One paper can flatter a learner because the question mix fits well. Another can depress performance because several weak areas happen to cluster together. One week can contain unusual fatigue, unusual confidence, recent revision or a particularly supportive classroom sequence.
The Sampling Window asks whether we have observed enough of the capability, across enough relevant conditions, to make the size of claim we are making.
The One-Sentence Answer
A broad learning claim needs evidence sampled across the conditions that matter to that claim, not merely several observations drawn from the same narrow moment.
Where the Sampling Window Sits in Curie
Evidence Convergence asks whether different signals tell the same story. The Sampling Window asks whether those signals come from a sufficiently representative slice of the learner’s actual operating conditions.
Agreement can still mislead if everything was observed in one narrow environment.
More Observations Are Not Automatically a Wider Sample
Ten questions completed immediately after one worked example may produce ten data points, but they still belong to one narrow learning condition.
A wider sampling window may instead include fewer observations across deliberately different conditions.

Diagnosis: Match the Window to the Claim
If the claim is narrow—“the learner can execute this method immediately after teaching”—a narrow window may be perfectly sufficient.
If the claim is broad—“the learner now owns this capability independently”—the sampling window must be broader. It should normally include time, changed task form and reduced support.
The larger the claim, the wider the evidence window needs to be.
English
A learner who writes one excellent essay has produced valuable evidence. But a broad claim about independent writing becomes stronger when planning, language control, editing and judgement reappear across different prompts and after the exact teacher model is no longer fresh.

Mathematics
A learner may look secure in a chapter exercise because the chapter name supplies the route. A broader sample includes mixed questions, delayed return, altered numbers and at least one independent start.

A correct explanation under one familiar diagram is useful. A broader sample asks whether mechanism, prediction and evidence reasoning survive when the diagram, context or variable presentation changes.

A-Math often makes narrow sampling especially risky because procedural fluency can look impressive inside one familiar exercise family. A wider window checks whether the learner can identify the structure, select the route and verify the result in mixed conditions.
Sampling Should Include Ordinary Variation
Learners are human. Sleep, stress, unfamiliar wording, recent revision and confidence can shift performance.
The goal is not to eliminate this variation. It is to avoid mistaking one unusually high or low moment for the entire stable state.
Repair: Widen Only the Dimension That Matters
- State the claim.
- Ask which conditions the claim is supposed to survive.
- Check which of those conditions are already represented in the evidence.
- Identify the narrowest missing dimension.
- Add one observation there.
- Use Evidence Convergence to see whether the wider sample supports the same interpretation.
- Stop widening when the next decision is already justified.
Tutorial and Tutor
A Tutorial supplies high-resolution observations. But a sequence of Tutorials, homework returns and delayed checks creates the wider sampling window.
The Tutor dashboard should therefore distinguish “observed strongly today” from “observed repeatedly across time and conditions.”

- Is this conclusion based on one paper or a pattern?
- Has the capability appeared after time has passed?
- Has it appeared without the original support?
- Has the question form changed?
- Are we making a bigger claim than the sampling window justifies?
Voyage and Darwin
Across the Voyage, the environments learners must survive become broader. A capability that appears only in one narrow school condition is less useful than one that travels. The Darwin Series asks whether the learning configuration continues to fit those expanding environments.
Boundaries
- Do not demand a huge sample for a small, low-risk educational decision.
- Do not confuse many repeated versions of one task with representative evidence.
- Do not use “representative” to justify endless testing.
- Do not average away meaningful differences between conditions.
- Keep the claim no larger than the sample supports.
The Core Rule of the Sampling Window
Match the breadth of the evidence window to the breadth of the learning claim, sampling across only the time, support, task and context conditions that genuinely matter to the next decision.

There is no fixed number. Representation depends on whether the important conditions for the claim have actually been sampled.
Can one test ever be enough?
