Master Collocation, Register and Precision | 掌握搭配、语域与精准表达
Advanced English is not the ability to make every sentence more complicated. It is the ability to choose the right English for this person, this purpose, this moment and this level of precision.
高级英语,不是把每一句话变得更复杂。真正的高级,是在这个人、这个目的、这个场景、这个时刻,选择最合适、最准确的英语。
You can know every word in a sentence and still choose the wrong sentence. You can write something grammatically correct and still sound too direct, too vague, too formal, too casual, too emotional, too distant or simply unlike the English normally used in that situation.
你可能认识一句话里的每一个单词,却仍然选错了整句话。你也可能语法完全正确,但听起来太直接、太模糊、太正式、太随便、太情绪化、太疏远,或者只是“不像这个场景里的自然英语”。
This is where advanced learners often stop improving. The problem is no longer only vocabulary or grammar. The problem is calibration.
很多高级学习者就是在这里进入平台期。问题已经不只是词汇或语法,而是校准能力:你能不能根据场景调整表达。
Before we begin: the ownership boundary | 开始之前:这一课不抢词汇主线
eduKate Sengkang now has a dedicated sibling course, How to Learn Advanced English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | 高级英语词汇进阶学习. That lane owns lexical depth: word families, collocation systems, connotation, phrase networks, active vocabulary, dictionary skills, corpus work and vocabulary retrieval.
eduKate Sengkang 现在已经有独立的高级英语词汇中文版路线。那里负责“词汇本身的深度学习”:词族、搭配系统、感情色彩、词块网络、主动词汇、词典技能、语料库学习和词汇提取。
This lesson has a different job. It asks how vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, tone and discourse are selected together so that whole English performance fits the situation. Collocation appears here only as one input to a larger decision. For deep collocation study, this page routes you to the vocabulary owner rather than duplicating it.
这一课的任务不同。我们研究的是:词汇、语法、句子结构、语气和篇章怎样一起被选择,让整段英语适合真实场景。搭配在这里只是整体决策的一部分;需要深入学搭配时,我们会连接到词汇主线,而不是重复制造第二套同样内容。
1. The four levels of a strong sentence | 一句强英语有四个层级
When learners ask, “Is this sentence correct?”, they are usually asking only the first question. Advanced English requires four questions.
| Level | Question | 中文版理解 |
|---|---|---|
| Correct | Is the grammar and basic meaning acceptable? | 语法和基本意义是否成立? |
| Natural | Would proficient users normally phrase it this way? | 真实英语通常会不会这样说? |
| Appropriate | Does it fit the audience, relationship, purpose and medium? | 是否适合对象、关系、目的和媒介? |
| Precise | Does it express exactly the strength, scope and distinction intended? | 强度、范围、区别是否准确? |
A sentence can pass Level 1 and fail Levels 2–4.
一句话完全可能“语法正确”,却在自然度、场景适切度和精准度上失败。
Compare:
- Correct: I strongly request you to send me the file today.
- More appropriate in many workplaces: Could you send me the file today if possible?
- More precise when there is a real deadline: Could you send me the file by 4 p.m. today? I need it for the final submission.
第一句语法不一定错,但在人际关系上可能过重。第二句更礼貌,却可能把真正的时间要求说得太弱。第三句同时完成礼貌、具体时间和原因说明。高级英语经常就是这种“整体校准”。
2. CEFR C1–C2: advanced means flexible choice | C1–C2 的核心是“灵活选择”
The CEFR descriptions of C1 emphasise a broad range of language, appropriate style, flexibility across social, academic and professional purposes, and the ability to adjust formality. The C1 sociolinguistic descriptors specifically include recognising register shifts, adjusting formality to the social context and expressing disagreement diplomatically.
CEFR 对 C1 的描述非常重要:高级学习者不仅“知道更多英语”,而且能在社会、学术、专业场景中灵活使用;能识别语域变化;能根据场景调整正式程度;甚至在强烈不同意时,也能保持外交式表达。
At C2, the target becomes even finer: subtle shades of meaning, sociolinguistic implications, idiomatic control and sophisticated language choices for persuasion, negotiation, advice and disagreement.
到了 C2,要求更细:不仅表达“大概意思”,还要控制细微意义、人际暗示、习语和各种复杂交际功能,例如说服、协商、劝阻、建议和谈判。
That is why this lesson is not a synonym lesson. It is a decision lesson.
