How to Learn Advanced English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.003 | Break the One-to-One Translation Habit | 第003课:打破“一词一译”的习惯

Translation is a bridge. It becomes a trap when you mistake the bridge for the map.
翻译是一座桥。把桥误当成地图,就会变成陷阱。

You know the Chinese idea. You know several English words. Yet the sentence still feels wrong. This is one of the most frustrating stages of advanced English learning because the problem is no longer “I do not know enough vocabulary.” The problem is often: I am choosing English through a Chinese lexical boundary that English does not share.

你知道中文意思,也认识不少英文词,可句子还是不自然。到了高级阶段,问题经常已经不是“词不够”,而是:你仍然用中文的词义边界来决定英文词应该怎么选。

This lesson is deliberately vocabulary-specific. It does not duplicate the separate Advanced English lesson on grammar transfer between Mandarin and English. Here we stay inside the lexicon: meanings, senses, collocations, phrase patterns, connotations, register and contextual choice.

本课只处理词汇层面的迁移:一个中文词为什么会对应多个英文词;一个英文词为什么会跨越多个中文意思;为什么字典里的“同义词”不能随便替换;为什么搭配和语域会决定最终选择。

1. The first mistake: believing every word has one partner | 第一个错误:以为每个词都有固定伴侣

Beginner dictionaries often encourage a useful simplification:

ChineseEnglish
问题problem
提高improve
影响influence
look
open

At the earliest stage, this works. It gives the learner a fast entry point.

但是到了高级阶段,这张表会开始制造错误。因为“问题”不永远是 problem,“提高”不永远是 improve,“影响”不永远是 influence,“看”也绝不永远是 look。

Languages do not place identical fences around reality. They divide experience differently, create different conventional phrases and attach different grammatical patterns to those phrases.

词与词之间通常不是一条直线,而是一张重叠但不完全重合的地图。

2. Chinese “问题” is not one English word | “问题”不是一个英文词

“问题” may become:

English choiceTypical useExample
problemsomething wrong or difficult that needs solvingWe have a technical problem.
issuea matter for discussion, concern or attention; sometimes a problemThe report raises an important issue.
questionsomething to ask, investigate or decideThe central question is whether the policy works.
mattera subject or situation under considerationThis is a matter for the board.
concerna matter causing worry or requiring attentionSafety remains a major concern.
challengea difficult task or obstacle, often framed constructivelyScaling the system is a significant challenge.
difficultya problem in doing or understanding somethingStudents may experience difficulty with inference.
faulta defect or responsibility for something wrongThe fault lies in the wiring.
defecta flaw in a product, system or materialThe inspection found a manufacturing defect.
complicationa factor that makes a situation more difficultA further complication is the lack of data.

The question is not “Which is the advanced synonym for problem?” The question is “What kind of problem is this?”

高级词汇选择的第一步经常不是找“更难的词”,而是重新分类现实。

3. Chinese “提高” is a family of English actions | “提高”在英语里是一组不同动作

Consider “提高”.

  • improve performance — make performance better
  • increase output — make quantity larger
  • raise standards — move a standard to a higher level
  • enhance clarity — improve a quality, often formal
  • boost confidence — increase noticeably, often less formal
  • strengthen an argument — make it more robust or convincing
  • develop a skill — build capability over time
  • upgrade a system — move to a better version or level of capability
  • elevate the discussion — raise its quality or level, often figurative

If you automatically translate every “提高” as improve, your English may remain understandable but lose resolution.

学习这些词时,不要做“improve 的高级同义词表”。要做“不同种类的提高”分类表。

4. Chinese “看” reveals why context comes first | “看”最能说明为什么必须先看语境

  • 看书 → read a book
  • 看电视 → watch television
  • 看一眼 → look at something
  • 看见 → see
  • 看医生 → see a doctor
  • 看朋友 → visit a friend / see a friend
  • 看情况 → see how things go / depending on the situation
  • 怎么看这个问题? → How do you view this issue? / What do you think about it?
  • 我看不懂 → I do not understand it / I cannot make sense of it.

There is no single English word hiding behind 看. The Chinese item covers a conceptual territory that English divides across visual attention, perception, reading, visiting, consulting, interpretation and opinion.

所以高级学习者在翻译前要先问:“这里的动作到底是什么?”

5. Chinese “开” can become an entire vocabulary lesson | 一个“开”,就可以上一整课

  • 开门 → open the door
  • 开灯 → turn on the light
  • 开车 → drive
  • 开会 → hold / have a meeting
  • 开店 → open / run a shop depending on meaning
  • 开公司 → start / set up a company
  • 开药 → prescribe medicine
  • 开玩笑 → joke / make a joke
  • 开机 → turn on / start up a device
  • 开花 → bloom / flower

A one-to-one learner asks, “What does 开 mean in English?” An advanced learner asks, “What event is happening here, and what is the conventional English way to name it?”

