How to Learn Advanced English Vocabulary (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.004 | Move from Correct English to Natural English | 第004课:从“正确英语”走向“自然英语”

Correct English tells the reader what you mean. Natural English makes the language feel as if it belongs there.
“正确英语”让人听懂你。“自然英语”让语言像是本来就应该这样出现。

You can write a sentence that is grammatically correct and still sounds translated. Every noun is legal. Every verb is real. The tense is correct. The sentence can be understood. Yet an experienced English user feels friction.

一句话可以语法完全正确,却还是“像翻译”。每个词都是真的,时态也对,意思也能懂,可是熟练的英语使用者会感觉到不自然。

At advanced level, this gap matters. It affects essays, reports, presentations, interviews, professional messages and serious conversation. The learner no longer asks only, “Is this English wrong?” The stronger question is:

Is this the English that people normally choose for this meaning, in this situation, with this tone?

这个意思、这个场景、这个语气下,英语通常会这样说吗?

This lesson is the integration point for the first four lessons of the Advanced English Vocabulary Chinese Edition. Lesson 001 built lexical depth. Lesson 002 expanded word families and phrase networks. Lesson 003 broke one-to-one translation. Lesson 004 now asks whether the resulting language is natural enough to survive real English.

1. “Correct” and “natural” are different tests | “正确”和“自然”是两种不同测试

Grammar asks whether a structure follows the rules of English. Naturalness asks whether the lexical choices and combinations are conventional, appropriate and expected enough for the situation.

语法在问:“这句子有没有违反英语结构规则?”自然度在问:“英语使用者通常会不会这样选词、这样搭、这样组织?”

SentenceGrammarNaturalness
I made a big progress.incorrectunnatural
I made a large amount of progress.correctpossible but heavier than needed
I made substantial progress.correctnatural formal/neutral choice
I progressed substantially.correctpossible, more formal and context-dependent

Advanced learning begins when you can distinguish these layers rather than treating every non-error as equally good.

2. Natural English is not “native-like perfection” | 自然英语不等于“必须像母语者”

Do not turn naturalness into an impossible accent or identity target. A Mandarin-speaking learner does not need to erase their linguistic background. The practical target is reliable, conventional, audience-appropriate English that does not force the listener to repair the sentence mentally.

自然英语不是要求你“变成母语者”。真正有用的目标是:表达稳定、搭配常见、场景合适,听者或读者不需要在脑中替你重新改写。

At C1–C2, individuality remains. Writers and speakers choose different styles. Naturalness does not mean everyone sounds the same. It means your choices are deliberate enough that unusual wording is unusual by intention, not by accident.

高级英语当然可以有个人风格。关键是:如果你选择一个不常见的表达,最好是因为你想产生某种效果,而不是因为中文翻译把你带到了那里。

3. The five layers of natural vocabulary | 自然词汇的五层结构

LayerQuestionExample
MeaningDoes the word express the intended idea?mitigate ≠ eliminate
CollocationDo the surrounding words normally combine?make progress, not do progress
RegisterDoes it fit the social/academic/professional setting?start vs commence
ConnotationDoes it carry the intended evaluation?persistent vs stubborn
Frequency / conventionalityIs this a normal route for the meaning?heavy rain, not strong rain

If all five align, the language often feels natural. If one breaks, the sentence may still be understandable but marked.

高级自然度并不是“神秘语感”。它可以拆成多个可训练的判断。

4. Collocation is the first naturalness filter | 搭配是自然度的第一道过滤器

English words have preferred neighbours. Some combinations are strong conventions; others are merely grammatical possibilities.

  • heavy rain
  • strong evidence
  • deep concern
  • serious problem
  • substantial progress
  • reach a conclusion
  • raise awareness
  • pose a threat
  • meet a requirement
  • draw attention to

The detailed mechanism belongs to eduKateSengkang’s canonical page How Collocation Turns Vocabulary Knowledge Into Natural, Precise English. Here we use collocation as one test inside a larger naturalness system.

如果一句话语法对但“怪”,第一件事就检查核心词周围的搭配。

5. “Every word is correct” can still produce strange English | 每个词都对,整句仍然可以怪

Understandable but weakMore naturalReason
do a decisionmake a decisioncollocation
give an influencehave an influence / affectphrase convention
big rainheavy raincollocation
strongly importantextremely important / highly significantadverb–adjective pattern
learn knowledgegain / acquire knowledgeverb–noun collocation
open the computerturn on the computerevent-specific verb

A learner may know every individual word in the right-hand column already. The breakthrough is learning the combinations as units.

