A rule is only as accurate as its conditions, limits and exceptions.

Advanced learners often know the main proposition but lose precision around its edges. They write “X works” when they mean “X works under these conditions.” They write “Y is required” when they mean “Y is useful but not mandatory.” They write “Z is a limitation” when they actually mean a practical constraint. They call every warning a caveat, every boundary an exception, every threshold a requirement and every condition a cause.

These errors matter because conditional vocabulary controls the architecture of reasoning. It tells the reader whether something must happen first, whether it merely limits what can happen, whether a statement has exceptions, whether a result should be read with a caveat, whether a rule holds only above a threshold, and whether an outcome is contingent on another event.

Oxford defines a prerequisite as something that must exist or happen before something else can happen; Cambridge defines a requirement as something that must be done or is needed. Oxford distinguishes restriction as a rule or law that limits action, constraint as a fact or decision that limits what can be done, and limitation as a broader rule, fact or condition that limits something. Cambridge defines a caveat as a warning or statement that limits a more general statement, while Oxford defines an exception as something not included in a general statement or rule.

Those are not dictionary trivia. They are different reasoning jobs.

Requirement asks what must be present. Constraint asks what narrows the possible. Exception asks what falls outside the rule. Caveat asks how the rule should be interpreted.

Its specific job is: where does the statement start, where does it stop, and what has to be true for it to hold?


Part I — The architecture of conditions | 第一部分:条件语言的结构

1. Start by asking what kind of boundary you mean | 先问:你说的是哪一种边界?

Before choosing a word, classify the job. Are you saying something must happen first? That a resource limits what can be done? That a rule excludes one case? That a result should be interpreted cautiously? That an effect appears only above a certain level? Or that one event depends on another? These are not stylistic alternatives. They encode different logical structures. A learner who skips this classification often reaches for the broad word condition and then produces vague sentences such as “There are some conditions affecting the result.” At C1–C2, the target is to make the boundary visible: prerequisite, constraint, exception, caveat, threshold, contingency or another precise relation.

2. Condition is the broad parent concept | condition 是一个很宽的上位概念

A condition can be a state of affairs, a requirement, a circumstance under which something is true, or a term in an agreement. That breadth makes it useful, but also dangerous. “Under these conditions” can be precise if the conditions were just specified; “because of the condition” can be unclear if the reader does not know whether you mean a medical condition, contractual condition, experimental condition or necessary prerequisite. Treat condition as a category word. When the subtype matters, move down the hierarchy: experimental condition, boundary condition, prerequisite, eligibility condition, contractual condition, operating condition.

3. “Under conditions of X” describes an environment | under conditions of = 在某种环境/状态下

Academic and technical English often uses under conditions of X to specify the environment in which a result was observed: under conditions of high load, under controlled conditions, under low-light conditions, under conditions of uncertainty. This construction does not itself say that X caused the result. It defines the setting. Compare “performance fell under high-load conditions” with “high load caused performance to fall.” The second sentence adds a causal arrow. Lesson No.032 protects that boundary. In advanced writing, environment language should remain environment language unless evidence supports causation.

4. “On condition that” creates an explicit requirement | on condition that = 条件是

On condition that introduces a requirement attached to permission, agreement or outcome: “You may use the data on condition that the source is acknowledged.” The phrase is stronger and more formal than casual if because it foregrounds the requirement as a term. This is common in agreements, permissions and negotiations. Do not use it when you merely mean temporal possibility. “I will call you on condition that I have time” sounds like a negotiated requirement; “I will call you if I have time” sounds like ordinary contingency.

5. Conditional on / conditional upon makes dependence explicit | conditional on = 以…为条件

Conditional on is useful when an action, approval, result or right depends on another condition: “Funding is conditional on satisfactory progress.” “The offer is conditional upon regulatory approval.” The adjective frames a dependency, not merely a general circumstance. A learner should store the whole construction: X is conditional on Y. Then ask what happens if Y fails. If the answer is “X does not happen or does not remain valid,” the construction is likely appropriate.

6. Contingent on also encodes dependence, often with uncertainty | contingent on = 取决于/视…而定

Contingent on/upon is a high-value C1–C2 phrase in professional, policy and academic English. It says an outcome depends on something else that may or may not occur: “The launch is contingent on approval.” “Further recruitment is contingent upon funding.” This differs from a simple prerequisite in tone and event structure. A prerequisite is something that must exist before another thing can proceed; contingent on often foregrounds the dependency and uncertainty of the outcome. In project language, this distinction matters: a prerequisite may be a stable requirement; a contingency may remain unresolved.

7. Subject to is a compact condition-and-limitation frame | subject to = 以…为条件/受…制约

Subject to is highly productive: subject to approval, subject to availability, subject to change, subject to review, subject to certain conditions. Its core job is to tell the reader that something is not unconditional. “Prices are subject to change” means the current price is not guaranteed. “The plan is subject to approval” means implementation depends on approval. This construction is powerful because it compresses a full condition into a short phrase. It is also easy to overuse. In plain communication, “if approved” may be clearer than “subject to approval” when no formal register is needed.

8. Subject to can also mean exposed to | polysemy warning

Lesson No.013’s polysemy rule matters. “The proposal is subject to approval” is not the same structure as “participants were subjected to noise.” The adjective phrase subject to can also mean likely to experience something: “The region is subject to flooding.” The verb phrase subject somebody to X means cause them to experience X. Store these separately. If you collapse them into one Chinese translation such as “受…影响”, grammar errors will follow.

9. Dependent on is broader than conditional on | dependent on = 依赖

Dependent on can describe logical, practical, financial, biological or causal dependence: “Success is dependent on accurate input.” “The plant is dependent on regular rainfall.” It may describe a continuing dependency rather than a one-time condition for permission. Compare: “Access is conditional on payment” versus “System performance is dependent on network stability.” The first feels like a gate; the second describes a functional dependency. At C1–C2, the distinction is not absolute, but it gives a useful default.

10. Depend on can be causal, predictive or practical | depend on 的关系需要上下文

“The result depends on sample size” may mean sample size causally affects the result, that the interpretation changes by sample size, or that a decision requires sufficient sample size. Do not assume the verb tells the whole relationship. Ask whether the dependency is causal, conditional, procedural or evidential. When stakes are high, make it explicit: “Statistical power depends partly on sample size”; “Approval depends on completing the audit”; “The recommendation depends on whether the result replicates.”

11. Requirement says something must be done or needed | requirement = 必须满足/需要的事项

Cambridge defines a requirement as something you must do or something you need. Common frames include meet the requirements, satisfy a requirement, minimum requirement, legal requirement, entry requirement, requirement for X, requirement that…. The noun is stronger than preference and normally stronger than recommendation. “English proficiency is a requirement” means the applicant must possess it; “English proficiency is desirable” does not. In professional writing, confusing requirement and preference can change obligations.

12. Requirement has both mandatory and needs-based uses | requirement 不总是法律式强制

A software system may have “memory requirements”; a family may have “housing requirements”; a job may have “entry requirements.” Some uses mean formal conditions, others mean necessary needs or specifications. Therefore, “requirement” should be read with its domain. If the reader needs to know whether failure has a formal consequence, specify: mandatory requirement, minimum requirement, technical requirement, user requirement.

13. Mandatory means required by rule, authority or necessity | mandatory = 强制性的

Mandatory is stronger than recommended, preferred and often stronger in institutional force than generic necessary. “Training is mandatory” normally means participants are required to attend. “Training is necessary” may express practical necessity without saying who imposes the rule. Store the contrast: mandatory = formally required; necessary = required by logic, need or circumstances. They overlap but do not perform identical jobs.

