Advanced reasoning fails when language makes an interpretation look like a finding, a possibility look like a conclusion, or a claim look like evidence.
高级推理最危险的错误之一,就是语言把“解释”写成“发现”,把“可能性”写成“结论”,把“主张”写成“证据”。

Imagine a study records that students answered more questions correctly after a new teaching method. The raw records are data. The measured increase is a result. The research team may identify a recurring pattern and call it a finding. They may then offer an interpretation: perhaps the method improved retrieval. From the evidence they may make an inference. They may formulate a claim. At the end of the argument they may reach a conclusion. Finally, they may discuss an implication for teaching.

Those words are not interchangeable.

Cambridge defines evidence as facts or information that give reason to believe something is true; finding as information discovered through examination or study; inference as an opinion or belief formed from available information; and conclusion as a judgment reached after considering the information. Manchester Academic Phrasebank makes a similar practical distinction by separating reporting results, discussing findings, suggesting implications and writing conclusions. That separation is a useful vocabulary architecture for C1–C2 learners.

Name the stage of reasoning before choosing the noun.

Its narrow job is: what kind of intellectual object is this sentence naming?


1. Build a reasoning-stage map | 先建立推理阶段地图

Data → Observation → Result → Finding → Interpretation → Inference → Claim → Conclusion → Implication

数据 → 观察 → 结果 → 发现 → 解释 → 推断 → 主张 → 结论 → 含义/启示

This sequence is a learning model, not a rigid research-method rule. Real research processes loop backward and forward. The value of the map is lexical discipline: each noun carries a different reasoning job.

2. Data are collected information | data = 被收集、记录、存储以供分析的信息

Cambridge defines data as information—especially facts or numbers—collected for examination and decision-making, or electronic information stored for use.

  • raw data;
  • survey data;
  • experimental data;
  • longitudinal data;
  • qualitative data;
  • quantitative data.

3. Data are not automatically evidence | data ≠ 自动成为 evidence

A dataset becomes evidence in relation to a question or claim. The same data may be relevant to one claim and irrelevant to another.

4. Evidence is relational | evidence 总是“支持什么”的证据

Cambridge defines evidence as facts or information that give reason to believe something is true.

  • evidence for X;
  • evidence against X;
  • evidence of X;
  • evidence that X;
  • evidence to support X;
  • evidence consistent with X.

5. Evidence is usually uncountable | evidence 通常不可数

Standard learner English normally uses:

  • some evidence;
  • a piece of evidence;
  • a body of evidence;
  • strong evidence;
  • limited evidence.

Not normally an evidence when you mean a piece of supporting information.

6. Evidence has strength vocabulary | evidence 可以弱、强、混合、间接

  • limited evidence;
  • preliminary evidence;
  • tentative evidence;
  • supporting evidence;
  • strong evidence;
  • compelling evidence;
  • converging evidence;
  • contradictory evidence;

Strong evidence may justify a strong claim. Weak evidence does not become strong because the writer chooses clearly demonstrates.

Cambridge gives a scientific sense of observation as recorded information resulting from studying an event, and a broader sense involving noticing or remarking on something observed.

  • direct observation;
  • systematic observation;

9. Observation should stay close to what is seen | observation 不应该偷偷加入太多解释

Observed:

Students paused longer before the target words.

Interpretation:

The pauses may indicate slower lexical retrieval.

Those are different reasoning stages.

10. Result names an outcome of a procedure, test or process | result = 结果

Cambridge gives result a broad effect/outcome sense. In research writing, results often refers to the measured outcomes produced by analysis or experiment.

  • the result of the test;
  • the results showed…;
  • preliminary results;
  • mixed results;
  • negative results;
  • statistical results.

11. Reporting results should stay descriptive before becoming interpretive | results section 先报告,再讨论

Manchester Academic Phrasebank separates result reporting from discussion because describing what the analysis produced is not the same as explaining what it means.