6. Learn lexical bundles for recurring thinking moves | 把反复出现的“思考动作”学成词块

Advanced English repeatedly performs the same intellectual jobs: defining, qualifying, contrasting, conceding, narrowing, explaining cause, reporting evidence and returning to a conclusion.

Thinking moveNatural phrase routes
DefineBy X, I mean… / X refers to…
Qualifyto some extent / under certain conditions / this does not necessarily mean…
Contrastby contrast / whereas / in contrast to…
Concedealthough… / while it is true that… / admittedly…
Evidencethe evidence suggests… / the findings indicate…
Narrowmore specifically… / in this context…
Returntaken together… / overall… / this suggests that…

These are not templates to stuff into every essay. They are conventional routes for recurring meaning jobs.

自然度往往来自“这个思考动作有一个英语里很常见的做法”,而不是来自更复杂的单词。

7. Frequency matters because conventional language repeats | 频率重要,因为自然语言会反复出现

Common does not mean primitive. High-frequency expressions often carry enormous communicative value because English users repeatedly choose them.

高级学习者有时会故意避开常见词,担心“太简单”。这是误区。自然英语的大量骨架,本来就是高频语言。

  • make sure
  • take into account
  • in response to
  • as a result
  • at the same time
  • in terms of
  • the main reason is…
  • it depends on…
  • there is a difference between…

There is no prize for replacing a common natural route with a rare awkward one.

常用,不等于低级;合适,才是真正高级。

8. Natural English often chooses simpler words than learners expect | 自然英语经常比学习者想象得更简单

Compare:

  • utilise → often simply use
  • commence → often simply start or begin
  • endeavour → often simply try in ordinary contexts
  • approximately → often about in conversation
  • purchase → often buy outside formal contexts
  • assist → often help in everyday English

Formal vocabulary has a legitimate place. But if the situation does not require it, simpler language is often more natural and more confident.

很多非母语高级学习者会把“难”误当成“好”。真正成熟的英语使用者反而敢用简单词,因为他们知道简单词什么时候最准确。

9. Register is social accuracy | 语域就是“社交准确度”

Vocabulary must fit the relationship and purpose.

SituationNatural optionMarked option
Message to a friendCan we start a little later?Could we commence at a later time?
Project emailWe need to revise the timeline. We need to change the time thing.
Academic essayThe findings suggest a significant difference. The results say there is a big difference.
Customer supportWe’re sorry for the delay. We hereby express regret regarding the aforementioned delay.

Naturalness is therefore not one universal list. The same phrase can be natural in one register and strange in another.

10. Build three-register vocabulary | 同一个意思,建立三套语域选择

For high-value concepts, build conversational, neutral and formal routes.

MeaningConversationalNeutralFormal / academic
beginkick offstartcommence / initiate
helpgive a handhelpassist / facilitate / support
showpoint outshowindicate / demonstrate
fixsort outfixresolve / rectify / remediate
useuseuseemploy / utilise where appropriate

The goal is not to memorise three synonyms for every word. It is to train situational choice.

高级词汇真正的自由,是你可以向上、向下切换,而不是永远卡在最正式的一档。

11. Connotation is emotional precision | 感情色彩就是“情绪与评价的精度”

Compare:

  • confident / self-assured / arrogant
  • persistent / determined / stubborn
  • curious / inquisitive / nosy
  • slim / thin / skinny
  • economical / inexpensive / cheap
  • assertive / forceful / aggressive

Naturalness includes choosing the word that carries the intended evaluation. A dictionary definition may not make that social meaning fully visible.

这也是为什么高级词汇一定要学习 connotation。中文翻译如果只保留“基本意思”,会把很多人际信息压掉。

For the full mechanism, route to How Connotation Changes Meaning Beyond Dictionary Definitions.

12. Naturalness often lives in the verb | 自然度经常藏在动词里

Mandarin-speaking learners sometimes build English around broad verbs such as do, make, have, get, give. These verbs are essential, but English also has highly conventional event verbs.

Broad versionMore precise natural route
do an analysisanalyse / conduct an analysis
give a suggestionmake a suggestion / suggest
make the risk smallerreduce / mitigate the risk
do an investigationconduct / carry out an investigation
make the plan betterrefine / improve the plan
give a reasonprovide / give a reason; explain why

Do not replace every broad verb automatically. Instead ask whether English has a conventional verb that packages the event more precisely.

