Cohesion Across Long Arguments | 长篇论证中的衔接
A long argument feels coherent when the reader always knows what the current paragraph is doing, how it grows from earlier ideas, and why the next move is necessary.
At C1 direction, cohesion is not a matter of adding more however, therefore and moreover. Long arguments depend on recurring concepts, reference chains, paragraph functions, issue progression and controlled returns to the central question.
长篇论证的连贯不是“连接词越多越高级”。真正的连贯来自主题链、概念链、段落任务与论证推进。

The long-cohesion map | 长篇衔接地图
- central question
- theme chains
- reference chains
- paragraph jobs
- bridge sentences
- issue progression
- concept recurrence
- counterargument integration
- summary-return cycles
- macro-level editing
1. Every long text needs a central question | 中央问题
A long argument becomes unstable when each paragraph answers a different question.
2. Write the central question in one sentence | 一句话写核心问题
Example:
Under what conditions does flexible scheduling improve work outcomes?
3. Paragraphs answer sub-questions | 段落回答子问题
- What benefit is claimed?
- What evidence supports it?
- What limits the claim?
- What alternative explanation exists?
4. Paragraph job labels | 给段落命名
Before drafting, label each paragraph:
- frame
- evidence
- qualification
- counterpoint
- synthesis
- conclusion
5. One paragraph, one main job | 一段一个主任务
A paragraph can contain several functions, but one should dominate.
6. Theme chain | 主题链
Example:
- flexibility
- schedule control
- commuting pressure
- employee satisfaction
The concepts develop without abandoning the main issue.
7. Concept recurrence | 核心概念要反复出现
Strategic repetition of flexibility, performance and coordination can improve clarity.
8. Controlled repetition | 控制重复
Do not replace every repeated noun with a vague synonym.
9. Lexical variation with stability | 变化但不漂移
Useful:
- flexible scheduling → schedule flexibility → this flexibility
- employee satisfaction → reported satisfaction → this outcome
10. Reference chain | 指代链
The policy changed working hours. This change reduced peak commuting. The reduction was welcomed by many employees.
11. This + noun | this + 名词
- this change
- this finding
- this limitation
- this contrast
Usually clearer than a bare this.
12. Avoid unclear pronoun chains | 避免 it/this/they 漂移
When two possible referents compete, repeat the noun.
13. Bridge sentence | 桥接句
Improved satisfaction, however, does not answer the separate question of productivity.
This closes one issue and opens the next.
14. Bridge backwards and forwards | 桥要接前也接后
A strong bridge says what we have established and what still remains unresolved.
15. Issue progression | 议题推进
One possible sequence:
- define outcome
- examine benefits
- examine costs
- compare evidence
- resolve conditions
16. Known → new across paragraphs | 跨段已知→新信息
The final idea of one paragraph can become the opening theme of the next.
17. Paragraph ending as launch point | 段尾是下一段起点
This raises a second question: whether the same flexibility affects team coordination.
18. Do not end every paragraph with a mini-conclusion | 不要每段都重复总结
Some paragraphs should open the next move instead.
19. Topic sentence as local claim | 主题句是局部主张
A topic sentence should connect to the overall thesis and state the paragraph’s contribution.
20. Weak topic sentence | 弱主题句
Another important point is communication.
21. Stronger topic sentence | 更强主题句
Communication costs may limit the value of flexible scheduling in highly interdependent teams.
22. Paragraph evidence must match local claim | 证据要服务段落主张
Interesting evidence that answers a different question should move elsewhere.
23. Counterargument integration | 反方嵌入主论证
Do not create a token “however” paragraph with no real effect on your conclusion.
24. Counterargument can reshape the thesis | 反方可以改变结论
A strong counterpoint may force a more conditional final position.
25. Qualification paragraph | 限定段
Its job is to define where the main claim stops applying.
26. Synthesis paragraph | 综合段
Its job is to combine earlier evidence and explain the emerging pattern.
27. Return-to-question sentence | 回到问题
These findings therefore suggest that the value of flexibility depends less on location itself than on how coordination is organised.
28. Macro-signposting | 大结构路标
- The first issue is…
- A second question concerns…
- The evidence so far suggests…
- The final issue is…
29. Use macro-signposts sparingly | 路标要适量
Too many can make writing sound like a presentation script.
30. Section-level cohesion | 小节衔接
In very long writing, headings can support navigation, but paragraphs still need internal logic.
31. Cohesion through recurring criteria | 用标准保持连贯
When comparing options, reuse the same criteria:
- cost
- time
- reliability
- access
32. Avoid criterion drift | 不要比较时换标准
If paragraph 1 judges cost and paragraph 2 judges popularity without explanation, the comparison becomes unstable.
