How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.064 | From B1 to B2 | 从 B1 走向 B2

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0064 · Lesson No.064 · B1 → B2 Transition

From B1 to B2 | 从 B1 走向 B2

B2 is not simply longer English. It is more precise control of meaning, evidence, viewpoint, structure and register across longer tasks.
B2 不只是“说得更长、写得更多”,而是在更长任务中更准确地控制意思、证据、观点、结构和语体。

This lesson is a bridge, not a certificate. Completing it does not automatically make a learner B2. The purpose is to show what has to become stronger, faster, more flexible and more precise after stable B1 performance.

这一课是一张升级地图:从“能连贯表达”进一步走向“能分析、权衡、限定、反驳、综合,并根据对象与证据调整表达”。

The B1→B2 map | B1 到 B2 路线

  • longer spontaneous speaking
  • greater listening flexibility
  • denser reading
  • multi-source synthesis
  • longer structured writing
  • nuanced stance
  • evidence and counterargument
  • precision of certainty
  • register control
  • collocation and phrase depth
  • paraphrase and reformulation
  • independent editing
  • performance under variation

1. Stable B1 before B2 expansion | B1 先稳定

B2 growth is difficult if B1 listening, paragraph structure, repair or tense control still collapses under mild pressure.

2. B2 direction = precision + flexibility | 精度 + 灵活度

The learner should increasingly be able to choose among several possible expressions and explain why one fits best.

3. Longer spontaneous speaking | 更长自发口语

Move from 3–5 minutes on familiar topics toward longer discussion with:

  • position
  • reasons
  • examples
  • counterpoint
  • qualification
  • conclusion

4. Less script dependence | 更少依赖稿子

Use keywords, not memorised full sentences.

5. Respond in real time | 实时回应

Can you adapt when the other person changes the question or challenges your point?

6. Develop a point, not only repeat it | 深化,不重复

Add:

  • why
  • example
  • limit
  • exception
  • consequence

7. Counterargument | 反方观点

A stronger discussion can say:

One argument against this is… However…

8. Concession | 让步

  • Although this is true…
  • While I agree that…
  • Even if…

9. Qualification | 限定

  • to some extent
  • in most cases
  • for certain learners
  • under these conditions

10. Avoid absolute claims | 避免绝对化

B2-direction language increasingly matches claim strength to evidence strength.

11. Evidence language | 证据语言

  • This suggests…
  • This supports the view that…
  • This does not necessarily mean…
  • One possible explanation is…

12. Separate evidence from interpretation | 区分证据与解释

Evidence: what the source/data/text shows.
Interpretation: what you think that evidence means.

13. Listening grows in density | 听力更密

Move toward:

  • longer interviews
  • natural discussions
  • short lectures/explanations
  • multiple speakers
  • less repetition

14. Listen for stance | 听立场

Not only “what happened?” but:

  • Does the speaker agree?
  • How certain are they?
  • What do they imply?
  • What do they contrast?

15. Listen for discourse markers | 听篇章标记

  • however
  • in fact
  • on the other hand
  • to be fair
  • the main point is…

16. Listening notes become selective | 笔记更选择性

Capture argument structure, not transcript fragments.

17. Reading grows denser | 阅读更密

Move from 600–900 words toward longer texts with:

  • fewer explicit repetitions
  • more abstract vocabulary
  • more embedded clauses
  • multiple viewpoints
  • less obvious structure

18. Read for argument | 读论证

Identify:

  • claim
  • evidence
  • assumption
  • counterpoint
  • conclusion

19. Assumption | 隐含前提

Ask: What does the writer need us to accept for this argument to work?

20. Distinguish strong and weak evidence | 证据强弱

One example does not prove a universal claim.

21. Distinguish source voice and writer voice | 来源声音 vs 作者声音

Track who says what, especially in multi-source texts.

22. Multi-source reading | 多来源阅读

Compare:

  • agreement
  • difference
  • scope
  • evidence type
  • certainty

23. Synthesis | 综合

Do not summarise Source A, then Source B separately only. Organise by issue:

Both sources agree on X, but they differ on Y.

24. Writing grows longer | 写作变长

Move toward 300–500 word controlled tasks before attempting much longer work.

25. Longer writing needs architecture | 长写作需要结构

  • introduction
  • body paragraph 1
  • body paragraph 2
  • counterpoint/qualification
  • conclusion

26. Introduction | 引言

Define the issue and establish direction without giving every detail.