不要翻“字”。先识别“事件”。

6. Chinese “打” shows why collocation can beat dictionary meaning | “打”说明为什么搭配比单词翻译更重要

  • 打电话 → make a call / call somebody
  • 打球 → play a ball sport
  • 打字 → type
  • 打扫 → clean
  • 打车 → take / get a taxi
  • 打包 → pack / pack up depending on context
  • 打折 → discount / be on sale
  • 打招呼 → greet / say hello to
  • 打断 → interrupt
  • 打败 → defeat / beat

The lesson is not to memorise ten translations of 打. The lesson is to stop expecting a single English lexical equivalent.

真正要学的是每一个完整搭配或事件表达

7. The reverse problem: one English word, many Chinese routes | 反过来也一样:一个英文词可以对应很多中文

Take case.

  • a legal case → 案件
  • a medical case → 病例
  • in this case → 在这种情况下
  • make the case for something → 为某事提出论据
  • a business case → 商业论证 / 商业可行性理由
  • in case of fire → 如果发生火灾 / 遇到火灾时
  • a phone case → 手机壳
  • upper case → 大写

If you store one translation, the word appears chaotic later. If you store senses and patterns, it becomes organised.

高级词汇学习的单位应从“词 = 中文”升级到“词义 + 结构 + 场景”。

8. Polysemy is normal, not an exception | 多义不是例外,而是语言常态

High-frequency English words are often highly polysemous because they have developed many conventional uses.

  • account
  • address
  • approach
  • case
  • charge
  • conduct
  • issue
  • maintain
  • position
  • point
  • record
  • run
  • set
  • state
  • subject

A learner who knows only the first dictionary sense often feels unexpectedly weak in advanced reading because familiar words keep appearing in unfamiliar roles.

高级阅读最重要的习惯之一,就是开始标记熟词新义

9. Do not memorise ten unrelated translations—find the semantic core | 不要把多义词背成十个互不相关的中文

Take maintain.

  • maintain a machine → keep it in good working condition
  • maintain standards → keep them at a required level
  • maintain control → continue to have control
  • maintain contact → continue contact
  • maintain that something is true → continue to state or argue it

The senses differ, but a useful semantic thread remains: keeping a state, condition, relationship or position continuing.

如果只背“维持、保养、坚持认为”,看起来像三个完全不同的词。找到英语内部的核心关系,记忆会更稳定。

10. English definitions help you see English boundaries | 英文定义帮助你看见“英语自己的边界”

Chinese glosses are efficient but compressed. An English learner dictionary often gives the boundary more clearly.

Suppose you compare efficient and effective.

  • effective — produces the intended or desired result
  • efficient — produces results without wasting unnecessary time, energy or resources

Chinese translations may overlap around “有效率 / 有效”. The English definitions expose the difference in the decision you must make.

高级阶段建议顺序:英文定义 → 英文例句 → 中文确认 → 回到英文。

11. Build “translation fans”, not translation pairs | 建“翻译扇形图”,不要只建翻译对

Instead of writing:

影响 = influence

build a fan:

  • influence a decision
  • affect performance
  • have an impact on outcomes
  • shape public opinion
  • alter behaviour
  • change the result
  • determine the outcome
  • constrain what is possible

These verbs are not synonyms. The fan shows different mechanisms inside the broad Chinese concept “影响”.

每遇到一个高频中文概念,可以问:“英语把这个概念分成哪些常见动作?”

12. Build reverse fans for English words | 英文词也要做“反向扇形图”

English headword: engage.

  • engage the audience → 吸引 / 调动观众
  • engage in discussion → 参与讨论
  • engage with an idea → 认真处理 / 思考某个观点
  • engage a consultant → 聘请顾问
  • engage the enemy → 与敌方交战
  • gears engage → 齿轮啮合

The learner who expects one Chinese equivalent will keep feeling that English is arbitrary. The learner who builds sense clusters sees order.

13. Near-synonyms are not interchangeable | 近义词不是可互换零件

Consider words around “减少”:

WordTypical ideaNatural examples
reducemake amount/size/degree smallerreduce costs, reduce risk
decreasebecome or make numerically smallerprices decreased; decrease the dosage
declinebecome lower/weaker; often intransitive noun/verbsales declined; a decline in demand
lowermove to a lower levellower prices, lower the temperature
cutreduce, often direct and practicalcut costs, cut emissions
curbcontrol or limit something undesirablecurb inflation, curb excessive spending
mitigatemake harm/severity less seriousmitigate risk, mitigate the impact
alleviatemake suffering/problem less severealleviate pain, alleviate pressure

The Chinese bridge may be “减少/降低/缓解”. The English decision depends on what is changing and how.