所以,这一课不是“同义词升级课”,而是一门语言决策课。
3. Build a context model before you speak | 开口之前先建立场景模型
Before choosing words, ask seven questions.
- Audience: Who is receiving this?
- Relationship: friend, stranger, colleague, manager, client, examiner, public audience?
- Purpose: inform, request, persuade, disagree, explain, apologise, evaluate, recommend?
- Medium: conversation, message, email, report, essay, presentation, meeting?
- Stakes: casual, important, sensitive, legally or professionally consequential?
- Domain: everyday, academic, technical, professional, literary?
- Time pressure: carefully edited or real-time?
在选词之前,先回答七个问题:谁听?你和他什么关系?你要完成什么任务?用什么媒介?事情严重到什么程度?属于什么领域?你有时间编辑,还是必须现场说?
This seven-part model prevents a common advanced-learning error: choosing language by dictionary meaning alone.
这套七问模型,可以防止高级学习者最常见的错误之一:只根据字典意思选语言。
4. One meaning, five contexts | 同一个意思,五种英语
Suppose the core meaning is: “I disagree with this plan.” Watch how the English changes.
| Context | Possible English | What changes? |
|---|---|---|
| Friend | I don’t think that’s a great idea. | casual, direct but friendly |
| Colleague | I’m not sure that approach will solve the main problem. | softened professional disagreement |
| Senior manager | I have some reservations about the current proposal, particularly the timeline. | formal, specific, diplomatic |
| Academic discussion | I would question the assumption that the proposed mechanism is sufficient. | targets the claim, not the person |
| Formal report | The proposed approach may not adequately address the underlying constraint. | impersonal analytical register |
核心意义没有完全改变,但“关系、语气、责任、强度、攻击对象、句子结构”都发生了变化。
An advanced learner needs a family of formulations, not one memorised sentence.
高级学习者需要的是“一组可以切换的表达”,而不是背住一句万能句型。
5. Register is not a ladder from simple to clever | 语域不是“简单 → 高级”的阶梯
Many learners imagine register as a vertical ladder: simple English at the bottom, formal English at the top. That is misleading.
很多学习者把语域想成一条纵向阶梯:下面是简单英语,上面是正式高级英语。这种理解会制造很多不自然表达。
Register is better understood as a map. Different situations occupy different regions. Casual conversation is not “lower” than academic prose. It is specialised for a different social job.
更好的理解是“地图”。日常口语并不比学术英语低级;它只是为不同的人际任务优化。
| Function | Conversational | Neutral professional | Formal / academic |
|---|---|---|---|
| start | kick off / get started | start / begin | commence / initiate |
| look at | take a look at | look at / examine | examine / analyse / evaluate |
| help | help out | help / support | facilitate / enable / assist |
| show | point out | show | indicate / demonstrate / reveal |
| problem | problem / snag | issue / problem | constraint / limitation / concern / defect, depending on meaning |
Do not replace “start” with “commence” because you want to sound advanced. Replace it only if the situation needs that register.
不要因为想“显得高级”就把 start 全部换成 commence。只有场景需要时才换。
6. Precision starts with scope | 精准表达先控制“范围”
One of the largest differences between weak and strong advanced English is claim scope.
高级英语最重要的差别之一,是你会不会控制“论断范围”。
Compare:
- Too broad: Social media is harmful.
- Narrower: Heavy social-media use can be harmful for some adolescents.
- More precise: Heavy social-media use may be associated with poorer well-being for some adolescents, although the direction and size of the effect can vary across individuals and contexts.
The last sentence is not automatically “better” because it is longer. It is better when the evidence really requires those limits.