14. Necessary means required for the outcome or purpose | necessary = 必要

“A passport is necessary for international travel” states practical necessity in many contexts. “Approval is necessary before deployment” states a procedural gate. But necessary does not automatically mean sufficient. If approval is necessary, other requirements may still remain. This becomes one of the most important advanced reasoning distinctions in the lesson: necessary condition ≠ sufficient condition.

15. Sufficient means enough to produce/justify the relevant outcome | sufficient = 充分的

Sufficient says the amount, condition or evidence is enough for a purpose: sufficient evidence, sufficient time, sufficient resources, sufficient grounds, sufficient condition. It does not mean “good” or “strong” in a general sense. “The evidence is sufficient to reject the explanation” says the evidence crosses an adequacy threshold for that inference. “The evidence is strong” evaluates quality or persuasive force more broadly. At C1–C2, these distinctions prevent fuzzy evaluation.

16. Necessary and sufficient form a logical pair | 必要条件与充分条件

A necessary condition must be present, but may not be enough. A sufficient condition is enough, but may not be required if another route exists. For a simplified example: oxygen may be necessary for ordinary human survival, but oxygen alone is not sufficient for survival because food, water, suitable temperature and many other conditions matter. In professional reasoning, this vocabulary is invaluable because people often confuse “needed” with “enough.”

17. Do not use “necessary and sufficient” casually | 这是高承诺逻辑词

Saying X is “necessary and sufficient” means the condition both must be present and by itself meets the relevant criterion. This is far stronger than saying X is “important”, “helpful”, “a prerequisite” or “a major factor”. Use the phrase only when the logic or domain definition genuinely supports it.

18. Prerequisite is a before-condition | prerequisite = 必须先存在/发生

Oxford and Cambridge define a prerequisite as something that must exist or happen before something else can happen. Common frames include prerequisite for X, prerequisite to X, essential prerequisite, prerequisite knowledge, prerequisite course. The temporal/logical “before” element distinguishes it from a general requirement. “A visa is a requirement for entry” and “registration is a prerequisite for enrolment” may overlap, but the second explicitly frames sequencing.

19. Precondition is close to prerequisite but often more formal/systemic | precondition = 前提条件

Oxford treats precondition as a synonym of prerequisite: something that must happen or exist before something else can happen. In political, policy and analytical writing, precondition often appears when discussing negotiations, system states or enabling circumstances: a precondition for reform, without preconditions, an essential precondition for negotiation. Learn it as a formal relation word, not as a decorative replacement for condition.

20. Requisite is formal necessity language | requisite = 所需/必需

Cambridge defines requisite as necessary or needed for a particular purpose; Oxford notes phrases such as the requisite experience, the requisite number. It is formal and often appears before a noun. “The requisite skills” means the skills that are required. Do not use it merely because it sounds more advanced than necessary. It is useful when the register and noun pattern are conventional.

21. Criterion is a standard for judgment, not always a requirement | criterion = 判断标准

A criterion is a standard used to judge, decide or classify something. Some criteria are mandatory thresholds; others are dimensions used in evaluation. “Cost is one criterion for selection” does not necessarily mean a fixed cost limit exists. “Applicants must meet all eligibility criteria” makes the criteria function as requirements. Learn the noun in its frame: criterion for X, selection criterion, evaluation criterion, meet a criterion, satisfy the criteria.

22. Criterion and condition are not interchangeable | criterion 评估;condition 决定是否成立/发生

Suppose a scholarship considers academic performance, leadership and financial need. These may be selection criteria. An age limit may be an eligibility condition. The distinction matters because criteria can be weighted or compared, whereas conditions often act as gates. Some systems combine both. Advanced writing should tell the reader which architecture applies.

23. Eligibility is about permission or qualification to enter | eligibility = 资格

Eligibility criteria, eligibility requirement, eligible for, eligible to do form a useful professional vocabulary network. Eligibility does not say the person will be selected; it says they satisfy the conditions needed to be considered or receive something. This distinction is crucial: eligible ≠ selected; eligible ≠ entitled; eligible ≠ guaranteed.

24. Qualification can mean credential or limitation | qualification has two important senses

First, qualification can mean an official skill, credential or achievement needed for work/study. Second, in reasoning language, qualification can mean a statement that limits or modifies a broader claim: “The conclusion requires an important qualification.” Keep these senses separate. The second sense is close to caveat but often less warning-like: it adds conditions or limits so the original statement becomes more accurate.

25. Qualify a statement means make it less absolute | qualify = 给主张加限定

“The method works” may become “The method appears effective for short retrieval tasks under controlled conditions.” The added scope and condition language qualifies the claim. This is not weakness. Academic Phrasebank explicitly encourages caution where exceptions may exist. Qualification protects truth by preventing a local result from becoming a universal rule.

26. Condition words can be grammatical or lexical | 不能只靠 if

English conditional meaning appears through grammar (if, unless, provided that, as long as) and through lexical constructions (subject to, contingent on, prerequisite for, requirement that, dependent on). Advanced learners need both. The lexical forms are especially important in professional and academic English because they allow conditions to be packaged as nouns and adjectives, linked across paragraphs and compared with other constraints.

27. If is broad conditional grammar | if can encode many relations

If can express real conditions, hypothetical conditions, logical conditions, politeness and discourse framing. Because it is so broad, replacing every if with a more formal expression is not an upgrade. Use lexical alternatives only when they add a useful relationship: “If approved” is often better than “contingent upon the granting of approval.” C1–C2 control includes knowing when simple conditional grammar is already optimal.

28. Unless means except if / if not | unless 压缩一个否定条件

“The launch will proceed unless approval is withdrawn” means the launch proceeds except if approval is withdrawn. Learners sometimes combine unless with another unnecessary negative and create confusion. Store its logic carefully. Also notice that unless is not the same as except: unless introduces a condition; except excludes a member/case.

29. Provided/providing that sets a condition | provided that = 只要/前提是

“The approach is acceptable provided that the data are anonymised.” This construction frames the following clause as a condition that must be satisfied. It is common in formal and semi-formal English. Compare with as long as, which can be more conversational: “You can use the room as long as you leave it clean.” Learn register along with logic.

30. Assuming that introduces a working assumption | assuming that ≠ provided that

“Assuming that demand remains stable, the current capacity is sufficient.” Here the writer temporarily accepts a proposition for analysis. It is not necessarily a requirement imposed on an actor. This is hypothesis/scenario language. The assumption may later be tested. Confusing assuming that with provided that changes whether the clause is an analytical premise or an operational condition.

31. Given that introduces an accepted/established premise | given that = 鉴于/考虑到

“Given that the sample is small, the result should be interpreted cautiously.” The clause provides a premise or relevant fact. It is not usually a future condition to be satisfied. Compare: “provided that the sample reaches 100” (future requirement) versus “given that the sample contains only 25 cases” (existing premise). This distinction sharpens academic reasoning.

32. In the event that is formal contingency language | in the event that = 如果发生…

Contracts, policies and contingency plans often use in the event that for a possible future event: “In the event that the system fails, switch to the backup service.” In ordinary prose, if is usually simpler. Use the formal construction when the register or risk-management function justifies it, not because it looks advanced.

33. In case is preventive, not always conditional | in case = 为防万一

“Take a charger in case the battery runs low” means take the charger now as preparation for a possible later event. It is not identical to “if the battery runs low, take a charger.” The temporal/action structure differs. This is a classic example of why Chinese translation alone is insufficient: both may map loosely to “如果/以防”, but English encodes different planning relationships.