13. Natural English classifies events precisely | 自然英语会更准确地给事件分类

Chinese “改变” can become:

  • change — broad neutral
  • adjust — make a relatively small alteration
  • modify — change part of something, often formal/technical
  • revise — change after review
  • transform — change deeply
  • restructure — change organisation
  • convert — change form/use/system
  • shift — move position/emphasis/tendency
  • adapt — change to fit conditions
  • reconfigure — rearrange system components

A sentence becomes more natural when the verb matches the actual kind of change.

自然度的一个重要来源,是事件分类正确

14. Natural English respects countability | 自然英语会尊重名词自己的“数量行为”

  • information — not normally “informations”
  • advice — not normally “advices”
  • research — usually uncountable in general reference
  • evidence — generally uncountable
  • equipment — uncountable
  • furniture — uncountable

Correct lexical behaviour includes measure phrases:

  • a piece of advice
  • a piece of information
  • a piece of evidence
  • an item of equipment
  • a piece of furniture
  • a body of research

At advanced level, grammar and vocabulary merge. Countability belongs inside word knowledge.

15. Natural English stores prepositions with the word | 自然英语会把固定介词和词一起储存

  • responsible for
  • capable of
  • consistent with
  • relevant to
  • dependent on
  • contribute to
  • result in
  • result from
  • distinguish A from B
  • associate A with B

If you repeatedly choose the wrong preposition, do not study “prepositions” in isolation first. Make the lexical unit larger.

不要只存 consistent。存 consistent with。不要只存 contribute。存 contribute to

16. Natural English often uses a phrase where translation expects one word | 中文期待一个词,英语可能更自然地用一个短语

Chinese concepts may map naturally to English phrase frames:

  • 考虑到 → take into account / in light of / given
  • 在很大程度上 → to a large extent
  • 值得注意 → it is worth noting that / notably
  • 从实际角度 → from a practical perspective
  • 没有充分证据 → there is insufficient evidence / there is little evidence to suggest

Natural vocabulary therefore includes multiword units, not only headwords.

17. Natural English often uses one precise word where translation produces a long phrase | 有时候反过来:英语一个词就能压缩很长的意思

  • make less severe → mitigate / alleviate depending on context
  • make something easier to do → facilitate
  • cause somebody to want to act → motivate / incentivise depending on mechanism
  • make a system work together → integrate / coordinate depending on meaning
  • change to fit conditions → adapt
  • make more exact → refine / clarify depending on target

Compression is useful only when the reader knows the word. Natural English includes the ability to expand again for another audience.

真正高级的词汇不是“永远压缩”,而是你能压缩,也能展开。

18. Naturalness depends on audience knowledge | 自然度还取决于听者知道多少

Technical vocabulary may be natural among specialists and unnatural with a general audience.

Concept: variance.

  • Specialist: “The model explains a substantial proportion of the variance.”
  • General professional: “The model explains much of the difference in outcomes.”
  • Child: “The model helps explain why the results are different.”

Same underlying idea, different lexical load.

自然英语不是“固定的一套高级词”。它是根据对象调整词汇密度。

19. Naturalness depends on medium | 口语、邮件、论文的自然选择不同

A phrase natural in a report may be heavy in speech. A conversational phrase may be too loose in formal writing.

MeaningSpeechEmail/reportAcademic writing
becausebecausebecause / due tobecause / due to / attributable to depending on claim
aboutaboutregarding / aboutwith respect to / concerning where needed
find outfind outdetermine / find outestablish / determine / investigate
get betterget betterimproveimprove / increase / strengthen depending on metric

Do not learn register only as formal vs informal. Learn medium-specific convention.

20. Natural English avoids unnecessary inflation | 自然英语会避免不必要的“膨胀”

Compare:

Inflated: The utilisation of this methodology facilitates the enhancement of student comprehension.

Natural formal: This method helps students understand the material more clearly.

The first sentence is not necessarily ungrammatical. It simply spends more language to deliver less clarity.

高级写作最大的陷阱之一,就是把名词化和大词密度误当成专业度。

Natural formal English often feels calm because the vocabulary does exactly enough work.

21. Naturalness is also restraint | 自然度也包括“克制”

A C2 learner does not need to display C2 vocabulary in every sentence. Sometimes the advanced decision is not to use the advanced-looking word.

  • Use use if utilise adds nothing.
  • Use start if commence sounds ceremonial.
  • Use help if facilitate misstates the mechanism.
  • Use problem if the issue really is a straightforward problem.
  • Use important if no finer distinction is needed.

Precision can be simple.