高级词汇练习要训练选择条件,而不是训练“同义词数量”。

14. The thesaurus trap | 同义词词典陷阱

A thesaurus answers: “What words occupy nearby semantic territory?” It does not answer: “Which word belongs in my sentence?”

如果你写:

This is an important issue.

and replace important with momentous, paramount, consequential or material simply because they look “advanced”, you may damage the sentence.

同义词词典应该用来发现候选词,学习词典和真实语料才用来决定候选词是否适合

15. Collocation decides what sounds natural | 搭配会决定一句话“像不像英语”

Suppose two words have similar dictionary meanings. Their collocations may still differ.

  • strong evidence — natural
  • powerful evidence — possible in some contexts but less conventional
  • heavy rain — natural
  • strong rain — generally unnatural
  • make progress — natural
  • do progress — unnatural
  • reach a conclusion — natural
  • arrive a conclusion — wrong pattern; arrive at a conclusion is possible

The British Council’s advanced collocation guidance highlights accurate and appropriate lexical chunks as a key distinction at advanced levels. Oxford’s Phrase List likewise moves learners beyond individual words into collocations, phrasal verbs and common phrase patterns.

所以“中文意思对”只是第一关。第二关是:英语通常这样搭吗?

16. Grammar can distinguish near-synonyms | 语法结构也会区分近义词

Words close in meaning may select different structures.

  • prevent somebody from doing
  • stop somebody from doing
  • avoid doing
  • protect somebody from something
  • discourage somebody from doing

Chinese may compress these around “避免 / 阻止 / 防止”. English requires different lexical-grammar packages.

高级词汇学习必须把词 + 结构当作一个单位。

17. Register can make a correct translation wrong for the situation | 语域会让“翻译正确”变成“场景错误”

Chinese “开始” may map to start, begin, commence, initiate, kick off. These choices differ in register and collocation.

ChoiceRegister / useExample
startbroad neutralstart the meeting
beginneutral, sometimes slightly formalbegin the process
commenceformal/officialconstruction will commence in May
initiateformal; deliberately cause a process to begininitiate an investigation
kick offinformal to neutral depending on contextkick off the campaign

Using commence with friends does not make you C2. It may simply make you sound oddly formal.

高级不是更正式。高级是更合适。

18. Connotation can make a dictionary synonym socially wrong | 感情色彩会让“字典同义词”在人际意义上出错

  • confident ↔ arrogant
  • persistent ↔ stubborn
  • curious ↔ nosy
  • slim ↔ skinny
  • economical ↔ cheap
  • assertive ↔ aggressive

The factual territory overlaps, but the speaker’s evaluation changes.

中文翻译可能把两边都压缩成相似意思,但真实交流里,听者会感受到你的态度。

Use eduKateSengkang’s canonical mechanism page How Connotation Changes Meaning Beyond Dictionary Definitions for deeper work. This lesson applies that mechanism specifically to Mandarin-to-English lexical choice.

19. Countability is part of lexical translation | 可数与不可数也是词汇翻译的一部分

Chinese nouns do not mark countability in the same way English nouns do. A direct lexical translation can therefore create grammar errors.

  • information — usually uncountable
  • advice — usually uncountable
  • research — usually uncountable when referring generally to the activity/body of work
  • equipment — uncountable
  • furniture — uncountable
  • evidence — usually uncountable in general use

So “一个建议” does not automatically become “an advice”. English may require a piece of advice, a suggestion or simply advice, depending on the meaning.

高级词汇卡里应该记录countable / uncountable behaviour,而不是只记中文意思。

20. Chinese measure thinking may need English lexical restructuring | 中文量词思维有时需要英语重新分类

When English uses an uncountable noun, it often needs a lexical measure phrase.

  • a piece of advice
  • a piece of information
  • a piece of evidence
  • an item of equipment
  • a piece of furniture
  • a body of research
  • a strand of evidence

These are not mere grammar repairs. They are part of how English lexicalises quantity.

21. Category boundaries may differ across languages | 两种语言的“类别边界”不一定一样

Consider English borrow and lend. Chinese learners may conceptually organise both around 借, but English lexicalises direction.

  • I borrowed a book from her. → the book moved toward me temporarily.
  • She lent me a book. → the book moved away from her temporarily.

The same applies to bring and take, come and go, teach and learn. English choices often encode viewpoint or direction.

高级词汇不是只学“东西是什么”,还要学英语从哪个角度看这个事件。

22. Learn event frames | 学“事件框架”,不要只学词

A useful way to escape word-for-word translation is to describe the event before choosing vocabulary.