34. Whether or not removes dependency on the condition | whether or not = 无论是否

“The review will proceed whether or not the final dataset is complete.” This explicitly says the action does not depend on the condition. That makes it a useful contrast to conditional on. Building such oppositions helps learners internalise logical architecture: conditional on Y means Y matters to whether X occurs; whether or not Y means X occurs in both cases.

35. Part I checkpoint: build the condition map | 第一部分检查点

Before moving into limitations and exceptions, make sure these distinctions are stable. Condition is broad. Requirement says something must be done or needed. Prerequisite/precondition says something must exist first. Necessary means required; sufficient means enough. Conditional on/contingent on/subject to express dependency with different registers and nuances. Criterion is a standard for judgment. Eligibility concerns qualification to enter or receive. Qualification can mean a credential or a limiting modification to a claim. The next part asks a different question: what stops, narrows or weakens what is possible?

Part II — Constraints, restrictions, limitations and exceptions | 第二部分:限制、约束、局限与例外

36. Constraint describes something that limits what can be done | constraint = 现实/制度/决定造成的约束

Oxford defines a constraint as a thing that limits something or limits freedom to act. Typical examples are time constraints, budget constraints, legal constraints, technical constraints, capacity constraints. A constraint often exists because the world, system or prior decision gives you fewer options. This makes it a powerful planning word. “Time is a constraint” means the deadline narrows what can realistically be done. It does not necessarily mean the plan is flawed. Constraints can be accepted, managed, relaxed, removed, imposed or worked within.

37. Constraint is different from problem | constraint ≠ problem

A problem is a difficulty requiring attention or solution. A constraint is something that limits available choices. A small budget may be a constraint even if nothing has gone wrong. If the team has only three hours, time is a constraint. If the server has crashed, that is a problem. Sometimes the same fact can be both: insufficient staffing may constrain capacity and also become an operational problem. The value of the word lies in the relation you want to foreground.

38. Constraint invites optimisation language | constraint often appears in decision systems

Once a constraint is named, the next question becomes “What can we optimise within it?” Common collocations include work within constraints, operate under constraints, impose constraints, relax constraints, remove constraints, binding constraint, severe constraint. In economics, engineering and operations, a binding constraint can mean the constraint currently limiting the optimal solution. In ordinary professional English, do not borrow technical meanings unless they fit the domain.

39. Restriction is more often a rule or imposed limit | restriction = 被规定的限制

Oxford describes a restriction as a rule or law that limits what can be done. Typical phrases include travel restrictions, import restrictions, age restrictions, restrictions on access, impose restrictions, lift restrictions. Compare: “Budget is a constraint” versus “There is a restriction on overseas travel.” The first may arise from available resources; the second sounds like a rule or imposed boundary. That distinction is not absolute in every context, but it is a strong default for learners.

40. Constraint can exist without authority; restriction often points to control | 约束不一定有人规定

Weather can constrain a construction schedule; gravity constrains engineering design; memory capacity constrains cognitive performance. Nobody “imposed” gravity. A restriction more naturally suggests a rule, policy or controlling action. If you write “gravity restrictions”, the phrase sounds unusual unless a technical field has conventionalised it. Learning this distinction prevents translation from Chinese 限制 into one default English word.

41. Limitation is broader and often evaluates capacity | limitation = 局限/限度

Oxford and Cambridge treat limitation broadly: a rule, fact or condition that limits something, and in plural form the weaknesses or things something cannot do well. This gives the word two high-value academic uses. First, a limitation on X can be an imposed limit. Second, a study, method, theory or tool can have limitations: aspects that reduce what it can explain, measure or generalise. This second use is central to research and evaluation.

42. Study limitation is not automatically study failure | limitation ≠ fatal flaw

Manchester Academic Phrasebank provides many ways to acknowledge limitations while retaining value: a small sample, limited scope, missing variables, uncontrolled factors or unavailable measurements. A limitation says the conclusion must be bounded or interpreted with care. It does not necessarily mean the research is invalid. Mature academic vocabulary therefore avoids dramatic all-or-nothing judgments such as “the study is useless because it has limitations.” Every design has boundaries; the key question is what those boundaries prevent you from claiming.

43. Weakness is evaluative; limitation can be more neutral | weakness vs limitation

Weakness more directly evaluates something as a deficient aspect: “A major weakness of the model is its dependence on self-report data.” Limitation can be more neutral and structural: “A limitation of the study is the small sample.” In some contexts they overlap. The choice changes tone. If you are critiquing a flawed method, weakness may be justified. If you are defining scope responsibly, limitation may be better.

44. Drawback is a disadvantage, not a logical boundary | drawback = 缺点/代价

A drawback is a negative feature that makes an option less attractive or effective: “The main drawback is cost.” It does not necessarily stop the option from being used. A constraint limits what you can do; a drawback makes an option less desirable; a limitation marks what a method or result cannot do; a restriction imposes a rule. These distinctions are ideal for decision writing because they prevent every negative feature from being called a “problem”.

45. Disadvantage compares options | disadvantage = 相对不利点

Disadvantage often appears in explicit evaluation: advantages and disadvantages, a major disadvantage, be at a disadvantage. If Option A costs more than Option B, higher cost may be a disadvantage of A. If the cost ceiling prevents A from being selected at all, the budget becomes a constraint. The same underlying fact can be named differently depending on the decision architecture.

46. Shortcoming often implies inadequacy relative to expectation | shortcoming = 不足

A shortcoming is something that is not as good as it should be. It is more evaluative than limitation. “The model’s main shortcoming is that it ignores temporal variation.” This suggests the model could reasonably be expected to handle that issue. Use it when critique is intended. Do not automatically convert every bounded scope statement into a shortcoming.

47. Flaw is stronger still | flaw = 缺陷

A flaw implies a defect, often one that undermines correctness, design or quality. “A flaw in the experiment” is much stronger than “a limitation of the experiment.” When a learner writes flaw simply because it sounds advanced, the critique can become unfair. Build an evaluation ladder: constraint / limitation / drawback / shortcoming / weakness / flaw. It is not a perfect strength scale, because the words encode different relations, but the ladder reminds you that tone and judgment increase.

48. Boundary is where a category, effect or rule stops | boundary = 边界

Boundary can be physical, conceptual, statistical or operational. In vocabulary learning, a boundary tells us where one category stops and another begins. Lesson No.028 used category boundaries; Lesson No.029 used scalar boundaries; this lesson uses rule boundaries. “The model works within a narrow boundary of operating temperatures” defines an operating range. “The evidence does not establish the boundary at which the effect disappears” says the threshold has not been located.

49. Scope is the range a statement, study or task covers | scope = 范围

Manchester Phrasebank repeatedly uses scope to limit what a paper or study attempts: “beyond the scope of this study”, “the scope was limited in terms of…”. Scope is not exactly a limitation. A deliberately narrow scope may be appropriate. A limitation often explains why a conclusion cannot travel further. Compare: “This article focuses on vocabulary retrieval” (scope choice) versus “The study included only twelve participants” (limitation affecting generalisation).

50. Ceiling and floor can be metaphorical thresholds | ceiling/floor = 上限/下限

Advanced analytical English often uses metaphorical ceiling and floor: price ceiling, spending ceiling, performance ceiling, minimum floor, evidence ceiling. Earlier lessons used “evidence ceiling” as a teaching metaphor: a claim should not be more specific or stronger than the evidence allows. Such metaphors are useful when they clarify a limit, but define them when the audience may not know the domain convention.

