Linking Ideas Across Longer Texts | 长文本中的观点连接

A longer text works when each paragraph grows from what came before and prepares what comes next.
长文本真正连贯,是因为每一段都接住前文,并为下一段准备新的信息。

Sentence connectors such as because and however are only one part of cohesion. Longer texts also depend on topic continuity, reference chains, controlled repetition, substitution, paragraph jobs and logical development.

这一课训练“跨段连接”。目标不是堆很多连接词,而是让读者始终知道:我们在谈什么、这个代词指什么、这一段为什么出现、下一段为什么接得上。

The cohesion map | 连贯路线

  • topic continuity
  • known → new information
  • reference chains
  • controlled repetition
  • substitution
  • synonym limits
  • paragraph jobs
  • logical connectors
  • concession and qualification
  • signposting
  • cross-paragraph transitions
  • reader orientation

1. Longer text ≠ many sentences | 长文本不等于很多句子

A text can have perfect individual sentences and still feel disconnected.

2. Cohesion | 衔接

Cohesion is the visible language that connects ideas:

  • pronouns
  • repeated key nouns
  • connectors
  • substitution
  • reference expressions

3. Coherence | 连贯

Coherence is the deeper logic: the reader understands why each idea belongs and how the text develops.

4. Cohesion vs coherence | 衔接 vs 连贯

You can add many connectors without creating coherence.

5. Topic chain | 主题链

Example:

  • daily study
  • short sessions
  • regular retrieval
  • memory

Each idea grows naturally from the previous topic.

6. Keep the central noun visible | 核心名词要看得见

If the text is about public transport, repeat that term strategically instead of replacing it with five vague synonyms.

7. Controlled repetition is useful | 适度重复是好事

Beginning learners often think repetition is always bad. In explanatory writing, repeated key terms keep the topic stable.

8. Avoid empty synonym hunting | 不要为避免重复而乱找同义词

method, system, approach, strategy overlap but are not identical. Use the word that fits the meaning.

9. Reference chain | 指代链

Mei bought a new laptop. The device is lighter than her old one. It also has a longer battery life. This makes it easier to use while travelling.

  • laptop → device → it
  • this → the longer battery/overall feature result

10. Pronoun clarity | 代词清楚

If two possible nouns compete, repeat the noun.

11. Unclear reference | 指代不清

Anna spoke to Mei after she arrived.

Who arrived? Rewrite if it matters.

12. This + noun | this + 名词

Often clearer than this alone:

  • This change…
  • This problem…
  • This approach…
  • This result…

13. These + noun | these + 名词

  • These factors…
  • These differences…
  • These results…

14. Known → new information | 已知→新信息

Start a sentence with something the reader already knows, then add new information.

The train is faster than the bus. This speed advantage is important for commuters with early meetings.

15. New information becomes next sentence’s known information | 新信息接力

This creates a chain rather than separate statements.

16. Paragraph job | 段落任务

Each paragraph should do one main job:

  • introduce
  • explain
  • give evidence
  • compare
  • challenge
  • respond
  • conclude

17. Paragraph opening | 段首

The first sentence should orient the reader to the paragraph’s role.

18. Paragraph ending | 段尾

The ending can:

  • complete the point
  • show consequence
  • prepare the next paragraph

19. Bridge sentence | 桥接句

Cost is only one part of the decision. Time and reliability also matter.

This closes one criterion and opens the next.

20. Addition | 补充关系

  • also
  • in addition
  • another factor is…

21. Cause | 原因

  • because
  • because of
  • one reason is…

22. Result | 结果

  • so
  • as a result
  • therefore

23. Contrast | 对比

  • but
  • however
  • in contrast
  • while

24. Concession | 让步

  • although
  • even though
  • while it is true that…

25. Qualification | 限定

  • in many cases
  • for some learners
  • to some extent
  • it depends on…

26. Example | 举例

  • for example
  • for instance
  • such as

27. Sequence | 顺序

  • first
  • next
  • afterwards
  • finally

28. Emphasis | 强调

  • more importantly
  • the key point is…
  • what matters most is…

29. Summary / return | 总结 / 回主线

  • overall
  • in short
  • to return to the main point…

30. Don’t start every paragraph with “However” | 不要每段都 however

Choose the connector from the real logical relation, not habit.

31. Don’t stack connectors | 不要叠连接词

Weak:

However, on the other hand, but…

Choose one appropriate signal.

32. Connector scope | 连接词作用范围

However can contrast a whole previous point, not only one nearby word.

33. This result / this difference | 把逻辑关系命名

Useful phrases:

  • This result suggests…
  • This difference matters because…
  • This problem becomes more serious when…

34. Lexical chains | 词汇链

Topic: education

  • lesson
  • practice
  • feedback
  • learning

Related vocabulary helps maintain semantic continuity.

35. Avoid accidental topic drift | 避免跑题

If paragraph 1 is about cost and paragraph 2 suddenly discusses childhood without a reason, the reader loses the thread.

36. Ask “why is this paragraph here?” | 每段为什么存在?

If you cannot answer, the paragraph may not belong or needs a bridge.

