Advanced Editing for Meaning, Style and Register | 高级意义、风格与语体编辑

Advanced editing is not rewriting everything. It is identifying the exact layer that is failing and changing only what improves meaning.

At high levels, a strong draft can become worse when an editor changes too much. C2-direction editing therefore works from meaning outward: proposition, evidence, stance, source ownership, structure, register, lexical fit, rhythm and finally surface correctness.

高级编辑的核心是“最小有效修改”:先找到真正的问题,再做最小、最精确的修复。

The advanced-editing map | 高级编辑地图

  1. meaning
  2. evidence
  3. stance
  4. source ownership
  5. macro-structure
  6. paragraph cohesion
  7. register
  8. lexical precision
  9. sentence rhythm
  10. surface correctness

1. Edit meaning first | 先改意思

Ask:

Does this sentence say what the writer actually means?

2. Proposition audit | 命题审计

Separate the core proposition from stylistic packaging.

Sentence:

It is perhaps reasonable to suggest that the policy may have had some effect.

Core proposition:

The policy may have had an effect.

3. Preserve intended strength | 保留原有强度

Do not simplify may into did.

4. Meaning error outranks grammar polish | 意义错误优先

A grammatically elegant false claim is worse than a plain accurate sentence.

5. Evidence audit | 证据审计

For each major claim, ask:

  • What supports it?
  • How strong is the support?
  • What limitation matters?

6. Claim–evidence mismatch | 主张与证据不匹配

Evidence:

A small survey found higher satisfaction.

Overclaim:

The programme improves performance.

7. Repair by narrowing | 缩小主张

The survey suggests that participants were more satisfied with the programme.

8. Stance audit | 立场审计

Underline:

  • may
  • might
  • appears
  • likely
  • clearly
  • proves

9. Remove accidental overconfidence | 删除意外过度确定

clearly, obviously and undoubtedly often need evidence or removal.

10. Remove accidental weakness | 删除无故变弱

Known fact:

The report was published in 2025.

Do not hedge it as may have been published.

Can the reader tell which idea belongs to:

  • Source A
  • Source B
  • the writer
  • participants

12. Reporting verb audit | 转述动词审计

Check whether suggests, argues, reports, claims, acknowledges preserve source stance.

13. Accidental ownership drift | 来源归属漂移

Source:

The authors suggest that the effect may be temporary.

Bad rewrite:

The effect is temporary.

14. Macro-structure audit | 宏观结构审计

Before editing sentences, reverse-outline the whole draft.

15. Paragraph job test | 段落任务测试

For each paragraph write one label:

  • frame
  • evidence
  • qualification
  • counterargument
  • synthesis
  • conclusion

16. Remove duplicated jobs | 删除重复任务

If paragraphs 3 and 5 both make the same claim with similar evidence, merge or differentiate them.

17. Missing-step repair | 补缺失逻辑

If the reader must jump from evidence to conclusion, add the warrant/explanation—not another connector.

18. Reorder before rewriting | 先调顺序,再改句子

A paragraph in the wrong place often causes more confusion than a weak sentence.

19. Paragraph cohesion audit | 段落衔接审计

Check:

  • topic chain
  • reference chain
  • known→new flow
  • bridge sentences

20. Connector audit | 连接词审计

Do not add however unless there is real contrast.

21. Remove connector stuffing | 删除连接词堆积

Weak:

However, moreover, on the other hand…

Use one accurate relation.

22. Reference audit | 指代审计

Check every:

  • it
  • this
  • that
  • they
  • these

23. This + noun | this + 名词

This limitation is often clearer than this.

24. Register audit | 语体审计

Ask:

  • Who is the audience?
  • What relationship?
  • What level of formality?

25. Formality inflation | 过度正式

Weak:

It is incumbent upon participants to undertake completion of the form.

Better:

Participants must complete the form.

26. Informality mismatch | 过度口语

Formal report:

The results were kind of surprising. ✗

Better:

The results were unexpected.