51. Cap is an imposed maximum | cap = 上限限制

A cap is a maximum limit, often imposed by policy or design: price cap, spending cap, emissions cap, cap on fees. It is more concrete than generic limitation. “There is a cap of 30 participants” tells the reader the exact upper boundary. This is a good example of Lesson No.028’s specificity principle: if the maximum is known, name it rather than saying “participation is limited”.

52. Quota is an allocated or required quantity | quota = 配额

A quota is not simply a limit. It usually refers to a fixed share, amount or number allocated, permitted or required. Import quota, sales quota, admissions quota each encode a quantitative institutional rule. If the system permits “up to 50”, that is a cap; if it allocates “50 places to Category A”, that may be a quota. These lexical distinctions matter in policy and business writing.

53. Limit is the broad everyday word | limit = 最常用的广义界限

Limit can be noun or verb and covers maximums, boundaries and constraints: speed limit, time limit, limit access, limit exposure, within limits. It is often the best word. Do not replace it with constraint or restriction merely to sound more technical. Choose the narrower term only when it adds the intended relation.

54. Caveat limits interpretation rather than action | caveat = 解读时必须记住的保留/警告

Cambridge defines a caveat as a warning to consider before taking further action, or a statement that limits a more general statement. In academic prose, “There is one important caveat” tells the reader that the broad conclusion needs a qualification. A caveat does not necessarily prohibit action. It tells the reader: “Do not read the preceding claim without remembering this condition or warning.”

55. Caveat is stronger and more warning-like than qualification | caveat vs qualification

Both can limit a broad claim. A qualification often modifies a proposition to make it more precise. A caveat foregrounds caution. Compare: “The method is effective, with the qualification that benefits were observed only in short tasks” versus “One caveat is that no delayed test was administered.” The first narrows the statement. The second warns that interpretation should remain cautious because important evidence is missing.

56. Caveats should be specific | vague caveat language is not enough

Weak: “There are some caveats.” Stronger: “One caveat is that the sample contained only advanced learners, so the result should not be generalised to beginners.” The useful caveat names the missing information, the affected claim and the direction of caution. This mirrors good error diagnosis: a label without mechanism is less useful than a label plus consequence.

57. Reservation is an expressed doubt or condition | reservation = 保留意见

“I support the proposal, with some reservations” means the speaker has concerns that prevent unqualified endorsement. Reservation is more interpersonal/opinion-oriented than limitation. It can be useful in meetings, reviews and diplomatic writing: express reservations, have reservations about, without reservation. Do not confuse it with booking/reserving a seat.

58. Qualification can narrow a generalisation | qualification = 对陈述的限定

Suppose you write “All advanced learners benefit from corpus use.” A qualification might be: “The benefit is most evident when learners already understand basic dictionary use and have guidance in interpreting concordance lines.” This does not reject the original idea; it specifies the conditions under which it is more defensible. Academic caution often works by adding such qualifiers rather than replacing the entire claim with vague hedging.

59. Qualifier can be lexical or conceptual | qualifier = 限定成分

A qualifier may be a word such as most, generally, under these conditions, in this sample, for short tasks. These expressions reduce or specify scope. Lesson No.020 treated hedges as stance devices; here we focus on boundary control. “Students improved” becomes “Most students in the intervention group improved on the immediate test.” The sentence is longer but logically cleaner because population, proportion and measurement are bounded.

60. Exception removes a case from a general statement | exception = 不包含在一般规则中的个案

Oxford and Cambridge define an exception as a person or thing not included in a general rule, list or expected pattern. Common frames include exception to the rule, with the exception of X, make an exception, without exception, no exception. An exception does not necessarily weaken the entire rule. It tells you the rule is not universal.

61. Exception and caveat are different | exception = case outside; caveat = warning about interpretation

“All systems passed, with one exception” identifies a case that failed. “The systems passed, with one caveat: only basic load testing was performed” does not identify a failing system; it limits how confidently we should interpret the pass result. This distinction is extremely useful in reports and evaluations.

62. Exception and exclusion are different | exception vs exclusion

An exception is a case that falls outside a general rule or pattern. An exclusion is the act or result of deliberately leaving something out. “Patients under 18 were excluded from the study” describes design. “One participant was an exception to the usual pattern” describes relation to a generalisation. Do not use exception when you mean an exclusion criterion.

63. Exclusion criterion is a technical study/design phrase | exclusion criterion

In research and eligibility systems, inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria determine who or what enters the sample or process. This is not the same as “exceptions to the result”. One happens before/at selection; the other describes cases relative to a later pattern or rule.

64. Except / except for remove items from a set | except language

“All lessons were completed except Lesson 5.” “Except for one missing file, the archive is complete.” Except is direct set-exclusion language. It differs from unless, which introduces a condition, and from besides, which usually adds rather than excludes. These small distinctions are common sources of bilingual learner error.

65. Apart from / aside from can exclude or add depending on context | apart from 的双重功能

“Apart from the final question, the paper was straightforward” excludes the final question from the general statement. In some contexts, apart from can mean “in addition to”. Because of this ambiguity, except for or in addition to may be clearer when precision matters.

An outlier is a value or case markedly different from others, especially in data analysis. One outlier may be an exception to a pattern, but not every exception is an outlier. Do not label inconvenient cases “outliers” without a statistical or methodological basis. The word has technical weight.

An anomaly is something that deviates from what is normal or expected. It may deserve investigation because it challenges the model or indicates measurement error. But calling a case anomalous should not become a way to discard evidence. In scientific reasoning, anomalies can be informative precisely because they expose a rule’s boundary.

68. Edge case is a system/design term | edge case = 边缘情形

In software, engineering and product design, an edge case is an unusual situation near the boundary of normal operation. It is not a universal synonym for “exception”. The phrase is especially useful when the rule still applies but behaviour becomes unusual at extreme inputs. This anticipates Part III’s threshold vocabulary.

69. Exception handling is a system concept | exception handling

In computing, an exception can mean a special condition or problem that interrupts normal processing, and exception handling refers to mechanisms for responding to it. This technical sense should be learned separately from the general-language sense “case outside the rule”. Domain labels protect polysemy.

70. Part II checkpoint: classify the negative edge | 第二部分检查点

When something narrows or weakens a situation, ask which job it performs. A constraint limits available options. A restriction is often a rule or imposed limit. A limitation marks a boundary of capability or generalisation. A drawback/disadvantage makes an option less attractive. A weakness/shortcoming/flaw evaluates deficiency at increasing or changing levels of criticism. A caveat warns the reader about interpretation. A qualification narrows a broad statement. Part III — Thresholds, ranges and decision boundaries | 第三部分:阈值、范围与决策边界

71. Threshold is the point at which something changes | threshold = 发生变化/触发判断的临界点

A threshold is a boundary point: below it, one rule may apply; above it, another rule may apply. Examples include income threshold, detection threshold, pain threshold, eligibility threshold, threshold for intervention, threshold value. Threshold vocabulary is essential because many real systems are not simply “on/off”. A learner may say “high temperature causes failure” when the more precise statement is “failure becomes much more likely above a temperature threshold.” The word helps you locate where the relationship changes rather than merely saying that two variables are related.

72. Threshold does not automatically mean a hard physical boundary | 阈值可以是制度、统计或操作定义

Some thresholds are physical or biological. Others are policy decisions: an age threshold, income threshold or score threshold. Others are analytical conventions: a significance threshold, alert threshold or classification threshold. Advanced writing should therefore ask who or what defines the threshold. “The threshold is 70” may mean nature changes at 70, or simply that the organisation has chosen 70 as the cut-off for action. Those are different claims.

This distinction matters whenever a classification line is conventional rather than natural.