简单但准确,比复杂但错误更高级。

22. Naturalness requires the right degree of certainty | 自然英语会控制“确定到什么程度”

Compare:

  • The policy causes the decline.
  • The policy contributes to the decline.
  • The policy may contribute to the decline.
  • The decline appears to be associated with the policy.
  • The evidence is consistent with a possible policy effect.

Natural academic and professional English matches lexical strength to evidence strength.

如果证据只支持“可能相关”,却写成 definitely causes,问题不是语法,而是词汇强度失控。

23. Natural reporting verbs carry different evidence claims | 报告动词会改变证据强度

VerbTypical effect
suggestpoints toward a conclusion without fully proving it
indicateshows a sign or evidence of something
showbroad, flexible reporting verb
demonstrateoften stronger: shows clearly through evidence/reasoning
illustrateprovides an example or makes a point visible
revealmakes something previously hidden/unknown visible
establishshows firmly enough to treat as supported

Chinese “说明” can trigger all of these. Natural English chooses according to the evidence relationship.

24. Natural English knows when idioms are unnecessary | 自然英语不会为了“高级”强行塞习语

Idioms can be useful and culturally rich. But a paragraph does not become advanced because it contains the tip of the iceberg, a double-edged sword, think outside the box and when all is said and done.

太多习语反而会让非母语写作看起来像在展示“背过的表达”。

Prioritise high-frequency collocations and phrase frames before decorative idioms.

顺序通常应该是:搭配 → 高频词块 → 功能表达 → 常用习语 → 低频习语。

25. Naturalness grows from repeated authentic exposure | 自然度来自大量真实输入中的“重复发现”

You cannot learn every natural combination from rules. At advanced level, repeated exposure becomes essential. Read and listen widely enough that conventional phrases begin to feel familiar because you have met them many times in meaningful contexts.

这就是为什么只背词典定义不够。自然度需要你在真实文章、访谈、讲座、书籍、报告和对话里不断看到“英语自己反复选择什么”。

  • serious journalism
  • well-edited nonfiction
  • academic writing in your field
  • professional reports
  • long-form interviews
  • documentaries with transcripts
  • quality fiction and memoir
  • public lectures and discussions

Authentic input does not replace deliberate study. It supplies the examples deliberate study needs.

26. Read like a phrase collector, not a word hunter | 阅读时不要只抓生词,要抓“自然表达”

Advanced learners often underline unknown words. Add a second habit: underline ordinary-looking phrases that perform useful jobs naturally.

  • little reason to believe that…
  • comes at a cost
  • raises broader questions about…
  • is difficult to reconcile with…
  • plays only a limited role
  • has yet to be established
  • in practical terms…
  • the distinction matters because…

None of these may contain a rare word. All can improve advanced English.

自然英语真正高价值的东西,经常“看起来不难”,所以特别容易被高级学习者忽略。

27. Listen for recurring frames | 听力里要抓“反复出现的框架”

  • the thing is…
  • what tends to happen is…
  • the main point is…
  • that depends on…
  • the reason I say that is…
  • having said that…
  • to put it another way…
  • what I mean by X is…

These frames make spontaneous speech possible because they reduce the number of new decisions required in real time.

高级听力不只是在识别单词,也是在发现英语如何把思考组织成可重复的语块。

28. Shadow phrases, not just sounds | 跟读时,不只模仿音,还要模仿“词块”

When shadowing an interview or lecture, mark thought groups:

What tends to happen / is that people focus on the immediate cost / rather than the long-term effect.

Now the exercise trains pronunciation, phrase boundaries and lexical retrieval together.

对中文母语高级学习者来说,这一步非常有价值,因为“自然”同时存在于词汇选择和声音组织里。

29. Repeat the same speaking task three times | 同一个口语任务,说三遍

  1. Round 1: communicate the meaning freely.
  2. Review: identify vague words and unnatural combinations.
  3. Round 2: repair collocations and phrase frames.
  4. Delay: wait one or two days.
  5. Round 3: speak again without notes.

Do not change topic every time. Repetition frees attention. Once the idea is familiar, you can focus on lexical quality.

第一次先把意思说出来,第二次修自然度,第三次看这些自然表达能不能自动出来。

30. Record yourself and hunt for “translation gravity” | 录音以后,找“翻译重力”

Translation gravity is the tendency to fall back toward the first English word triggered by a Chinese concept.

Common signals:

  • overusing problem
  • overusing improve
  • overusing important
  • overusing very
  • overusing make
  • overusing good/bad
  • repeating the same reporting verb show

The repair is not “never use these words”. The repair is to ask whether a more precise conventional route exists in that sentence.