27. Lexical precision audit | 词汇精度审计

Check:

  • collocation
  • near-synonym
  • strength
  • connotation
  • register

28. Replace rare but wrong | 删除“高级但不合适”的词

The ordinary word is better if it is more precise.

29. Collocation surgery | 搭配微修

make a conclusiondraw/reach a conclusion

30. Preposition surgery | 介词微修

effect in performanceeffect on performance

31. Semantic-strength surgery | 强度微修

provessupports when evidence is not definitive.

32. Sentence-length audit | 句长审计

Long sentences are acceptable when the structure remains transparent.

33. Split when cognitive load is too high | 负荷太高时拆句

A sentence with three embeddings, four qualifications and two source voices may need division.

34. Combine when prose becomes choppy | 过碎时合句

Short sentences can be joined when the logical relation is strong and clear.

35. Rhythm audit | 节奏审计

Vary sentence length deliberately. Do not alternate mechanically.

36. Emphasis placement | 强调位置

Put important information where the reader can notice it—often near sentence openings or endings.

37. Given→new flow | 已知→新信息

Move from established information toward the new contribution.

38. Nominalisation audit | 名词化审计

Ask whether abstract nouns improve density or hide action.

A decision was made…The committee decided…

40. Passive audit | 被动审计

Use passive when process/result deserves focus, not to hide a necessary agent.

41. Figurative-language audit | 修辞审计

Check:

  • mixed metaphors
  • clichés
  • analogy limits
  • emotional framing

42. Rhetorical structure audit | 高级结构审计

For every inversion or cleft, ask:

What emphasis does this add?

43. Remove decorative complexity | 删除装饰性复杂

If the structure has no communicative job, simplify it.

44. Redundancy audit | 冗余审计

Weak:

future plans for the future

completely unanimous

45. Compression audit | 压缩审计

Remove repeated ideas, not necessary qualifications.

46. Do not edit away nuance | 不要把细微差别剪掉

A sentence may be longer because the uncertainty genuinely matters.

47. Tone audit | 语气审计

Check whether criticism, recommendation and disagreement fit the relationship and stakes.

48. Politeness vs clarity | 礼貌 vs 清晰

Do not soften safety or compliance language until the instruction becomes ambiguous.

49. Audience audit | 受众审计

Can the intended reader decode the terminology and background assumptions?

50. Layered explanation edit | 分层解释编辑

For public-facing writing:

  1. plain answer
  2. short explanation
  3. technical detail

51. Editing passes | 分层编辑

Useful order:

  1. meaning/evidence
  2. structure/cohesion
  3. stance/source
  4. register/lexis
  5. sentence rhythm
  6. surface errors

52. One pass, one job | 一轮只做一类工作

Trying to fix everything simultaneously makes diagnosis less reliable.

53. Change budget | 修改预算

When a draft is strong, set a small change budget. Every change must earn its place.

54. Before/after comparison | 修改前后比较

After editing, ask:

  • What improved?
  • What meaning changed?
  • What was lost?

55. Revert when worse | 变差就撤回

Advanced editing includes the ability to undo an unnecessary change.

56. Read aloud | 朗读检查

Reading aloud can reveal rhythm, repeated words and overloaded sentences.

57. But sound is not the only criterion | 好听不等于准确

A smoother sentence can still distort evidence.

58. Editing source-based writing | 编辑来源写作

Always compare the final paraphrase against the source after stylistic editing.

59. Editing across registers | 跨语体编辑

Convert one section among:

  • formal report
  • professional email
  • public explanation
  • spoken briefing

60. Mandarin transfer: 中文偏好与英语偏好不完全相同 | 不按中文节奏直改

English often needs more explicit subjects, reference chains and collocations.

61. Mandarin transfer: 四字表达可能让英文过度名词化 | 用动词修复

When an English sentence becomes noun-heavy, ask who did what.

62. Editing practice A | 编辑 A

Original:

It can clearly be seen that the implementation of the programme resulted in a very significant improvement in outcomes.

Possible repair:

The programme was associated with better outcomes.

Then restore stronger causal language only if the design supports it.
