Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0076 · Lesson No.076 · B2 → C1 Transition
From B2 to C1 | 从 B2 走向 C1
C1 is not simply B2 with longer words. It is greater precision, flexibility, inference, source control and rhetorical judgement across demanding tasks.
This lesson is a bridge, not a certificate. Completing it does not automatically make a learner C1. The goal is to identify what must become more stable, more nuanced and more independent after strong B2 performance.
这一课是一张 B2→C1 升级地图:从“能处理复杂英语”走向“能在不熟悉、争议性、信息密集的任务中保持精确、灵活和独立”。

- dense listening and reading
- implicit meaning
- subtle stance
- long-form argument
- multi-source synthesis
- source conflict
- register switching
- lexical precision
- rhetorical control
- independent editing
- performance under unfamiliarity
- strategic repair
1. Strong B2 first | 先稳定 B2
If B2 reading, synthesis, listening or argument still collapses under ordinary pressure, fix that first.
2. C1 direction = flexibility under complexity | 复杂条件下的灵活控制
The learner increasingly handles language that is:
- longer
- denser
- less explicit
- more specialised
- more contested
3. Less predictable input | 更少预测性
C1-direction work includes topics where the learner cannot rely on memorised vocabulary or familiar arguments.
4. Listening beyond main ideas | 听力不只抓主旨
Track:
- stance shifts
- implication
- irony recognition where context supports it
- qualification
- speaker alignment
- source references
5. Multi-speaker complexity | 多人复杂讨论
Can you track three or more positions without confusing who believes what?
6. Implicit disagreement | 隐性分歧
Advanced speakers may disagree without saying “I disagree.” Listen for concession, reformulation and selective acceptance.
7. Listening to evidence status | 听证据地位
Is a speaker presenting:
- fact
- reported claim
- speculation
- personal experience
- hypothesis
8. Dense reading | 高密度阅读
Move toward texts with:
- long noun phrases
- reduced clauses
- subtle reference chains
- implicit assumptions
- multiple sources
9. Argument architecture | 论证结构
Identify:
- central claim
- subclaims
- evidence
- warrants
- counterarguments
- limitations
- implications
10. Assumptions become more important | 隐含前提更重要
Ask what the argument requires the reader to accept without explicit proof.
11. Evaluate competing explanations | 比较替代解释
Do not stop at the first plausible cause.
12. Source conflict | 来源冲突
When sources disagree, ask whether the conflict comes from:
- different data
- different populations
- different definitions
- different methods
- different values
13. Definition conflict | 定义冲突
Two sources may use the same word—such as success or effective—with different criteria.
14. Method conflict | 方法冲突
A survey and a performance test may produce different pictures because they measure different things.
15. Value conflict | 价值冲突
Sometimes evidence is similar but priorities differ: efficiency vs fairness, speed vs reliability, flexibility vs consistency.
16. Writer must define criteria | 作者要明确标准
Before judging “better”, define better for what purpose and under what conditions.
17. C1-direction synthesis | C1 方向综合
Synthesis should not merely combine findings. It should explain why sources align or diverge.
18. Position sources dynamically | 动态定位来源
- A establishes the baseline.
- B challenges its scope.
- C offers an alternative mechanism.
- D provides stronger evidence on one sub-question.
19. Writer stance becomes nuanced | 作者立场更细腻
Use:
- arguably
- to a limited extent
- on balance
- the evidence is consistent with…
- this remains uncertain because…
20. Avoid fake neutrality | 不要假装没有立场
A fair analysis can still reach a reasoned conclusion.
21. Avoid overconfidence | 避免过度确定
C1 strength includes knowing when a precise conclusion is impossible.
22. Longer speaking | 更长口语
Move toward 15–20 minute structured discussion with:
- position
- evidence
- counterargument
- clarification
- reformulation
- summary
23. Spontaneous reframing | 即时换框架
Can you change your explanation when the listener does not accept your original framing?
24. Precision under challenge | 被质疑时仍保持精确
Do not become more absolute simply because the discussion becomes harder.
25. Register switching | 语体切换
Express the same idea as:
- conversation
- professional email
- formal report
- presentation
- public explanation
26. Formality is not complexity | 正式不等于复杂
C1 professional writing can be concise and plain.
