, this course links to it and teaches the Mandarin-speaking learner how to use that knowledge.

这套中文版的任务,是给普通话学习者建立一个高级英语入口和进阶路线。eduKate 体系里如果已有某个机制的主页面,这里不重复抢占,而是连接过去,并把它转化成适合中国学习者使用的学习路径。

这些关键词不会被机械重复。每一课会围绕一个清楚的学习意图展开,避免为了 SEO 堆词而破坏阅读体验。

The rule for this whole series | 整个系列只守一个核心原则

Do not try to sound advanced. Try to control meaning.

不要努力“听起来高级”。要努力把意思控制准确。

If a simple sentence is exact, use the simple sentence. If a complex idea needs a complex structure, build it carefully. If a word is unfamiliar, learn how it behaves, not only what it translates to. If you make a repeated error, diagnose it. If a text is difficult, separate the idea problem from the language problem. If you can understand but cannot produce, retrieve and reuse. If you can produce but sound unnatural, study collocation and register.

如果一句简单英语已经准确,就用简单句。如果复杂思想真的需要复杂结构,再认真搭建。遇到新词,不只查中文意思,要查它怎样搭配、怎样变化、在什么场合出现。反复犯错,就做诊断。文章太难,就分清是“思想难”还是“语言难”。看得懂却说不出,就练提取和复用。说得出来却不自然,就练搭配和语域。

Start now | 现在开始

Write one sentence:

My English is already useful, but I want it to become more precise.

我的英语已经能用,但我希望它变得更准确。

Now replace precise with the next quality you need most: natural, fluent, clear, flexible, academic, professional, persuasive or confident.

现在,把 precise 换成你最需要提升的目标:natural(自然)、fluent(流利)、clear(清楚)、flexible(灵活)、academic(学术)、professional(专业)、persuasive(有说服力)或 confident(自信)。

That answer tells you where to begin.

你的答案,就是第一条学习路线。