31. Natural writing needs a lexical edit, not only a grammar edit | 写作修改要有“词汇轮”,不能只有语法轮

After correcting grammar, run a separate lexical pass.

  1. Circle vague nouns: thing, aspect, factor, situation.
  2. Underline repeated broad verbs: do, make, get, have.
  3. Check major noun collocations.
  4. Check adjective–noun combinations.
  5. Check dependent prepositions.
  6. Check register.
  7. Remove unnecessary “advanced” words.
  8. Check whether claims are too strong.
  9. Check repeated Chinese-to-English lexical transfers.
  10. Read the paragraph aloud.

Grammar can make a paragraph legal. Lexical editing makes it usable.

32. Read aloud to detect lexical friction | 朗读可以帮助你发现“词汇摩擦”

Some combinations look acceptable on the page but feel heavy when spoken. Reading aloud exposes overloaded noun phrases, repeated formal vocabulary and awkward collocations.

朗读不是只检查发音。它也是一种编辑工具。

Ask:

  • Would I actually say this phrase?
  • Does the sentence require too many abstract nouns?
  • Is the verb doing enough work?
  • Does one phrase feel imported from Chinese structure?
  • Would a shorter common phrase be clearer?

33. Natural English uses verbs to keep movement visible | 自然英语经常用动词保持“动作感”

Noun-heavy: The implementation of the evaluation resulted in the identification of several areas requiring improvement.

More direct: When the team evaluated the programme, it identified several areas to improve.

Both may be grammatically valid. The best choice depends on genre and focus. Natural English varies the balance rather than treating nominalisation as a prestige feature.

高级学习者要学会在“压缩”和“可读性”之间切换。

34. Natural English varies repetition intelligently | 自然英语不会机械地“消灭重复”

Another advanced-learner trap is replacing repeated key words with synonyms simply to avoid repetition. This can reduce clarity.

If a paragraph is about evidence, repeating evidence may be clearer than cycling through proof, indication, testimony, substantiation when those words do not mean exactly the same thing.

高级写作不是“同一个词绝对不能出现两次”。关键概念适度重复可以保持指代稳定。

Use variation when meaning changes, not merely because a thesaurus is available.

35. Natural English distinguishes precision from variety | “词汇丰富”不等于“每次都换词”

Lexical variety is valuable when it reflects real semantic control.

  • problem → issue because the discourse role changed
  • increase → surge because the rate and size changed
  • say → argue because a position is being defended
  • show → suggest because the evidence is weaker
  • important → crucial because the factor is decisive

That is meaningful variety. Random synonym replacement is not.

36. Naturalness and idiomaticity are related but not identical | “自然”和“地道”有关,但不是完全一样

Idiomatic English includes conventional expressions whose form may not be predictable from individual words. Natural English is broader. A sentence can be natural without containing any idiom.

“地道”常常让学习者想到习语。其实最自然的句子可能完全没有习语,只是搭配、语域和信息结构都对。

For example:

We need more evidence before we can reach a firm conclusion.

Nothing flashy. Very natural.

37. Naturalness requires selection under pressure | 真正自然,要在压力下也能选出来

A phrase that looks natural when copied from a notebook is not yet productive vocabulary. Naturalness must survive retrieval.

  • Can you retrieve the collocation while speaking?
  • Can you select the right register in an email?
  • Can you distinguish effective from efficient without checking?
  • Can you choose suggest instead of prove when evidence is limited?
  • Can you avoid the Chinese-trigger word when another route fits better?

That is why retrieval practice remains central. Use How Retrieval Practice Works for the underlying mechanism.

38. Use “situation → phrase”, not only “Chinese → English” | 提取时用“场景 → 英语”,不要永远“中文 → 英文”

  • Situation: evidence is strong but not conclusive → “the evidence strongly suggests…”
  • Situation: one factor limits the whole process → “a bottleneck / constraint”
  • Situation: reduce the severity of a risk → “mitigate the risk”
  • Situation: formally start an investigation → “initiate an investigation”
  • Situation: casual start of an event → “kick off”

Scenario-based retrieval trains the same route real communication uses: meaning first, language second.

自然英语要从意思直接走向英语,而不是永远先经过中文词。

39. Build a naturalness notebook | 建立“自然英语笔记本”

FieldExample
My phrasegive a strong influence
Natural routehave a significant influence / have a strong influence / strongly influence / have a significant impact
Whycollocation and verb choice
Registerneutral/formal depending on route
Chinese trigger产生强烈影响
New sentenceThe policy had a significant impact on small firms.
Returntomorrow, next week, new topic

Do not fill this notebook with every correction. Record repeated mechanisms.