33. Cohesion through source roles | 用来源角色连贯
One source can establish a claim; another can qualify it; a third can offer an alternative mechanism.
34. Source recurrence | 来源可跨段回归
It is acceptable to return to a source later if it serves a new issue.
35. Avoid source dumping | 不要堆来源
Every cited source needs a clear argumentative job.
36. Pronoun economy | 指代经济
Once a source or concept is established clearly, shorter references are possible. Do not repeat full titles mechanically.
37. Cohesion with nominalisation | 名词化衔接
The team reduced meetings. This reduction…
Useful, but avoid making every sentence noun-heavy.
38. Cohesion with reduced clauses | 简化从句衔接
Reduced clauses can maintain information flow when the referent is clear.
39. Cohesion with clefts | 分裂句焦点
What remains uncertain is whether the effect lasts over time.
A purposeful cleft can refocus the argument.
40. Cohesion with inversion | 倒装强调
Only after the groups were compared did the limitation become clear.
Use rarely; it should mark a genuinely important turn.
41. Paragraph sequence test | 段落顺序测试
Remove paragraph numbers and ask whether the order still feels necessary.
42. Reverse-outline method | 反向提纲
After drafting, write one line for each paragraph:
- What does it claim?
- What evidence?
- Why is it here?
43. Detect duplicated jobs | 找重复段
If two paragraphs do the same job, merge or differentiate them.
44. Detect missing bridge | 找断裂处
If the reverse outline jumps suddenly, write a bridge or reorder.
45. Detect orphan evidence | 找孤立证据
Evidence with no explanatory connection to a claim should be moved, explained or removed.
46. Detect delayed thesis | 找迟到的主线
If the real argument appears only near the end, the introduction may need reframing.
47. Cohesion does not mean no digression | 连贯不等于不能转向
A deliberate side issue can be useful if the text explicitly explains why it matters.
48. Controlled return | 转出去后要回来
This broader issue matters here because…
49. Mandarin transfer: 中文长文可依赖话题延续 | 英语需要更显性架构
English analytical writing often benefits from more visible reference, paragraph jobs and issue progression.
50. Mandarin transfer: 连接词不能代替逻辑 | 不能“所以/但是”机械对应
Choose the relation first, then the English connector.
51. Reading practice | 阅读
Flexible scheduling may improve satisfaction by reducing commuting pressure. Satisfaction, however, is only one outcome. Productivity depends on task design, while coordination depends on how teams share information. These distinctions matter because a policy that performs well on one criterion may perform poorly on another. The question is therefore not whether flexibility is universally good, but under which conditions its benefits exceed its costs.
Map the concept chain and paragraph logic.
52. Writing practice: five-paragraph chain | 五段论证
Write five paragraph labels before drafting:
- frame
- benefit
- limit
- counterpoint
- synthesis
53. Editing practice: reverse outline | 反向提纲
Apply a one-sentence reverse outline to a 600-word draft.
54. Error clinic | 常见问题
| Problem | Repair |
|---|---|
| Every paragraph feels separate. | Build issue/theme chains. |
| Connectors are everywhere. | Use conceptual cohesion. |
| Evidence repeats. | Give each paragraph a job. |
| Pronouns become unclear. | Restore key nouns. |
| Argument drifts from question. | Use return-to-question sentences. |
55. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断
- paragraphs individually strong but disconnected → macro-cohesion.
- argument repeats → job differentiation.
- source use feels scattered → source-role planning.
- conclusion surprises reader → progression problem.
- reader loses topic → reference/theme chain.
56. Seven-day training cycle | 七天训练
| Day 1 | central question | 核心问题 |
| Day 2 | paragraph jobs | 段落任务 |
| Day 3 | theme/reference chains | 主题指代 |
| Day 4 | bridges | 桥接 |
| Day 5 | counterargument integration | 反方 |
| Day 6 | reverse outline | 反向提纲 |
| Day 7 | 800-word cohesion audit | 综合 |
57. Self-test | 自测
Build a central-question map, label paragraph jobs, maintain theme/reference chains, write bridge sentences, integrate counterarguments and diagnose cohesion using a reverse outline.
58. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
Mark argument movement before sentence-level elegance.
Ask learners to explain why paragraph 4 must come after paragraph 3.
For Mandarin speakers, make paragraph function and cross-paragraph reference visible during planning.
59. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务
- Plan an 800-word argument.
- Write one central question.
- Assign six paragraph jobs.
- Build two recurring concept chains.
- Use three bridge sentences.
- Integrate one real counterargument.
- Use source roles deliberately.
- Reverse-outline the finished draft.
- Repair one duplicated or missing paragraph job.
- Explain the macro-logic aloud.