Chinese idea: “公司给他提高工资。”

Event frame: employer causes salary to become higher.

Natural English routes:

  • The company raised his salary.
  • He received a pay rise.
  • The company increased his salary by 10%.

Do not start with “提高 = improve”. Start with the event.

先说清楚发生了什么,再选择英文。

23. Learn noun–verb preference, not just meaning | 英语有自己的“名词—动词偏好”

Chinese and English may package the same idea using different preferred structures.

Instead of forcing a direct translation, notice conventional English choices:

  • 做决定 → make a decision
  • 取得进步 → make progress
  • 产生影响 → have an impact / affect
  • 提出问题 → raise a question / raise an issue / ask a question depending on meaning
  • 进行研究 → conduct research / carry out research
  • 承担责任 → take responsibility / assume responsibility

These combinations are lexical decisions. Memorising the individual words is not enough.

24. “Do” and “make” expose the limits of translation | do 和 make 最能暴露“一词一译”的局限

Chinese often uses 做 across many actions. English divides these among conventional verbs and collocations.

  • do homework
  • do research — common, though conduct/carry out research is more formal
  • make a decision
  • make progress
  • make a mistake
  • make an effort
  • take action
  • conduct an experiment
  • carry out an assessment
  • perform a task

There is no universal rule that lets you translate 做 once and reuse the same verb everywhere.

高级解决方案不是背“do/make 大规则”之后停止,而是把高频表达直接作为词块保存。

25. “Have” is often the hidden English solution | 很多中文动词,英语最后会用 have 结构

  • 有影响 → have an impact
  • 有经验 → have experience
  • 有机会 → have an opportunity / have a chance
  • 有困难 → have difficulty doing something
  • 有责任 → have responsibility for / be responsible for

But even here, direct mapping is unsafe: “有道理” is not usually “have reason” in the same way. It may be make sense, have a point or be reasonable.

所以每一个高频中文词都可能对应多个英文句型网络。

26. The context triangle | 用“语境三角形”选词

Before choosing an English word, check three things:

  1. Meaning: What exactly is happening?
  2. Situation: Who is speaking/writing to whom, and why?
  3. Pattern: What words and grammar usually surround this English choice?

Call this Meaning–Situation–Pattern.

例如你想表达“严重问题”。先别直接选 serious:

  • serious problem — broad and natural
  • pressing issue — urgent matter requiring attention
  • critical failure — severe technical failure / decisive breakdown
  • major concern — important source of worry
  • systemic problem — problem embedded in the wider system

Context determines the lexical model.

27. The four-question replacement for “What is this in English?” | 用四个问题替代“这个英文怎么说?”

  1. What do I actually mean?
  2. What kind of situation is this?
  3. What English phrase normally performs this job?
  4. What nearby choice would change the meaning or tone?

这四个问题会让你从“找对应词”变成“做语言选择”。

That shift is one of the biggest transitions from intermediate to advanced vocabulary use.

28. Use bilingual dictionaries for entry, learner dictionaries for control | 双语词典负责入口,学习词典负责控制

A bilingual dictionary can be efficient when you need a fast concept bridge. But for advanced production, follow it with an English learner dictionary.

  1. Use Chinese to find candidate English words.
  2. Open Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary or Cambridge Dictionary.
  3. Read English definitions.
  4. Check common senses.
  5. Check grammar patterns.
  6. Check collocations.
  7. Check register labels.
  8. Read example sentences.
  9. Compare candidates.
  10. Choose only after context becomes clear.

中文词典告诉你“可能有哪些门”。英文学习词典告诉你“每扇门通向哪里”。

29. Use the Oxford Phrase List to escape single-word thinking | 用 Oxford Phrase List 摆脱单词思维

Oxford’s Phrase List explicitly tells learners to move vocabulary learning beyond individual words. It includes collocations, phrasal verbs, common prepositional phrases and other multiword units aligned to CEFR levels.

For a Chinese speaker, this is especially useful because many translation errors disappear when the stored unit becomes a phrase.

  • account for something
  • with regard to something
  • with respect to something
  • with the exception of something
  • in response to something
  • a range of something
  • aim to do something
  • alternative to something

把完整短语储存下来,会比先翻译每个单词再现场拼装稳定得多。

30. Use corpus thinking to choose between candidates | 用语料库思维在候选词之间做选择

Suppose you want to say “强烈证据” and are considering strong evidence, powerful evidence and intense evidence. Logic alone may not solve it. Real usage does.