12. Finding is an interpreted discovery from study | finding = 调研/分析后发现的信息

Cambridge defines finding as information discovered during an examination, inquiry or study.

  • key finding;
  • main finding;
  • major finding;
  • unexpected finding;
  • preliminary finding;
  • the finding that X.

13. Finding is not simply a synonym for result | finding ≠ result 的装饰性替换

A result may be a numerical or analytical output. A finding usually presents information that the investigator identifies as meaningful or noteworthy within the study.

14. One result can support several findings | result 与 finding 的粒度不同

A table may contain many numerical results. A paper may summarise those into one higher-level finding.

15. Pattern names repeated structure | pattern = 规律/模式

  • a recurring pattern;
  • a consistent pattern;
  • a clear pattern;

  • a pattern of errors.

16. Pattern does not automatically explain itself | 看见模式 ≠ 知道原因

“Errors increased under time pressure” is a pattern. “Working-memory overload caused the increase” is an explanation/causal claim requiring additional evidence.

17. Trend is directional change over time or sequence | trend = 趋势

  • upward trend;
  • downward trend;
  • long-term trend;
  • emerging trend;
  • trend over time.

18. Trend is not any repeated pattern | pattern 比 trend 更广

A checkerboard is a pattern but not a trend. A steady rise over five years is both patterned and trending.

19. Outcome names what happened, often without implying interpretation | outcome = 结果/结局

  • learning outcome;
  • clinical outcome;
  • policy outcome;
  • desired outcome;
  • measured outcome.

In many fields, outcome is a defined measurement category rather than a loose synonym for result.

20. Interpretation moves from what happened to what it means | interpretation = 对结果意义的解释

Cambridge defines interpretation as an explanation or opinion of what something means.

  • an interpretation of the result;
  • one possible interpretation;
  • a cautious interpretation;
  • an alternative interpretation;
  • the most plausible interpretation, if justified.

21. Interpretation is not the data | 解释不是数据本身

When a learner writes “the data show motivation increased”, check whether motivation was measured directly or inferred from behaviour.

22. Alternative interpretations are a sign of strong reasoning | 多个解释可以同时竞争

If several explanations fit the same result, do not present one as the finding itself.

23. Inference is a reasoning step from information to a belief/judgment | inference = 根据已有信息推断

Claim: The method improves long-term retention.

The strength lies in the relationship between claim and evidence.

28. Assertion is related but often stronger in tone | assertion = 断言

Assertion often foregrounds that something is being stated firmly. In analytical prose, it can sound more forceful or less evidence-neutral than claim.

Useful in logic, linguistics and analytical writing. It is not normally a stylistic replacement for every claim.

30. Hypothesis is a testable/explanatory proposal | hypothesis = 假设

A hypothesis is not a finding. A finding may support, challenge or fail to support a hypothesis.

31. Explanation is not evidence | explanation = 解释

A plausible explanation can fit the evidence while remaining unproven.

32. Conclusion is a judgment reached after considering information | conclusion = 结论

Cambridge defines conclusion as the opinion or judgment reached after considering information.

  • reach a conclusion;
  • draw a conclusion;
  • come to a conclusion;
  • support a conclusion;
  • justify a conclusion;
  • a premature conclusion;
  • a tentative conclusion.

33. Conclusion is not simply the last sentence | conclusion 有结构意义,也有推理意义

Cambridge uses conclusion both for the final part of a text and for a judgment. Advanced learners should distinguish the section from the reasoning product.

34. Manchester conclusions combine summary and judgment | conclusion section 通常回顾+最终评论

Academic Phrasebank describes conclusions as typically summarising what has been covered and giving a final comment or judgment, with research conclusions often discussing significance and future directions.

35. Implication asks “What follows from this?” | implication = 这意味着什么?

  • theoretical implication;

  • policy implication;
  • educational implication;
  • implications for future research.

Evidence → finding → interpretation → conclusion may support an implication. A recommendation adds an action proposal and should be justified separately.