如果一个错误只发生一次,改掉就好。如果同一种搭配问题反复出现,才值得进入个人系统。

40. Use contrastive naturalness drills | 做“自然度对比题”

Choose the better option and explain why.

  • heavy rain / strong rain
  • make progress / do progress
  • strong evidence / powerful evidence
  • raise a concern / lift a concern
  • reach a conclusion / make a conclusion
  • highly unlikely / strongly unlikely
  • deeply concerned / highly concerned

Then add register:

  • start / commence
  • help / facilitate
  • buy / purchase
  • ask / inquire

The learner must explain the decision, not merely choose the answer.

41. Use “too formal / too casual / just right” drills | 做“太正式 / 太口语 / 刚刚好”训练

Situation: email to a university lecturer.

  • “Hey, I wanna know if…” → probably too casual.
  • “I hereby wish to inquire regarding…” → unnecessarily formal.
  • “I’m writing to ask whether…” → often natural.

Situation: message to a close friend.

  • “I hereby wish to inform you…” → comically formal.
  • “Just wanted to let you know…” → natural conversational route.

Register becomes easier when practised as real social decisions.

42. Use one message, three audiences | 一个信息,对三个对象表达

Message: “The plan has a serious weakness.”

  • Friend: There’s a big problem with the plan.
  • Manager: The plan has a significant weakness we should address.
  • Formal review: The proposal contains a material weakness that may affect implementation.

The best vocabulary depends on who needs the message.

高级词汇不是只有“一个最佳答案”。很多时候有“对这个对象最合适的答案”。

43. Use one idea, three levels of certainty | 一个意思,练三种确定程度

Idea: training improves performance.

  • Training improves performance. — strong general claim.
  • Training can improve performance. — possibility/capacity.
  • Training may contribute to improved performance. — cautious causal claim.
  • The findings are consistent with a positive training effect. — evidence-focused cautious framing.

Natural advanced English controls claim strength as part of vocabulary choice.

44. Use one concept, three lexical densities | 一个概念,练三种词汇密度

Concept: a system has too many steps and wastes time.

  • Simple: The process has too many steps and takes too long.
  • Professional: The process is inefficient because it contains unnecessary steps.
  • Technical: The workflow contains redundant stages that increase processing time without adding value.

All three can be excellent. Naturalness depends on audience and purpose.

这就是高级学习者真正要掌握的“词汇压缩比”。

45. Use corpus-style verification | 当你不确定“自然不自然”,用真实用法验证

At advanced level, intuition is useful but incomplete. Use strong learner dictionaries and authentic examples to test combinations.

  • Does this adjective commonly modify this noun?
  • Which verbs commonly precede this noun?
  • Which preposition normally follows this adjective?
  • Is the phrase common in speech, journalism or academic writing?
  • Does the phrase appear mainly in one specialist field?
  • Do credible writers repeatedly choose another expression instead?

Use Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, the Oxford Phrase List and other corpus-informed learner resources as evidence sources.

不要把“我觉得可以”当成最终判断。

46. Ask “Would English choose this route?” | 不只问“能不能”,还问“英语会不会这样走”

This is the advanced naturalness question.

Possible is not the same as probable.

A phrase can be theoretically understandable but rarely chosen. Naturalness improves when you learn high-probability routes.

高级英语要从“字典允许什么”继续走到“真实英语经常选择什么”。

47. Naturalness becomes a probability sense over time | 所谓“语感”,很大一部分是长期形成的概率感

After enough high-quality exposure, some combinations begin to feel expected and others feel unlikely. This is not magic. Your language system has accumulated distributional experience.

你见过 strong evidence 很多次,powerful evidence 相对少;见过 heavy rain 很多次,strong rain 很少。久而久之,大脑开始形成“概率感”。

This intuition must still be checked when stakes are high or the field is specialised. But repeated exposure explains why advanced naturalness cannot be learned entirely from rules.

48. Build intuition deliberately | “语感”也可以主动训练

  1. Read high-quality English every day.
  2. Mark useful ordinary phrases, not only rare words.
  3. Collect collocations in context.
  4. Compare near-synonyms.
  5. Listen with transcripts.
  6. Shadow thought groups.
  7. Retrieve phrases without notes.
  8. Use them in new topics.
  9. Check your output against authentic examples.
  10. Record repeated personal errors.