37. Compare structure | 比较结构

A strong comparison can organise by:

  • criterion 1 across A/B
  • criterion 2 across A/B
  • criterion 3 across A/B

This is often clearer than describing A completely and then B completely.

38. Problem–solution structure | 问题—解决

  1. problem
  2. cause
  3. effect
  4. options
  5. recommended solution

39. Claim–counterpoint–response | 主张—反方—回应

  1. your claim
  2. reasonable counterpoint
  3. response/qualification

40. Narrative structure | 叙事结构

  1. scene
  2. event
  3. earlier cause
  4. response
  5. result/lesson

41. Reader orientation | 给读者路标

Longer texts need occasional explicit signposts:

  • The first issue is…
  • A second concern is…
  • This leads to…
  • The final point is…

42. Too much signposting sounds mechanical | 路标太多会僵硬

Use signposts when structure could otherwise be difficult to follow.

43. Topic sentence as contract | 主题句像合同

The paragraph should fulfil what the topic sentence promises.

44. Evidence must attach to claim | 证据要接在主张上

Do not drop an example into the paragraph without explaining why it matters.

45. Example → explanation | 例子之后解释

For example, Mei studies for fifteen minutes every morning. This routine works because it is short enough to continue even on busy days.

46. Quote / source idea → interpretation | 来源观点之后解释

At this level, simple attribution plus explanation is enough for many learning tasks.

47. Two-source synthesis | 双来源综合

Use:

  • Both sources…
  • Source A focuses on…, while Source B…
  • Together, they suggest…

48. Do not alternate A/B sentence by sentence without synthesis | 不要只轮流介绍

Group ideas by issue, then compare the sources inside that issue.

49. Mandarin transfer: topic chains | 中文话题链

Mandarin can maintain topic continuity with fewer explicit subjects. English longer prose often needs clearer pronouns, repeated nouns and paragraph signals.

50. Mandarin transfer: repeated nouns may feel unnatural in Chinese | 英语必要重复

In English explanatory writing, repeating a key noun can improve clarity.

51. Mandarin transfer: paired connectors | 成对连接词

Do not mechanically transfer Chinese connector pairs into English. Choose the English clause pattern that expresses the relationship.

52. Reading practice A | 阅读 A

Short daily study can help learners maintain contact with English. This regular contact makes retrieval more frequent, which may strengthen access to familiar vocabulary. However, short sessions cannot do every job. Extended reading, longer writing and sustained conversation require more time. For this reason, a balanced study plan may combine frequent short practice with occasional longer tasks.

Identify:

  1. topic chain
  2. reference expressions
  3. contrast
  4. final synthesis

53. Reading practice B | 阅读 B

Working from home reduces commuting time for many employees. This advantage can make daily schedules more flexible. At the same time, remote work may reduce spontaneous contact with colleagues. That loss of informal communication can make some tasks slower. A mixed work model attempts to keep the flexibility of remote work while restoring regular face-to-face contact.

Track how this advantage, that loss and the final sentence connect the text.

54. Writing practice: paragraph bridges | 段落桥接

Write three paragraphs. End paragraphs 1 and 2 with a sentence that prepares the next paragraph.

55. Editing practice: reference audit | 指代审计

Circle every:

  • it
  • this
  • that
  • they
  • these

Ask whether the referent is unmistakable.

56. Editing practice: connector audit | 连接词审计

For every connector, name the relationship: cause, result, contrast, example, sequence, qualification or summary.

57. Error clinic | 常见错误

ProblemBetter move
Every sentence starts a new idea.Build known→new chains.
I avoid repeating key nouns.Use controlled repetition.
I use however everywhere.Choose real logical relation.
Pronouns have multiple possible referents.Repeat the noun.
Examples appear without explanation.Explain why each example matters.

58. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • sentences correct but text feels fragmented → topic chain.
  • reader loses nouns → reference chain.
  • paragraphs repeat → paragraph-job planning.
  • connectors sound mechanical → logical relation control.
  • evidence feels dropped in → claim-evidence explanation.

59. Retrieval lab | 提取练习

  • 这个变化…… → ______

61. Self-test | 自测

Explain cohesion/coherence; build topic and reference chains; use controlled repetition; write paragraph bridges; classify connectors; repair unclear pronouns; organise compare/problem-solution/claim-counterpoint structures; synthesise two short sources.

62. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Do not mark only grammar at sentence level. Ask learners to map how ideas travel across the whole text.

Use colour-coded topic chains and arrows between paragraphs during diagnosis.

For Mandarin speakers, explicitly teach where English needs visible subject/reference and strategic repetition.

63. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Write 400–500 words.
  2. Use 3–4 paragraphs with distinct jobs.
  3. Maintain one central topic chain.
  4. Use clear reference chains.
  5. Use controlled repetition.
  6. Use connectors accurately.
  7. Bridge paragraphs.
  8. Include one counterpoint.
  9. Run reference and connector audits.
  10. Explain the text’s architecture aloud.