Corpus-informed dictionaries and authentic search examples can show which combinations are conventional. Ask:

  • Which phrase appears naturally across credible sources?
  • What nouns usually follow this adjective?
  • What verbs commonly take this noun?
  • Is the phrase academic, conversational or technical?
  • Does the phrase repeatedly occur in one field?

高级词汇使用要从“我觉得这样应该可以”升级到“真实英语通常这样做”。

31. Translation can hide phrase boundaries | 翻译有时会把英语词块边界藏起来

Chinese “考虑到” can lead to several English routes:

  • considering…
  • given…
  • in view of…
  • in light of…
  • taking X into account…
  • with X in mind…

The advanced learner should store these as functional chunks, not reconstruct them from “consider + arrive + account” style word-by-word logic.

一个中文意思,可能对应多种英语篇章功能表达。学习单位要升级成完整词块。

32. Translation can hide grammatical viewpoint | 翻译有时会藏住英语的视角选择

Chinese can often state a situation without forcing the same grammatical viewpoint English chooses.

Example: “这个方法很方便。”

  • This method is convenient. — possible when the method is easy/useful to use.
  • This method makes the process easier. — focuses on effect.
  • This approach is practical. — focuses on feasibility.
  • This tool is easy to use. — focuses on usability.
  • This arrangement is more efficient. — focuses on resource use.

The Chinese adjective may compress several different English evaluations.

所以不要先找“方便的英文高级词”。先问:到底方便在哪里?

33. Translation can hide degree | 翻译也会把程度差别压平

Chinese “可能” may become:

  • may
  • might
  • could
  • is likely to
  • is unlikely to
  • appears to
  • seems to
  • there is a possibility that…

These choices differ in grammar, stance and probability. Advanced vocabulary includes language for calibrated uncertainty.

学术和专业英语尤其需要这种“程度控制”。

34. Translation can hide evaluation | 翻译也会压平评价

Chinese “奇怪” might become:

  • strange — broad
  • odd — mildly strange/unusual
  • peculiar — unusual in a distinctive way
  • bizarre — extremely strange
  • unusual — simply not common
  • unexpected — not anticipated
  • questionable — doubtful rather than merely strange
  • suspicious — suggesting possible wrongdoing or danger

Choosing among them changes the reader’s interpretation.

高级词汇让你不只是表达“有点怪”,而是准确表达“怪在哪里”。

35. Translation can hide formality | 翻译会隐藏正式程度

Chinese “帮助” can lead to:

  • help
  • assist
  • support
  • facilitate
  • aid
  • enable

They do different jobs.

  • help — broad everyday verb
  • assist — more formal, often person/task support
  • support — provide resources, backing or conditions
  • facilitate — make a process easier or possible, formal
  • enable — make it possible for someone/something to do something

Replacing every “help” with “facilitate” is not advanced writing. It is register blindness.

36. Translation can hide agency | 翻译会隐藏“谁做了什么”

Chinese expressions can leave agency implicit. English lexical choices may require you to decide whether something causes, allows, encourages, forces, prevents or merely correlates with an outcome.

例如“这个政策让企业改变做法”:

  • The policy caused firms to change their practices.
  • The policy required firms to change their practices.
  • The policy encouraged firms to change their practices.
  • The policy incentivised firms to change their practices.
  • The policy enabled firms to change their practices.
  • The policy was associated with changes in practice.

Each sentence makes a different causal claim.

高级词汇选择会改变事实强度,所以不能只追求“看起来高级”。

37. Translation can hide evidential strength | 翻译会隐藏证据强度

Chinese “说明” may become:

  • show
  • suggest
  • indicate
  • demonstrate
  • reveal
  • illustrate
  • imply
  • establish

These are not interchangeable reporting verbs. Suggest is weaker than demonstrate. Illustrate can provide an example without proving a general claim. Imply concerns indirect meaning or logical suggestion.

学术高级词汇最重要的能力之一,就是让动词强度和证据强度匹配。

38. Translation can hide time and recurrence | 翻译会隐藏时间与重复性

Chinese “经常发生” can be lexicalised as:

  • often happens
  • occurs frequently
  • is common
  • is a recurring problem
  • tends to occur
  • arises repeatedly

Each phrase packages recurrence differently. Learning them as chunks gives you multiple routes.

39. Translation can hide whether English prefers a verb or an adjective | 英语有时更喜欢动词,有时更喜欢形容词

Chinese “有用” may become:

  • useful
  • helpful
  • valuable
  • practical
  • effective
  • serves a useful purpose
  • helps to clarify…
  • provides a useful framework for…

The best choice depends on what kind of usefulness you mean.