语感不是“天生有/没有”。它可以通过大量高质量输入、比较、提取和反馈慢慢校准。

49. The FENCE naturalness system | FENCE 自然英语系统

FenceQuestionRepair
F0 DiagnoseWhat exactly feels unnatural?identify repeated pattern
F1 MeaningIs the word semantically right?reclassify the idea
F2 CollocationDo the neighbours fit?learn conventional combination
F3 Grammar patternIs the lexical frame complete?store preposition/complement with word

F5 ConnotationDoes the evaluation fit?contrast nearby choices
F6 ConventionalityWould English normally choose this route?verify authentic usage
F7 RetrievalCan I produce it without support?closed-book recall
F8 TransferDoes it survive new contexts?new topic/audience/medium

Do not jump straight from “wrong” to “memorise correction”. Diagnose which fence failed.

高级纠错不是只把红笔答案抄三次,而是找出系统哪一层没有稳定。

50. Build a personal “unnatural but understandable” corpus | 建立自己的“能懂但不自然”语料库

This corpus is more valuable than a generic error list because it reflects your personal transfer patterns.

My versionNatural versionFailure type
do progressmake progresscollocation
very conveniencevery convenientword-family choice
give a big influencehave a major impact / strongly influencecollocation + event framing
open the computerturn on the computerevent-specific verb
learn many knowledgesgain a great deal of knowledgecountability + collocation

Sort errors by mechanism. When one mechanism repeats, make it next week’s training target.

51. The first weak link diagnostic | 第一个弱点诊断

SymptomLikely weak linkRepair first
Grammar is correct but I sound translated.collocation / event framingphrase harvesting

Find the first break. Repair that before adding more vocabulary.

52. A 45-minute natural-English vocabulary session | 45 分钟自然词汇训练

TimeTask
0–10 minRead or listen to one high-quality English source.
10–17 minCollect 5 ordinary but useful natural phrases.
17–24 minCompare them with how you would normally say the idea.
24–31 minCheck collocation, register and connotation.
31–36 minClose notes and retrieve from meaning.
36–42 minUse the phrases in speaking or writing.
42–45 minRecord one repeated weak link and schedule return.

The session is deliberately small. Naturalness grows from repeated high-quality decisions, not from enormous daily word counts.

53. A seven-day naturalness reset | 七天自然度重置

DayMission
1Find 10 phrases in your English that are correct but feel translated.
2Repair collocations.
3Repair register and over-formality.
4Compare connotation and near-synonyms.
5Listen to one interview and collect 10 natural spoken frames.
6Rewrite one paragraph using simpler, more conventional English.
7Speak for five minutes and review lexical friction.

Do not count new words. Count repaired routes.

这一周不是扩词汇量,而是校准词汇系统。

54. A 30-day natural-English challenge | 30 天自然英语挑战

  • Read 20 high-quality articles or chapters.
  • Listen to 10 long-form interviews or lectures.
  • Collect 120 natural phrases, collocations or frames.
  • Reject at least 30 low-value or overly formal phrases.
  • Build 20 three-register contrast sets.
  • Build 20 near-synonym decision sets.
  • Record 12 spoken responses.
  • Re-record 4 after lexical repair.

  • Build a personal corpus of 25 recurring “correct but unnatural” expressions.
  • Complete 4 no-notes phrase-retrieval tests.

55. A 12-week progression from correct to natural | 12 周从正确走向自然

WeeksFocusEvidence of progress
1–2diagnose translated collocationsfewer obvious lexical combinations
3–4high-frequency phrase networksfaster natural production
5–6register and connotationbetter audience calibration
7–8spoken chunks and listeningless word-by-word assembly
9–10academic/professional naturalnessclearer formal output
11–12transfer and independent editingself-correction across new topics

The end point is not “perfect English”. It is a learner who can increasingly diagnose and repair their own lexical choices.

56. Natural English for academic writing | 学术写作的自然词汇

Academic naturalness usually values accurate stance, conventional reporting verbs and controlled phraseology over decorative vocabulary.

  • the evidence suggests…
  • the findings are consistent with…
  • one possible explanation is…
  • this interpretation should be treated cautiously
  • a key limitation is…
  • the extent to which…
  • there is insufficient evidence to establish…

Oxford’s OPAL resources are useful because they focus on academic words and phrases used in writing and speaking.

自然学术英语不是把每个词都换成“学术大词”,而是把证据关系和论证关系写清楚。

57. Natural English for professional work | 职场英语的自然词汇

Professional English often needs clarity about action, responsibility, risk, time and decisions.