74. Trigger is the event/level that initiates action | trigger = 触发条件/触发事件

A threshold is a boundary; a trigger is what initiates a response. In a monitoring system, “CPU usage above 90%” may be the threshold, while “three consecutive readings above 90%” may trigger an alert. 75. Activation condition names what must be true before a mechanism starts | activation condition

Technical fields often talk about activation conditions, initiation conditions, start conditions, enabling conditions. These phrases answer “What must be true before the process begins?” They can be more useful than vague requirements because they locate the condition within a sequence. For example, “Authentication is an access requirement” versus “Successful authentication is the activation condition for account access.” The second sentence foregrounds process logic.

76. Enabling condition makes something possible but may not guarantee it | enabling condition = 使…成为可能的条件

An enabling condition removes a barrier or creates the possibility of an outcome. It is not necessarily sufficient. Reliable internet access may be an enabling condition for online learning, but it does not guarantee learning. This phrase is especially useful in policy and systems thinking because it prevents the learner from calling every supportive factor a “cause”. Enabling conditions make outcomes possible; causal factors may determine whether and how strongly those outcomes occur.

77. Disabling condition blocks operation | disabling condition = 使系统/过程无法继续的条件

In systems, logic and policy writing, a condition can disable a process without being a “problem” in the ordinary sense. For instance, “insufficient clearance is a disabling condition for launch.” This is useful when you need to distinguish between a negative circumstance and an explicit rule in a control system. The phrase is domain-sensitive; use it where systems or procedures naturally talk about enable/disable states.

78. Minimum threshold sets the lower boundary | minimum threshold / minimum requirement

A minimum threshold or minimum requirement tells the reader the least amount needed. “A minimum score of 70 is required.” “The minimum threshold for inclusion is 20 observations.” Do not write minimum threshold when minimum or threshold alone already carries the necessary meaning, especially in plain prose. Redundancy is acceptable when the domain convention uses the full phrase, but not as automatic “formal” style.

79. Maximum threshold is less common and needs care | maximum limit / upper threshold

When you mean the greatest permitted value, upper limit, maximum permitted value, ceiling or upper threshold may be more natural than maximum threshold. Choice depends on domain. An alert may have an upper threshold; a regulation may impose a maximum limit. Do not build compounds simply by stacking formal-looking nouns. Verify the conventional phrase.

80. Lower bound and upper bound define a range | lower/upper bound = 范围边界

Bound is common in mathematics, statistics, optimisation and technical English. “The lower bound is 10” and “the upper bound is 50” define a permitted or estimated interval. Outside technical contexts, minimum/maximum may be clearer. The key conceptual move is to recognise that many claims hold within a range rather than everywhere.

81. Range defines the interval where a variable or rule operates | range = 范围

Useful phrases include operating range, acceptable range, normal range, temperature range, within the range, outside the range. A range is not itself a requirement; it describes an interval. “The sensor operates between 0°C and 50°C” defines an operating range. “The sensor must remain within that range” turns the range into a requirement for proper operation.

82. Tolerance describes permitted variation | tolerance = 容许偏差

In engineering, manufacturing, measurement and quality systems, tolerance is the amount of variation that is acceptable. “±0.5 mm tolerance” means the object can deviate from the target by a defined amount. This is a stronger, more technical relation than vague phrases such as “about the same”. In general English, tolerance also has social and biological senses, so domain labels matter.

83. Margin is distance from a threshold or boundary | margin = 余量/差距

Safety margin, margin of error, narrow margin, comfortable margin each describe distance from a boundary or uncertainty around a value. “The system operates with a 10% safety margin” is different from saying “the threshold is 90%.” Threshold names the boundary; margin names the distance from it. Keeping this distinction clear improves technical explanations.

84. Margin of error is not a generic “possible mistake” | margin of error = 统计/估计误差范围

In statistics and polling, margin of error has technical meanings. Do not use it casually for every uncertainty. If the source gives an estimate with a ±3 percentage-point margin of error, report it accurately. If you simply mean the method may be wrong, use uncertainty, measurement error, possible error or another appropriate term.

85. Buffer is protective space/resources beyond the minimum | buffer = 缓冲余量

A buffer creates room before a constraint becomes binding: time buffer, capacity buffer, financial buffer, safety buffer. It does not change the underlying threshold; it increases distance from it. In planning vocabulary, this distinction helps: constraint narrows choices, buffer provides flexibility within or before that constraint.

86. Contingency is a possible future event and/or plan for it | contingency = 可能发生的情况/应变方案

A contingency may be an event that could occur or a provision made for that possibility. Common phrases include contingency plan, contingency fund, contingency measure, unforeseen contingency. It differs from condition: a condition is part of the logic of whether something holds; a contingency is a possible event/state that planning must accommodate. “Funding is contingent on approval” uses the adjective; “we have a contingency plan if approval is delayed” uses the noun.

87. Fallback is what you use when the preferred option fails | fallback = 备用方案

Fallback option, fallback plan, fallback position describe a secondary route. A fallback is not a contingency itself; it is often the response to a contingency. In Lesson No.025, circumlocution is a lexical fallback when the exact word is unavailable. This systems vocabulary transfers naturally across language learning, business and technical contexts.

88. Default is what happens if no alternative is chosen | default = 默认状态

A default is the standard option/state used unless something else is specified. “The default setting is 10 minutes.” “If the user does not choose a language, English is the default.” This is different from a fallback, which is usually invoked after failure or unavailability. A default operates first unless overridden.

89. Override changes or bypasses a default/rule | override = 覆盖/优先于既定规则

In systems and policy writing, an override allows another instruction to take precedence. “Safety rules override normal scheduling priorities.” This creates a hierarchy of rules. It is different from an exception: an exception says a case falls outside the rule; an override says another rule or authority supersedes it.

90. Exemption removes an obligation for a person/case | exemption = 免除

An exemption is formal permission not to meet a requirement or rule: tax exemption, exemption from a requirement, grant an exemption, qualify for an exemption. Compare with exception: an exception may simply be a case outside a general pattern; an exemption is usually institutional and permission-based. “The student is exempt from the language requirement” means the obligation does not apply to that student.

91. Waiver gives up/enforces a right or requirement differently | waiver = 放弃权利/豁免文件

Waiver is common in legal, administrative and sports contexts. A fee waiver may remove a payment requirement; signing a waiver may involve giving up a right or claim. This term is more specific and institutional than generic exception. Do not use it unless the policy or legal structure genuinely involves a waiver.

92. Proviso is a formal limiting condition | proviso = 附带条件

Proviso is formal and often legal/policy-oriented: “The agreement was accepted with the proviso that funding be reviewed annually.” It is close to condition and caveat but more contractual. Cambridge even lists proviso as a synonym for caveat in one sense. For most learners, it belongs in recognition vocabulary unless their domain frequently uses it.

93. Clause is the textual form of a condition in agreements | clause = 条款

A clause in a contract or policy is a section containing a rule or condition. Do not confuse this legal/document sense with the grammatical sense of a clause. Domain context decides. “The termination clause allows either party to…” names the textual location of the rule, not the logical condition itself.

94. Provision is a rule or arrangement included in a document | provision = 条款/规定/准备

Provision can mean a clause/rule in a legal or policy document, or the act of supplying something. “The policy contains a provision allowing…” is formal institutional English. Learners should not use provision as a decorative synonym for condition. It foregrounds that the rule is formally provided for in the document/system.

95. Stipulation is a formally specified condition | stipulation = 明文规定的条件

A stipulation is a clearly stated condition or requirement, usually in formal agreements: “The contract includes a stipulation that data remain confidential.” The verb stipulate means specify as a condition. Because this word is formal, use it where the act of formally specifying matters.