27. Lexical precision | 词汇精度
Develop:
- collocation
- connotation
- register
- semantic boundaries
- phrase frames
28. Near-synonyms | 近义词
Words such as claim, argue, suggest, imply, demonstrate differ in force and function.
29. Connotation | 隐含色彩
Two words can share dictionary meaning but carry different attitudes.
30. Idiomatic precision | 惯用精度
C1 does not require endless idioms. It requires natural phrase choice appropriate to context.
31. Phraseology over isolated vocabulary | 语块优先
- draw a distinction
- raise a concern
- reach a conclusion
- account for a difference
32. Rhetorical choice | 修辞选择
Use inversion, clefts, nominalisation, passive voice and reduction only when they improve focus, density or register.
33. Editing by purpose | 按目的编辑
Ask of every advanced structure: What job is it doing?
34. C1 writing length | C1 方向写作
Build toward 600–900 word analytical responses before attempting very long essays.
35. Paragraph architecture | 段落架构
Each paragraph should advance the argument, not merely add information.
36. Paragraph-level stance | 段落立场
A paragraph may:
- establish
- qualify
- challenge
- synthesise
- reframe
37. Multi-source architecture | 多来源架构
Organise by issue, not source sequence.
38. Source attribution becomes economical | 来源归属更简洁
Once ownership is clear, do not repeat full attribution mechanically in every sentence.
39. Paraphrase under density | 高密度改写
Preserve scope, certainty, cause and source ownership even when the original sentence is complex.
40. Summary under density | 高密度总结
Reduce detail without flattening argument structure.
41. Inference | 推断
C1 readers and listeners infer cautiously from discourse—not by guessing hidden intentions.
42. Strategic ambiguity | 有意保留不确定
Some writers deliberately avoid strong commitment. Recognise hedging rather than “correcting” it away.
43. Irony and figurative language | 反讽与比喻
Recognition depends heavily on context, shared knowledge and delivery. Avoid over-diagnosing irony from tone alone.
44. Cultural/pragmatic variation | 语用差异
Directness, politeness and rhetorical norms vary across English-speaking communities and professional contexts.
45. Independent research habits | 独立研究习惯
For real-world research tasks:
- verify claims
- check source quality
- compare dates
- track definitions
- separate evidence from commentary
46. Tool use | 工具使用
Independent learners use dictionaries, corpora, reference works and digital tools strategically. Independence is not tool avoidance.
47. Chinese support at C1 direction | C1 方向中文支持
Use Chinese selectively for conceptual comparison or highly technical clarification, but keep routine analysis and output in English.
48. Mandarin transfer: implicit subjects/reference | 长文仍要显性追踪
English analytical writing often needs clearer subject/reference chains across dense paragraphs.
49. Mandarin transfer: formal density | 不要把“高级”理解成名词堆积
Choose clear English over inflated formality.
50. Listening performance mission | 听力任务
Listen to a 10-minute multi-speaker discussion. Map:
- positions
- evidence
- implicit disagreement
- position changes
- uncertainty
51. Reading performance mission | 阅读任务
Read 2,000–3,000 words across three related sources. Identify source relationships and competing explanations.
52. Writing performance mission | 写作任务
Write 600–800 words with:
- issue framing
- multi-source synthesis
- counterargument
- evidence weighting
- qualified conclusion
53. Speaking performance mission | 口语任务
Hold a 15-minute discussion on a semi-unfamiliar issue with one challenge to your initial position.
54. Register performance mission | 语体任务
Rewrite one key argument for:
- a friend
- a manager
- a formal report
- a public explanation
55. B2→C1 weak-link map | 弱点路由
| Break | Likely owner |
|---|---|
| dense clauses | 069–070 |
| implicit listening | 071 |
| multi-source writing | 072 / 075 |
| rhetorical emphasis | 073–074 |
| stance/evidence | 066 / 068 |
| paraphrase drift | 067 |
56. Do not restart the entire course | 不要从头重来
Repair the first weak link that causes advanced tasks to fail.
