Multi-Source Synthesis and Source Positioning | 多来源综合与来源定位

Strong synthesis organises sources around the issue, not the order in which you read them.

At higher levels, source use is not a relay race: Source A, then Source B, then Source C. The writer must decide how sources relate—agreement, disagreement, different scope, different evidence strength, different populations, or different levels of certainty.

这一课训练“来源定位”:不是把来源一个个介绍,而是把它们放进同一张问题地图里。

The source-positioning map | 来源定位地图

  • issue-based notes
  • agreement
  • disagreement
  • scope
  • population
  • method
  • evidence strength
  • certainty
  • source role
  • synthesis sentence
  • writer position
  • limits

1. Weak source-by-source structure | 弱结构

Source A says X. Source B says Y. Source C says Z.

This reports sources but does not synthesise them.

2. Stronger issue-based structure | 更强结构

On flexibility, Sources A and B broadly agree, while Source C argues that the benefit depends on task type.

3. Build an issue table | 先做议题表

IssueSource ASource BSource C

4. Agreement | 来源一致

  • Both sources agree that…
  • Sources A and B similarly report…
  • There is broad agreement that…

5. Partial agreement | 部分一致

  • Both sources recognise X, although they differ on Y.

6. Direct disagreement | 直接分歧

  • Source A argues X, whereas Source B reaches the opposite conclusion.

7. Different scope | 范围不同

Two sources may not truly disagree if one studies adults and another studies children.

8. Different population | 不同人群

  • adult learners
  • secondary students
  • employees
  • volunteers

Population changes what can be generalised.

9. Different task | 不同任务

Evidence about reading may not automatically apply to speaking.

10. Different time scale | 时间尺度不同

A one-week study and a one-year study answer different questions.

11. Different method | 方法不同

  • survey
  • experiment
  • observation
  • interview
  • performance test

12. Preference vs performance | 偏好 vs 表现

A preference survey cannot by itself prove learning effectiveness.

13. Evidence strength | 证据强度

Weigh evidence by relevance and method, not by source count alone.

14. Certainty comparison | 确定度比较

  • Source A suggests
  • Source B reports
  • Source C concludes

Reporting verb choice should match source force.

15. Do not flatten certainty | 不要把所有来源写成一样确定

If one source says may and another says strongly predicts, preserve the difference.

16. Source role | 来源在文章里做什么?

A source may:

  • define the issue
  • provide evidence
  • challenge a claim
  • add a limitation
  • offer an alternative explanation

17. Source A as baseline | 基准来源

Sometimes one source gives the main framework and others refine or challenge it.

18. Source B as counterpoint | 反方来源

Use a source to represent a credible alternative, not a straw man.

19. Source C as scope limiter | 限定来源

A source may not disagree with the main claim but show where it stops applying.

20. Position sources relative to each other | 来源之间要有关系

Source B supports A’s general finding but narrows its application to tasks requiring less sustained attention.

21. Synthesis verbs | 综合动词

  • supports
  • extends
  • qualifies
  • contradicts
  • complicates
  • narrows
  • reinforces

22. “Complicates” | complicates

Useful when new evidence shows the issue is less simple than one source suggests.

23. “Qualifies” | qualifies

Useful when a source accepts a claim but limits its scope or strength.

24. “Extends” | extends

Useful when a source adds another population, context or mechanism.

25. Synthesis sentence architecture | 综合句结构

While A and B agree that flexible scheduling improves satisfaction, C suggests that its effect on performance depends on the type of work.

26. Source cluster | 来源群组

Several sources can be grouped:

Multiple sources report improved satisfaction, though the evidence on productivity remains mixed.

27. Avoid fake consensus | 不要制造假共识

Do not write “research shows” when your sources are limited, mixed or methodologically different.

28. Writer’s position | 作者自己的位置

Synthesis is not only source comparison. The writer must decide what the combined evidence reasonably supports.

29. Source voice vs writer voice | 来源声音 vs 自己声音

Mark clearly:

  • Source A reports…
  • Taken together, the evidence suggests…
  • I therefore argue…

30. Evidence before position | 先证据后立场

Your conclusion should emerge from the synthesis rather than being imposed before reading.

