Synthesising Across Disciplines | 跨学科综合

Cross-disciplinary synthesis is not collecting ideas from different fields. It is deciding which concepts can genuinely travel across fields, which must be translated, and which should remain separate.

At advanced levels, a learner may need to combine economics with psychology, biology with engineering, education with statistics, or history with technology. The danger is false equivalence: the same word may mean different things in different disciplines.

跨学科综合不是把几个领域的术语堆在一起,而是判断:哪些机制可以迁移,哪些定义必须重建,哪些方法不能直接比较。

The cross-disciplinary map | 跨学科综合地图

  • shared question
  • discipline-specific definitions
  • method compatibility
  • scale
  • mechanism transfer
  • analogy limits
  • evidence hierarchy
  • conflicting assumptions
  • translation across fields
  • synthesis architecture

1. Start with one shared question | 先有共同问题

Example:

Why do people continue or stop a learning habit?

Possible fields:

  • psychology
  • education
  • economics
  • behavioural science

2. Do not start with disciplines | 不从学科名开始

Start with the problem, then ask what each field contributes.

3. Same word, different meaning | 同词异义

efficiency can mean:

  • less time
  • less cost
  • less energy
  • higher output per input

Define before comparing.

4. Definition table | 定义表

TermField AField B
performancetest scorework output
riskprobability × harmuncertainty about return

5. Construct equivalence | 构念是否相同

Two fields may measure similarly named concepts differently.

6. Translate concept, not label | 翻译概念,不只翻标签

Ask what function the term performs inside each field.

7. Shared mechanism | 共享机制

A mechanism can sometimes transfer:

  • feedback
  • delay
  • selection
  • constraint
  • trade-off

8. Mechanism transfer test | 机制迁移测试

Ask whether the causal relationship remains meaningful in the new domain.

9. Scale matters | 尺度重要

A mechanism at individual level may not behave the same at group or system level.

10. Micro vs macro | 微观 vs 宏观

  • individual learner choice
  • classroom pattern
  • school policy
  • national system

Do not move conclusions across scale automatically.

11. Ecological fallacy | 生态谬误

A group-level pattern does not automatically describe every individual.

12. Individualistic fallacy | 个体到群体的错误外推

Individual cases do not automatically explain system-level outcomes.

13. Method compatibility | 方法是否兼容

Compare:

  • experiment
  • survey
  • historical archive
  • ethnography
  • simulation
  • observational data

14. Different methods answer different questions | 不同方法回答不同问题

Do not rank methods without asking what they are trying to establish.

15. Quantitative and qualitative evidence | 定量与定性

They may answer complementary questions:

  • how much?
  • how often?
  • why?
  • how experienced?

16. Evidence hierarchy is question-dependent | 证据等级取决于问题

A randomised trial may be strong for causality; an interview may be stronger for understanding lived experience.

17. Time scale | 时间尺度

History may study decades; psychology may study minutes or weeks. Results may not align because the time horizons differ.

18. Spatial scale | 空间尺度

Local behaviour and global systems can obey different constraints.

19. Measurement scale | 测量尺度

Be careful when one field uses precise instruments and another uses self-report or categorical coding.

20. Assumptions differ by field | 学科前提不同

One discipline may assume rational choice; another may foreground habit, identity or social norms.

21. Assumption matrix | 前提矩阵

FieldMain unitTypical assumption
economicschoice/marketincentives matter
psychologyindividual cognitionattention/memory matter
sociologygroups/institutionsnorms/structures matter

22. Do not force reconciliation | 不要强行统一

Sometimes different disciplines provide genuinely incompatible models.

23. Productive disagreement | 有价值的分歧

A synthesis can say:

The fields agree on the outcome but propose different mechanisms.

24. Complementarity | 互补

One field may explain mechanism while another explains context or scale.

25. Cross-disciplinary source roles | 来源角色

  • Field A defines mechanism.
  • Field B shows population pattern.
  • Field C explains institutional constraint.

26. Bridge concepts | 桥接概念

Useful bridge concepts often include:

  • feedback
  • adaptation
  • network
  • constraint
  • incentive
  • information

27. Bridge concepts are not identical across fields | 桥接词也不一定同义

Define the local meaning before transfer.

28. Analogy across fields | 跨学科类比

Use Lesson 089 discipline:

  • state mapped relation
  • state limit
  • return to literal mechanism

29. Avoid metaphor as fake synthesis | 不用比喻代替综合

Saying “the economy is an ecosystem” does not establish that ecological models transfer directly.

30. Terminology translation | 术语翻译

Sometimes one field’s technical term needs a plain-language paraphrase before another field can use it safely.