最后一句不是因为更长就更高级,而是因为它把“可能性、人群、关系类型、个体差异、情境差异”说得更准确。
7. Precision has six controls | 精准表达有六个控制旋钮
| Control | Weak question | Advanced question |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Is it true? | For whom, where and under what conditions? |
| Strength | Do I believe it? | How strong is the evidence or commitment? |
| Time | When? | Is this temporary, repeated, completed or continuing? |
| Cause | Did A happen before B? | Does A cause B, contribute to B, predict B or merely accompany B? |
| Responsibility | Who did it? | Should the actor be foregrounded, backgrounded or unknown? |
| Category | What happened? | What kind of event, problem, evidence or change is it? |
高级英语经常不是“再加一个形容词”,而是把范围、强度、时间、因果、责任和类别控制得更清楚。
8. Modality: may, might, can, could, should, must | 情态词不是小语法点
Modal verbs are precision tools. They express possibility, ability, obligation, recommendation, inference, permission and social distance.
may、might、can、could、should、must 不是“小语法填空点”,而是高级表达里最重要的精准工具之一。
| Sentence | Meaning effect |
|---|---|
| This causes delays. | strong causal claim |
| This can cause delays. | possible under some conditions |
| This may cause delays. | uncertain possibility |
| This is likely to cause delays. | probability is relatively high |
| This appears to contribute to delays. | evidence suggests partial causal role |
| This may have contributed to the delay. | past possibility, causal contribution uncertain |
中文翻译常常都会被压成“可能导致”,但英语内部的证据强度和说话者立场并不一样。
9. Hedge because reality is uncertain, not because you are afraid | 缓和表达不是“胆小英语”
Hedging is often misunderstood as weak writing. In advanced academic and professional English, a hedge can make a sentence more intellectually responsible.
很多学习者把 hedge 理解成“没自信”。其实在高级学术和专业英语中,恰当的缓和表达往往代表更负责、更精确。
- appears to
- seems to
- may
- might
- is likely to
- tends to
- in many cases
- under certain conditions
- to some extent
- the available evidence suggests
But hedging everything also fails. If the fire alarm is sounding, “There may possibly be some indication of smoke” is absurd. Precision means matching certainty to evidence and urgency.
但如果所有句子都无限缓和,也会失败。精准的关键,是让确定程度与证据和紧急程度匹配。
10. Intensify carefully | 强调也要精确
Advanced learners often overuse very, extremely, absolutely and completely. Stronger language should be earned by meaning.
高级学习者常见另一个问题,是过度使用 very、extremely、absolutely、completely。强烈表达必须有意义依据。
| General | More precise |
|---|---|
| very important | critical / central / consequential / essential, depending on meaning |
| very big change | substantial change / structural shift / sharp increase, depending on what changed |
| very bad problem | serious defect / persistent constraint / acute shortage / major risk |
这里再次出现“词汇深度”问题。需要深入建立这些词的搭配和差别时,请进入 高级英语词汇中文版。本课只负责告诉你:何时需要这种更细的选择。
11. Disagreement: attack the claim, not the person | 反对观点,不要攻击人
C1 sociolinguistic competence includes the ability to express strong disagreement diplomatically. That matters in universities, workplaces and international communication.
CEFR C1 的社会语言能力明确包含:即使强烈不同意,也能用外交式方式表达。这对大学、职场和国际交流非常重要。
Compare:
- Personal: You are wrong.
- Claim-focused: I don’t think that conclusion follows from the evidence.
- Analytical: The evidence appears to support a narrower conclusion.
- Constructive: I agree with the diagnosis, but I would question whether the proposed solution addresses the main constraint.
高级英语会把“人”和“观点”分开。你可以很强烈地反对一个论证,同时保持对人的尊重。
12. Requests: directness is a variable | 请求的直接程度可以调节
English requests are highly sensitive to relationship, urgency and burden.
| Form | Typical effect |
|---|---|
| Send me the file. | direct command; appropriate only in some relationships or urgent settings |
| Please send me the file. | polite marker added, but still direct |
| Could you send me the file? | conventional polite request |
| Could you send me the file by noon? | polite + precise deadline |
| Would you be able to send me the file by noon? I need it for the client review. | more deferential + reason |
中国学习者并不是天然“太直接”或“太礼貌”。真实差异因人、地区、教育和经历而异。更有用的方法是建立可调节的请求系统,然后根据场景选择。
13. Overpoliteness can also be a problem | 太客气也可能不自然
A 2026 longitudinal study of Chinese EFL learners in an English-medium university found development in several pragmatic areas, including better recognition of overpoliteness and improved use of pragmalinguistic features. That is a useful reminder: pragmatic competence is not simply “be more polite”. It is “be appropriately polite”.