96. Thresholds can be sharp or gradual | not every boundary is a cliff

Some systems have hard thresholds: below 18, a rule applies; at 18 or above, another applies. Other relationships change gradually. A learner may wrongly turn a gradual trend into a hard cut-off because threshold vocabulary sounds precise. If evidence shows performance declines progressively as load increases, do not invent a single “failure threshold” unless the system or analysis identifies one.

97. Transition zone is useful when change is gradual | transition zone = 过渡区

Where behaviour changes over an interval rather than at one point, terms such as transition range, transition zone, grey area may be more accurate than a single threshold. “Performance begins to degrade between 80% and 90% utilisation” describes a transition range. “The threshold is 85%” may falsely imply a sharp switch.

98. Grey area is informal/neutral metaphor for unclear boundary | grey area = 模糊地带

Grey area is useful in law, policy, ethics and classification when the boundary is not clear. It is less technical than transition zone. “This case falls into a legal grey area” says existing categories do not resolve it cleanly. Do not overuse the phrase where a formal uncertainty measure is available.

99. Borderline means near a classification boundary | borderline = 临界

A borderline case/result lies near the boundary between categories. This does not mean the case is necessarily abnormal. It means classification is sensitive to the threshold. In high-stakes contexts, explaining borderline status is often more honest than pretending the category is clear.

100. Threshold effects need evidence | threshold effect = 超过边界后关系改变

A threshold effect implies that the relationship changes once a variable crosses a certain level. This is a technical claim and should be supported analytically. Do not call any non-linear relationship a threshold effect without evidence. Lesson No.032’s causal discipline applies: a threshold can describe an observed pattern without automatically explaining why the effect changes.

101. Saturation is where additional input yields little/no additional effect | saturation = 饱和点/饱和状态

In science, business and learning, saturation can describe a point beyond which more input produces limited additional effect. It is domain-sensitive: market saturation, oxygen saturation, data saturation in qualitative research each mean different things. Do not carry one domain’s technical definition into another. The general idea is a boundary where additional input stops producing the same marginal change.

102. Tipping point suggests a critical change in system behaviour | tipping point = 转折临界点

Tipping point is common in public, environmental, economic and social writing. It often implies that accumulating change reaches a point after which system behaviour changes substantially or becomes difficult to reverse. It can be rhetorical. In technical contexts, prefer a defined threshold if one exists. Do not call every noticeable change a tipping point.

103. Breakpoint/changepoint are technical analytical terms | breakpoint / change point

Statistical, engineering and computing contexts may use breakpoint or change point for a location where behaviour/regime changes. These are more technical than threshold. Use the field’s terminology rather than importing them for stylistic variety. A C1–C2 learner should recognise them but deploy them only when the domain supports the term.

104. Decision rule connects evidence to action | decision rule = 决策规则

A threshold becomes operational when linked to a rule: “If the score falls below 70, review is required.” The threshold is 70; the decision rule specifies what happens. This distinction is useful in exams, policy, risk management, diagnostics and software. It prevents the learner from saying “70 is the rule” when 70 is actually the boundary inside a larger rule.

105. Part III checkpoint: locate the boundary and the response | 第三部分检查点

Threshold vocabulary answers several different questions. A threshold/cut-off marks a boundary. A trigger initiates action. A range defines acceptable/observed values. Tolerance permits variation. A margin is distance from a boundary. A buffer creates protective room. A contingency is a possible future event or plan for it. A fallback is the backup response. A default is the normal state if nothing else is chosen. An override supersedes another rule. An exemption/waiver removes an obligation in a formal system. Part IV — Applying condition vocabulary in real reasoning | 第四部分:把条件、限制与例外真正用进推理

106. Academic generalisations need visible boundaries | 学术概括必须把边界写出来

One of the main reasons academic writing contains so many condition, limitation and qualification expressions is that research claims rarely apply everywhere. Manchester Academic Phrasebank explicitly notes that academic writers often avoid absolute certainty and over-generalisation because exceptions may exist. A strong learner therefore learns to attach boundaries to claims: in this sample, under these conditions, within the observed range, for short-term outcomes, among advanced learners, subject to the limitations described below. These phrases are not decorative hedging. They tell the reader where the claim is intended to hold.

107. “Under these conditions” is a compact scope protector | under these conditions

Suppose a retrieval exercise improves immediate recall in a controlled lesson. “The method works” is broader than the evidence. “The method improved immediate recall under these conditions” preserves the observation without pretending the effect is universal. The phrase is especially valuable when several experimental or operational conditions were specified earlier and repeating them all would be cumbersome. But do not use it if the antecedent conditions are unclear; the reader must know exactly what “these” refers to.

108. “Within the limits of…” marks an evidential boundary | within the limits of

“Within the limits of the present dataset, the pattern appears stable.” This phrase tells the reader that the claim is bounded by the evidence source. It is stronger than vague self-protection such as “maybe” because it names the reason for caution. Advanced writing improves when caution becomes specific: sample size, measurement, range, time period, missing variables or design choice.

109. “Subject to the limitation that…” is formal but useful | subject to the limitation that

This construction can connect a broad proposition to a specific caveat: “The model is useful for short-term prediction, subject to the limitation that it was trained on a narrow population.” Use it sparingly; plain English may often be better: “The model is useful for short-term prediction, but it was trained on a narrow population.” The advanced skill is not formal phrase density. It is knowing which logical relationship the phrase expresses.

110. “With the exception of…” protects a generalisation from one case | with the exception of

“With the exception of the final trial, all runs remained within tolerance.” This is stronger than “almost all” when the exact exception is known and relevant. The expression gives the reader both the general pattern and the excluded case. It is excellent for technical reporting because it prevents a single exception from being hidden inside a vague quantifier.

111. “Except where…” writes rule boundaries explicitly | except where

Policy and procedural writing often uses “except where X” to define the edge of a rule: “The data must remain confidential except where disclosure is legally required.” This is different from a caveat. It modifies the rule itself by defining a case in which the rule does not apply. In regulations, procedures and instructions, explicit exception clauses are often safer than relying on readers to infer the boundary.

112. Contract language distinguishes condition, warranty and representation | high-stakes domain warning

In legal contexts, everyday words such as condition, representation, warranty, waiver may have specialised technical meanings with legal consequences. This lesson teaches general advanced English, not legal doctrine. When the stakes are legal, use authoritative legal definitions for the jurisdiction and do not rely on ordinary dictionary meaning alone. The broader lesson is transferable: specialised domains can narrow familiar words into technical categories.

113. Policy writing separates eligibility, entitlement and discretion | 资格、权利与裁量不同

Meeting eligibility conditions may make someone eligible to apply, but not necessarily entitled to receive the benefit. If a decision-maker retains discretion, satisfying requirements may still not guarantee approval. This is a prime example of why conditional vocabulary matters beyond language exams. “Eligible”, “entitled”, “qualified”, “approved” and “guaranteed” encode different points in a decision process. Conflating them can mislead the reader about rights and certainty.

114. Specifications separate required, optional and preferred features | must / should / may architecture

Technical and procurement documents often distinguish mandatory requirement, optional feature, preferred characteristic, minimum specification, recommended configuration. These categories should not be rewritten for variety. If “must” becomes “should”, obligation weakens. If “preferred” becomes “required”, a preference becomes a gate. In high-stakes documents, lexical consistency matters more than synonym diversity.

115. Must, should and may are modal boundary words | modal vocabulary controls obligation

Must generally marks strong obligation or necessity. Should often marks recommendation, expectation or weaker obligation. May can mark permission or possibility. These are grammar words, but their lexical force is central to conditions and requirements. A policy that says “users should encrypt files” is not equivalent to one that says “users must encrypt files.” When rewriting, preserve the modal force.