Manchester Phrasebank notes that discussion sections commonly cycle through results/findings, comparisons with previous work, explanations, cautions, implications and hypotheses.

“The data show that motivation caused improvement” may collapse measurement, interpretation and causation. Ask what exactly was measured.

41. “Indicate” can be safer for evidential movement | indicate = 表明/提示

It often marks that evidence points toward a conclusion without necessarily proving it.

42. “Suggest” often marks interpretive caution | suggest = 提示/表明

Manchester Phrasebank repeatedly uses findings suggest and evidence suggests when moving from observed material toward interpretation or implication.

43. “Demonstrate” is stronger | demonstrate = 证明显著关系/明确展示

Use only when evidence warrants stronger evidential force. Lesson No.020’s stance ladder applies.

44. “Reveal” can sound discovery-oriented | reveal = 揭示

It often foregrounds information becoming visible through analysis. Do not use it to smuggle in an unsupported interpretation.

45. “Confirm” has high evidential commitment | confirm = 证实/确认

Manchester uses confirm in contexts where a study substantiates an expected relationship or prior proposition. Avoid using it when the evidence merely aligns with a possibility.

46. “Support” does not always mean “prove” | support = 支持

  • support a claim;
  • support a conclusion;
  • support a hypothesis;
  • provide support for;
  • strongly support, when warranted.

47. “Consistent with” is compatibility language | consistent with = 相容

As Lesson No.031 established, evidence can be consistent with a hypothesis without uniquely establishing it.

48. “Corroborate” means provide supporting confirmation | corroborate = 佐证

Useful when independent evidence supports an existing account or finding. It is not a decorative synonym for agree.

49. “Substantiate” means support with evidence | substantiate = 用证据支持/证实

Common with claim, allegation, argument. Check whether the evidence truly strengthens the proposition.

50. “Refute” is stronger than “challenge” | refute = 驳倒;challenge = 质疑

If evidence merely creates doubt, use challenge, cast doubt on, question. Use refute only when the proposition is shown to be wrong.

51. “Fail to support” is not the same as “disprove” | 没有支持 ≠ 证明错误

A study may fail to support a hypothesis because evidence is weak, noisy or insufficient. That does not automatically refute the hypothesis.

52. Negative result vocabulary needs precision | negative result 不等于“没有任何东西”

  • no significant difference was detected;
  • no evidence was found for X;
  • the analysis did not identify X;
  • the result was inconclusive;
  • the evidence was insufficient to determine X.

53. “No evidence of X” is not always “evidence of no X” | 极重要逻辑边界

Absence of evidence may reflect insufficient power, poor measurement or genuinely no effect. Do not collapse these possibilities.

54. Inconclusive means evidence does not settle the question | inconclusive = 不能得出明确结论

This is a result-status word, not a synonym for “bad study”.

55. Ambiguous means more than one interpretation remains | ambiguous = 含义/解释不唯一

56. Mixed findings means different indicators point differently | mixed findings ≠ confused writing

Some outcomes may improve while others do not. Name the dimensions rather than forcing one global conclusion.

57. Preliminary findings carry a time/status label | preliminary = 初步,尚未最终确定

Preliminary does not mean unimportant. It means the analytical process or evidence base is not final.

58. Robust findings imply stability under checks | robust = 在合理变化/检验下仍稳定

Do not use robust merely as “strong”. In technical contexts, robustness often refers to stability under alternative specifications, samples or assumptions.

59. Replicated finding has a specific research meaning | replicated = 重复研究得到相似结果

One repeated observation inside the same dataset is not necessarily replication.

60. Generalisable conclusion moves beyond the sample | generalisable = 可推广

Lesson No.028’s scope control applies. A conclusion about six learners should not become a claim about all learners without justification.

61. Extrapolation is a further reasoning move | extrapolate = 从已知范围推到更远范围

Extrapolation may be legitimate, but it should be named as a move beyond directly observed data.