2026 年一项针对中国 EFL 学习者的纵向研究发现,学习者在一些语用能力上会发展,其中包括更好地识别“过度礼貌”。这个结果很有启发:语用能力不是“越客气越好”,而是客气程度合适。
Compare a simple workplace message:
- Possibly over-elaborate: I sincerely apologise for disturbing you and humbly request that, if it is not too inconvenient, you might kindly consider sending the document.
- Natural professional: Could you send me the document when you have a moment? Thanks.
- Urgent professional: Could you send me the document by 2 p.m.? We need it for the client call.
高级英语要学会“减掉不必要的礼貌结构”,而不是只学更多礼貌词。
14. Reformulation: the skill that saves advanced speakers | 改述能力:高级口语的救命技能
Even C1–C2 speakers do not always retrieve the perfect phrase immediately. What changes is their ability to reformulate without losing control.
即使 C1–C2 学习者,也不可能每次立刻找到最完美的词。高级之处在于:找不到时能不能快速改述,而不是卡住。
- What I mean is…
- Let me put that another way.
- More specifically…
- Perhaps a better way to describe it is…
- I’m using “efficient” here to mean…
- To be precise…
- That is not quite the distinction I want. The key difference is…
这些表达不是“口语模板”,而是实时思考的工具。它们帮你保护意思,让语言在压力下继续运行。
15. Paraphrase is meaning preservation, not synonym swapping | 改写不是换同义词
A weak paraphrase replaces words. A strong paraphrase rebuilds the message while preserving the meaning relationship.
弱改写只是换词。强改写会重建句子,但保护原来的意义、因果、范围、强度和立场。
Original: The policy may disproportionately affect lower-income households.
- Weak: The regulation might unequally influence poorer families.
- Better neutral paraphrase: Lower-income households may experience a greater impact from the policy than other groups.
- Simplified explanation: The policy may create more difficulty for families with less income.
- Professional briefing: The distributional impact may be greater for lower-income households.
Notice that each version changes structure and register, not just individual words.
注意:每个版本改变的是整套结构和语域,而不是简单把一个词换成另一个“高级词”。
16. Use reformulation ladders | 建立改述阶梯
Take one idea and express it at five levels.
| Level | Task |
|---|---|
| 1 | Explain it to a 12-year-old. |
| 2 | Explain it to an adult friend. |
| 3 | Write it in a workplace email. |
| 4 | Write it in a formal report. |
| 5 | Write it in an academic paragraph with qualification. |
同一个思想做五次改述,可以同时训练词汇、语域、句法、逻辑和受众意识。这比单独背“正式词汇表”更接近真正高级英语。
17. Sentence architecture controls emphasis | 句子结构决定重点落在哪里
Advanced precision is often structural rather than lexical.
高级精准表达经常不是“换词”,而是“换结构”。
Compare:
- The committee rejected the proposal because the cost was too high.
- Because the cost was too high, the committee rejected the proposal.
- It was the projected cost that led the committee to reject the proposal.
- The proposal was rejected primarily on cost grounds.
四句事实接近,但焦点不同:第一句中性叙述;第二句先建立原因;第三句强烈突出成本;第四句变成报告式、压缩式表达。
18. Active and passive voice are information tools | 主动与被动不是“哪个好”的问题
Many learners are told either “avoid passive voice” or “use passive voice to sound formal”. Both rules are too simple.
很多学习者听过两个相反规则:“尽量不用被动”或者“正式写作多用被动”。这两个规则都太粗。
- Active: The research team analysed 500 responses. — actor matters.
- Passive: Five hundred responses were analysed. — procedure/result matters more than actor.
- Passive with actor: The samples were independently reviewed by two assessors. — process first, actor still relevant.
精准英语会问:“读者现在最需要先知道谁?”而不是机械选择主动或被动。
19. Nominalisation: useful compression, dangerous fog | 名词化:可以压缩,也可以制造雾
Formal and academic English often uses nouns such as assessment, implementation, reduction, allocation, evaluation. Nominalisation can compress complex relations and connect ideas across paragraphs.
正式和学术英语常使用 assessment、implementation、reduction、allocation、evaluation 等名词化结构。它们可以压缩复杂信息,也方便篇章连接。
But excessive nominalisation hides actors and actions.
- Foggy: The implementation of the reduction of expenditure was followed by the deterioration of service quality.