116. “Required” and “recommended” must remain distinct | 规定与建议不能互换

Mandarin learners sometimes translate both into broad “需要/建议” without tracking force. Build explicit pairs: required / mandatory / compulsory versus recommended / advisable / preferred / encouraged. Do not choose a stronger word merely because it sounds official. The choice changes whether non-compliance is permitted.

117. Advisable means sensible, not compulsory | advisable = 建议性的

“It is advisable to back up the file” recommends a prudent action. It does not say backup is formally required. “It is necessary to back up the file” says the action is needed for the relevant purpose. “It is mandatory to back up the file” says a rule requires it. These distinctions are ideal for advanced professional English because all three can translate loosely into Chinese advice/necessity language.

118. Preferred is a ranking, not a requirement | preferred = 优先选择

A “preferred qualification” is desirable but not necessarily required. A “preferred supplier” may be the default choice without being the only permitted supplier. When reviewing job advertisements, specifications or policies, pay attention to this hierarchy: essential/required versus desirable/preferred. It determines whether the item is a gate or an advantage.

119. Optional is not irrelevant | optional = 非强制但可能有价值

Calling something optional only tells you it is not required. An optional module may still be highly beneficial. This matters because learners sometimes read “optional” as “unimportant”. Requirement status and value are separate dimensions. A vocabulary-learning activity can be optional but strategically useful.

120. Conditional permission differs from unrestricted permission | permission with conditions

“You may publish the chart” grants permission. “You may publish the chart provided that the source is cited” grants conditional permission. “You may publish the chart except in commercial materials” grants permission with an exception. “You may publish the chart subject to approval” delays final permission until another gate is passed. This four-way contrast is an excellent vocabulary drill because each sentence contains a different boundary architecture.

121. Scientific methods need explicit operating conditions | conditions of validity

A model or measurement can be valid only under certain assumptions and ranges. “The approximation is valid for small values of X.” “The model assumes independent observations.” “The sensor operates reliably between 0°C and 50°C.” These are not afterthoughts. They are part of the claim. Removing the operating condition creates a stronger statement than the evidence or mathematics supports.

122. Assumption and condition are related but different | assumption ≠ condition

An assumption is a proposition accepted for the purpose of reasoning, modelling or analysis. A condition is a circumstance or requirement under which a result, rule or process holds. A model may assume constant variance; the model’s validity may depend on that condition being approximately satisfied. If an assumption is violated, the consequences depend on the model. Do not simply call every assumption a “requirement”.

123. Assumption violation has a technical flavour | violation = condition not met

In statistical and methodological writing, learners may read phrases such as assumption violation, violation of independence, violation of normality assumptions. The word violation does not imply moral wrongdoing here; it means a condition required by a method is not satisfied. This is another example of domain-specific prosody and polysemy.

124. Robustness asks whether conclusions survive changed conditions | robustness

A robust finding or method remains stable under reasonable changes in assumptions, samples, specifications or noise. This directly connects conditions to evidence quality. If it persists across several plausible specifications, confidence can increase. “Robust” should not be used merely as a synonym for strong.

Invariant is a technical word in mathematics, physics, statistics and other fields. It says a property remains unchanged under a specified transformation or condition. Because it is highly domain-specific, it should not replace ordinary stable/unchanged for style. But it illustrates the deepest principle of this lesson: every statement about stability should imply “stable with respect to what change?”

127. Exceptions test whether a rule is descriptive or absolute | exception as diagnostic

If one genuine exception destroys your sentence, the original sentence may have been too absolute. “All advanced learners prefer explicit feedback” collapses if one learner does not. “Most learners in this sample preferred explicit feedback” survives the exception. Exceptions therefore help edit generalisations. They reveal whether the quantifier, population label and condition are correctly chosen.

128. One exception does not always destroy a tendency | tendency language

A tendency is compatible with exceptions. “Older learners tended to respond faster” can remain true even if a few younger learners were faster. The key is that tend to describes a distributional pattern, not a universal rule. 129. “Generally” opens room for exceptions | generally

“The method generally performs well under moderate load” says the pattern holds in most/relevant cases but not necessarily all. However, do not use generally as a vague escape hatch when you actually know the exact conditions. If the exception is systematic—say performance fails above 80% load—state the threshold rather than hiding it behind generally.

130. “Typically” describes a normal pattern, not obligation | typically ≠ required

“Students typically complete the task in 20 minutes” is descriptive. It does not mean they must complete it in 20 minutes. “Students are required to complete the task within 20 minutes” is normative. This distinction matters in manuals, research and exam guidance. Descriptive regularity should not become an instruction accidentally.

131. “Normally” can be descriptive or procedural default | normally has two common jobs

“The system normally responds within one second” describes usual behaviour. “Applications are normally processed within five days” may describe procedure or service expectation. In policies, normally often leaves room for exceptions; it is weaker than a guaranteed service level. When consequences matter, specify whether “normally” is descriptive expectation, target or requirement.

132. “By default” is rule architecture, not frequency | by default

“By default, the system stores files locally” says what happens in the absence of another choice. It does not say local storage happens most frequently in observed behaviour, though it may. Distinguishing default rules from typical behaviour prevents confusion between configuration and empirical frequency.

133. “All else being equal” is an explicit analytical condition | ceteris paribus style

“All else being equal, higher prices reduce demand” holds other relevant factors constant for analytical purposes. This phrase is useful because real systems rarely change one variable at a time. It tells the reader that the relation is conditional on a simplifying assumption. Do not use it when other variables are known to change systematically with the one being discussed.

134. “Other things being equal” is a plainer equivalent | plain-English analytical condition

Use the version that fits audience and register. The learning target is the reasoning relation, not the Latin prestige of ceteris paribus. Advanced language means making hidden conditions explicit, not displaying rare terminology.

“Holding age constant, experience was associated with performance.” This statistical/analytical phrase tells the reader that one variable is controlled in the comparison or model. 138. Initial conditions define a system’s starting state | initial conditions

In dynamical systems and modelling, initial conditions specify the starting state from which a process evolves. They differ from boundary conditions and operating constraints. This distinction is useful because the general word condition becomes highly specific in technical compounds. Always learn the compound’s domain meaning, not merely the headword.

139. Entry conditions, exit conditions and stopping criteria | process-control vocabulary

Procedures and algorithms often define what must be true before entry, what ends a process and what counts as completion. Entry condition, exit condition, termination condition, stopping criterion, completion criterion each locate a rule within a process. A success criterion says how you will recognise that the goal has been achieved. Nobody did; the resource is finite. “The $10,000 budget is a major constraint” is clearer. If company policy prohibited spending above $10,000 even when more money existed, “spending restriction” or “spending cap” would fit better. The facts may look similar, but the institutional relation changes the noun.

Part V — Mandarin-to-English boundary control | 第五部分:中文母语学习者的条件与边界词汇转换

For Mandarin-speaking learners, many errors in this field begin before English grammar. One Chinese word can cover several English reasoning jobs, so a direct translation feels plausible even when the relationship is wrong. The repair is to translate the relationship first. Ask whether the Chinese expression means a requirement, a prerequisite, a practical constraint, an imposed restriction, a qualification to a claim, an exception, a formal exemption, a threshold, a range, a contingency or merely a general circumstance. Then choose the English construction.