31. Counterevidence | 反证

Include credible evidence that challenges your preferred position.

32. Weigh, don’t hide | 权衡,不隐藏

Strong writing explains why one source may deserve more weight.

33. Relevance weighting | 相关性权重

A highly relevant smaller study may be more useful for a specific question than a large but unrelated survey.

34. Method weighting | 方法权重

Method matters only relative to the claim being made.

35. Recency weighting | 时效权重

For changing topics, newer evidence may be more relevant—but newer does not automatically mean better.

36. Authority weighting | 权威权重

Expertise matters, but claims still need appropriate evidence.

37. Position uncertainty | 保留不确定性

The sources support a cautious conclusion rather than a definitive one.

38. Multi-source paragraph | 多来源段落

Structure:

  1. issue sentence
  2. source agreement/difference
  3. evidence comparison
  4. interpretation
  5. qualified takeaway

39. Do not paragraph by source | 不要“一来源一段”自动化

Organise by your argument’s issues whenever possible.

40. Source transitions | 来源转换

  • Similarly…
  • By contrast…
  • However, this finding is limited by…
  • Extending this point…

41. Paraphrase integrity | 改写完整性

Preserve scope, certainty and causal force while synthesising.

42. Avoid accidental merging | 避免把来源混成一个

If A says one thing and B says another, do not create a blended claim neither actually makes.

43. Source matrix | 来源矩阵

SourceClaimEvidenceScopeLimit
Aflexibility helps satisfactionsurveyemployeesno performance measure
Bperformance stableteam dataone companyother changes occurred

44. Mandarin transfer: 中文综合也可隐含来源关系 | 英语要更显性

English source-based writing often benefits from explicit markers of agreement, contrast, scope and evidence strength.

45. Mandarin transfer: “有研究表明”不要无限泛化 | 来源要具体

Avoid vague source claims when you know which source produced the finding.

46. Reading practice A | 来源 A/B/C

Source A: A survey reports that flexible schedules improve employee satisfaction.

Source B: A performance study finds no decline in output after flexibility is introduced.

Source C: An interview study finds that coordination becomes harder for some teams.

Synthesis: Together, the sources suggest that flexibility may improve satisfaction without necessarily reducing output, although coordination costs can emerge in some team contexts.

47. Why the synthesis is cautious | 为什么结论谨慎

Different methods measure different outcomes, so the combined claim must stay within shared evidence.

48. Writing practice: issue map | 议题图

Take three short sources and organise notes by:

  • benefits
  • costs
  • conditions
  • evidence strength

49. Writing practice: source-position verbs | 来源定位动词

Write five sentences using:

  • supports
  • qualifies
  • contradicts
  • extends
  • complicates

50. Error clinic | 常见问题

51. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • I cannot compare sources → issue-map problem.
  • I compare but cannot weigh → evidence-evaluation problem.
  • I lose source ownership → attribution problem.
  • I overstate consensus → scope/certainty problem.
  • I have synthesis but no conclusion → writer-position problem.

52. Retrieval lab | 提取练习

  • B 限定了 A 的结论…… → ______
  • C 扩展了这个观点…… → ______
  • 综合来看…… → ______

54. Self-test | 自测

Build issue-based notes; identify agreement/disagreement; compare scope, population, method and certainty; position sources using precise verbs; write a synthesis paragraph and a qualified writer conclusion.

55. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Do not accept “three summaries” as synthesis.

Ask learners to draw lines between sources showing support, qualification, extension or contradiction.

For Mandarin speakers, make source ownership and certainty markers explicit throughout the synthesis process.

56. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Read three related sources.
  2. Build an issue matrix.
  3. Map claims, evidence and limits.
  4. Group agreements.
  5. Identify one true disagreement.
  6. Identify one scope difference.
  7. Use five source-position verbs.
  8. Write a 150-word synthesis.
  9. Write a 350-word issue-based response.
  10. Explain why your final conclusion is no stronger than the combined evidence.