- Clearer: After the organisation cut spending, service quality deteriorated.
- Analytical: The spending reduction was followed by a decline in service quality, although the evidence does not establish causation.
高级写作不是“名词越多越正式”,而是根据分析需要选择压缩程度。
20. Reference must stay visible | 指代链不能让读者迷路
In long English writing, pronouns and demonstratives create reference chains: it, they, this, that, these, those, which. A Mandarin speaker may sometimes rely on topic continuity in ways that English readers find under-specified.
长篇英语里,it、they、this、that、these、those、which 会形成指代链。中文可以在语境清楚时更多依靠话题延续;英语长文如果指代太省略,读者很容易迷路。
Compare:
- Vague: The company changed the pricing model after the regulator published the report. This caused concern.
- Clearer: The company’s decision to change the pricing model caused concern.
- Different meaning: The regulator’s report caused concern.
“This” 到底指前面的哪个事件?高级编辑必须检查这种“意义歧义”。
21. Connectors should reveal logic, not decorate paragraphs | 连接词要显示逻辑,不是装饰
Advanced learners sometimes overuse moreover, furthermore, nevertheless, consequently because these look formal. The problem is not the words themselves. The problem is using them without a real logical relationship.
很多学习者为了“高级感”大量使用 moreover、furthermore、nevertheless、consequently。问题不在这些词,而在于句子之间是否真的有对应逻辑。
| Logic | Possible signals |
|---|---|
| Addition | also, in addition, moreover |
| Contrast | but, however, by contrast, whereas |
| Concession | although, even though, nevertheless |
| Cause | because, since, due to |
| Result | therefore, consequently, as a result |
| Qualification | however, in some cases, subject to, provided that |
| Reformulation | in other words, more precisely, that is |
先建立逻辑,再选择连接词。不要先选“漂亮连接词”,再强迫句子配合它。
22. Spoken register has grammar too | 口语语域也有自己的语法
Natural spoken English contains contractions, ellipsis, discourse markers, repairs and fragments that may be inappropriate in formal writing but perfectly normal in conversation.
自然口语会出现缩写、省略、话语标记、改口和不完整句。这些结构放在正式文章里可能不合适,但在真实对话里完全正常。
- Well, the main thing is…
- I mean, it depends.
- That said, I can see why…
- Not necessarily.
- Which is interesting, because…
- So what you’re saying is…
高级英语不应该让你所有场景都像在写论文。会自然说话,也是高级。
23. Written register has pacing | 书面语有自己的节奏
Formal writing gives you time to organise information. Use that time. The reader should not have to reconstruct the argument from scattered clues.
书面语最大的优势是“可以编辑”。既然有时间,就应该把信息顺序设计清楚,不要把推理任务全部丢给读者。
A useful paragraph architecture:
- Claim: what is the paragraph saying?
- Mechanism: why or how does it happen?
- Evidence/example: what supports it?
- Qualification: what is the limit?
- Return: why does this matter to the larger argument?
高级段落常常不是“句子更复杂”,而是“读者路线更清楚”。
24. Email register: subject, ask, reason, next step | 邮件语域:目的、请求、原因、下一步
Professional emails reward clarity. A strong advanced email often becomes simpler, not more elaborate.
职场邮件越高级,往往越简洁、越容易执行,而不是越华丽。
Weak: Dear Sir, I would like to sincerely enquire whether it might perhaps be possible for you to kindly provide me with the aforementioned document at your earliest possible convenience.
Better: Hi Daniel, could you send me the revised document by Thursday afternoon? I need it for Friday’s client review. Thanks.
第二版没有“难词”,但在对象、动作、截止时间、原因、语气上都更准确。
25. Academic register: make evidence visible | 学术语域:让证据强度可见
Academic English needs a clear distinction between observation, interpretation, inference and recommendation.
| Job | Useful framing |
|---|---|
| Observation | The data show… / The study found… |
| Interpretation | This pattern suggests… / One possible explanation is… |
| Limitation | However, the sample does not allow… |
| Comparison | This is broadly consistent with… |
| Inference | It is therefore plausible that… |
| Recommendation | These findings support the case for… |
学术英语不是把“我觉得”全部换成“大词”,而是把证据、解释和推论分层。
26. Professional register: make action visible | 专业语域:让行动可见
Professional English often revolves around decisions, responsibilities, constraints, risk, evidence and next actions.
