Advanced Hedging and Precision | 高级模糊限制与精确表达

The evidence suggests that the method may help some learners under certain conditions.

Advanced hedging is not weak writing. It is accurate writing. A strong C1-direction writer matches the force of the sentence to the strength, scope and limits of the evidence.

高级 hedging 不是“说得含糊”。它是在证据有限时不夸大,在证据清楚时也不无故变弱。

The precision map | 精确表达地图

  • claim strength
  • scope
  • probability
  • frequency
  • approximation
  • distance from source
  • boosting
  • evidence thresholds
  • fact vs interpretation

More cautious:

This method may improve learning.

Choose based on evidence.

2. Modal hedges | 情态词

  • may

The change may reflect a difference in task difficulty.

3. Probability phrases | 概率表达

  • is likely to
  • is unlikely to
  • appears to
  • seems to

4. Appears to | appears to

The policy appears to have reduced waiting times.

This signals an interpretation based on available evidence.

5. Seems to | seems to

The difference seems to be larger among younger participants.

6. Tends to | tend to

Shorter tasks tend to produce faster responses.

This expresses a general tendency, not an absolute rule.

7. Often / generally / typically | 频率限定

  • often
  • generally
  • typically
  • frequently

8. Scope hedges | 范围限定

  • some
  • many
  • a number of
  • in several cases
  • for certain learners

9. In many cases | 在很多情况下

In many cases, shorter feedback cycles are easier to sustain.

10. To some extent | 在一定程度上

The result may, to some extent, reflect prior experience.

11. Broadly | 大体上

The two sources are broadly consistent, although they differ in scope.

12. Relatively | 相对地

The task was relatively simple for experienced users.

Relative to what? Context should make the comparison clear.

13. Approximately / roughly | 近似数量

  • approximately 40%
  • roughly half
  • about three quarters

Do not invent precision that the data does not contain.

14. Around vs exactly | around vs exactly

around 100 participants and 100 participants are not identical claims.

15. Source-distance language | 来源距离

  • the report suggests
  • the author argues
  • the survey indicates
  • the participants reported

This keeps source ownership visible.

16. Reported vs observed | reported vs observed

Participants reported feeling more confident.

This is not identical to independently measured confidence or performance.

17. Evidence is consistent with… | 与证据一致

The evidence is consistent with the possibility that regular practice improves retrieval.

This is cautious when causality is not established.

18. Does not necessarily mean | 不一定意味着

Higher satisfaction does not necessarily mean higher productivity.

19. Cannot rule out | 不能排除

The study cannot rule out the possibility that prior experience affected the results.

20. It is possible that | 有可能

  • It is possible that the difference reflects sampling.

21. One possible explanation | 一种可能解释

One possible explanation is that the second group had more experience.

22. A plausible explanation | 合理解释

A plausible explanation is… is somewhat stronger than merely possible.

23. Suggests vs demonstrates | 强度不同

  • suggests → cautious
  • indicates → moderate/context-dependent
  • demonstrates → much stronger

Do not upgrade the source’s certainty during paraphrase.

24. May vs is likely to | 可能 vs 较大可能

may allows possibility. is likely to signals a stronger expectation.

25. Could vs must | 可能 vs 强推断

Choose based on evidence strength.

26. Hedging a causal claim | 限定因果

Too strong:

The new schedule caused productivity to rise.

Cautious:

The new schedule may have contributed to the rise in productivity.

27. Contributed to | 部分原因

contributed to avoids claiming a single cause.

28. Associated with | 与……相关

Higher practice frequency was associated with better test scores.

This does not by itself prove causation.

29. Correlated with | 相关

Use only when a statistical correlation is actually reported or calculated.

30. Hedging generalisation | 限定泛化

Too broad:

Students prefer digital learning.

Better:

Many students in this sample preferred digital learning.

31. Population belongs in the claim | 人群范围属于主张

adult learners in this study is not the same as learners.

32. Time scope | 时间范围

during the six-week trial limits what the result can claim about long-term performance.

33. Context scope | 情境范围

in highly structured tasks may be an essential limitation.

34. Boosters | 强化词

  • clearly
  • strongly
  • substantially
  • consistently

Boosters require evidence too.

35. Strongly suggests | 强烈表明

The repeated pattern strongly suggests that the effect is not random.