  • clarify requirements
  • define the scope
  • allocate resources
  • identify constraints
  • assess feasibility
  • mitigate risk
  • resolve an issue
  • revise the estimate
  • defer the decision
  • outline next steps
  • assign ownership
  • track progress

Natural professional vocabulary makes the work easier to coordinate.

职场英语最重要的“高级感”通常来自清楚、可靠、可执行。

58. Natural English for serious conversation | 严肃对话里的自然词汇

  • I see the distinction, but…
  • That depends on what we mean by…
  • I agree with the diagnosis, but not the solution.
  • There are two separate issues here.
  • The evidence supports a narrower claim.
  • That may be true in one context, but not another.
  • Let me put that differently.
  • More specifically…

Natural advanced conversation is not a performance of rare words. It is the ability to move through nuance without losing the listener.

59. How a strong tutor teaches natural vocabulary | 高水平导师怎样教“自然英语”?

A strong tutor does not merely say, “Native speakers do not say that.” That gives the learner a correction but not a system.

  • identify the exact source of friction
  • show the conventional alternative
  • explain collocation or register
  • compare near alternatives
  • show authentic examples
  • require retrieval
  • move the phrase into a new topic
  • check the same mechanism later
  • reduce support gradually
  • teach the learner to diagnose the next case independently

This connects to eduKateSG’s Tutor Classification Model: advanced instruction goes beyond explanation into diagnosis, modelling, route selection, feedback and independent transfer.

真正优秀的导师最终要让学生越来越少依赖“老师告诉我这句自然不自然”。

60. Canonical ownership and collision boundary | 本课与现有页面的所有权边界

This lesson owns the Chinese-supported advanced-vocabulary integration route from grammatical correctness to natural lexical performance. It does not replace the specialist mechanism owners already published across the eduKate ecosystem.

This page coordinates those mechanisms for one learner problem: “My English is correct, but it does not yet sound natural.”

61. The first four lessons as one system | 前四课合在一起,形成一个完整系统

LessonMain moveQuestion
001Build lexical depthHow much do I really know about familiar words?
002Build families and phrase networksHow do I connect words into usable systems?
003Break one-to-one translationHow do I choose English from context rather than Chinese labels?
004Build naturalnessWould English normally choose this expression here?

These four lessons form Batch 01. They move from knowledge → network → choice → performance.

知识 → 网络 → 选择 → 表现。

62. Recommended books and apex reference tools | 推荐书籍与优质工具

63. SEO language map | 本课关键词范围

This lesson naturally serves natural English vocabulary, how to sound natural in English, advanced English vocabulary for Chinese speakers, correct English vs natural English, English collocations, lexical chunks, English register, English connotation, C1 vocabulary, C2 vocabulary, advanced English speaking vocabulary, advanced English writing vocabulary, English phrase learning, Mandarin to English vocabulary, Chinese English mistakes, English collocation practice, English natural expressions, English Vocabulary in Use Advanced, English Collocations in Use Advanced, 高级英语词汇, 自然英语, 地道英语, 英语搭配, 英语词块, 英语语感, 英语语域, 英语近义词, 中文母语英语学习, 中式英语, C1 英语词汇 and C2 英语词汇.

Keywords are routes to genuine instruction, not text to repeat mechanically.

64. Final assignment | 最后一份作业

Take one paragraph you wrote recently. Do not correct grammar first. Run a naturalness audit.

  1. Circle five important nouns.
  2. Check their verb and adjective collocations.
  3. Underline broad verbs.
  4. Ask whether a more precise event verb is needed.
  5. Mark every phrase you translated directly from Chinese.
  6. Check register.
  7. Check connotation.
  8. Remove one unnecessary formal word.
  9. Replace one vague phrase with a more precise natural phrase.
  10. Read the paragraph aloud.
  11. Close the corrected version.
  12. Rewrite the paragraph tomorrow from memory.

The final step matters. If the repair exists only on the edited page, you have corrected a text. If you can recreate it later, you have changed your language system.

改好一句话,不等于学会。下次还能自然说出来,才叫真正升级。

65. The final rule | 最后一条规则

Do not try to sound advanced. Build enough control that natural English becomes the easier choice.

不要努力“听起来高级”。把控制练到足够强,让自然英语慢慢变成更容易出现的选择。

At first, naturalness requires checking. Then comparison. Then repeated retrieval. Then transfer. Eventually, many decisions become fast enough that you no longer feel yourself making them.

一开始你要查词典、对比搭配、检查语域。后来你会开始直接觉得某个组合更合适。那不是魔法。那是大量正确连接留下来的结果。

That is the movement from correct English to natural English.

从“没有错”,走向“就是这样说”。