181. 条件 can become condition, requirement, term or circumstance | 条件不是固定等于 condition

“满足条件” may mean meet the requirements, satisfy the conditions or meet the criteria, depending on the system. “生活条件” means living conditions. “合同条件” may be contract terms/conditions. “申请条件” may be eligibility requirements. “实验条件” is experimental conditions. If learners memorise 条件 = condition, the English may remain understandable but fail to identify the institutional or logical job. Build multiple English routes around the Chinese node rather than one translation pair.

182. 前提 can become premise, prerequisite or precondition | 前提要先分推理与流程

“在这个前提下” can be on that assumption / given that premise when the idea is accepted for reasoning. “入门前提” may be prerequisite knowledge. “谈判前提” may be precondition for negotiations. A premise belongs to reasoning: a proposition from which an argument proceeds. A prerequisite/precondition belongs to sequencing or enabling conditions. This is a critical distinction because translating both as “premise” or both as “prerequisite” changes the architecture.

183. 要求 can become requirement, request, demand or expectation | 要求有义务强度

“课程要求” is often course requirements. “我要求他离开” may be I demanded/required that he leave, depending on authority and force. “客户要求” may be a customer requirement when specifying a product, but a customer request when asking for a change. “老师对学生的要求” can be expectations when referring to standards rather than formal rules. The English choice tells the reader whether the source is institutional, interpersonal or evaluative.

184. 必要 can become necessary, essential or required | 必要与强制要分开

Necessary expresses need for an outcome or purpose. Required often foregrounds a rule or specification. Essential can mean absolutely necessary or centrally important. “这是必要的” does not automatically become “This is mandatory.” If the need comes from practical logic, use necessary. If policy imposes it, required/mandatory may be better. If you mean the factor is central but are not making a formal obligation claim, essential may fit.

185. 充分 can become sufficient, adequate or enough | 充分不是 always sufficient

“充分证据” may be sufficient evidence when the point is that there is enough evidence to justify a decision, but strong/ample evidence when the point is quantity or persuasive force. “准备充分” is well prepared, not normally “sufficiently prepared” unless a threshold is explicit. “充分利用” is make full use of. The Chinese adjective often changes English category entirely. Learn the function rather than the word form.

186. 限制 is a high-risk translation node | restriction, constraint, limitation, limit

Ask four questions. Is somebody or a rule preventing an action? → restriction. Is a resource or reality narrowing choices? → constraint. Is the method or claim unable to extend beyond something? → limitation. Do you simply need the broad boundary word? → limit. “预算限制” is often budget constraint; “旅行限制” is travel restriction; “研究限制” is study limitation; “时间限制” can be time limit or time constraint depending whether it is a fixed deadline or general pressure.

187. 局限 usually points to limitation, not restriction | 局限强调能力/适用范围

“这个模型有局限” → The model has limitations. “这种方法的局限在于…” → A limitation of the method is… This generally does not imply that an authority imposed a restriction. It says the model, evidence or method cannot do everything. Using restriction here can make the limitation sound like an external rule rather than an intrinsic or design boundary.

188. 约束 often maps well to constraint, but domain matters | 约束 = constraint often, not always

“资源约束” → resource constraints. “时间约束” → time constraints. In mathematics or optimisation, “约束条件” may be constraints with precise formal definitions. A case that falls outside a general rule is an exception. Formal permission not to meet an obligation is an exemption. A situation handled differently for practical reasons may be a special case. “医疗豁免” is usually medical exemption, not “medical exception”. “这是一个例外” can be This is an exception. “这个个案需要单独处理” may be This is a special case that requires separate treatment.

190. 豁免 maps to exemption or waiver depending mechanism | 豁免不是 ordinary exception

An exemption means the rule does not apply to a person/case. A waiver often involves an authority formally waiving a fee, requirement, right or condition, or a person waiving a right. “学费豁免” may be fee waiver; “税务豁免” is often tax exemption. The institutional mechanism chooses the word. This is why domain verification matters even after the conceptual category is correct.

“报警阈值” → alert threshold. “检测阈值” → detection threshold. “分类阈值” → classification threshold. The advanced task is not merely translating 阈值; it is naming what crosses the threshold and what changes afterward. A complete explanation says: “When the risk score exceeds the threshold of 80, the case is routed to manual review.”

195. 范围 can be range, scope, extent or coverage | 范围要问“数值、主题还是覆盖面?”

Range often describes values or variety: temperature range, price range. Scope describes what a project, study or discussion covers. Extent describes how far something reaches or the degree to which it is true. Coverage describes what areas/items are included. “研究范围” is usually scope of the study, while “正常范围” is normal range. One Chinese word maps to different English dimensions.

196. 容差 is tolerance in technical measurement | 容差 = tolerance, not general tolerance of people

“±0.2 mm 容差” → a tolerance of ±0.2 mm. “风险容忍度” is often risk tolerance. “容错率” may be fault tolerance or an acceptable error rate depending on the system. Do not transfer one technical compound to another without checking. The headword tolerance has social, medical, engineering and finance senses.

Meet the requirements is extremely common. Satisfy the requirements/conditions is also natural and often formal. Fulfil the requirements is possible in many contexts, especially obligations, but distribution varies. Avoid direct constructions such as “reach the requirement” unless the requirement is a numerical target and the phrase is conventional in that context. Learn the noun’s verb network.

Fit the conditions may be grammatical in a different sense but is usually not the institutional phrase learners need. Unsafe: “The method is reliable.” Stronger: “Among advanced learners, the method remained reliable under timed laboratory conditions except at the highest load.” The words may change; population, condition and exception must survive. This is the test that separates vocabulary range from meaning control.

Take a 300-word result containing three conditions and two caveats. Reduce it to 60 words. Then compare the logical map before and after. If a condition that changes truth disappears, the summary is too compressed. If all boundaries survive but unnecessary detail is gone, the learner has achieved a sophisticated form of lexical compression.

Explain a policy or study in 90 seconds without notes. A listener should be able to answer: What is required? What is optional? What is the main constraint? Who is exempt? What is the threshold? What caveat limits the conclusion? What happens if the condition fails? If the listener cannot recover these answers, the vocabulary may be known but the architecture is not yet communicated.

Rewrite “Eligibility is contingent upon satisfaction of all prerequisite conditions, subject to the exceptions enumerated below” for a general reader: “You can apply only after meeting all the required conditions, except in the cases listed below.” Then reverse the task for a formal policy context. The learner should be able to change register while keeping the logical structure identical.

Choose an unfamiliar boundary word such as proviso, waiver, stipulation or headroom. Without relying on translation alone, use a learner dictionary and corpus examples to identify sense, grammar frame, register, typical nouns/verbs and one contrast word. Then decide whether it belongs in recognition vocabulary or active vocabulary for your needs. Independent verification is the final route out of word-list dependence.

The reader job here is not to memorise ten definitions. It is to build a transferable system for handling rule boundaries across learning, research, work and real decisions. A short glossary could tell you that constraint means a limit and exception means something outside a rule. It could not teach you when a budget is a constraint rather than a restriction, when an exemption differs from an exception, why a caveat limits interpretation rather than membership, how a threshold differs from a range, or how Mandarin translation can collapse these distinctions. Depth is justified when it builds a reusable model rather than repeating the same idea.

268. Final rule, restored at the true end | 最终规则

Do not ask only whether a statement is true. Ask under what conditions it is true, what limits it, who falls outside it, and where it stops being true.

That is why this vocabulary belongs in advanced English. Conditions, constraints, exceptions and thresholds are not peripheral words. They are the vocabulary of intellectual boundaries. They keep a local observation from becoming a universal rule, a recommendation from becoming a requirement, a practical constraint from becoming a legal restriction, and one exceptional case from destroying a useful tendency.

When you can name the boundary precisely, you can reason more precisely.