高级英语经常需要先拆开中文里的“大概意思”,再重新选择词性和句法。

40. The FENCE method for breaking translation dependence | 用 FENCE 打破翻译依赖

FenceTaskExample: 问题
F0diagnose automatic translationDo I always say problem?
F1identify the real conceptfault? discussion topic? obstacle? concern?
F2build candidate setproblem, issue, question, concern, challenge
F3learn collocationssolve a problem, raise an issue, address a concern
F4learn registertechnical issue, pressing concern, central question
F5contrast candidateswhy one choice fits better
F6retrieve from situationchoose English without seeing Chinese answer
F7transferuse across work, study, conversation

The goal is not “never translate”. The goal is “translation no longer makes the final decision”.

不是禁止中文,而是让中文退出最后的选词岗位。

41. Use English-to-English paraphrase before Chinese confirmation | 先做英英改写,再用中文确认

Target: constraint.

  1. Read: “a factor that limits what you can do.”
  2. Think of an example: limited budget.
  3. Build phrase: budget constraint.
  4. Contrast: limitation, restriction, bottleneck.
  5. Then confirm Chinese: 限制 / 约束.
  6. Return to English: “The main constraint is available time.”

Chinese becomes a confirmation layer rather than the starting architecture.

42. Use pictures and scenarios when translation is too crude | 当中文翻译太粗时,用场景直接建意义

Some vocabulary is easier to distinguish through situations.

  • glance — look quickly
  • stare — look fixedly for a long time
  • gaze — look steadily, often with interest or admiration
  • peer — look carefully because it is difficult to see
  • glimpse — see something briefly or partially

A Chinese translation may overlap around 看, 瞥, 盯, 凝视. A visual or situational example makes the English distinction clearer.

高级词汇并不一定都要“翻译得更复杂”。有时候直接建立场景更有效。

43. Use minimal pairs of sentences | 用“最小差别句”训练选词边界

Compare one word change at a time.

  • The result is possible. → it can happen.
  • The result is plausible. → it seems believable/reasonable.
  • The result is probable. → it is likely.
  • The claim is important. → broad significance.
  • The claim is significant. → noteworthy / important, often formal.
  • The claim is crucial. → decisive to outcome.

Minimal pairs reduce noise. The learner can see exactly what the lexical change does.

这种训练比一次背十个同义词更容易建立边界。

44. Use error sentences deliberately | 故意研究“哪里不自然”

Advanced learners benefit from analysing plausible but unnatural sentences.

Weak sentenceRepairWhy
We did a big progress. We made substantial progress.progress is uncountable; make progress is the collocation
The policy brought a strong influence. The policy had a significant impact.natural lexical combination
Please open the computer. Please turn on the computer.event-specific verb
I learned many knowledges.I gained a great deal of knowledge.knowledge is usually uncountable; collocation
This method is very convenience. This method is very convenient.word-family choice

Do not shame the error. Use it as a map of the learner’s current lexical system.

错误不是“笨”。错误告诉你:中文和英语在这里怎么分叉。

45. Build a personal translation-trap notebook | 建立自己的“翻译陷阱本”

Chinese triggerMy automatic EnglishBetter routesDecision rule
问题problemissue, question, concern, challenge, faultclassify the type first
提高improveincrease, raise, enhance, strengthen, developwhat exactly becomes higher/better?
影响influenceaffect, impact, shape, determine, constrainwhat kind of causal relation?
说明showsuggest, indicate, demonstrate, illustratehow strong is the evidence?
方便convenientpractical, efficient, easy to use, accessibleconvenient in what way?

Every learner’s notebook will differ. That is the point. Advanced vocabulary problems become increasingly personal.

46. Build a reverse trap notebook for English | 也建立“英文反向陷阱本”

English wordDangerUseful sense routes
issuealways translating as 问题matter, problem, publication, formally release
addressalways translating as 地址speak to, deal with, location
casealways translating as 案例situation, legal case, medical case, argument
accountalways translating as 账户description, explain, percentage, consideration phrase
positionalways translating as 位置job, viewpoint, strategic state, market placement

This trains the opposite direction: English → sense, not English → one Chinese label.

47. Retrieval practice should begin from situations | 提取练习应该从“场景”开始

If the prompt is always Chinese → English, you may strengthen translation dependence. Mix the cues.

  • Situation: “A factor limits what a team can do.” → constraint
  • Definition: “make harm less severe” → mitigate
  • Collocation: ___ concerns about safety → raise
  • Register: casual version of “commence” → start / begin
  • Contrast: effective vs efficient → explain the difference
  • Image/scenario: brief accidental view → glimpse
  • Chinese cue: 提高标准 → raise standards

Use Chinese sometimes, English definitions sometimes, images sometimes and scenarios sometimes. Multiple retrieval routes make the network more independent.