27. Body paragraph | 主体段

Claim → evidence/example → explanation → link forward.

28. Counterpoint paragraph | 反方段

Represent the counterargument fairly before responding.

29. Conclusion | 结论

Synthesise the argument rather than simply repeat the introduction.

30. Stronger cohesion | 更强跨段连接

Use topic/reference chains, controlled repetition, bridge sentences and logical progression.

31. Register range | 语体范围

Choose language for:

  • conversation
  • work email
  • formal report
  • opinion response
  • presentation

32. Neutral academic/professional register | 中性学术/专业语体

Avoid slang, unnecessary emotional language and inflated vocabulary.

33. Stance verbs | 立场动词

  • suggest
  • argue
  • indicate
  • appear
  • seem

34. Hedging | 谨慎表达

  • may
  • might
  • appears to
  • seems to
  • is likely to

35. Boosting | 强化表达

  • clearly
  • strongly
  • highly likely

Use only when evidence justifies stronger certainty.

36. Modal precision | 情态精度

Differentiate possibility, probability, deduction, obligation and recommendation.

37. Tense relationships remain important | 时态关系仍然重要

B2 does not replace B1 grammar. It combines it more flexibly inside longer discourse.

38. Conditionals expand | 条件句扩展

Use first, second and third conditionals according to reality/time. Mixed conditionals can be recognised later as combinations of time relationships.

39. Relative clauses grow denser | 关系从句更灵活

Use defining and non-defining clauses accurately when needed.

40. Passive voice becomes rhetorical choice | 被动成为信息选择

Ask whether agent or process/result deserves focus.

41. Reported speech becomes source management | 转述变成来源管理

Use reporting verbs to distinguish claim strength:

  • says
  • suggests
  • argues
  • claims
  • explains

42. Reporting verb choice matters | 转述动词带立场

Claims may sound more distancing than explains.

43. Vocabulary depth | 词汇深度

Develop:

  • collocation
  • register
  • word family
  • polysemy
  • phrase patterns

44. Collocation over rare synonyms | 搭配优先

reach a conclusion is more useful than memorising a rare synonym for conclusion.

45. Phrase frames | 短语框架

  • one reason for this is…
  • this raises the question of…
  • a possible explanation is…
  • the extent to which… — recognition/useful

46. Paraphrase grows more precise | 换说法更精确

Keep the same meaning while changing grammar and vocabulary without adding or removing certainty.

47. Summarising grows more selective | 总结更选择性

Compress supporting detail while preserving argument structure.

48. Critical reading without cynicism | 批判阅读不是怀疑一切

Ask what the evidence supports, what it does not support and what information is missing.

49. Discussion under disagreement | 有分歧时继续交流

Can you disagree, represent the other view fairly, ask for evidence and return to the issue?

50. Extended speaking structure | 长口语结构

  1. position
  2. reason 1
  3. example
  4. reason 2
  5. counterpoint
  6. qualification
  7. conclusion

51. B2-direction listening task | B2 方向听力

Listen to 4–6 minutes with two speakers. Recover:

  • main issue
  • each speaker’s position
  • evidence/examples
  • agreement/disagreement
  • final movement

52. B2-direction reading task | 阅读

Read 1,000–1,500 words across one or two sources. Map claim/evidence/counterpoint and write a synthesis.

53. B2-direction writing task | 写作

Write 350–500 words with 4–5 paragraphs, evidence, counterpoint, qualification and conclusion.

54. B2-direction conversation task | 对话

Maintain 12–15 minutes on a semi-familiar issue with spontaneous follow-ups and disagreement.

55. Performance under variation | 变化条件下表现

Change:

  • speaker
  • topic angle
  • time limit
  • source format
  • register

Stable ability survives reasonable variation.

56. Less Chinese dependence | 进一步减少中文依赖

Use Chinese strategically for difficult conceptual contrasts, but increasingly process familiar tasks entirely in English.

57. Mandarin transfer: explicit stance | 英语更常显性标立场

Longer English argument often benefits from explicit markers of certainty, concession and source attribution.

58. Mandarin transfer: reference in longer prose | 长文指代

Keep subject/reference chains visible across paragraphs; do not rely only on topic continuity.

59. Mandarin transfer: overformal vocabulary | 避免“难词=高级”

Clear collocation and precise stance matter more than rare vocabulary.