Still weaker than definitive proof.

36. Clearly | clearly

Use only if the point is genuinely clear from shared evidence. Do not use clearly to force agreement.

37. Over-hedging | 过度 hedging

Weak:

It might perhaps possibly be the case that…

Better:

It may be that…

38. Hedge stacking | 不要叠太多

One well-chosen hedge is usually stronger than several vague ones.

39. Do not hedge established facts unnecessarily | 清楚事实不要无故变弱

Weak:

The report may have been published in 2025.

If the date is known:

The report was published in 2025.

40. Fact vs interpretation | 事实 vs 解释

Fact:

The sample included 120 participants.

Interpretation:

The sample may be too small to support a broad generalisation.

41. Hedging recommendations | 限定建议

  • A reasonable approach may be…
  • It may be useful to…
  • Under these conditions, organisations could…

42. Strong recommendation when justified | 有依据时可以强

Emergency exits must remain clear.

Do not soften safety requirements into vague suggestions.

43. Spoken hedging | 口语限定

  • I think…
  • I’d say…
  • It seems to me…
  • probably
  • in most cases

44. Spoken softening vs uncertainty | 礼貌 vs 不确定

I think can soften interaction even when the speaker is fairly confident. Context matters.

45. Mandarin transfer: 可能/大概/一般来说 | 功能要细分

English offers several distinct ways to mark possibility, tendency, scope and source distance. Choose by function rather than translating one Chinese adverb repeatedly.

46. Mandarin transfer: “一定” | 强度要有证据

Do not translate rhetorical certainty into must/clearly/proves unless evidence supports it.

47. Reading practice A | 阅读 A

The results suggest that shorter practice sessions may improve consistency for some adult learners. However, the six-week duration means that the study cannot establish whether the pattern continues over longer periods.

Identify hedges for result, population and time limitation.

48. Reading practice B | 阅读 B

The evidence is broadly consistent with a positive effect, although differences between groups may partly reflect prior experience.

Which words narrow the conclusion?

49. Rewrite practice: weaken responsibly | 适当减弱

Rewrite:

The method works for everyone.

Possible:

The method appears to work well for many participants in this context.

50. Rewrite practice: strengthen responsibly | 有依据地加强

If five strong replicated studies agree, may may be too weak. Choose language that reflects the evidence rather than always hedging.

51. Error clinic | 常见问题

ProblemRepair
Everything is “maybe”.Choose precise hedge type.
I remove source uncertainty.Preserve stance.
I generalise beyond sample.Restore population/scope.
I hedge known facts.State them directly.
I use “clearly” without evidence.Remove or justify it.

52. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • claims too strong → certainty calibration.
  • claims too broad → scope control.
  • everything sounds weak → booster/threshold judgement.
  • paraphrase changes certainty → source-stability problem.
  • hedging sounds wordy → economy problem.

53. Retrieval lab | 提取练习

  • 证据表明…… → ______
  • 在很多情况下…… → ______
  • 在一定程度上…… → ______
  • 这并不一定意味着…… → ______
  • 不能排除…… → ______

Suggested answers: The evidence suggests… / In many cases… / To some extent… / This does not necessarily mean… / We cannot rule out…

54. Seven-day training cycle | 七天训练

Day 2scope/frequency范围频率
Day 3source distance来源
Day 4causality hedging因果
Day 5boosters强化
Day 6over-hedging edit编辑
Day 7400-word stance audit综合

55. Self-test | 自测

Calibrate possibility, tendency, scope, source distance and causality; use boosters only when justified; remove over-hedging; preserve source certainty during paraphrase.

56. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Mark claim strength as carefully as grammar.

Ask learners to underline the exact evidence that licenses each hedge or booster.

For Mandarin speakers, build a functional map of 可能、大概、通常、一定 and related English stance choices instead of one-to-one translation.

57. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Take ten claims of different evidence strength.
  2. Choose a precise stance for each.
  3. Limit population and context correctly.
  4. Use causal language cautiously.
  5. Use one justified booster.
  6. Remove three unnecessary hedges.
  7. Preserve stance in paraphrase.
  8. Write a 300-word evidence-based analysis.
  9. Audit every modal and scope word.
  10. Explain why each claim is no stronger or weaker than the evidence allows.