- We have identified two constraints.
- The main risk is schedule dependency.
- We recommend delaying the launch by one week.
- Sarah will confirm the supplier by Tuesday.
- If the revised estimate exceeds the limit, the issue should be escalated.
专业英语的精准度,常常体现在:谁负责、什么时候做、什么条件触发下一步、风险是什么、决定依据是什么。
27. Public-facing English: remove unnecessary technicality | 面向公众:去掉不必要的技术感
An expert must sometimes move in the opposite direction: from technical precision to accessible precision.
专家有时需要反向移动:不是把话说得更技术,而是把技术内容说得更容易理解,同时不失真。
- Technical: The intervention reduced mean response latency.
- Public explanation: People responded faster after the intervention.
Simplification is an advanced mediation skill. If you simplify by deleting an essential condition, you distort. If you simplify by removing unnecessary jargon while protecting the core relationship, you clarify.
“说简单”本身也是高级能力。真正困难的是:删掉术语,却不删掉重要条件。
28. Chinese can help you see distinctions | 中文可以帮助你“看见差别”
Use Mandarin strategically. When two English choices feel similar, compare their likely Chinese renderings, then return to English and rebuild the distinction from context.
中文可以帮助你快速“看见区别”。当两个英文表达很接近时,可以先比较它们可能对应的中文,再回到英语语境重新建立差异。
Example:
- concern — 担忧 / 关注点
- issue — 问题 / 议题
- problem — 需要解决的问题
- challenge — 需要应对的困难,也可能带有成长/任务感
- constraint — 限制条件
- risk — 尚未发生但可能造成损失的风险
Then stop using Chinese as the final answer. Put each English item into a real sentence and compare what it does.
接下来,不要停在中文翻译。把每个词放进真实句子,比较它们在英语里“做什么”。
29. Translation traps: preserve the job, not the shape | 翻译陷阱:保留“功能”,不要保留表面形状
Chinese and English may perform the same social job with different structures. Word-for-word translation can preserve content but damage tone.
中文和英语可能用完全不同的结构完成同一个社交任务。逐字翻译可能保住信息,却破坏语气。
Instead of asking “How do I translate this sentence?”, ask:
- What job is the Chinese sentence doing?
- How strong is it?
- What relationship does it assume?
- What would English normally do in this context?
高级中译英最重要的变化之一,是从“翻句子形状”升级为“翻交际功能”。
30. Listening for register | 听力也要听语域
When listening, do not only ask “What did they say?” Ask “What relationship is this language building?”
听力不要只问“他说了什么”,还要问“这种表达正在建立什么人际关系”。
- Is the speaker distancing themselves from the claim?
- Are they joking?
- Are they disagreeing indirectly?
- Are they signalling authority?
- Are they softening a request?
- Are they moving from formal presentation to informal aside?
- Are they using irony?
CEFR C1 specifically expects learners to recognise register shifts and nuances. 高级听力的真正难度,常常就在这些“没有直接写出来”的关系里。
31. Pronunciation carries register and stance | 发音也会传递语域和立场
The same words can sound warm, irritated, doubtful, authoritative or playful depending on stress and intonation.
同一句话,仅仅改变重音和语调,就可能听起来温和、烦躁、怀疑、权威或开玩笑。
Try saying: That’s interesting.
- genuine interest
- polite acknowledgement
- skepticism
- irony
高级口语不能把发音理解成“单词读音总和”。语调、节奏和重音也是意义系统的一部分。
32. Build a register notebook, not a sentence cemetery | 建立“语域笔记”,不要建立句型坟场
Do not collect hundreds of fixed sentences with no context. Record each useful expression with a situation label.
| Expression | Function | Register | Typical context |
|---|---|---|---|
| I’m not convinced that… | disagreement | neutral-professional | meeting / discussion |
| I would question whether… | analytical disagreement | formal-academic | essay / seminar |
| That doesn’t sound right to me. | informal disagreement | conversational | friend / informal colleague |
| Could we revisit…? | request to reconsider | professional | meeting |
| It may be worth considering… | soft recommendation | professional-formal | report / meeting |
句型只有和“功能 + 语域 + 场景”绑定,才真正有价值。
33. The four-pass calibration method | 四遍校准法
Use this method when revising writing or preparing important speech.