48. Speaking practice: ban one vague translation for five minutes | 口语训练:五分钟禁用一个“万能翻译”

Choose a broad word you overuse: problem, improve, good, bad, affect, important.

For five minutes, discuss one topic without using that word. You must classify more precisely.

Ban problem and talk about education:

  • learning gap
  • misconception
  • constraint
  • weakness
  • difficulty
  • challenge
  • bottleneck
  • error pattern

This is not about avoiding a perfectly good word forever. It is a temporary drill to force finer classification.

49. Writing practice: identify Chinese-shaped lexical choices | 写作训练:找出“中文形状”的英语

After drafting, underline phrases that were mentally translated from Chinese. Ask:

  • Would an English learner dictionary show this pattern?
  • Is the collocation conventional?
  • Am I using one English word because one Chinese word triggered it?
  • Is there a more precise event verb?
  • Is the register right?
  • Does the noun behave as countable or uncountable?
  • Would a phrase be more natural than a literal verb?

Do not rewrite every sentence. Repair repeated patterns first.

50. Reading practice: mark sense, not just word | 阅读训练:标“词义”,不要只标“单词”

When a familiar English word appears in a new sense, mark it S2, S3 or NEW SENSE.

Example with position:

  • position in space
  • job position
  • financial position
  • policy position
  • position a brand
  • be in a position to act

Advanced reading grows quickly when familiar words stop being invisible.

51. Listening practice: hear chunks before translating | 听力训练:先听词块,不要逐词翻译

If you hear take into account and internally translate each word, comprehension slows down. Store the whole unit as a meaning route: consider something as part of a decision.

  • in light of
  • with respect to
  • as a result of
  • in response to
  • to a large extent
  • there is little evidence to suggest

The Oxford Phrase List exists for exactly this broader principle: important vocabulary includes phrases, not only headwords.

词块一旦成为整体,听力处理就不必每次经过中文转站。

52. Build an English-first vocabulary card | 建立“英文优先”词汇卡

FieldExample: mitigate
English definitionmake something harmful or serious less severe
Scenarioreduce the damage caused by a risk
Chinese bridge减轻;缓解
Collocationsmitigate risk, mitigate damage, mitigate the impact
Contrastprevent = stop from happening; eliminate = remove completely
Registerformal / professional / academic
Personal sentenceWe changed the schedule to mitigate the risk of delay.
Retrieval cueless severe, not necessarily gone

The Chinese field stays. It simply stops controlling the card.

53. The 3-column contrast notebook | 三栏对比笔记法

Chinese conceptEnglish choicesDecision boundary
证明/说明show, suggest, indicate, demonstrate, establishevidence strength
重要important, significant, crucial, critical, materialtype/degree/context of importance
减少reduce, decrease, lower, curb, mitigate, alleviatequantity vs control vs severity
改善improve, enhance, strengthen, refine, optimisewhat kind of better?
问题problem, issue, concern, question, challengeproblem type / discourse role

This notebook turns translation into comparison rather than dependence.

54. A 45-minute anti-translation training session | 45 分钟“去一词一译”训练

TimeTask
0–8 minRead one demanding English text without translating every word.
8–15 minSelect 3 familiar words used in interesting senses.
15–22 minWrite English definitions and sense contrasts.
22–30 minBuild collocations and phrase patterns.
30–35 minAdd a short Chinese bridge only after English analysis.
35–40 minRetrieve from scenarios, not translations.
40–45 minUse the words in speaking or writing on a new topic.

Three words are enough if the contrast work is deep.

55. A seven-day translation reset | 七天翻译重置

DayMission
1List 10 Chinese words you over-translate into one English word.
2Build candidate fans for 问题, 提高, 影响.
3Build reverse sense fans for issue, case, address.
4Collect 20 collocations that replace literal translation.
5Speak for 5 minutes while banning two overused words.
6Edit one old piece of writing for lexical transfer errors.
7No Chinese prompts: retrieve English from definitions and scenarios.

The goal is not to stop using Mandarin in seven days. The goal is to prove that English can begin to retrieve from meaning directly.

56. A 30-day lexical independence challenge | 30 天词汇独立挑战

  • Build 20 Chinese → English translation fans.
  • Build 20 English → sense clusters.
  • Record 50 collocations that cannot be predicted safely word by word.
  • Learn 25 dependent-preposition patterns.
  • Compare 20 near-synonym sets.
  • Mark 30 familiar words used in new senses while reading.
  • Complete 10 English-definition retrieval sessions.
  • Record 8 two-minute spoken responses without Chinese notes.
  • Rewrite 4 paragraphs to repair literal lexical translation.
  • Build a personal list of your 15 most persistent translation triggers.

The target is not “think only in English”. The target is more practical: do not require Chinese to make every lexical decision.