60. Twelve-week B1→B2 bridge | 十二周过渡模型

Weeks 1–2repair B1 weak links基础修复
Weeks 3–4longer listening/speaking输入输出
Weeks 5–6argument reading论证阅读
Weeks 7–8multi-source synthesis来源综合
Weeks 9–10350–500 word writing长写作
Weeks 11–12mixed performance missions综合迁移

This is a planning model, not a guaranteed timeline.

61. Progress metrics | 进步指标

  • minutes of spontaneous discussion
  • argument details recovered in listening
  • source synthesis accuracy
  • stance precision
  • paragraph architecture
  • repair under disagreement
  • register flexibility

62. Reading practice: balanced argument | 阅读 A

Flexible working can reduce commuting time and give employees greater control over their schedules. These benefits may improve satisfaction for some workers. However, flexibility does not automatically improve productivity. Team coordination, home working conditions and the type of task all influence the outcome. For this reason, the most effective policy may depend less on whether work is remote or office-based and more on how clearly expectations, communication and responsibilities are organised.

Identify:

  1. main claim
  2. qualification
  3. counterpoint
  4. final synthesis

63. Reading practice: evidence calibration | 阅读 B

A small survey found that many participants preferred short daily study sessions. The result suggests that convenience may influence study habits, but it does not prove that short sessions produce better learning for every learner. A stronger conclusion would require evidence about long-term performance, different age groups and different types of task.

Explain what the evidence supports and what it does not support.

64. Writing practice: 400-word balanced response | 写作

Topic: Is flexibility always better for learning?

Include:

  • clear position
  • two supporting reasons
  • evidence/example
  • counterargument
  • qualification
  • conclusion

65. Speaking practice: twelve-minute discussion | 口语

Discuss one semi-familiar issue. Partner must challenge one claim. Respond with evidence, qualification and a return to the main thread.

66. Error clinic | 常见升级错误

ProblemBetter move
I make sentences longer but less precise.Control stance and structure.
I use difficult synonyms inaccurately.Deepen collocation.
I summarise sources separately only.Synthesise by issue.
I state conclusions stronger than evidence.Calibrate certainty.
I avoid counterarguments.Represent and respond fairly.

67. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • long listening loses speaker positions → stance tracking.
  • reading understands facts but not argument → claim/evidence mapping.
  • writing is long but repetitive → architecture/development.
  • source use becomes copying → paraphrase/synthesis.
  • discussion collapses under challenge → spontaneous reasoning/repair.
  • formal writing sounds inflated → register/collocation.

68. Retrieval lab | 提取练习

  • 这表明…… → ______
  • 这并不一定意味着…… → ______
  • 一个可能的解释是…… → ______
  • 虽然这一点成立…… → ______
  • 两个来源都认为…… → ______
  • 总体而言…… → ______

Suggested answers: This suggests… / This does not necessarily mean… / One possible explanation is… / Although this is true… / Both sources suggest… / Overall…

69. Seven-day B2-direction cycle | 七天 B2 方向循环

Day 1multi-speaker listening听立场
Day 212-minute discussion口语
Day 3argument reading阅读
Day 4multi-source notes综合
Day 5400-word writing写作
Day 6stance/register editing精度
Day 7mixed B2-direction mission综合

70. Self-test | 自测

Track stance in multi-speaker listening; analyse claim/evidence/assumption; synthesise two sources; write 4–5 paragraphs; use qualification and counterargument; calibrate certainty; adapt register; sustain a 12-minute discussion; explain why completing this lesson is not itself proof of B2 certification.

71. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Increase complexity by task demands, not by stuffing more rare grammar into every lesson.

Measure whether learners can maintain precision when material becomes longer, less repetitive and more contested.

For Mandarin speakers, continue to teach explicit reference, stance and evidence language while using Chinese only where it increases conceptual precision.

72. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

Complete one 75-minute B2-direction mission:

  1. listen to a 5-minute two-speaker discussion
  2. map each speaker’s position
  3. read two related sources totalling 1,200–1,500 words
  4. take issue-based notes
  5. write a 120-word synthesis
  6. write a 350–450 word reasoned response
  7. include counterargument and qualification
  8. hold a 10–12 minute discussion
  9. adjust one section to a more formal register
  10. diagnose the first weak link

If this works with reasonable independence, accurate source handling, controlled stance and repair, that is meaningful evidence that B2-direction study is appropriate. Formal certification still requires an appropriate formal assessment when needed.