- Meaning pass: Is the core idea correct?
- Precision pass: Is scope, strength, time and causality accurate?
- Register pass: Does the language fit the audience and purpose?
- Naturalness pass: Would a proficient user normally phrase it this way?
第一遍只看意思;第二遍看精准度;第三遍看语域;第四遍看自然度。不要一开始同时修所有问题,否则很容易失去主线。
34. The first weak link in register | 语域也有“第一个弱点”
| Symptom | Likely weak link | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Grammar is correct but emails sound stiff. | register calibration | compare real professional models |
| I sound rude when disagreeing. | pragmatic framing | claim-focused disagreement practice |
| I sound vague in reports. | scope / category precision | replace broad nouns with exact analytical categories |
| I use difficult vocabulary unnaturally. | lexical depth | route to Advanced Vocabulary Chinese Edition |
| I cannot paraphrase under pressure. | reformulation retrieval | same-idea multiple-form practice |
| My essays sound like spoken English. | medium mismatch | formal writing model comparison |
| My speech sounds like an essay. | spoken-register control | conversation transcription and shadowing |
| I hedge everything. | certainty calibration | rank evidence strength before writing |
修最早断掉的环节,不要一次同时“升级所有表达”。
35. Practice 1: one message, six audiences | 练习一:一个信息,六个对象
Core message: The deadline cannot be met.
Rewrite it for:
- a close friend
- a teammate
- a manager
- a client
- a formal report
- a public announcement
Then compare what changed: pronouns, responsibility, apology, certainty, detail, reason, next step and tone.
同一个事实,面对六种对象时,代词、责任、道歉、确定程度、细节、原因、下一步和语气都会变化。
36. Practice 2: one claim, five certainty levels | 练习二:一个观点,五种确定程度
Base idea: remote work improves productivity.
- Write it as a strong claim.
- Write it as a likely claim.
- Write it as a possible claim.
- Write it as a conditional claim.
- Write it as a cautious interpretation of limited evidence.
Then identify exactly which words changed the evidential strength.
这个练习会让你真正“看见” may、can、tends to、appears to、under certain conditions 等结构如何改变论断。
37. Practice 3: simplify without distortion | 练习三:简化,但不要失真
Choose one paragraph from a serious article or report.
- Summarise it in 80 words.
- Explain it to a teenager in 50 words.
- Turn it into three bullet points for a manager.
- Turn the three bullet points back into a formal paragraph.
If the meaning changes, find where the distortion entered.
如果意思变了,找出失真发生在哪一步。这是高级 mediation 和 precision 的核心训练。
38. Practice 4: repair translated English | 练习四:修复“翻译腔”
Take five English sentences you originally created from Chinese. Do not ask only whether grammar is correct.
- Underline the phrase that feels translated.
- Identify the communication job.
- Find two authentic English alternatives.
- Choose the one that fits the relationship and medium.
- Say the repaired sentence aloud.
- Reuse it two days later in a different context.
目标不是让英语“更像外国人”,而是让英语本身建立独立的表达路线。
39. Practice 5: disagreement ladder | 练习五:反对表达阶梯
Take one opinion you disagree with and create seven versions:
- very casual
- friendly neutral
- professional
- diplomatic professional
- academic
- formal written critique
- high-stakes disagreement where action is required
Then ask which versions attack the person, which attack the claim, and which propose a next step.
这个练习可以把“礼貌”从抽象规则变成可操作的语域选择。
40. Practice 6: spoken-to-written transformation | 练习六:口语转书面语
Record yourself explaining an idea for two minutes. Transcribe it. Then turn it into a 250-word formal paragraph.
你会看到口语里的重复、停顿、修复、模糊词和话语标记。不要把它们全部当“错误”;先判断哪些是自然口语特征,哪些在正式书面语里需要重构。
Then reverse the task: take the formal paragraph and explain it naturally without reading.