57. The first weak link diagnostic | 第一个弱点诊断

SymptomLikely weak linkRepair first
I always choose the same English word for one Chinese word.one-to-one mappingtranslation fans
I know synonyms but choose badly.semantic boundaryminimal pairs + decision rules
My sentences are understandable but unnatural.collocationphrase harvesting
I sound too formal.registerthree-register comparison
I use the right word with the wrong preposition.lexical grammarwhole-unit storage
I know one meaning only.polysemysense clustering
I translate while listening and fall behind.chunk processingphrase-level listening
I cannot speak without Chinese notes.retrieval routedefinition/scenario prompts

Repair the earliest failure. A learner who still maps one-to-one will not solve the problem simply by memorising more synonyms.

58. How a strong tutor handles translation | 高水平导师怎样使用翻译?

A strong tutor does not pretend the learner’s first language does not exist. That wastes an enormous cognitive resource. Instead, the tutor controls when translation helps and when it begins to distort English.

  • use Chinese to establish difficult concepts quickly
  • show when Chinese and English boundaries diverge
  • contrast several English candidates
  • teach collocations and grammatical frames
  • move back to English definitions
  • require scenario-based retrieval
  • test register and connotation
  • remove Chinese support gradually
  • track repeated individual transfer errors
  • test the same lexical choice in new contexts

This is consistent with eduKateSG’s Tutor Classification Model: advanced teaching is not merely explanation. It is diagnosis, modelling, controlled release, feedback and transfer.

好的导师不是告诉学生“不要翻译”。好的导师让学生知道什么时候翻译有帮助,什么时候翻译会开始误导。

59. How this lesson avoids collision with the Advanced English grammar lane | 本课与“高级英语语法迁移”路线的边界

The separate How to Learn Advanced English (Chinese Edition) course includes sentence architecture, tense, articles, subjects and broader Mandarin-to-English grammatical transfer. This vocabulary lesson does not own those mechanisms.

This lesson owns only the lexical question:

How do I stop forcing one Chinese lexical category into one English word and instead choose English from meaning, context, collocation, register and phrase behaviour?

这样两个分支可以互相连接,但不会互相抢主题。

60. Connect to eduKate’s canonical vocabulary owners | 连接 eduKate 现有词汇机制页

本课负责把这些机制组合成“中文母语高级词汇选择训练”,不重复已有机制所有权。

61. Recommended books and apex tools | 推荐书籍与优质工具

62. SEO language map | 本课关键词范围

This lesson naturally serves advanced English vocabulary for Chinese speakers, Mandarin to English vocabulary, Chinese English translation mistakes, one-to-one translation, English lexical transfer, lexical choice, English polysemy, English synonyms, near synonyms, English collocations, English register, connotation, English phrase learning, C1 vocabulary, C2 vocabulary, advanced English vocabulary learning methods, English dictionary skills, Oxford Phrase List, English Vocabulary in Use Advanced, English Collocations in Use Advanced, 高级英语词汇, 中文母语英语学习, 中式英语词汇, 英语一词多义, 英语近义词, 英语搭配, 英语语域, 英语词汇怎么学, 英汉翻译误区, 一词一译, C1 英语词汇 and C2 英语词汇.

Search terms are routed into real teaching. They should never be repeated mechanically for ranking.

63. Your assignment | 本课作业

Choose five Chinese triggers:

  • 问题
  • 提高
  • 影响
  • 说明
  • 方便

For each one:

  1. Write your automatic English translation.
  2. Find at least four alternative English routes.
  3. Write the meaning difference.
  4. Add one natural collocation to each candidate.
  5. Mark register.
  6. Write one sentence where your automatic translation is wrong.
  7. Write one sentence where it is correct.
  8. Close the notes.
  9. Retrieve from a situation, not from Chinese alone.
  10. Use one candidate tomorrow in a different topic.

Then choose three English words: issue, address, case. Build reverse sense fans without starting from Chinese.

如果你开始先看语境,再选英文,而不是先抓住一个中文词再翻译,本课就成功了。

64. The final rule | 最后一条规则

Translate the meaning when you need a bridge. Choose the English from the English situation.

需要桥的时候,可以翻译意思;真正选词的时候,要从英语语境里选。

Chinese gives you concepts. English gives you its own boundaries, collocations, patterns, registers and conventional ways of describing events. Advanced vocabulary begins when you respect both systems rather than forcing one to behave like the other.

中文帮你理解世界,英语有自己的切法。真正高级的学习,不是抛弃中文,也不是逐字翻译中文,而是让两种语言各自保持清楚。

Then translation becomes what it should have been all along: a bridge you can cross—and leave behind when the road continues.

过桥,然后继续走。