62. Implication can be practical, theoretical or methodological | implication 要分类型

  • theoretical implication — what a model may need to explain;

  • policy implication — what policy makers may consider.

63. “Implication” is not “recommendation” | implication ≠ recommendation

Use the table as a functional map, not a rigid grammar law. Always inspect what object the verb takes and what evidential commitment it creates.

68. “Find that” can report a study outcome | find that X

It does not necessarily mean the proposition was previously unknown to science; it means the study identified the result/finding.

69. “Observe that” stays closer to measurement | observe that X

Useful when you want to emphasise what was directly recorded rather than why it happened.

70. “Infer that” explicitly marks a reasoning move | infer that X

This is valuable because it tells the reader the proposition was derived rather than directly measured.

71. “Conclude that” belongs near the end of the evidential chain | conclude that X

Do not use it after one weak observation unless the conclusion is appropriately narrow.

72. “Argue that” foregrounds reasoning rather than measurement | argue that X

An argument can integrate evidence, assumptions and reasoning. It is not a synonym for the data show.

73. “Claim that” can sound more detached or contested | claim that X

Cambridge’s general definition notes that a claim states something as true even though it may not be proven or accepted. In academic writing, claim can neutrally refer to a proposition, but context may make it sound sceptical. Check tone.

74. Claim, argument and hypothesis are different objects | 三者不能互换

Repair:

The main finding was that response times decreased after repeated retrieval. One possible interpretation is that lexical access became more efficient.

88. Worked case: Iona treats a claim as evidence | 案例二

Iona writes:

Experts claim the method is effective, which is evidence that it works.

A claim by experts may be relevant testimony or a source position, but the claim itself is not automatically empirical evidence.

Repair:

Several experts argue that the method is effective. The empirical evidence for that claim should be evaluated separately.

89. Worked case: Leonie jumps from result to recommendation | 案例三

One small study finds a short-term gain. Leonie writes:

Schools should adopt the method immediately.

The recommendation outruns the finding, interpretation, replication and scope evidence.

Safer:

The preliminary finding supports further testing of the method before wider adoption is considered.

A study does not detect a significant difference. The writer says:

The hypothesis was disproved.

Without sufficient evidence, that conclusion may be too strong.

Better:

The study did not find evidence supporting the predicted difference under these conditions.

Choose one research article, report, policy analysis or evidence-based essay of 800–1500 words.

  1. Highlight every sentence that reports data or direct observation.
  2. Underline every result/finding sentence.
  3. Circle every interpretation or inference.
  4. Box every claim.
  5. Mark the conclusion.
  6. Mark each implication or recommendation separately.
  7. Find one sentence where the reasoning stage is ambiguous.
  8. Rewrite it with an explicit stage label.
  9. Find one claim and identify the evidence supporting it.
  10. Find one finding and write two competing interpretations.
  11. Write your own 200-word summary preserving all reasoning stages.
  12. Two days later, reconstruct the argument from a Data→Finding→Interpretation→Claim→Conclusion map rather than copying the source.

Do not score yourself by the number of academic nouns used. Score whether every noun accurately identifies the reasoning stage.

Report what you observed. Label what you inferred. Support what you claim. Limit what you conclude.

观察到什么,就报告什么;推断了什么,就标明推断;主张什么,就给证据;结论到哪里,就停在哪里。

Do not call an explanation a finding. Do not call a claim evidence. Do not call a null result a refutation. Do not turn one interpretation into the only possible conclusion. Do not turn an implication into an immediate universal recommendation.

At C1–C2, reasoning vocabulary is not decoration.

It tells the reader how far the sentence has travelled from what was directly observed.

真正高级的学术词汇,不是让每句话听起来“像论文”。而是让读者一眼看得出:哪些是数据、哪些是结果、哪些是发现、哪些是解释、哪些是推断、哪些只是主张,以及你的结论到底走了多远。