31. Preserve technical distinctions | 保留技术区别

Do not simplify two distinct technical concepts into one general word if the difference matters.

32. Shared variable, different interpretation | 同变量,不同解释

For example, time may be:

  • a cost
  • a resource
  • a delay
  • a developmental dimension

33. Cross-disciplinary claim ladder | 跨学科主张阶梯

  1. the fields describe similar patterns
  2. they share a possible mechanism
  3. the mechanism is supported in both
  4. the mechanism can transfer predictively

Do not jump from step 1 to step 4.

34. Evidence compatibility | 证据兼容性

Ask whether the evidence types can answer the same claim.

35. Source weighting across fields | 跨领域来源权重

Weight each source for the sub-question it can genuinely address.

36. Avoid prestige bias | 避免学科声望偏见

A more mathematical field is not automatically more relevant to every question.

37. Avoid novelty bias | 避免“新学科”偏见

New terminology does not automatically improve an older explanation.

38. Synthesis architecture | 综合架构

Possible structure:

  1. shared question
  2. definitions
  3. Field A mechanism
  4. Field B evidence
  5. Field C constraint
  6. agreement/conflict
  7. integrated conclusion

39. Issue-based, not discipline-by-discipline only | 按问题,不只按学科

Weak:

Psychology says… Economics says… Sociology says…

Stronger:

On motivation, psychology emphasises… while economics models…

40. Cross-disciplinary synthesis sentence | 综合句

Taken together, the evidence suggests that persistence depends on both individual retrieval success and the external costs of maintaining the routine.

41. Integrated model | 综合模型

An integrated model should show how contributions connect, not merely place them side by side.

42. Model boundaries | 模型边界

State where the integrated model is intended to apply.

43. Cross-disciplinary uncertainty | 跨学科不确定性

Different fields may use uncertainty differently. Preserve each source’s evidential language.

44. Cross-disciplinary citation | 来源归属

Keep ownership clear when claims move across fields.

45. Mandarin transfer: 学科术语中文译名可能相同 | 英文原义仍不同

Do not assume identical Chinese translation means identical disciplinary concept.

46. Mandarin transfer: “理论”范围不同 | theory 不总等于 理论

Scientific theory, informal theory and explanatory framework can have different status.

47. Reading practice A | 阅读 A

Psychology may explain why immediate feedback strengthens learning behaviour, while economics can model the cost of maintaining that behaviour over time. The two perspectives are compatible if feedback affects perceived benefit while time and effort affect cost.

What is the bridge concept?

48. Reading practice B | 阅读 B

Biological adaptation and organisational adaptation share the idea of adjustment under pressure, but the mechanisms differ substantially. Organisations make decisions through people and institutions; biological evolution does not require deliberate planning.

Identify the useful mapping and the critical limit.

49. Reading practice C | 阅读 C

A historical case may reveal how a policy developed, while a statistical study may estimate its average effect. Neither source type automatically replaces the other because they answer different questions.

Explain the complementarity.

50. Synthesis practice | 综合练习

Choose one question and use two disciplines to build:

  • shared question
  • definition table
  • method table
  • integrated claim
  • limit

51. Error clinic | 常见问题

ProblemRepair
Same word = same concept.Define by field.
I transfer a mechanism by analogy only.Demand field-specific evidence.
I rank methods globally.Match method to question.
I move individual findings to systems.Check scale.

52. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • terms seem same but conclusions conflict → definition problem.
  • analogy feels convincing but unsupported → transfer problem.
  • methods look incomparable → question-method mapping.
  • levels get mixed → scale problem.
  • synthesis is a list → integration architecture.

53. Seven-day training cycle | 七天训练

Day 1shared questions共同问题
Day 2definition tables定义
Day 3method compatibility方法
Day 4scale尺度
Day 5mechanism transfer机制迁移

54. Self-test | 自测

Define terms by discipline; distinguish scale and method; transfer mechanisms cautiously; explain where analogies fail; build an issue-based cross-disciplinary synthesis.

55. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Ask learners to define every shared term twice—once in each discipline.

Do not reward breadth unless relationships are explicit.

For Mandarin speakers, watch for identical Chinese translations hiding different English disciplinary meanings.

56. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Choose one complex problem.
  2. Select three disciplines.
  3. Define five shared terms.
  4. Compare methods.
  5. Check scale.
  6. Identify one transferable mechanism.
  7. State one analogy limit.
  8. Build an integrated model.
  9. Write a 700-word synthesis.
  10. Explain what each discipline contributes and cannot contribute.