再把正式段落反向变成自然口语。真正高级的学习者可以在两个系统之间来回移动。
41. A 20-minute daily precision routine | 每天 20 分钟精准表达训练
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 5 min | Read one short authentic email, article paragraph or transcript. |
| 5 min | Mark one register choice, one precision choice and one reformulation move. |
| 5 min | Rewrite the message for a different audience. |
| 5 min | Say the new version aloud without looking. |
每天只练一个小场景,但持续 30 天,你会开始建立“场景 → 表达选择”的自动路线。
42. A 45-minute growth session | 45 分钟增长模式
| Time | Task | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 10 min | Read/listen to a high-quality model. | input |
| 8 min | Identify audience, purpose, register and stance. | diagnosis |
| 10 min | Rewrite or retell for another audience. | reformulation |
| 10 min | Produce your own message in the same register. | transfer |
| 7 min | Check precision and record one repeated weakness. | feedback |
这比单纯“背正式表达”更接近真实高级英语,因为每次练习都要求你作出语言选择。
43. A seven-day register cycle | 七天语域循环
- Day 1: compare casual and formal versions of the same message.
- Day 2: practise requests and deadlines.
- Day 3: practise agreement and disagreement.
- Day 4: practise certainty and hedging.
- Day 5: practise spoken-to-written transformation.
- Day 6: practise academic/professional paragraph reformulation.
- Day 7: record a mixed task with no notes and diagnose.
七天之后,不要只问“学了多少表达”。问:“我现在能不能根据对象和目的自动换一种说法?”
44. A 12-week precision progression | 12 周精准表达路线
| Weeks | Focus | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | correct vs natural vs appropriate vs precise | baseline email, essay, speaking sample |
| 3–4 | requests, disagreement, politeness, directness | scenario rewrites |
| 5–6 | certainty, stance, hedging, evidence strength | argument paragraphs |
| 7–8 | spoken vs written register | transformation portfolio |
| 9–10 | academic, professional and public-facing reformulation | three-audience task |
| 11–12 | real-time transfer and repair | recorded discussion + final writing |
12 周目标不是“背完一套高级句型”,而是建立语域选择能力。
45. Build a personal calibration corpus | 建立个人“校准语料库”
Keep examples of your own language where the first version was technically correct but contextually weak.
| Original | Problem | Repair | Context rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| I demand that you reply soon. | too strong for ordinary professional request | Could you reply by Thursday? | make deadline precise without unnecessary aggression |
| The results prove that… | evidence too weak for prove | The results suggest that… | match claim strength to evidence |
| We utilised a new method. | unnecessary formality | We used a new method. | simple word is often better |
| This is a very big issue. | vague category | This is a major scheduling constraint. | classify the problem precisely |
你的个人语料库会逐渐告诉你:你最常出现的是“太正式、太直接、太模糊、太绝对、太像中文、还是太书面”。这就是个人课程。
46. Use authentic models, but do not imitate blindly | 用真实范本,但不要盲目模仿
Collect high-quality examples from serious journalism, university materials, professional reports, well-edited books, interviews and real workplace communication where available.
可以从高质量新闻、大学资料、专业报告、编辑良好的书籍、访谈和真实职场文本中收集范本。
But always ask:
- Who is speaking?
- To whom?
- Why?
- What medium?
- What institutional or cultural context?
A phrase from a legal judgment may be excellent English and still be terrible in a friendly email.
法律判决里的表达可能非常优秀,但放进朋友聊天就会非常糟糕。范本必须和场景绑定。
47. Useful books and tools | 值得使用的书与工具

- Cambridge Dictionary — examples, grammar, pronunciation and usage.

51. Final assignment | 本课作业
Choose one message you genuinely need to communicate this week. It could be a request, disagreement, explanation, recommendation or argument.
选择你这周真的需要表达的一条信息:请求、反对、解释、建议或论证都可以。
Create five versions:
- casual conversation
- neutral everyday English
- professional spoken English
- professional written English
- formal or academic English
Then answer:
- Which facts stayed the same?
- Which words changed?
- Which grammar changed?
- Which version became more direct?
- Which version became more qualified?
- Which version would sound wrong in another context?
最后,不要问“哪一句最高级?”问:
哪一句,在它自己的场景里最准确?
That is the question advanced English keeps asking.
这就是高级英语一直在问的问题。

The next lesson moves from context calibration into a major Mandarin-to-English transfer problem: how to stop carrying Chinese grammatical organisation directly into English when the two languages package information differently.
下一课进入一个更深的中英迁移问题:当中文和英语组织信息的方式不同,怎样停止把中文语法结构直接搬进英语。
