Third Conditional for Past Hypotheticals | 第三条件句与过去假设
If I had left earlier, I would have caught the train.
如果我早点出发,我本来就会赶上那班火车。
The third conditional talks about a past situation that did not happen and imagines a different past result. It is useful for reflection, explanation and regret—but it should not become a machine for blaming people after events are over.

1. Core form | 核心结构
If + had + past participle, would have + past participle.
- If I had left earlier, I would have caught the train.
- If she had studied more, she would have felt more prepared.
2. The past did not happen this way | 现实没有这样发生
Sentence:
If I had left earlier, I would have caught the train.
Reality:
- I did not leave earlier.
- I did not catch the train.
3. If-clause = alternative past cause | if 从句 = 假设的过去原因

- If we had booked earlier…
- If she had called me…
4. Result clause = imagined past result | 结果句 = 假设的过去结果
- …I would have known.
- …we would have saved money.
- …I would have helped.

The if-clause uses the same had + past participle form learned in Lesson 057.

Past participle after ‘d usually signals had; base verb often signals would.

could have expresses a possible ability or option in the unreal past.

might have gives a less certain alternative result.

Use specific evidence and avoid rewriting complex events as one person’s single mistake.

Use a comma when the if-clause comes first.

This can express an unused past option.

This may be past deduction, so context matters.

The first had is auxiliary; the second is the participle of have.

41. Mandarin transfer: English marks both halves morphologically | 英语两边都标形式
Chinese can depend more on context and adverbs such as 当时/本来. English uses had + participle and would have + participle.

- 我本来可以帮忙。 → I could have helped.

- 我本来应该早点走。 → I should have left earlier.
This is related but not identical to a full third conditional.