57. Twelve-week B2→C1 bridge | 十二周过渡模型
| Weeks 1–2 | repair B2 weak links | 基础修复 |
| Weeks 3–4 | dense listening/reading | 高密度输入 |
| Weeks 5–6 | source conflict/synthesis | 来源综合 |
| Weeks 7–8 | 600-word argument | 长写作 |
| Weeks 9–10 | register/rhetoric | 语体修辞 |
| Weeks 11–12 | mixed unfamiliar missions | 陌生任务 |
This is a planning model, not a promised timeline.
58. Progress metrics | 进步指标
- minutes of sustained unfamiliar discussion
- source-position accuracy
- inference accuracy
- stance preservation in paraphrase
- argument density without loss of clarity
- register flexibility
- repair under challenge
59. Reading practice A | 阅读 A
Two studies may reach different conclusions without one necessarily being wrong. A survey can reveal what participants prefer, while a performance test can show how they actually perform. If the two measures point in different directions, the disagreement may reflect the question being measured rather than a failure of either method.
Identify claim, distinction, implication and qualification.
60. Reading practice B | 阅读 B
Advanced writing is often associated with complexity, yet complexity is only useful when it serves meaning. Dense nominalisation can compress information, but it can also obscure agency. Inversion can create emphasis, but frequent inversion can distract. What distinguishes stronger writing is therefore not the presence of advanced structures but control over when they improve communication.
Explain the argument and its counterpoint structure.
61. Writing practice | 写作
Write 600 words:
Does more complex language necessarily produce better communication?
Use evidence from at least two lessons in this course and one counterargument.
62. Speaking practice | 口语
Discuss for 12 minutes:
Should advanced learners focus more on complexity or precision?
Be prepared to revise your answer after a challenge.
63. Error clinic | 常见升级错误
| Problem | Repair |
|---|---|
| I chase rare vocabulary. | Deepen collocation and semantic precision. |
| I make sentences denser but less clear. | Edit by purpose. |
| I summarise sources without positioning them. | Explain relationships. |
| I infer too much. | Tie inference to evidence. |
| I become absolute under challenge. | Preserve calibrated stance. |
64. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断
- dense input slows everything → parsing/lexical depth.
- source conflict confuses me → source-positioning.
- writing is long but vague → argument architecture.
- speech collapses when challenged → spontaneous reformulation.
- formal writing sounds inflated → register control.
65. Seven-day C1-direction cycle | 七天 C1 方向循环
| Day 1 | dense listening | 听力 |
| Day 2 | multi-source reading | 阅读 |
| Day 3 | source-position notes | 综合 |
| Day 4 | 600-word writing | 写作 |
| Day 5 | 15-minute discussion | 口语 |
| Day 6 | register/rhetoric edit | 精度 |
| Day 7 | unfamiliar mixed mission | 综合 |
66. Self-test | 自测
Handle dense multi-source input; map assumptions and source conflicts; synthesise evidence; preserve uncertainty; use advanced grammar selectively; switch register; sustain unfamiliar discussion; explain why completing this lesson is not formal C1 certification.
67. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
Increase cognitive and discourse demands before simply adding more grammar.
Measure whether precision survives density, unfamiliarity and disagreement.
For Mandarin speakers, continue explicit work on reference chains, source stance and collocation while reducing routine translation dependence.
68. What Lessons 073–076 add | 第七十三至七十六课增加了什么?
| Lesson | New control |
|---|---|
| 073 | inversion and controlled rhetorical emphasis |
| 074 | cleft sentences and information focus |
| 075 | multi-source positioning and evidence weighting |
| 076 | B2→C1 precision, inference and flexibility bridge |
69. Final 90-minute transition mission | 最终 90 分钟任务
- Listen to a 10-minute multi-speaker discussion.
- Map positions and implied disagreements.
- Read three related sources totalling 2,000+ words.
- Build a source-position matrix.
- Write a 150-word synthesis.
- Write a 600-word analytical response.
- Use advanced structures only where purposeful.
- Rewrite one paragraph for a different register.
- Hold a 12-minute follow-up discussion.
- Diagnose the first weak link.
Consistent success is meaningful evidence that C1-direction work is appropriate. Formal certification still requires an appropriate formal assessment when needed.
